I'm just a Polish guy that's never visited the US. I love learning about the US though, especially about its cities and towns. I randomly dropped into New Bedford in Google Maps Street View today and really loved how the town looked. Decided to look up some videos about it and found this amazing tour. Very engaging and interesting. I'm gonna watch more tours and learn about New Bedford as much as I can, and maybe one day I'll be able to visit. Also I think I'll need to tackle Moby Dick this year. I've been wanting to read it for a long time and the fact that some of it happens in New Bedford totally escaped me.

I'm not a native, but ended up moving here for good several years ago. It is a fascinating place - check out some of the other tours I did with Bruce, he really brings the place to life. Hope you eventually make it!

I grew up in the area but left several years ago. You would probably be surprised at the amount of Polish immigration in that area. In your research include Fall River, MA (12 miles away), Newport, RI (30 min). Dartmouth, MA. Lizzie Borden, Hetty Green. The role the area played in the underground railroad, etc etc. Great history. Growing up there was a Ukrainian Club (Polish? IDK much about Poland or its history). There's even a restaurant in Fall River called Patty's Pierogis. If ever you plan a trip make some local contacts.

New Bedford was the Silicon Valley of the 1820s. Richest city in the US. When oil ruined the whaling industry, the Quakers never skipped a beat and started the textile industry. Urban renewal in the 60s tried to destroy all this. I think the Preservatoin Society is responsible for saving much of it. The geniuses running the city then gave away the whaling ship Charles W Morgan.

The Rural Cemetery in New Bedford is very interesting. The founding citizens rest there . New Bedford has so many beautiful buildings and sights to visit. Our Whaling Museum is wonderful and Moby Dick is read each year, people take turns reading it out loud . Come visit us, and be charmed by New Bedford.
