3 Cups, 2 as a starter, 4 Finals appearances, 400 wins, scored a goal... but let in a couple redliners (on the way to a Cup- remember just ONE of those shots ended Vancouver in 02) and all of a sudden Osgood's not hall worthy? I call BS.
@@MikeG82 Idk about that considering two of his three shutouts that postseason came in the first two games against the pens. On top of that, he finished the playoffs with a gaa below 2 and only 4 total losses. Even if you ignore the fact he saved the team in the first round by replacing Hasek, it's hard to deny those numbers.
@@justinbora2591 they shut out the pens because the pens couldn't penetrate their defense, it was like the wings were toying with them it was a miracle for the pens to win 2 games and they won because osgood let in softies, zetterberg should get into the hall just based on his performance against crosby that wings team should be remembered as one of the best teams ever, and yes osgood was the weak link, sometimes the goalie has good numbers because he hardly faces good shots on net
I legitimately believe Pavel Datsyuk is one of the greatest all-around skilled players of all time. And I'm not saying that as a homer. The way he controlled games, how his defense and backchecking was just as elite as his offense, his puck handing, vision, hockey IQ, all elite.
My Top 15 Red Wings (during my lifetime and viewing years) in reverse order: 15 Darren McCarty 14 Dino Ciccarelli 13 Vladimir Konstantinov 12 Adam Oates 11 Slava Kozlov 10 Brett Hull 9 Dominik Hasek 8 Chris Osgood 7 Bob Probert 6 Ray Sheppard 5 Pavel Datsyuk 4 Nicklas Lidstrom 3 Brendan Shanahan 2 Sergei Fedorov 1 Steve Yzerman
I think most Wings fans who watched Datsyuk and Zetterberg's careers love them equally, but for the sake of discussion, I consider Zetterberg my favorite player. He was obviously skilled, but where Datsyuk made his impact through creativity and talent, Zetterberg was sheer willpower. His best goals and plays were a result of effort more than dekes, speed, or having a great shot.
Thats a good list. My top 5 not best but fav players is Yzerman, Helm, Datsyuk, Lidström, Fedorov . Feels a bit sad because i truly love Osgood and Shanny aswell.
Thanks Shannon for the wonderful videos. I have been “sidelined” by a horrible vertigo attack and have been in bed for days. I am lucky enough to not succumb to the worldwide pandemic and try and take it a day at a time. This video has been the first I can manage to watch. Love my Red Wings and love your content. Much love 👏
Very awesome list Shannon! Lidstrom was my favorite Red Wing and I loved everyone else you picked too. I honestly think Lidstrom and Holmstrom played pinball out there everytime we got a powerplay and with Z and Pav out there at the same time it was just funny they way the made the other team look haha. But Lidstrom just knew where to be always at the right spot and the right time. Thanks for this video Shannon!
I don't know how anyone who loves Cam Neely not like Brendan Shanahan as they are very similar players. As a fan of both Wings and Bruins I really liked both players and for the Wings Shanny WAS our Cam Neely.
Yzerman was a guy that he had that look in his eye's you could just see it he was a leader that drove the franchise to today let's hope he is able to lead them to success.
Love the list.. as a life long Wings fan I can't argue with many of your points. Cheveldale and Gallant were before my time.. but Kozlov, Holmstrom were always underrated to me and I think it's because those teams were so stacked with all stars that they flew under the radar. Good stuff though, cheers!
As a Detroit fan I like your suggestions. Most Detroit fans will. We like our character players as much as the stars. I wouldn’t take any off the list, but I would include Konstantinov. The 1998 cup was in his honor. I also like Shanahan for the same reasons you would. I think it was 1998, maybe 2002, when he was not scoring as well and playing a mostly defensive game in the playoffs due to back pain and he told a reporter “I’m not playing for the Conn Smyth, I’m playing for the Stanley Cup”. I’m not sure those kind of moments are seen outside of the home crowd. Those were great teams top to bottom. Thank you for your videos.
Regarding the KLM line, I feel lucky to have watched these guys so many times as a kid. The stuff they could do was so fantastic it was beautiful to watch, even when they kicked our butts, which was most of the time.
I'm a Wings fan and I have no idea how I missed this video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my favourite team! Don't worry about it "not lining up with the opinions of Red Wings fans", that doesn't matter, we are here for your opinion.
Crazy that I’m only seeing this list now, but it really warms my heart to see you put Holmstrom at number 5. He was always the grit in front of the net the team needed and from what his teammates have said, the bright spot in the locker room.
Great list. Nice to have such a good list from a “non-Wings” fan. The Russian 5 was so much fun to watch. Holmstrom was a nice surprise to see you write. Surprised to not see McCarty, but obviously not surprised to see the best Captain ever as number 1.
Shannon, if you haven't, please check out the Russian 5 documentary. It's a fascinating watch to learn what the red wings had done to bring them all together through the years. Red wings fan or not, it's a very insightful watch.
I am a huge Detroit fan. Currently 37 years old and I was born and bread on the redwings. This list was fairly good 👍, We all have opinions about our favorites. But here is my question... I have never seen that hat and I wonder if you recall when where you got it. Sincerely #LGRW. Larkin for Captain! Also hope we can talk about that hat.
Kyle Quincy is my favorite. I remember when Scotty Bowman would have to bench Yzerman in the Pre-season games, because he was out there playing all-out and Scotty didn't want Stevie to get hurt before the season started.
1. Pavel Datsyuk 2. Darren McCarty 3. Sergei Fedorov 4. Steve Yzerman 5. Nick Lidstrom 6. Igor Larionov 7. Mike Vernon 8. Tomas Holmstrom 9. Henrik Zetterberg 10. Vladmir Konstantinov
Pittsburgh fans and NHL pundits would of course try to make it sound like Crosby was the greatest thing on earth the moment he hit the NHL. Meanwhile, the actual NHL players would vote Datsyuk as the toughest player to play against year after year. I'd say McCarty is on every fan's list; his journey was the ultimate redemption story of getting to the top of the mountain only to nearly lose everything to substance abuse and managed to put his life back together. And for being a grinder and a role player he had a knack for creating iconic moments; Bloody Wednesday which had to happen for the Wings to both mentally become a tougher team in order to win a cup and get past the Avalanche, he both dealt with Lemieux and scored the game winning goal in OT. Scored a game clinching goal against the Avs and one of the iconic goals of the 90s to clinch the first Cup in '97, in one of the all time playoff series against the Avs in '02 scored a natural hat trick in game 1 and the clinching goal in game 6 to get the series back to Detroit for game 7.
As a Brit I got into hockey though the NHL 98 demo. I played as the Wings. Then watched the real game. I no longer watch hockey but have a nostalgia for late 90s mid 00s hockey. My all time favs are Fedorov, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Draper and Yzerman.
Off the top of my head...Stevie Y (really wished those Yzerman to Montreal rumors had come to fruition back in the day), Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Osgood, Draper, Maltby...back to work I go...oh, Gallant. I met him in person as a kid back when he was an active player. He was friendly.
Yup speaking about players voting who the best is, During the mid 2000s up to like 2015. It was usually Datsyuk #1, Crosby #2. In 2012 alone Datsyuk was #1 in 6 different categories voted by NHL players, including smartest player, hardest to play against and hardest to take the puck from. It's not so far fetched to say he's a top 10 NHL player of all time imo. I fricken love Datsyuk lol "He is the sickest player I've ever seen in my life" - Brett Hull "He could do things nobody else could do and would try things we wouldn't even think of" - Steve Yzerman " He could've gotten an extra 50 points a year if he really wanted to, but he wanted to be the best player all around" - Luc Robitaille I mean, just name me one other NHL player who deliberately made 2 opponents crash into each other by dekeing both of them out. lol
Datsyuk is still able to play at a high level too. He just went to play in Russia. The magic man his puckhandling was too slick, his ability to steal the puck away from opponents swiftly he was levels above everybody else in the league imo he could go through an entire team and make it look easy
Speaking as a lifelong early-30s Red Wings fan: 1. Steve Yzerman 2. Nicklas Lidstrom 3. Tomas Holmstrom 4. Darren McCarty 5. Brendan Shanahan 6. Pavel Datsyuk 7. Henrik Zetterberg 8. Vladimir Konstantinov 9. Sergei Fedorov 10. Joe Kocur 11. Chris Chelios 12. Igor Larionov 13. Kris Draper 14. Chris Osgood 15. Brett Hull
PROBERT!!!! Is by far the best fighter ever in the nhl. Those that disagree, just jealous!!! He beat everyone at one point. Ask dave brown how that worked out for him.
One I think you would love but will never make this list: Joe Hicketts. Hard worker. Really small but plays a hard game (like 5'8" 174 but doesn't back down from a hit or clearing the crease). Seems like a really good guy on top of that. Big smile on the bench most of the time.
As a Red Wings fan since birth, this was really hard but I tried my hand at my own list. Also tried to exclude guys that were shorter term and only use guys I thought of as Red Wings first. (sorry Hasek and Chelios) 1.Steve Yzerman 2.Nicklas Lidstrom 3.Pavel Datsyuk 4.Chris Osgood 5.Sergei Fedorov 6.Tomas Homlstrom 7.Henrik Zetterberg 8.Igor Larionov 9.Brendan Shanahan 10.Jimmy Howard 11.Niklas Kronwall 12.Kris Draper 13.Darren McCarty 14.Tyler Bertuzzi 15.Kirk Maltby
Chris R I’m glad to see you have Howard in there. He gets a lot of undeserved criticism. He’s definitely lost a step now, but I think he’s been one of the best goalies at making the routine stops, at least up until his yearly injury, which he seems to be a different player when he returns. The red wings have been a much different team since he came around, had he been there during the cup years I think he’d have a better reputation.
Why is Fetisov not ranked? He is a HOF and IHOF member and one of the best defenders of all time. He was the leader of the Green Unit and won so many international titles... I would love to see a comparison between the KLM line and the Russian Five.
just for me....I became a fan after 1996 #1. Steve Yzerman #2. Henrik Zetterberg #3. Nicklas Lidstorm #4. Pavel Datsyuk #5.. Chris Chelios #6. Johan Franzen #7. Sergei Fedorov #8. Igor Larionov #9. Chris Osgood #10. Thomas Holmstrom #11. Brendan Shananhan #12. Dominik Hasek #13. Kris Draper #14. Darren McCarty #15. Kirk Maltby
My favorite wings I’ve watched (08-present) I tried to avoid players that only played one season in Detroit or rookies. Honorable mention: Tomas Holmstrom Brad Stuart Dan Cleary (would have been on the list but played three years too long and caused young players to be blocked) Filip Hronek: will be on the list next season. Darren Helm (08-11) injuries and contract have hurt his place Chris Osgood 1. Pavel Datsyuk 2. Nick Lidstrom 3. Henrik Zetterberg 4. Anthony Mantha 5. Dylan Larkin 6. Johan Franzen 7. Nick Kronwall 8. Todd Bertuzzi 9. Tyler Bertuzzi 10. Tomas Tatar 11. Gus Nyquist 12. Petr Mrazek 13. Brian Rafalski 14. Luke Glendening 15. Luke Witkowski
some i would have thrown on would be dino ciccarelli, paul coffey, darren mccarty, chelios (i wish we would have had him his whole career), larry murphy, and konstantinov.
Scarecrow7 yeah probably. Yzerman being the face of the franchise for over 2 decades is hard to go against as first. I just remember Shannon’s personal affinity for Larionov
I know that you never saw him play, but someday you should do a video about Gordie Howe. The man may have played in the paleolithic era, but much of what he accomplished is utterly insane. He finished top 10 in league scoring when he was over 40. I don't know if anyone else has ever done that, or will ever do that again. And in the 1953 scoring race he finished 24 points ahead of the nearest forward... who was his own linemate.
Yep and he could fight too. Anyone remember tough guy Lou Fontinato`s nose after Howe decked him. Lou said he was going to get Howe and he never bothered him after that ; read it in the Winnipeg Tribune back in the fifties no TV then but saw the picture of Lou`s nose in the paper. Ted Lindsey was a tough guy also ; him and Richard got at it one night and Ted decked him with one shot and Maurice was a few chicklets short.
Yzerman,Howe,Osgood, Draper, McCarty,Porbert,Homsltem,Zeterberg,Libstrom,Konstiov,Fedorov, Hesk,Gault,Lindsay, Sawchuck.Lapoint,Kocher,Chilleraly, Chelors and Bertuzzi in no particular order Matlbey,Laroniv,Dastk,Oates
Chevy was the start of Detroit's drive for the next greatest thing in net. Fans and media in the Big D have always been so harsh on our goalies. They "hated" Ozzie until he left and did well elsewhere. Johnny O was an awesome player. Got stuck in the Dead Wing era but always played hard. One of the best guys to wear #25. I miss Homer. He took so much punishment from goalies and d-men. Pavel was so fun to watch. So many great players for the Wings, the top 3 would be difficult. Shannon, what's your opinion of Darren Helm as an "honorable" mention?

Osgood for the HOF! I, too think he’s been overlooked among great goalies.
3 Cups, 2 as a starter, 4 Finals appearances, 400 wins, scored a goal... but let in a couple redliners (on the way to a Cup- remember just ONE of those shots ended Vancouver in 02) and all of a sudden Osgood's not hall worthy? I call BS.
and always remembered as the weak link of the team, never in vezina conversation
11 year old me is still pissed he didn't get the Smyth in 08
@@justinbora2591 11 year old you didn't understand the game, osgood is the only reason the pens had a chance that series
@@justinbora2591 they shut out the pens because the pens couldn't penetrate their defense, it was like the wings were toying with them it was a miracle for the pens to win 2 games and they won because osgood let in softies, zetterberg should get into the hall just based on his performance against crosby
that wings team should be remembered as one of the best teams ever, and yes osgood was the weak link, sometimes the goalie has good numbers because he hardly faces good shots on net
I legitimately believe Pavel Datsyuk is one of the greatest all-around skilled players of all time. And I'm not saying that as a homer. The way he controlled games, how his defense and backchecking was just as elite as his offense, his puck handing, vision, hockey IQ, all elite.
Here's how you know I'm not a biased Red Wings fan-
My favorite hockey player of all time is Peter Forsberg
So happy that Igor Larionov got the recognition of his Hockey IG, passing, and Leadership. Love that guy!!
My Top 15 Red Wings (during my lifetime and viewing years) in reverse order:
15 Darren McCarty
14 Dino Ciccarelli
13 Vladimir Konstantinov
12 Adam Oates
11 Slava Kozlov
10 Brett Hull
9 Dominik Hasek
8 Chris Osgood
7 Bob Probert
6 Ray Sheppard
5 Pavel Datsyuk
4 Nicklas Lidstrom
3 Brendan Shanahan
2 Sergei Fedorov
1 Steve Yzerman
I think most Wings fans who watched Datsyuk and Zetterberg's careers love them equally, but for the sake of discussion, I consider Zetterberg my favorite player. He was obviously skilled, but where Datsyuk made his impact through creativity and talent, Zetterberg was sheer willpower. His best goals and plays were a result of effort more than dekes, speed, or having a great shot.
My fav wings:
1. Lidström
2. Zetterberg
3. Kronwall
4. Franzén
5. Holmström
6. Datsyuk
Instämmer =)
McCarty
@Dixie Wrecked Yes. No, I like Yzerman but not really a favourite of mine. Not a wings fan either soo
Datsyuk #6 wtf lol
Kronwall 3 are you insane lol
Joey Kocur ❤️
Yup, almost as tough as Probert with none of the off ice problems. Also had some scoring ability. Plus he let me see one of his championship rings.
Bruise Brothers
psycosyin wow that’s pretty cool, joe seems like a nice guy. Very down to earth in interviews. Glad he got a ring with Detroit
The furniture he threw in that trash StL game....love the guy.
Love these lists your doing Shannon and the storytelling, you're such a treat to us fans.
Thank you.
My top 5 favorites are Yzerman, lidstrom, Fedorov, Datsyuk and Zetterberg.
Thats a good list. My top 5 not best but fav players is Yzerman, Helm, Datsyuk, Lidström, Fedorov . Feels a bit sad because i truly love Osgood and Shanny aswell.
Same
Howe, Yzerman, Lidstrom, Terrible Ted, Federov
Thanks for the hard work shannon.
Stevie Y was my favorite for the exact same reasons you gave for me.
I don't know how anyone who loves Cam Neely not like Brendan Shanahan as they are very similar players. As a fan of both Wings and Bruins I really liked both players and for the Wings Shanny WAS our Cam Neely.
Scarecrow7 love both of them ❤️
Love these favorites videos! Can’t wait for the blues!
Blues would be a good one to do. Cujo, Shanny, Hull...one of the what if cores in all of hockey
Thank you for your videos.
just my 2 cents;
Probie was absolutely the toughest player to ever play
Regarding the KLM line, I feel lucky to have watched these guys so many times as a kid. The stuff they could do was so fantastic it was beautiful to watch, even when they kicked our butts, which was most of the time.
I'm a Wings fan and I have no idea how I missed this video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my favourite team! Don't worry about it "not lining up with the opinions of Red Wings fans", that doesn't matter, we are here for your opinion.
love the video shannon hang in there buddy your doing a great job thanks for being apart of my life
Crazy that I’m only seeing this list now, but it really warms my heart to see you put Holmstrom at number 5.
Shanahan and Federov my all time favorite Wings and if add in Bure top three hockey idols. And wow if Bure had gone to Det.
Matt V What a teal
@@aaronstark1969 I can't help but make jokes at KH expense.
Drapers face-off percentage during those puck control and cup years was 👍
1. Pavel Datsyuk
2. Darren McCarty
3. Sergei Fedorov
4. Steve Yzerman
5. Nick Lidstrom
6. Igor Larionov
7. Mike Vernon
8. Tomas Holmstrom
9. Henrik Zetterberg
I wonder if Osgood would've had more consideration for the Hall if the Wings had repeated in 2009. He was fantastic that playoff run.
Great list! Here’s mine, go wings
1. Yzerman
2. Datsyuk
3. Lidstrom
4. Konstantinov
5. Zetterberg
6. Fedorov
7. Larionov
8. McCarty
9. Hasak
10. Osgood
11. Probert
12. Holmstrom
13. Koslov
14. Draper
15. Kronwall
I fricken love Datsyuk lol
"He is the sickest player I've ever seen in my life" - Brett Hull
"He could do things nobody else could do and would try things we wouldn't even think of" - Steve Yzerman
" He could've gotten an extra 50 points a year if he really wanted to, but he wanted to be the best player all around" - Luc Robitaille
I mean, just name me one other NHL player who deliberately made 2 opponents crash into each other by dekeing both of them out. lol
Datsyuk is still able to play at a high level too. He just went to play in Russia. The magic man his puckhandling was too slick, his ability to steal the puck away from opponents swiftly he was levels above everybody else in the league imo he could go through an entire team and make it look easy
Osgood is like 4th all time in win percentage, he retired top 10 in wins, 3 cups, scored a goal. He does actually have cream of the crop numbers
Move EVERY SINGLE NAME Down One spot... and Put Gordie Howe where he Belongs
im guessing you missed the part where he said players he actually watched....
talent wise and how he played the game, he is for sure #1. but having not seen him play, leaves him off the list.
@@joshmakeshift Some of us did. 😄
Back right corner of the room...Bruins and ‘67 Expansion heritage banners...Nice...I love those banners...they’re sweet
there should really be a Holmstrom-award!
I never would could have foreseen how good of a player that Bert has become. Great list.
Thanks for making me feel better about the video from earlier
Speaking as a lifelong early-30s Red Wings fan:
1. Steve Yzerman
2. Nicklas Lidstrom
3. Tomas Holmstrom
4. Darren McCarty
5. Brendan Shanahan
6. Pavel Datsyuk
7. Henrik Zetterberg
8. Vladimir Konstantinov
9. Sergei Fedorov
10. Joe Kocur
11. Chris Chelios
12. Igor Larionov
13. Kris Draper
14. Chris Osgood
15. Brett Hull
Really good list bro
my fav wings: Datsyuk, zettterberg, lidstrom, osgood, Yzerman
Federov was pretty damn good too.
@@sunileddu5847 the year he spent in Washington is the year Ovi really started to grow up and mature as a leader.
Yzerman played on one knee in 2002, yes. He also played 11 games in the 01 season/playoffs on a broken leg as well
PROBERT!!!! Is by far the best fighter ever in the nhl. Those that disagree, just jealous!!! He beat everyone at one point. Ask dave brown how that worked out for him.
Yzerman is Detroit, welcome home, time to own the league AGAIN
Don't look now, but Pixel is taking over the Cat Perch!
One I think you would love but will never make this list: Joe Hicketts. Hard worker. Really small but plays a hard game (like 5'8" 174 but doesn't back down from a hit or clearing the crease). Seems like a really good guy on top of that. Big smile on the bench most of the time.
Another great video Shannon.
My top 6 would be : Yzerman, Fedorov, Lindstrom, Datsyuk, Larionov, Fetisov,
Demolition man at no.5.. Hell yeah..only redwing I would compare with is Johan Franzen..too bad he stayed injured most of his career
As a Red Wings fan since birth, this was really hard but I tried my hand at my own list. Also tried to exclude guys that were shorter term and only use guys I thought of as Red Wings first. (sorry Hasek and Chelios)
1.Steve Yzerman
2.Nicklas Lidstrom
3.Pavel Datsyuk
4.Chris Osgood
5.Sergei Fedorov
6.Tomas Homlstrom
7.Henrik Zetterberg
8.Igor Larionov
9.Brendan Shanahan
10.Jimmy Howard
11.Niklas Kronwall
12.Kris Draper
13.Darren McCarty
14.Tyler Bertuzzi
15.Kirk Maltby
Wings fans have had it good for a long time, hard to offend us. And now that Yzerman is back? life is good.
just for me....I became a fan after 1996
#1. Steve Yzerman
#2. Henrik Zetterberg
#3. Nicklas Lidstorm
#4. Pavel Datsyuk
#5.. Chris Chelios
#6. Johan Franzen
#7. Sergei Fedorov
#8. Igor Larionov
#9. Chris Osgood
#10. Thomas Holmstrom
#11. Brendan Shananhan
#12. Dominik Hasek
#13. Kris Draper
#14. Darren McCarty
#15. Kirk Maltby
As a kid, I never understood the Osgood hate. Osgood was a really good goaltender and all the "Worst goalie to win the cup" bs was so unwarranted.
My favorite wings I’ve watched (08-present) I tried to avoid players that only played one season in Detroit or rookies.
Honorable mention:
Tomas Holmstrom
Brad Stuart
Dan Cleary (would have been on the list but played three years too long and caused young players to be blocked)
Filip Hronek: will be on the list next season.
Darren Helm (08-11) injuries and contract have hurt his place
Chris Osgood
1. Pavel Datsyuk
2. Nick Lidstrom
3. Henrik Zetterberg
4. Anthony Mantha
5. Dylan Larkin
6. Johan Franzen
7. Nick Kronwall
8. Todd Bertuzzi
9. Tyler Bertuzzi
10. Tomas Tatar
11. Gus Nyquist
12. Petr Mrazek
13. Brian Rafalski
14. Luke Glendening
15. Luke Witkowski
Thoughtful list. I liked Tim too.
some i would have thrown on would be dino ciccarelli, paul coffey, darren mccarty, chelios (i wish we would have had him his whole career), larry murphy, and konstantinov.
1) Howe
2) Sawchuk
3) Lindsay
4) Lidstrom
5) Yzerman
From watching your other Red Wings videos I expected Larionov to be #1. Was close lol.
If Larionov played the majority of the 80's in the NHL like Stevie then maybe he'd be #1.
Do you think that Provonost should be in the Hall? I never saw that in him...
Funny your Kitty is like come on make decision and feed me!!!! I give up I will take a nap.

List above corrected!
Thanks for the apology. The play where Osgood tries to play the puck up the wall, and a Shark puts it in the net haunts me.
No love for Marty Lapointe? Scored some big goals for the team.
Dude was as strong as an ox too. He could lay on a hit pretty good too.
@mburk1202 When he was my coach He claimed to have scored more goals redirecting the puck with his ass than he scored shooting the puck. Legend
