@@JSAbbott Sorry, i wasn't very clear. when I split the views, everything was fine and I was doing exactly what you were, but when I applied the colour the hat didn't change, i do appreciate that I am on a completely different version from what you were using though
@@macariorichfranssen So you just aren't seeing the colors in the viewport? Make sure you are in Material Preview (you can get to it using the Z-key or using the icons in the upper-right of the viewport [3rd one, marked viewport shading].

is there a way to make the hat more thicc because I feel like its too thin
You can either apply a solidify modifier or just extrude the geometry.

pretty cool but its not allowing me to extrude the edges in their normals
You can change the transformation orientation from global to normal and extrude along one of the Axis.
Use the comma key to show the Orientation menu, then select Normals.
