    Pintados - "The painted ones." was how the early Spanish explorers in the 1600's described the Visayan warrior class since they were tattooed from head to toe. As depicted in the "Boxer Codex".
    The tattoos were like a badge or patch of the warriors achievements and were acquired usually involving bloodshed or decapitation. Wielding double swords was how martial art of Arnis/Eskrima/Kali was originally meant to be used in tribal warfare. The one of earliest record of these warriors was documented in the early 12th century by a Chinese navy official. With their ocean faring warships named "Balanghai", they raided the southern parts of China mostly for iron and steel which they used to forge their weapons. They were akin to the Vikings but of South East Asia.

      That's how fearsome our ancestors back then way back when firearms was still not introduced no one can conquer Philippines even china was afraid to step foot in our land. The sulu tribes said to be raided china and they can't even lay a hand on them even with those kung fu that they were proud off can beat the filipino advanced martial arts.

    Long time ago on a visit to the Islands, I fought a local guy in a cage over 3 rounds (stick, knife, empty hand) no protective gear and shots to the head were NOT allowed, a very sobering experience, I would definitely recommend this type of training for everyone in FMA, beware though the hands get hurt very quickly. Just for the record I lost but learned a great deal.

      Rattan wood Kali or Escrima sticks are what I use. You can get them with and without bark. Very tough. With the bark tends to be heavier. Either can be used from a long time. Use electrical tape to help them last longer.

    This video is a little bit confusing, because first he is teaching the drill: don't break off. Chinese kungfu has drills that teach this also; push hands and sticky hands. To do them correctly you have to stay connected to your partner.
    But then he breaks off on to his other teaching points: "know you weapon" and "nobody can stop you." What I think he means by "nobody can stop you" is that parrying is not really a thing. We do it in drills to develop speed and sensitivity, but on the street, if someone tried to parry you would "defang the snake"--cut your opponent's parry hand. There are other videos where he explains this also.

    Nobody can stop you if you learn the Pintado system? I critique your techniques and what you say but not you as a person.The other guy has a blade, too, and he can thrust you (quicker and direct) while you are doing the huen sao (circling hand with more travel time) with your blade (slower and he can also grab your hand or redirect it). That technique is only good if the other guy has no weapon and no martial arts experience. Not that easy to pull off in a real fight with someone with equal skill. If the other guy is unarmed, his priority is to control your weapon hand at all costs so that he will not get cut (using both arms to control your weapon hand). All the techniques you showed were already present and practiced in most FMA systems like in the days of Dan Inosanto and other escrimadors in Cebu and elsewhere (tapi-tapi, hubad lubad, cadena de mano, Wing Chun chisao, Pelampas (Silat), etc). Who copied who?

    • @yipyomorgan4380
      @yipyomorgan4380 Год назад +10

      If you only learn "what works" then you never fully grasp how your body mechanics work. If I'm fighting someone of equal skill, I won't give him a shot I know he can parry and counter. He's just answering the question of "where is the strike after you counter the parry?"
      Also, the next part of what he said was important to what he meant. "Because the Pintados system is designed to be who you are." It's recognizing that Kali/Escrima is at its peak when you blend the systems and learn how you, the fighter, apply the techniques. It's about learning what your instincts are and making them better. If you, the fighter, would answer that parry in a different way, that's fine. That's the philosophy of pintados as I understand it.

    • @neomagnon
      @neomagnon Год назад +2

      @@yipyomorgan4380 He is showing a blade fight scenario. Yes, he perfectly countered the parry with a huen sao (circling hand) and neck slash/thrust. Perfect, right? But what about the other guy with a blade? He will not just stand there and wait to be "killed"?

    • @yipyomorgan4380
      @yipyomorgan4380 Год назад +5

      @@neomagnon From that position, absolutely. What I would interpret this as is cranking the arm you've trapped until they need to use their other hand to support and then striking. Otherwise I'd only use this as-is if they don't have a weapon in their other hand. Most drills, as I'm sure you're aware, are far from practical but they help you learn or improve your speed, coordination, or conditioning. If you think about it, you're never really practicing for a life/death situation until you are in a life/death situation.

    • @neomagnon
      @neomagnon Год назад +3

      @@yipyomorgan4380 The thing is, they are practicing blade fights. If he is just showing a counter to one technique, then well and good. That's how I teach. But with a two-man drill, I make sure my counter is safe and even if my counter is countered, I make sure I respond to that, too. I don't just let the other guy freeze while I do my thing. And explain things as we go along.
      Yes, most drill are not practical but helps in things you said or for art's sake. You seldom see them in sparring, competition or real fight, or not at all. In a blade fight, one or two well placed strike, the fight is over.
