  • In the video above, the instructor is conducting a paired stimulus preference assessment with toys. Paired stimulus assessments allow you to determine a child’s preference hierarchy from a select group of items. Sometimes (but not always), a child’s highest-preferred items can be used to reinforce his or her appropriate behaviors. Although paired stimulus assessments are more time-consuming than MSWOs and MSWs, they are appropriate for children who do not consistently scan a large array and make a choice based on preference. Typically, preference assessments with toys and with edibles are conducted separately.

    Thank you for the example! Looks like the student may have a left side bias when selecting the reinforcer, it would be interesting to see if he chooses his "most preferred" reinforcer when it is on the right side of the pair.

    He has a directional bias to the left. The toy previously preferred should've been in the opposite hand to have a clearer idea of what he really wants.
