I garden on clay too - and my garden hand never been dug or planted in since the house was built 30 years ago.I would fork in that newer compost to help it start breaking the clay up. Come the summer the clay will dry out & bake into a solid that’ll be hard to get things growing in.
I added grit into my sunniest borders, and remove any big clods of clay (or break them up) before putting them back in the bed.
Ferns are a good idea for your shady border if you like a modern easy to maintain look- buy a few bigger potted ones and split them up - they’ll fill that border this year for you.
Love your landscaping- looks very professional!

I spoke to an employee at a garden centre, and they said the Buxus hedging is prone to disease and infected with insects that ruin it hedge. I was told a good alternative that won't be affected is a Green Spire Euonymus hedge, which grow upwards and can thicken nicely to create a nice hedge. I unfortunately have the same problem in my front garden and looking to replace the buxus with the green spire.
Also, if you didn't know, westlands do a Buxus Feed and Protect. That might be a good option to look into.

I sometimes use a product called dog rocks to help with dog urine. Also started to fill the dogs water bowl with brita filter water. Seems to have done the trick with urine patches on the lawn.

I really w8sh you would do something with that brick wall ot really lets the garden down. Have you thought about putting the woodlats on it with the vlack sheeting behind it. I think it would look really good

i'd try that shake n rake wild flowers in the empty side, that way you get to change colour each year.

Just had a thought. I had something similar but found out too late. Mine ended up being insect related. Have a check that insect’s aren’t laying egg.
Could be nothing related but makes a good read. Hope that helps

I know it’s a bit late now, but we mixed some manure and leaf mulch into our beds and it made a world of difference. Personally I’d look at hardier shrubs than buxus that seem to be quite prone to disease. Also as some of your garden is shadier, I would embrace plants that will tolerate shade more (viburnum / Acers / ferns that kinda thing). I think it’s more interesting to have variety. As you say though, you’re a novice gardener, so half the fun is experimenting what works and what doesn’t! 👍🏼

Thanks, I’ll take that on board 👍🏻
Got chatting to the guy from the local garden centre and he suggested a few shade tolerant plants. Definitely need more greenery in the garden that isn’t just grass!

@@NoviceGardener I don't think you can post links on YT but I Googled "Shrubs for Shade" and there was an Alan Titchmarsh article for Gardeners World which listed loads of nice plants that will work for a shady garden. If you can get ones that flower in Spring and Summer then thats great for the bees as well 👍🏻

If its box blight then highly recommend Eunoymous instead. I do feel a lot of the issues with your lawn and hedging seem to be because of the lack of light.
It's never a good idea to fight mother nature and there's a lot of scope for a spectacular shady garden here. Ferns, hostas and many other interesting plants thrive in these conditions.

I’ve struggled to generate growth on my beech hedge. I started to use a brand called Rocketgro who makes peat free compost. I used their magic mulch and then followed it up with their chemical free liquid feed. Best thing I’ve done so far.

Buxus disease and pests are apparently getting worse and harder to manage every year. I lost a lovely hedgerow last year to box tree caterpillars. Euonymus plants are a great alternative. 👍

I think I would have removed that end box as it doesn’t look too healthy. Also I think you should have planted them closer together if you are wanting a small hedge.

Tip for next time ... always prune healthy plants first then the diseased ones so you dont transfer the disease and then clean your snips!

Even if you sort that problem out you'll have to battle the box caterpillar. I think these plants are too much too look after.

Get the dog a pee post and about a foot by foot cutting of astroturf from say B&M and they also sell the stuff for the pee smell on astroturf

Should work out well. Those bushes would eventually limit sun to the top lawn.
What flowers are you going to plant?

Too many plants fighting for space looks like, take a few out and that soil could do with refreshing, maybe they need a soil with more drainage if those plants are going to grow a metre high and wide they need space

I think you are overthinking the root cause... It's 99% going to be dog wee. I expect the bush your have replaced will end up the same as he has his favourite spot.
Better to have one dead bush though, than going on your lawn. Id potentially consider if you could replace it with an ornament of some kind and keep encouraging him to wee against that.
But at the end of the day, dog first, garden second.

You are never going to have a great garden. You don’t get enough light in there. Such s shame as it was looking great last year. Same as your lawn, it’s never going to look good all year round. Buxus are a time consuming plant these days. Try some liquid seaweed on them, same as you do the lawn. Mine love the stuff.
