Nevaah neither of which is natural. Straight hair is natural if that’s how it grows from your scalp. However if the hair is naturally curly/super curly, but blown dry using heat to deform the curl, then straightened further using silk press technique; the curl pattern is altered. Unfortunately many black women having their done by people who are even aware of accurate terminology. At this point I am unwilling to watch black hair tutorials because I am only interested in maintaining healthy natural hair and using styles that are take advantages of its characteristics. I love myself and my hair. I for millennia before getting displaced to the Americas, African people wear caring for their natural hair.

My hair has been completely natural for 50 years, I would never let someone touch my hair that regularly straightens hair. Natural hair care is a curated art form, with thousands of years of historical perfection in it's purse.
And little do those women know that having the distinction will help those of us who do want true natural hair stylists. We can avoid booking with stylists who have no interest in dealing with natural hair in its natural state. Let those that want the straight hair or blown out styles stick with the stylists that suit them. I support there being a distinction made.
Exactly. My take on it (and I did say "my" so don't come for me straight naturals 😄) is that they are still burning their scalps from the heat of a flatiron VS. a chemical. It's still damaging and painful. I went the silk press route when I first went natural until I realized the heat hitting my scalp from the flatiron and that extremely hot blowdryer was very uncomfortable and unhealthy for my hair and follicles. I haven't used heat besides the Revair (twice) in about 3 yrs. I haven't set foot in a salon in 4 yrs due to the trauma caused by so-called "natural hairstylists" who had no skill in detangling type 4 hair, tore through my coils with combs and could only press natural hair. There is a difference. Narada is absolutely correct.

I can’t tell you how many salons say cater to natural hair or call themselves naturalistas. My daughter who had tailbone length 4C hair and she did this all on her own wanted to get trim of her ends. These ppl put relaxer in her hair conditioner because they said her hair was too dense and charged her more money for the length of time it took. I was so upset. Her hair fell out. Another time. She made sure she washed her hair and conditioned and did her own blow out and all they had to do was give her a trim. They messed her hair up. She went into a depression. It took years of my support and help to get her back after 7 years. She is now starting her own haircare line that she developed to help get herself and hair back to healthy. ❤❤
I know of a stylist who specializes in straightening and coloring hair, and she once stated she did not do natural hair. She was referring to styling Afro textured hair in its natural state. Several natural women went to her to get a silk press.
Wow, this is the first time I’ve heard this type of terminology something new. I have been a hair stylist for 25 years. And I see this all the time . They come in wanting you to achieve something that is impossible because of the condition of their hair. Have had many clients come in the hair salon and want to achieve a hairstyle that requires only natural hair. I never hold back my knowledge from them, and explain that your hair will not look this way, because their hair is either heat damage or chemically relaxed. But I try my best to achieve the look by doing rods or some different type of technique. And because of my honesty, they totally respect my opinion, and choose something else.

Thank you!!! You are saying that same thing I have been telling people for years. A fellow stylist told me she does natural hair the same way I do. I was like, no. Because she could only cut, braid, and style hair after using tons of heat. It doesn't work that way.
I totally get what this gentleman is saying. I have not relaxed my hair in 16 years and I have never colored my hair. I am chemical free however I wear my hair both silk press AND I do wash and go’s. For those that wear their hair mostly In a silk press I encourage you to please try to not be triggered by what he is differentiating here. How YOU choose to wear your hair is personal and I personally don’t take it as an attack or one is better than the other. Just know the difference so you know what you are getting when you chose a stylist.
Natural hair will always have its own category. Period. Those who are in tune with there hair dynamics. The health of the hair is all that matter and sadly stylist of the black community DO NOT PRIORITIZE HAIR HEALTH CARE. Nor do they know how to restore damage hair or prevent it.
As someone who at best had wavey hair, learning about hair from you has helped the health of my hair and some lose curls have been forming. You definitely give good advice on not just hair care for natural hair types, but for all hair types since you do encourage for everyone to do a bit of their own research to find out what works for your hair. I wore my hair straight most of the time or twisted up into Twista or braids which require my hair to be blown out. 🤔 I never considered myself a Natural Natural for that reason. People often thought I had a relaxer because of how straight the hair is. So... I started saying "Oh no, I am a Straight Natural. No chemicals."
Natural means chemical free…if that’s the case braid outs and twist outs aren’t natural styles either because you’re manipulating your nausea curl pattern. Straighten natural hair is also temporarily manipulating your natural curl pattern
I’m so glad you made this clear. I noticed this a few years ago. The regular salon was just concerned about the style coming out right. Not a lot of care for the health of my hair vs. going to a natural salon who treated and mostly did protective styles. There is a huge difference

I don’t mind straightening my hair sometimes, but now that it’s reached a certain length it tangles a lot and everyone’s solution is keep it straightened. Bro I would miss my hair too much, I only straighten once or twice a yr I’m not used to that. I do stretch it more often to avoid tangles, but why are “natural” girlies so obsessed with straightening it? I’ve been natural for over 20 years…is this the new thing? Straight naturals?
I like your style! You are so funny and so right about alot of things you say. I was a stylist, too. Retired... There are many kinds of stylists. If you call yourself a "Natural" stylist, then you should be able to deliver acceptable results without heat or chemicals! I wear my hair natural as in my hair grows from my scalp without extention. However, full of relaxer and bleach. I have never called myself a natural hair stylist because my styles be full of heat chemicals and color. 😂❤ He's right ✅️ let your title dictate your ability. He is right. I'm natural and blow dry sometimes...not often. However, not every stylist who says they know how to deal with natural hair CAN. As soon as I see that bristle brush come out or you immediately start to rake your fingers through my hair, I know you think you know. I will only go to a regular stylist for a trim AFTER I have washed and dried my own hair.

X again, I agree with you sir... I get into arguments with other stylists and clients about what NATURAL hairstyles... Anything with heat, chemicals, etc is NOT A NATURAL HAIRSTYLE... give me a comb, some water, and maybe some conditioner and/or oil; I do ALL HAIR TYPES... For a natural hairstyle though, you will be air drying!!!
Natural hair is textured hair. When it becomes straight it is no long natural. It’s straight hair, or pressed or silk pressed hair or whatever the heck u wanna call it. What it is not is natural hair.

That's why my first attempt at going natural was a fail. My stylist has no clue how to detangle, or do anything else except flat iron lol she fried my ends so bad I had to big chop a second time
I was always under the impression that a good hair stylist works with all hair types and textures, in all their states. Jerri curls, straightening combs, Marells(sp?), afros, twist outs, braids...etc., etc.. My hairstylist transitioned me, successfully, from relaxed hair to natural. If your stylist can't work with all hair textures, then she needs a sideeye.
I don’t see the problem with him distinguishing the difference between the two. If I wanted someone to handle my natural hair, I would feel a lot more comfortable with and confident in the capabilities of someone who actually works with natural hair (in it’s natural state). That’s said I understand there are different kinds of naturals and there’s no wrong way to do it (it’s whatever works for you). Personally, I’m natural in that my hair isn’t permed and I rarely put heat on it… but I also have it in protective styles most of the year because it’s thick and time consuming to do. In other words, my hair is natural under the protective styles but I don’t deal with it daily so I could definitely see the benefit of having someone who does handle natural hair regularly doing my hair.
I’m so glad I found your channel and other ppl that just get it. I’ve been natural since 2010/2011 and I have yet to find a real natural hairstylist that can create beautiful natural hairstyles or a stylist that hasn’t burned my hair using excessive heat. Being natural and constantly straightening your hair is so pointless to me-this was the case when I first went natural. My hair looked great straight but my curl pattern looked horrible. Wash and gos, slick back or up ponytail, and twist outs are literally my go-to styles.
I had locs for 10 years cut them after the 10th year and nobody can do my kinky texture hair..my hair is shirt and with shrinkage, it is very short. Nobody wants to touch my hair in its natural state

And I hate when people tell me yes I do natural hair and then they want to jail my hair down but weaving it hot Combs flat iron it do silk press and they don't really do a good job on the silk press. They always want to cut your hair always when the last time you had to trim when the last time you did this when you clip your in always that's all they want to do they don't know anything about the proper chemicals or what you should do to keep your hair moisturize they don't really sit down and talk to you about your hair .
I once argued with a white woman on social media when she called herself a black hairstylist because she only did relaxers and sew-ins. No braids, twists or natural. She was focused on assimilating black women into whiteness and hated natural hair.

There is a BIG difference between a regular hairstylist and a natural hair stylist. As a natural hair person who where's their natural hair with as minimal heat as possible, it is hard to find a natural hair stylist.
I think they are very different and I used to go to a natural hair salon call kinks international in Sacramento when I started Locking my hair it was a completely different atmosphere it was a completely different experience and I felt like for me it was more of a holistic experience it was beautiful

It is really difference.. There is license for natural hairstylist for ppl that only work with natural hair actually there's a lot licensee's out there if you only want to deal with a specific thing
No there's isn't in some states. It's also important to make the distinction not for professionals but for the clients and consumers. Many of them feel deceived when they go to someone claiming to be a natural hair stylist but only offering blowouts and silk presses. Read the comments and you will see for yourself
Great point, there is no stylist where I live that can do a great natural style, your hair have to be permed or silk press for them to your hair., unless you getting locs
Imma take it even further and say, if your hair is straightend or silk pressed, you are NOT natural until your curls revert back to normal. If your hair is heat damaged then it's not natural either.

I remember when a portion of my hair was straightened so much it took months for it to become curly again. I was very much heartbroken.

Thank you!!! You are saying that same thing I have been telling people for years. A fellow stylist told me she does natural hair the same way I do. I was like, no. Because she could only cut, braid, and style hair after using tons of heat. It doesn't work that way.
I totally get what this gentleman is saying. I have not relaxed my hair in 16 years and I have never colored my hair. I am chemical free however I wear my hair both silk press AND I do wash and go’s. For those that wear their hair mostly In a silk press I encourage you to please try to not be triggered by what he is differentiating here. How YOU choose to wear your hair is personal and I personally don’t take it as an attack or one is better than the other. Just know the difference so you know what you are getting when you chose a stylist.

Natural hair will always have its own category. Period. Those who are in tune with there hair dynamics. The health of the hair is all that matter and sadly stylist of the black community DO NOT PRIORITIZE HAIR HEALTH CARE. Nor do they know how to restore damage hair or prevent it.
As someone who at best had wavey hair, learning about hair from you has helped the health of my hair and some lose curls have been forming. You definitely give good advice on not just hair care for natural hair types, but for all hair types since you do encourage for everyone to do a bit of their own research to find out what works for your hair. Rather refreshing to see people out there not trying to promote one type of hair care or a product that will fix all your hair problems. Everyone needs to be more like you

I wore my hair straight most of the time or twisted up into Twista or braids which require my hair to be blown out. 🤔 I never considered myself a Natural Natural for that reason. People often thought I had a relaxer because of how straight the hair is. So... I started saying "Oh no, I am a Straight Natural. No chemicals."
Natural means chemical free…if that’s the case braid outs and twist outs aren’t natural styles either because you’re manipulating your nausea curl pattern. Straighten natural hair is also temporarily manipulating your natural curl pattern
I’m so glad you made this clear. I noticed this a few years ago. The regular salon was just concerned about the style coming out right. Not a lot of care for the health of my hair vs. going to a natural salon who treated and mostly did protective styles. There is a huge difference

I don’t mind straightening my hair sometimes, but now that it’s reached a certain length it tangles a lot and everyone’s solution is keep it straightened. Bro I would miss my hair too much, I only straighten once or twice a yr I’m not used to that. I do stretch it more often to avoid tangles, but why are “natural” girlies so obsessed with straightening it? I’ve been natural for over 20 years…is this the new thing? Straight naturals?

If you call yourself a "Natural" stylist, then you should be able to deliver acceptable results without heat or chemicals! I wear my hair natural as in my hair grows from my scalp without extention. However, full of relaxer and bleach. I have never called myself a natural hair stylist because my styles be full of heat chemicals and color. 😂❤ He's right ✅️ let your title dictate your ability. I hear you. I like to wear my hair both ways. I adore my curls and it’s hard to find someone who wants to cater to my curls. I like to consider my self natural still though. My curls can still convert back❤ to
He is right. I'm natural and blow dry sometimes...not often. However, not every stylist who says they know how to deal with natural hair CAN. As soon as I see that bristle brush come out or you immediately start to rake your fingers through my hair, I know you think you know. I will only go to a regular stylist for a trim AFTER I have washed and dried my own hair.

Anything with heat, chemicals, etc is NOT A NATURAL HAIRSTYLE... give me a comb, some water, and maybe some conditioner and/or oil; I do ALL HAIR TYPES... For a natural hairstyle though, you will be air drying!!!

Natural hair is textured hair. When it becomes straight it is no long natural. It’s straight hair, or pressed or silk pressed hair or whatever the heck u wanna call it. What it is not is natural hair.
I'm so glad someone finally said it it seems that these so called natural hairstylist all they claim they know how to do are silk presses or anything that involves altering natural hair and you even have stylist who say they don't like doing 4c hair like wow times have changed that's why I do my own hair because these stylist do what they wanna do and how they wanna do it it's sad to be honest 🤷🏾♀️

You are Absolutely correct about what you said about heat , that they use heat to style, which I am naturally curly and don’t use any type of heat in my hair at all. I let my hair dry naturally.

That's why my first attempt at going natural was a fail. My stylist has no clue how to detangle, or do anything else except flat iron lol she fried my ends so bad I had to big chop a second time
I was always under the impression that a good hair stylist works with all hair types and textures, in all their states. Jerri curls, straightening combs, Marells(sp?), afros, twist outs, braids...etc., etc.. My hairstylist transitioned me, successfully, from relaxed hair to natural. If your stylist can't work with all hair textures, then she needs a sideeye.

I don’t see the problem with him distinguishing the difference between the two. If I wanted someone to handle my natural hair, I would feel a lot more comfortable with and confident in the capabilities of someone who actually works with natural hair (in it’s natural state). That’s said I understand there are different kinds of naturals and there’s no wrong way to do it (it’s whatever works for you). Personally, I’m natural in that my hair isn’t permed and I rarely put heat on it… but I also have it in protective styles most of the year because it’s thick and time consuming to do. In other words, my hair is natural under the protective styles but I don’t deal with it daily so I could definitely see the benefit of having someone who does handle natural hair regularly doing my hair.

I’m so glad I found your channel and other ppl that just get it. I’ve been natural since 2010/2011 and I have yet to find a real natural hairstylist that can create beautiful natural hairstyles or a stylist that hasn’t burned my hair using excessive heat. Being natural and constantly straightening your hair is so pointless to me-this was the case when I first went natural. My hair looked great straight but my curl pattern looked horrible. Wash and gos, slick back or up ponytail, and twist outs are literally my go-to styles.

I had locs for 10 years cut them after the 10th year and nobody can do my kinky texture hair..my hair is shirt and with shrinkage, it is very short. Nobody wants to touch my hair in its natural state
You are absolutely correct. And I hate when people tell me yes I do natural hair and then they want to jail my hair down but weaving it hot Combs flat iron it do silk press and they don't really do a good job on the silk press. They always want to cut your hair always when the last time you had to trim when the last time you did this when you clip your in always that's all they want to do they don't know anything about the proper chemicals or what you should do to keep your hair moisturize they don't really sit down and talk to you about your hair .

I once argued with a white woman on social media when she called herself a black hairstylist because she only did relaxers and sew-ins. No braids, twists or natural. She was focused on assimilating black women into whiteness and hated natural hair.

There is a BIG difference between a regular hairstylist and a natural hair stylist. As a natural hair person who where's their natural hair with as minimal heat as possible, it is hard to find a natural hair stylist.

I think they are very different and I used to go to a natural hair salon call kinks international in Sacramento when I started Locking my hair it was a completely different atmosphere it was a completely different experience and I felt like for me it was more of a holistic experience it was beautiful

No there's isn't in some states. It's also important to make the distinction not for professionals but for the clients and consumers. Many of them feel deceived when they go to someone claiming to be a natural hair stylist but only offering blowouts and silk presses. Read the comments and you will see for yourself

Imma take it even further and say, if your hair is straightend or silk pressed, you are NOT natural until your curls revert back to normal. If your hair is heat damaged then it's not natural either.
