I personally know a person who flew A-10s for 18 years, since retired. You might not think it's pretty but it's a ground troops favorite plane. You really don't hear them coming but they whistle as the go bye and have a distinctive sound when they fire their guns. It is a fantastic plane!
Back in the 90's two of these beauties were at an Airshow at TriState airport in Huntington, WV. They flew a simulated strike on the airport. The airport sits up on a mountaintop and the "A's" essentially disappeared down in the valleys surrounding the airport and suddenly to everyone's surprise popped up at one end of a runway at treetop level and simulated a strafing run across the crowd. I think everyone was speechless for a few minutes after they passed.........they drew a big crowd on the ground display.

BRRRRRRRRRRRT!!! I spent a year deployed to Afghanistan and I can assure you there is nothing the bad guys feared more than sound / sight of an A-10 overhead.
I'd think they never got to hear that sound. : )
Saw the A-10 practicing at Peason Ridge Bombing range Louisiana. This aircraft does things that the public & utube doesn’t see. A specialized aircraft that will always have a place on the battlefield.
Use to watch these at RAF Manston at Ramsgate in Kent, UK back in the early 1980s.. Screaming over the roof tops.
I've always thought the A-10 was a great looking plane. It's like an armored flying Jeep with a BFG on the front. It's well proportioned and balanced.. yeah it's not a slick as the F-16 or F-22 but it's still got all its lines and curves in the right places, just like a good woman.

I'm retired infantry. There's no other aircraft I'd want to see flying in for support 👍
The most loved fighter by allied foot soldiers and the most feared by our enemies on the ground. The plane literally farts out death and destruction when called upon.
Whether A-10 is useful or not, I just can't stop lovin' it

I used to fly these in the Hindu Kush mountains... They were amazing aircraft to fly

If the wings were not so wide you could land one on a carrier without arester wires.
If the wings were not so wide you couldn't land on a carrier without arresting wire because landing speed is much higher. 😉
Remarkably how quiet they are, and how maneuverable at low speeds. I remember watching a pair practicing dogfighting once.

Not anytime soon, the rumors are bullshit they've been talking about that since 2015
There was a legitimate effort to try and retire the a-10, but field ops requested the close-air-support platform. They would not retire it now without a suitable replacement that's an actual A-10 replacement and designed for it. Probably 10-20 years out, seeing as how they just replaced the wings on the entire fleet.
I wonder if it is possible to upgrade the nav/com systems on older aircraft to more modern systems? How much modifying would it take to do that?
@@@jeffkeller1669 It's very possible, and they've already upgraded the A-10's a lot over the years that way.
The C-version, although physically the same aircraft as the A's and B's, are quite different internally:
They have digital displays in the cockpit, GPS navigation, Situational Awareness DataLink (SADL) so they can network with other aircraft, the Pavepenny's (the protruded 'eye' under the cockpit's right side) have been removed since they use way more capable targeting-pods, and the pilots got Helmet-Mounted Cueing Systems, which not only allow for aiming their sensors and weapons at the press of a switch, but also projects images and symbols in front of their eyes, even when they look away from the HUD.
@@rubylight ........that is good they have upgraded the nav/com systems to a more modern system; I don't see how a aircraft can compete with the enemy's aircraft fleets when everything is still anolog in the cockpit? But anyways I'm glad to hear that.
