- Join Cindy and her friend, Paula McKinlay, as they create a beautiful quilted jacket. This jacket can be made using an old quilt that you just can't part with, one you piece on your own, or from a cheater print. The pattern can be purchased anywhere that carries Riley Blake Designs patterns.

You gals are too funny! 😂 Way to go, Cindy! Way to stick with it. 👍🏻
Love the jacket!❤
I've made several of these over the years. As a garment maker i would release the pressure on your machine foot and use a walking foot. You shouldn't have to pull the jacket through the machine. Yes keep the weight up on the table to allow it to flow freely.
French seams are sewn wrong sides together first, trimmed then sewn right sides together to enclose raw edges. This technique is flat binding. All lovely jackets.
Thank you for comments! I will try a walking foot next time, and glad to know this can be called a flat binding technique.
I've also made a lot of quilted jackets, for myself as well as commission jobs and taught 2-3 day workshops and have another jacket or three on my to-do list. Agree with lowering the foot pressure and use a walking foot, but in recent years I prefer the Janome Acufeed system as that's even better than a walking foot and has a narrow footplate which is perfect for the narrow seams and great for attaching the narrow binding. French seams are different and most often used in jeans and similar areas where strength is required.
you trim after you sew the wrong sides together ? I'm newer & hadn't heard that before . Thank you 💞💞 & for all the tips , thank you also. Very helpful
Love the collar on this jacket. No one should be afraid of that sleeve, it is an easy one to put in. A tip: Take that quilted fabric from the longarmer and wash it before you cut out your jackets. Then you are sure when you have to wash your jacket it won't shrink and be unwearable.
Every piece of fabric I buy goes to the laundry and through a full wash cycle before going back to the sewing room. Not only for shrinking, but also excess color dye can ruin a finished garment/quilt/etc. Depending on the fabric I often serge both cut ends together firstly to prevent fraying and secondly to prevent tangles in the washing machine, it's really quick and easy to remove 2 or 3 thread serging before it goes on the cutting table.
I love barn jackets these remind of them ,but beautiful ones❤the best for cold weather cosy days coming and going
More than 10 years ago, II purchased a fall color quilted jacket with the solid pumpkin-y orangey-rust color on the inside, French seams and it is straight-lined quilted 1/4" apart. From shoulders to wrist & from shoulders to waist. The color was designed to stand up - like the "old-fashioned Nehru collars". I found it easier to wear a tank top or collar-less shirt underneath. I KNOW I would like this lying flat collar much better! Great job, both of you! Great instructions...and superb camera work.
I would have like to see the "Duster" in a full-length camera shot, however!
This is so cute and I love Minki Kim’s fabric in it! You did a great job with your fabric gymnastics Cindy! live thus pattern. Thank you for sharing this tutorial.❤❤
Oh my goodness what a lovely jacket I can’t wait to get the pattern save this video so that I can refer to it as I make mine, thank you so much Riley ❣️🧵✂️🪡💓❤️💕💗💖
Beautiful jacket. I’m going to make this. Just as an aside a bound seam is called a Honk Kong seam. A French seam is sewn wrong sides together , sew seam, then turned so right sides are touching then seam sewn again.
This was so fun to see, - beautiful jackets Ladies! 🤩👍👍
Great tutorial, Ladies!!! 😍
I made jackets in the late 80’s and 90’s and she is right I got stopped all the time and even had some who wanted buy it right off my body. I usd the fux leather on the seams and pockets on a couple.
Adorable! I can't wait to make one for myself! Thank-you Cindy and Paula. Pam Miller
Wow! What a great project. I could definitely see myself wearing it...
I love this!! I see all kinds of possibilities with this pattern!! I think I'm going to make mine with a LONGER collar (like a "shawl" collar that comes a little further down the front of the jacket) AND, I'm going to make it as a VEST and bind the armholes. Thank you for the inspiration!!! 🥰
I love these! I cannot see me doing that method of "binding" on the sleeves, though. That wore me out 🤣🤣
I love all of this! How wonderful!🥰
I've made these too. They turn out very nice. Lots of compliments!
I make the quilty pieces, never used an old quilt. (Mary Fons would not approve...)
LOVE the pattern! As noted no link. Another shop has the pattern available but there is $8 Shipping charge!
Can you please share the name of the other shop that has this pattern 😊

what fun!! to make one is on my bucket list
Definitely want to make one!
I really enjoyed this!
I have made a couple of quilted jackets, but I only overcast the inside seams. I love how you demonstrated covering the seams with binding. Beautiful finish. I want to buy Paula's pattern. I'll find it at Riley Blake Designs.
This reminds me of mending my kid’s jeans!😂
Thank you for sharing your information on making the quilted jacket. I have always wanted to know how to do it. You make it look so easy ❤.
So much fun! I need to know where to get the pattern

There is no pattern in the description??
@@jilbertbdo not see pattern info???
@@bobbiedovin2303 They say get it where Riley Blake Patterns are sold. I found it on Etsy and by googling for a couple other sites.
My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe has the pattern (as well as a kit) for sale.
I just ordered the pattern off Etsy, i also found another coat and robe patterns that will also work for quilted fabric. Take your extension table off your sewing machine. It will be easier without it.
Would it make sense to use a walking foot to sew the quilted pieces together?
I have been wanting to make a jacket for so long but didn't know where to start or have a clue what pattern to use. Thank you for this. Wondering how my orphan blocks would work out.
Probably using a walking foot would be easier....on the French seams.
Exactly what i was thinking!
I will try that next time! Thanks!
It is nice to sew together or at least have a helper ☺
Don’t tell Mary Fons 😂😂
Love the jackets. Just wondering also what the name of the quilt is in the background?
I don’t understand I have to register to purchase a pattern ?

Go to Riley Blake Designs. I saw the pattern listed under patterns. You can purchase it there
@@samoller Our website is for RBD wholesale shops/customers. If you Google the pattern, you should be able to find one of our many retailers that carry it.
Instead of pinning, you could use Elmer‘s school glue. I think that would work better than pins.
Question: I’m wondering if there is reason why you couldn’t bind the inside of the sleeves and the inside of the side seams first. And then second, set in the sleeves and bind the inside of the arm hole. It seems like that would be more manageable..
What did you use for batting please?
I don’t see the pattern in the description. Is it just one size?
Hi there - Paula McKinlay's Quilted Jacket Pattern is a "one size fits almost everyone" pattern.
Love this jacket !! Could someone tell me how many yards,do I need for binging ?😊and wear can I buy your lining at ?🙂Thanks !

What is the size of the pattern? I am a 1 X. Where can I get it?

This is a lovely jacket. What sizes does it come in? There is no point in purchasing the pattern if it will not fit.
Hi there - Paula McKinlay's Quilted Jacket Pattern is a "one size fits almost everyone" pattern.
@@kellymorris8088 Thank you for your quick response! Unfortunately, "fits almost everyone" doesn't work for me. Guess I'll stick with my old pattern!
Why don't you make use of the arm on machine and slip sleeve over it?
Hello from Texas can you do the jacket without the collar?
I have. Although, I made mine straight up the front (like a shirt, not v'ed like this) then made a short (1 1/2") mandarin collar.
You can also do a true French seam (trim the batting out of first seam) and not use "binding" on the seams. You still need to bind the edges tho.
Can’t buy the pattern. All sold out

What does it mean when you say, "french seams"?
Hi there! You can google it for more details but a French seam is a sewing technique that creates a neat, enclosed seam finish on the inside of a garment or project.
What is the name of the pattern
Please google "Paula Mckinlay quilted jacket pattern" to find a local quilt shop or favorite online retailer to purchase it.
Geez, roll that sleeve and put a clip at each end, it will NOT unroll, and your sewing will be easier (no pulling), and your seam will have nice straight, uniform stitches. OMG.
Also when you roll the sleeve, have the roll on 'top', not underneath where it will be dragged into the stitching area and get sewn into the seam. OMG is right Susan...sounds like we were both seeing the same things. Never pull fabric into the machine as it will stretch and the finished seams will be wonky, needles will break and worst of all, the machine timing can be thrown off and need a trip to the repair shop to be re-timed.
On the site seems and the sleeve. Can you use maybe a zipper foot to make that same easier?
Move over, please, so we can SEE it.
