You took the words right outta my mouth!! As a beginner I totally agree with this! I’m really struggling to draw buildings or really anything from life…Never thought that drawing what I can see would be so challenging. Judging angles is tricky for me. Every time I think it’s a certain angle when I draw it it turns out different than reality and needs multiple redrawing…Hoping observation skills will improve overtime
You’re so right, a detail or two off, no one notices but if the perspective is off ya’ can’t not notice that. It’s like a neon sign. And it screams “amateur” or “beginner”. Love your videos 🤓
I’m trying to learn perspective right now, and I gotta say this is really helpful. I always put vanishing points and horizon line on my drawings, and I find that a lot of the time they end up looking warped because they stretch so much to try and meet them in the small confines of the page
Perspective is not that hard when I think about it, but when it comes to actually draw something, my lines are all over the place )) In your video I've got exactly the explanation I was looking for. Thank you!
I have struggled with perspective feeling like I wasn’t doing it correctly because of all the lessons I’ve taken in it and it’s very complicated. You made it so simple I cannot thank you enough truly thank you enough.
What a great video! I was starting to get bored by the same explanations over and over again, but this one opened my eyes quite well. Thank you for teaching me something I didn’t know yet :)
Thanks Kuro. That’s encouraging to hear. I have two perspective playlists with my channel, one with over 40 videos, the other where I’ve chosen ten and arranged them in an order to make them a bit like a course, if you’re interested. All the best. 😀
I have really been having a block when it comes to perspective, but when you finally said we shouldn’t expect the vanishing points or even the horizon line to be visible in the drawing it finally made sense. I realized I need to develop my ability to visualize them even when they are way off the page
Hell yeah. Ingenious way to learn perspective that builds muscle memory and confidence with sketching. A quick and easy 'think, see, and apply' way to teach it that's approachable! Don't worry about the detail, just try and fail. Love it.
Sometimes we can make things harder than they are. Good teaching I've always thought is making something so obvious you wonder why you are learning it at all!
I have watched dozens of videos and read a lot of books explaining perspective, and none of them ever helped me. Either I was confused about how they made something so big from boxes or how it worked generally. Not being able to draw perspective always put me in an art block because I felt like i stopped improving completely, and first/second/third point perspectives seemed like something i could never reach in drawing because of how complicated it all actually was. Fortunately, a few weeks ago I stumbled upon one of your videos explaining it, and it piqued my curiosity. I am so glad i clicked on that video. A few weeks later I finally managed to overcome that barrier that was holding me back from improving and I started enjoying art again, all because of your videos. The way you explain perspective makes it look incredibly easy, which it really is, and I even found out how fun it is to draw backgrounds. Thank you for creating those videos. They're the only reason I didn't give up on creating art.❤
What an encouraging comment to read Chillie. Thank you for sharing all this with us, much appreciated and all the best having fun with your new found drawing energy.
I am finding it much more useful to see this applied in context of a large building. I know that the small shapes are important practice, but seeing those shapes as representation of the larger, completed work is cementing it in my brain. Thank you for this!
Very Very interesting about the Video. Vizlistion process improvement Basic Drawing of plan planning Drafting, importance about,one- Two point Perceptive Thanks you ❤❤Deom...
i guess the most basic, fundamental building blocks of these drawings really are a lot more important than they seem. it's so interesting, because when you look at Mr. Travers' drawings, the first thing that meets your eye is how well and how pleasantly th drawing matches the real thing. and i think for some reason the part of our brains responsible for higher order thinking erroneously misattributes this to things like details and ornamentation. however, what we're really doing is subconsciously being impressed by the resemblance between the similarities in perspective between the drawing and the real thing. what a brilliant method to boil perspective down into not much more than the pure angles of edges as they appear to us. thank you Mr Travers for yet another gem in drawing instruction ! :)
When i start drawing and understand some of the basic techniques i see the world differently now specially when im looking at the architectures on different angles, i like it. Thanks Stephen!
So it's much more like training our eyes to catch the silhouette and once you do it after some time you will get it instinctively. So the perspective principles are much more needed for when you need to construct from nothing or be extremely precise.
Not necessarily the silhouette, but the angle of the perspective lines, particularly the two extremes - depending on the roof shape these may not be the silhouette. Yes, the principles are much more necessary when drawing from imagination. 😀
This made it much more easier for me. I was getting bored watching other people explaining the same thing about perspective. Thank goodness I found you ( ´◡‿ゝ◡`). You're an angel sent by god🙏🏻.
I always loved to draw grand architecture but it was always so frustrating for me because i didnt use perspective! This video helped me realize that that is what i have been doing wrong for all those frustrating drawings. so thank you!
Honestly if you just push through and get mileage I don't think it's hard to get the basics down at an intuitive level. The issue is that people try to do it perfectly and line everything up rather than learning to feel it out and make a lot of mistakes. Most of my hinderance in art is usually just trouble doing things I'm not good at.
I think an unrecognised problem is we watch a video and assume it’s told me what I need to know to apply it. In fact most real life scenes do not fit directly for artists into the perspective theoretical construct. We need more info we don’t realise the videos haven’t given us think but we are the problem. I have a few videos on this. All the best with your drawing Cory. 😀
For me it's an only possible choice, because I can't get it right by feeling. I have no vision, I can't capture it, so all perspective for me is just plain struggle. Hope for a sudden breakthrough after hours of drawing, watching videos and studying the object.

Another tip for people who want to understand perspective and 3D better: try tricking your brain into drawing a rectangle at an angle in 3d space. Tell your brain that the canvas or paper are a kind of wall that is at an angle in 3D space, and try sketching a few shapes from different angles. At some point, you'll realize that you can "tilt your head" mentally. You're still drawing a square or rectangle, but from a different mental perspective. The paper isn't real!

Wow very helpful❤😁
Im sorry, I don’t quite understand. Is this a photo reference in my video?
@@stephentraversart My apologies it was a reference photo I found on the internet and was trying to draw from. I figured it out, it had multiple vanishing points I didn't know that was possible but I did some research on it.
I’m glad. 😀
