We were lucky enough to catch up with one of our favorite groups Pentatonix at the 2012 American Music Awards this past weekend.
They chatted all about the release of their Christmas album, which has risen to the top of the ITunes Christmas charts, and also performed their complete medley from the 2012 American Music Awards pre-show. It was a cappella awesomeness!!! The mash-up included Justin Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me,' Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Getting Back Together, Nicki Minaj's 'Starships,' Rihanna's 'Where Have You Been,' Fun.'s 'We Are Young,' Pink's 'Blow Me,' & Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger.'

Yeah, i still cant believe they didnt know who they were, they have been posting lots of videos before this and THEY WERE ON THE FRICKIN SING OFF!
Right! Everyone is looking past or around them and then they start singing and it's like finally you recognize the amazing people who have graced you with their presence.
She said they were posting videos before this, like before this interview not before the sing off, and that they were on the sing off
I love how no one in the background knew who they were, and then like gaped when they started singing.

At 01:21 Mitch really wasn't pleased about how the interviewer said, "ready, set, go."
He was like, "We'll start when we will want to" 🤣🤣
This just proves to the haters that PTX doesn't need all the extra reverb, auto tune, fillers, or whatever.

I love how they call the public's attention from beginning to sing to the end :D
No matter where they are, they become absolutely immersed with the music and the performance and you can see how much they love it just by looking at their faces and it's just such a joy to watch.
Too bad the woman kept swinging the mic around, you can actually see the look on Avi's fave like "FFS give me the mic", I guess no awesomesauce low notes for us then...
i agree she should have let them hold the mic so that the can even out their sound.
At what moment did Avi have that look on his face?
OMG WHEN KIRSTIE SANG STRONGER. I couldn't take it anymore. It was too amazing. I mean, the whole medley was AMAZING, but i loved that part!
PTX the best a capella group in the world...they put a capella to mainstream music!

Why the heck does she keep swinging the mic around? Just keep it in one place, PTX can handle the sound balancing themselves.

This woman needs to hold the mic in one place. I understand she was excited but sometimes she needs to remember she is working and act professionally

It actually sounded pretty cool with the mic at one person at a time, because I could distinctly hear the harmonies that otherwise would just be from the background

Olive Tan the whole point is that they all contribute to the music. There is no point having it on one person and then not hearing the others 😭😭😭😭😭
I'd only ask please, the next time keep the mic in the middle, because the audio got completely lost for us in video, as she put it closer to who were doing the leading parts, so most parts from Kevin and mainly Avi couldn't barely be heard.
Hollywire should disable the comments on this video. There is no way that she could have captured all of their voices even if the mic was dead center. Not with the mic she had. And expecting her to bring a special mic or 3 or 5 just for the group is ridiculous and unreasonable. She did the best she could.

The reason u can't hear him cuz the mic isn't by him for one and secondly he kinda has a low voice.

You don't realize quite how old this is until you pay attention to the song choices...this was when I was in middle school!
Just shows that the trio is wonderful, but they need Avi and Kevin to fill out the sound. Couldn't hear either of them and what a shame!
Yeah, I know it's challenging to catch all their voices with just one mic but seriously, she should have just held the mic in place and not wave it around like that.

Getting 5 people to perform on the spot in the middle of a crowd with one mic is hard to pull off. I thought you did great. Anyone who's watched Pentatonix videos will notice that the mic is always closest to Avi and Kevin (the drum and bass). Even without hearing them real well in this video, their 3 main vocalists sound amazing. That extra low end just rounds out the group perfectly.
They are always a joy to watch!!! Such talented young people ❤❤❤❤❤

+Sole'a Harmon the reason why they never ever cover Taylor's songs. They made it really clear few years back they just can't get it right no matter what, and they always end up ruining it. Not sure why they decided to throw some in this medley...nevertheless their respect for Taylor is commendable.

+MC It sounded like they were told which songs to put in the melody and they didn't have much of a choice. I have heard them talk about not being able to do Taylor Swift as well!

That's funny how the people behind them were like didn't care bout them, but when they're started singing, everyone was like filming them 😂😂😂
How have i not heard this medley :O Yeah kevin's beatboxing could be heard but y'all were missing out on the bass! damn i agree it does show that you need the bass to fill out their sound
yeah..i haven't heard it on there albums eitheir! or this is just a special version for the place they visited!
i think the reporter girl was so used to focusing the mic on the lead that she didn't know how to fricken stop

The fact that not everyone standing there was entranced is unbelievable. PTX is so good. I'd be standing there in awe.

Despite that this was performed with just one mic (which I'm sure was audio set for interviews), the audio quality of this performance was wayyy better than it came across on the actual pre-show! Thanks for posting!!

Could anyone else tell that starships and we are young were already arranged? Maybe it's just because I know the arrangements, but they sounded more organized than the others

omg, i loved kirstie's lead.... i wish she had taken "we're never getting back together" instead of scott. i heard their arrangement of the entire song and it sounds much better with her on lead vocals.... but what can i say, i love hearing them do anything, anywhere. thanks for uploading this! :)

Vocalists, especially in the acapella field, are trained to adjust to the setting of the microphone. This is to maintain a balanced blend. By keeping the mic in the middle, you could showcase the group, rather than just soloists, and the song arrangements are made to sound the best as a group.No way to know this, but just for future reference, let the singers blend to their mic! :)
