- It's the end of another year. Another year, another Replay. The 7-year-long tradition continues.
Isn't it weird that a year seemed to have passed so quickly and slowly at the same time? For instance, 2022 seemed to have gone by super quickly, but once you start thinking about things that happened back in January or February, you really start to realize how long ago it's been. That's how I feel about every year, really.
This year was the best year in the channel's history in terms of growth. OllehRebelz went from 6,800 subscribers to 57,000, a growth rate I never would've imagined. Views went from less than 900k to 5.7M. Other metrics did similarly well. The month of April-and the day of April 19-single-handedly broke all previous records of this channel and will probably remain that way for a long time.
2022 is the 2nd time I've had five videos uploaded this year with over 10k views (after 2020). However, it is definitely the first time that I've had two videos uploaded this year with over 100k views. Also the first time I've had a video with over a record-breaking million views. 2020 didn't even come close.
This Replay was one of the riskiest projects ever (probably in the history of the channel). It almost didn't happen. That's because this school semester was unusually busy compared to previous semesters, and I was juggling two huge projects: Weekly Life 4 and Olleh Replay 2022. Weekly Life 4 almost didn't happen as well, but once that was completed, I diverted all attention to creating this video. As it was during finals week, it wasn't really successful. I created the script while studying for my exams, recorded an entire scene in a single morning, etc. In short, it was a rough schedule and workload to balance.
Even though I wrote the script and got started on recording the video extremely late (probably mid-December), this was probably one of the faster Replays to be completed. The work process was super efficient, and even with a five-day trip to Hawaii just days before New Year's Eve, it didn't affect progress on Replay. If it had been slightly less efficient, I wouldn't have been able to meet the New Year's Eve deadline.
This year's Replay included a lot of references, including Duolingo, the channel boost, and NYU vlogs. Duolingo was huge, obviously, and therefore, the channel boost comprised a majority of the video.
For this Replay, I focused on settings/locations and storylines. For settings, there was a lot more outdoor filming compared to 2020 and 2021, as I wanted to create an outdoor atmosphere like in Replays 2018 and 2019. For the script, I wanted to include a portion where I acknowledged the "How to Read Korean" video from 2019. That video is currently the second most viewed video on my channel with over a million views. Since its impact was so huge, I initially wanted to include the character from that video in the thumbnail, but I later changed my mind. It would've been weird because I had never shown a character from previous years. Instead, I wanted to make a "cameo," and so the resulting product was Scene 3. It involves a bit of travelling back into time and intentionally recording the video with a roughly-15-year-old Canon camera. I wanted a retro feeling to it, so I didn't affect the footage in any way (like color-editing).
Additional notes: A scene was removed from Replay. It would've originally played "Still Life" by BIGBANG, as it was one of the most listened songs of this year for me. However, I had trouble allocating ideas to that scene, as all of them had been done in other scenes. Plus, the fact that the song's structure is unusual (with no clear pattern of choruses and verses) didn't help at all. In the end, I decided not to include that "fourth scene" in the video. It'll only remain as a brief note here in the description.
Also, it's the 2nd time I've made the thumbnail from scratch. Thumbnails from 2020 and before had backgrounds that I got from Google, but in 2021, I made my own for the first time. This year, I wanted to repeat that. The sunset, the ocean, and the mountain scenery was heavily influenced by the Hawaii trip.
