I have discovered these Mississippi Kites, Here in Chickasha Oklahoma. Chickasha Rose Hill cemetery, has around 30 breading pairs. I do my morning workout here every morning and enjoy watching them. They are very playful, like manuvering and racing each other, they fly low and fast past me. I now have them in my trees above my house, and they talk to each other. They are magnificent. In the mornings it goes like this: 1st. The cardinals, wake up and sing, 2nd. the blue jays, and then the Kites take flight. This is the best my mornings offer, but have come to love them, flying here.
Two adults and a Juvenile landed in my Oak Tree today and they are stunning birds. Very distinct call which made me look up. I was totally blown away by all three sitting there watching me.
Thank you for the informative video. We have two Kites that live at our farm in rural Mississippi. We’ve always enjoyed watching them fly over our field. I always thought “there’s the hawk” but they are definitely kites. :)
Such a coincidence that you mentioned your trouble with pronouncing those words. Just today I had looked up this poem that I remember from childhood, "Amidst the mists and fiercest frosts with barest wrists and stoutest boasts, he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts." I enjoyed your video. I've seen a Mississippi kite twice lately in our yard. They're rare around here.
These birds have been migrating to Southwestern Nebraska for the past two years. So beautiful and such a treat to watch, as we have never seen them before. Thank you for the information in this video so we can learn a little more about them.
It's my pleasure, I'm glad you could be seeing these amazing birds! Oklahoma seems like the place they could be, I live in Texas and they are migrants here. Thanks for your kind words and take care my friend :)
Thank you for this info! We have just discovered this species hanging out daily in our backyard in the panhandle of Florida and wanted to learn more. They truly fly beautifully and skillfully.
This is really cool information. A kite couple raised a few chicks on a tree across the street from my house here in Little Rock, Arkansas and I’ve been trying to identify them for the past 3 months or so and I just now figured it out thanks to your video. They are such fascinating animals! Thanks for the video!
Thank you for this informative and well narrated video! I also enjoyed the smooth jazz in the background. We watched this video after noticing two kites circling above us.
It is my pleasure my friend, I'm glad you like the jazz! I feel like birds and jazz is an amazing combo lol. That's so cool that you got to see them in flight! They remind me of jet planes with their angled wings and tails :)
Dang the kites must have really liked that spot then! That's so cool that you got to them and I hope the crickets weren't too bad. Thanks for your kind words and lovely story :)
thanks for the information, we have a bunch of chickens and one by one they kept disappearing, until one day i saw a big familiar bird (a lot of them) so i kept researching and found out it was a kite. now loads of people are pleased to see kites. ( i hate kites). they took my poor little chickens and chicks.
There is a pair in my red oak tree in my front yard. There appears to be a juvenile with them. I've never seen one that I recall til this summer. I live in the middle of suburbia - Plano, TX - about 8 miles north of Dallas county.
Wonderful video, thank you so much. This week the kites returned to my yard. This is the 3rd year they have nested at the top of my oldest pine tree. I have enjoyed them so much. I used to go see them at the park where they were communal and hanging out in some old oaks. I never thought that some would come to my yard. I live in the Houston/Cypress area suburbs. I wonder though if they are picking off the chimney swifts that call my chimney home.
You're so very welcome! It's my pleasure and that's so nice that you get to see them again!! Wow that's amazing, I bet the view of the nest is stunning. Yeah I know what you mean, I've seen them in a lot of suburban places like soccer fields and even backyards too. And wow, I live near that area too! Specifically more closer to Katy but I'm very close lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to pick off a couple chimney swifts but I feel like they would be hard to catch and the kites would rather catch insects. Either way, I hope the chimney swifts stay safe!
Thank you! A wonderful video with great information and captures to learn about the Mississippi Kite. I was impressed to hear it allows Mockingbirds, Blue Jays and Sparrows nearby to nest. A beautiful bird with a lot of character. Enjoy the day. Best regards, Cathy
I should be thanking you! I really appreciate your kind words and how you took your time out of your day to watch my video. I'm glad you find this video useful in learning about the Kite! They really are interesting characters and can be both friendly and aggressive. Thanks Cathy, your comment means a lot to me :))
This video was very informative, thank you! I started researching them because we have a nest in our front yard. They are amazing to watch! Initially thought it was a bald eagle because of the white head, but when I compared the sound of their call I knew it was the Kite.
About 3 years ago maybe 4 a pair appeared here in SC about 60 miles from the coast, on a small river Lynches river... inland about 8 miles outside of Florence SC I've lived here for 27 years. I'm an avid bird watcher and photographer. I started to pay close attention when I noticed the breeding nesting pair as the male fed the female ... Since that afternoon I've observed the return of 1 or more nesting pairs to my area. They are hear now showing up about 2 to 3 months ago.. it's early June 2024 now.
Thank you so much! This one was packed with info so I hope it wasn't too much. I really appreciate you saying that, I hope you have a wonderful day and take care my friend :))
I learned a lot about this species, thank you! (: Your avian videos are really great. My favorite species is a Barred Owl. I think a factual video about them would be dope!
I'm so glad you were able to learn a lot! It's my pleasure, thank you so much for watching and saying such nice things about my video :)) Barred Owls are such cool bird! You have great taste and I'll make sure to make that video soon!!
I dream of it all the time! Sometimes I wish I was as free as a bird and could fly along with them :) Have a good one my friend, thanks for your comment!
Hiii! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I know exactly what you mean, I've had a subscriber thinking it was the same bird but they just look really similar haha. It's my pleasure to share, thanks as always for watching and supporting me :))
Glad we can agree! I appreciate your kind words and your support by watching the video. I wish you a great rest of your week and I hope you have a good day :)
They really are something special! And you are so right, it's funny seeing a raptor eat bugs but hey we'll take it :D Take care my friend, I hope you have a wonderful day and rest of your week!!
Hey Don! Many thanks for your kind words my friend. I really appreciate you saying all those nice things :D Have a good rest of your week my friend, I hope you have another nice walk soon!
my kites seem to be late this year its almost the end of march and i havent seen any .im in nw Florida middle of town And they usually nest in pine trees across the street. But we have fireworks In July I noticed that I only see like 1 juvenile When it's time for them to Migrate I'm sure the loud noise probably causes some to fall from the nest
I'm so glad you do too! They really are cool birds. It's interesting that it looks like your black shouldered kites too ;) I'd love to see those with my own eyes sometime. Have a great day my friend and take care!
@@J_Birds at first I was surprised to see it in my yard. Knowing what they sound and look like, I am more aware of just how many are around my home. This is a near outskirts suburban town in the Southwest. Doing the further learning that they prefer insects it made more sense they hang around my home a lot. My yard is loaded with great sized insects and wasps. I neglected to call animal welfare wildlife rehab in my city to check on the Kite, but signs point to a recovery. Hoping so and also hope it decides to come back and set up shop in neighborhood again. I love their calls.
During migration last year 2021 winter a group of them killed several of our young stags my husband raises gamecocks and they wiped us out pretty good on the ones what we like to call teenage years and under it's very unpleasant but they are beautiful
Hey Ken! Thank you so much for your lovely comments and kind words for my video. I appreciate you stopping by to say hi and I hope you have a wonderful day too my friend :))
They're in KS right in my yard. They swoop down at people in nesting season. I'm ready for them to move, tired of them swooping down on my porch at my family. Scares the kids.
I live in southern Illinois. There are 5 maybe 6 that soar above my yard. I have a big bird bath that is usually full of many different species. They have stopped coming since the Kites appeared. I love all birds but these guys have really disputed things around here. 🤷
The range map you show at 1:52 is wrong, as I live in Gainesville, Florida, which is outside of the range indicated in that map, and Mississippi Kites are everywhere in season. Later in the video, at 4:28, you show a map that claims that the area of northern Florida where Gainesville is located is "range lost". That is a total lie. They never left (as far as I know) and are still here, in large numbers, in this allegedly "lost" territory. I see them every day from late April through autumn, and there is a local pair which nests near my house that roosts in a tree across the street daily in the late afternoon.
I was walking down the street last spring and saw one of these on the electrical wires. Having never seen one before, I took and pic (not great) and got the Conservation Department to confirm it. I live in the middle of a small city in the middle of MO - this is not a bird we normally see. Took me very much by surprise.
Oh wow that's awesome! I understand where you are coming from for sure, these birds like to be in urban areas so it can be weird seeing them on wires and other man made things for the first time. Glad you were able to see them though!

The thumbnail says kites but the video only shows some falcon. I came here to see kites. Kites. Not falcons. Kites.
The video is about a species of bird called the Mississippi Kite. The thumbnail and title clearly display that.
