Great job Mike and many thanks for the shoutout. When filling cracks with Milliput I have found that it is best to paint a bit of slow set epoxy resin into the crack first and immediately pack the Milliput in on top of the wet resin. The Milliput then fills the bulk of the void and pushes the resin deep into the crack ensuring a good bond to full depth. Cheers Jim
That was a big chunk of spalted beech but a testament to how effective the glue block is! I too have had issues with some cracking into the project when moisture readings have shown below 10%. The use of Milliput is a good idea, I've had some very results with it. I just wish they made it in more colours! Looking forward to Part 2!
A beautifully spalted, large piece of wood like that definitely deserves the time and energy to get it right. Your friend and the gift receiver will be very happy with your craftsmanship and patience, I'm sure. Great job, Mike! Phil
Great video. It was just what I was looking for, have just turned an oak bowl and wire brushed the outside then scorched it but have now got a crack, I’ve got some black Milliput so am going to try and fill it while keeping the texture I’ve created.
Nice start to what looks to be a beauty! Well done Mike and you were sporting a sort of Nakedness while turning! Thanks for sharing! Sorry I haven't been around much but My schedule is all wacky right now! I am all over the San Francisco Bay Area and my hrs are all over the place at different times! Be well turn safe and much Love!
Nothing ventured nothing gained ... some fool said many years ago!!!1 Hopefully it'll end up OK ... if not ... it was still fun to try. Thanks for watching Graham, always appreciated mate. Cheers Mike
That looks lovely mate and looking forward to part two .....I keep saying " I must have a crack at using milliput " pun intended ? no ...well yes really ;) Take care mare, Bram
Mike, I hope that piece will dry properly so as to be able to turn it in a few months. It is a beautiful piece for sure. I love the spalting. Great job as always.
A first class demonstration mike. Love the spalting effect. Milliput looks great stuff. I'm sure the superglue will hold well. Looking forward to part 2. Also loving that hope 1/2" bowl gouge. I'm so tempted to get in myself.
Gorgeous piece of wood! I can’t wait for the follow up video when you finish turning it. But that’s the rub for us turners, isn’t it, the agonizing wait!
Oh the joys of wood turning. All I seem to be turning these days is cracked or punky wood. That's going to be a beautiful bowl Mike, can't wait for part 2 😀 How about some black Milliput in some of the cracks to ape the spalting. Just an idea. 😀
That's going to be a beautiful bowl, Mike. Inspires me to take another look at Milliput. One of these days I might even try it myself. Awesome video presentation, as always, Mike! Take care, .....Gord
Good job Mike. I hope you have turned lemons into lemonade but time will tell. You were correct when you said the wood was too pretty to not give it a try. Looking forward to seeing how it works out in a few months.
ARC Wood Craft - I just wish Milliput was cheaper, available in more colors & sold at HomeDepot or Lowes. Our Hobby Lobby has the same old tube of white on it’s shelf. It does turn nicely & finishes well.
I have experimented with colouring Milliput using acrylic paint. It needs a lot of working in but it works well to change the standard green/yellow to whatever you want.
Tony Campbell - the standard seems to be white, black or grey. I see Mike using terra cotta. Ive also seen turquoise as an optional color, but not from the UK vendor.
Great video Mike. Curious why you chose not to seal the blank with Anchor seal or PVA glue on the end grain. How do you expect the Milliput to work with high moisture content, if you are concerned?
Fantastic job mike as usual does a hot melt glue gun really hold that well I have one but have never used it any tips greatly appreciated cheers buddy 👍
Thanks Clive, I have 100% faith in the integrity of a hot glue joint providing both surfaces are dry and the glue is properly hot, with a good quality gun and glue sticks. I have had wood fail due to a catch but the glue joint remained intact. Hope this helps. Cheers Mike
Looking forward to the finishing, in a few months... Is it ready yet? How about now? How about now??? I don't know if I can wait that long! 😭😭😭😭😭 Good turn, mate, well done. 😋👍
Thank you Richard I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The "bendy" hose I got from Axminster Tools & Machinery. many years ago, Record Power also do one I believe. Hope this helps Cheers Mike
That's such a shame about the immerging cracks, but I really like the idea of making a feature of them with Milliput. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. 👊👊👊
Hi Mike, I often use Milliput as a filler, as it's much cheaper and useable than resin. What was the starting moisture content? Did you take a measurement from inside the bowl as well? Although it depends on the wood, Ive had a lot of seepage of the CA glue into the adjacent wood that will not go away, just with sanding. Now I've started to apply sanding sealer locally to prevent the seepage and it seems to work. The only downside to Milliput is the limited colour range, you can add colouring to it but it takes quite a bit of dye to get strong colours .BTW that is a lovely piece of wood and will make a wonderful present...looking forward to Part 2
Excellent start! Pity about the cracking. Not really unexpected, however. And good pun fodder: "Now I'll get cracking!" The wood beat ya to it and you taught it a lesson it'll never forget! 😉
Hi Mike. With this video you have broken any myths about how good glue blocks are for supporting pieces for turning no matter how big or small. Hope it doesn't alter too much during the drying process over the next few months. Cheers, Huw
Hi Huw, I have used glue blocks for a long, long time now on certain projects, and have never, to date, had the joint fail, providing the glue is applied correctly. Thanks for watching. Cheers Mike
Mike, I love you videos and learned to turn a lot from you. But, you started covering up the sounds of cutting with music. I don't understand why you and others do that. The cutting sounds tell me a lot. Too bad, I will miss you. Larry

ARC Wood Craft - I just wish Milliput was cheaper, available in more colors & sold at HomeDepot or Lowes. Our Hobby Lobby has the same old tube of white on it’s shelf. It does turn nicely & finishes well.
Mike if it cracks more make a composite segmented bowl with other wood or resin
ARGHHHHHH!!!!!
Did you mention SEGMENTED!!!! ;)
Thanks for watching and the suggestion, hopefully it won't come to that.

Good luck with the drying out. If the cracking doesn't progress any farther it will be a very nice bowl.
Thanks glen, fingers crossed my friend.

Mike
Fingers crossed there are no more issues with the cracks! You're right though, it does look a lovely piece of wood and a shame not to persevere.
Hopefully it'll be an acceptable piece in the end matt, and thanks for watching.

Mike
Great video Mike. Curious why you chose not to seal the blank with Anchor seal or PVA glue on the end grain. How do you expect the Milliput to work with high moisture content, if you are concerned?
I was given the blank with heavy cracking already Kenneth .... that's why it was not sealed by me ;)
