Sam, your turnings are among the most interesting and beautiful on RUclips, and your videos are inspirational! Thanks for sharing your experience, knowledge, and methods.
Tks for the reference to this video. I do truly love cross-grain glue ups. With thicker pieces, the TURNING can be somewhat a pain. But oh so worth it. Great looking bowl and tips on the glue-up. SAFE TURNING, John
Another nice project finished off and what a retro fit it turned out to be. All it takes is a bit of imagination to use up those scraps. Beautiful work as always Sam. All the best to you and Cheryl with the move. Thanks for the post at a busy time like this for you. Looking forward to your next post, possibly from your new shop? Regards and best wishes to you Sam
Thanks Sam, had a blowout tonight that cost me the top half of a bowl but after watching your video I have decided not to scrap it but do something similar to what you have done. Lovely job as always. Safe turning
Our pastes are probably packed up for the move, they would have also done a beautiful job on the bowl and kept it food safe, but non the less, its a beautiful little bowl! Good luck in the move Sam!! Annette
Sweet bowl, Sam. I think I will have to try something similar. Also, I hear a tad bit of salt in the glue will reduce the slip and slide problem. Happy moving!
Good way to increase the interest in that piece, very nice. I notice the walls in the shop are a bit more visible all the time! Good luck and low stress with your move.
Very pretty little bowl. I really like the accent ring although I think it's not the one you showed in the glue up. The middle ring appears thicker now. Better proportion and the figure shows very well. I like the rim detail too. I am amazed you are able to produce videos while in the middle of packing for a move. I recently canceled plans for a move from Georgia to Florida just because I couldn't cope with the hassle of packing and reorganization required. Good luck with yours.
First the accent ring. You are right. Something is different. I am often guilty of changing something-and at time I am a little unaware of what I did or changed. But the final detail IS different. Now moving. After this chaos, I am not sure why anyone would ever move. It was painful and difficult. Never again. But having so mush stuff in my shop made it more difficult. Sam
"Sam! You got that glue out!?" "...Well...." "You HAVE, haven't you? What have I told you?" "Er... not to get the glue out..." "Without...?" "Without supervision" "That's right! Why didn't you call me?" "Er... I forgot" "Forgot my a...! I been saying the same thing for thirty years! You didn't forget!" "It's a nice bowl, dear..." "IT FRIGGIN' BETTER BE!!!" Beautiful work Sam...! But, man, that glue up was something else. It was a joy to watch.
How do you like my glue job.....pretty messy. I saw Jim Mcphail years ago. You should check him out at... jimmcphail.com He has a really good process for making his pieces. He saves cutoffs to help catalog the wood in a particular piece. I would love to make more of these-need more time in the day. Sam
I totaly feel your pain moving! My stuff is split in half right now as well. Did you change the stack? The first glue up looked different. If you did then bravo! That thick piece of maple in the middle rocks!
Hi Sam thanks for sharing this technique - very nice work as always. Question please? I was taught many (many) years ago that when glung veneer, that you only put the glue on the substrate, not on the veneer - as puting glue on the veneer will absorb unevenly and cause wrinkles or voids. Obviously you do not subscribe to that theory, so I would like your opinion on this practice. Thanks and regards Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontaripo Canada (PS - I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, so I am very familiar with Montana and I am sure you will enjoy your new State.)
Dennis, you are probably right. However I don't think that wrinkles are an issue here. As they will not be seen. I may have gone overboard with the glue in this one-hahahaha Thanks Sam
Very nice bowl. I thought that the wire edge, or burr, did the cutting, but you took it off the scraper. Did you just sharpen it? Or have I been doing it wrong by leaving the burr? Thanks.
I copied my response to a previous comment-it answers you question. "Removing the burr makes the scraper less aggressive. I did this at first because the the bowl was not trued up. When the surface is uneven the tool will catch more easily. Adjusting the burr (either removing it adding it) is an important thing to consider when using a scraper. No burr means the tool is safer. A burr on the tool means it will cut cleaner." Sam
Sam enjoyed your layered bowl, looking forward to trying one it sounds like you are going to move, but how can a Wyomingwoodturner go to Montana? Are you going to change your handle? have fun with your move.

The rim, the foot, the layers, the finish... wow!

What a beautiful Piece Sam. Thanks for sharing. Your glue up has given me some ideas about a project I am getting ready to start. Thanks!
What a beautiful turn! The end turn made the process worth the time it took. Once again, BEAUTIFUL TURN!! SAFE TURNING, John
You are always an inspiration Sam! That is one gorgeous little bowl!
Hi Gary. Nice to hear from you. Sam
That came out beautifully Sam. As always, thank you for your inspiration my friend.
Nice addition to a plain bowl. Good luck on the move. 👍🇺🇸
Hi sam and yet another beautiful bowl with veneers decorated. great.
Thanks Sam, had a blowout tonight that cost me the top half of a bowl but after watching your video I have decided not to scrap it but do something similar to what you have done. Lovely job as always. Safe turning
Scraping can cause or result in very bad catches. That is why removing the burr can make it less aggressive. See comment above. Sam
Beautiful Sam,and made with minimal equipment! Good way to use up odds and ends before moving!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁
Thanks Sam, just a few months ago I rough turned a walnut bowl with the same design in mind. Going to let it dry and then have at it. Great vid, thx.
Very nice! That accent band added a lot to the bowl. Thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous little bowl!
Nice bowl, Sam. Looking forward to more from you in your new workshop.
Cool bowl and great presentation thank you.
Beautiful technique, Sam. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful
pretty bowl and neat glue up, I think I could find a few pieces to try this process with. thanks Sam.
Very nice, I like the middle ring the grain looks great.
great looking bowl! Good luck on your move.
I love that rim detail. It brings the entire piece together. So petty.
Great looking bowl Sam, love the detail!
Thanks Carl All moved in to our new home. Next-building a shop. See you at SWAT. Sam
Always like your projects!
Nicely done!

I love your presentation. Looking forward to your new shop. I wish I was closer to you (Kansas). I would join your club in a heart beat! 🤠
Very nice! Thank you for sharing!

gorgeous
That bevel on the rim really makes the bowl look finished.
Yes glad I did it. Sam
Good way to increase the interest in that piece, very nice. I notice the walls in the shop are a bit more visible all the time! Good luck and low stress with your move.
Nice bowl Sam

ive watched this umpteen times and still cant wrap my head around how by lying the veneer flat gives that effect when finished
Yes it is very cool and an easy and simple process. thanks for watching. Sam
@@WYOMINGWOODTURNER ive been watching you for ages i remember you hurt your hand badly its good to see its back to normal

I love this little bowl. I have a commissioned piece to make, and I think I will do something similar.

@@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Your glue job was interesting to say the least. But, in your defense, glue squeeze out is always better than not enought.
Sam, put a little negative rake on that scraper and it’ll cut much better.
I totaly feel your pain moving! My stuff is split in half right now as well. Did you change the stack? The first glue up looked different. If you did then bravo! That thick piece of maple in the middle rocks!
Yes I did. I am not sure what I did-I just can't remember now. ???? Sam

Nicely done Sam awesome little bowl, as always great video. How's your move going? Thanks for sharing.
All moved in...thanks Sam
Sam enjoyed your layered bowl, looking forward to trying one it sounds like you are going to move, but how can a Wyomingwoodturner go to Montana? Are you going to change your handle? have fun with your move.
Yes I think your question puts it in the right perspective. How can the Wyomingwoodturner go to Montana? But no, I will keep my handle.... Sam
What did you use to get such a nice shine on it?
Yes, I think the finish is excellent. I sprayed it with an acrylic lacquer and then buffed. Sam
Dumb question, Sam - why did you remove the burr from the scraper? I always thought the burr was the real cutting edge on the tool?
Removing the burr makes the scraper less aggressive. I did this at first because the the bowl was not trued up. When the surface is uneven the tool will catch more easily. Adjusting the burr (either removing it adding it) is an important thing to consider when using a scraper. No burr means the tool is safer. A burr on the tool means it will cut cleaner. Sam
Makes sense. Thanks, Sam.
when you get to Mt. are going to change name of program ? LIKE THE BOWL!!
NO...no name change. Sam
Love the bowl Sam. Does this mean you will be the "Montana Wood Turner" now?
No....still Wyomingwoodturner
Sam
Why is the centerpiece much wider than the pieces in the glue up?
If I remember correctly, I changed or added to the center piece I glued in..... not sure, Sam
The accent ring you used on Bowl wasn’t the one you made on screen.
You "shoots a few brads in the center..."?
So the veneers would not move around. Worked well. Sam
Your place is starting to sound empty
