Tesla founder Elon Musk took Jay Leno out for a spin in a prototype Cybertruck.
While they were out, there was an alpha battle where both men were trying to demonstrate higher social status than the other.
Jay's years of experience as a talk show host got him out to an early lead but Elon ended up pulling a great move on him at the end.
In this video, we'll analyze both of their social skills and talk about how they could improve.

Agreed, greenhouse IS the way you call the part of the car which has windows. That's how the call it in automotive design.

Why is this dude over analyzing this very simple conversation?
I watched the entire conversation before seeing this video, and my conclusion was that Jay was a skeptic from the start, but at the end he started to enjoy it especially after going through the "boring" tunnel.
Because he can fool some people into thinking he’s insightful and make some quick cash. And he probably has no other skills with which to make money.
Yeah Elon and jay really respect each other! Jay literally called Elon to personally order his model s. Both have unique personalities. Elon is a little awkward, while Jay is always the funny guy. I think that considering personality traits before analyzing is super important. Great video though!

Well that's not how it works with other alpha animals.
@@miguellopez3392 that IS the way it works with animals. The Alpha KNOWS it's on top, and does not need to prove it. It's the Beta or Gamma who sometimes makes a show of dominance displays when trying to take over the Alpha role. Then the Alpha replies only if the challenger is a credible threat. Otherwise the Alpha ignores the lower ranking animal's futile attempts.

@@Seb318 Yeah it is, known it almost all my life. Knew it from probably 7-8 years old. It refers to basically everything above the lower window sills. Generally used in the context of design, like shape of the greenhouse regarding aesthetics or visibility due greenhouse design.
"Greenhouse" is actually car-guy slang for the top of a car and is in no way derogatory.
A car with a nice greenhouse is a car with a good view that isn't obstructed by thick and heavy pillars that holds up the roof. A modern car with thin pillars is hard to achieve due to strict safety regulations.
So saying it has a nice greenhouse is like saying:
"I can see that you have put a lot of work into designing and engineering the top half of this automobile to give your customers and their passengers a great view while not compromising their and other drivers safety!"

Well, Elon is a nerd, first and foremost. Always has been. So he's gonna laugh at his own nerd joke in a nerdly fashion even when nobody is around. He told himself that joke in the shower and laughed just like that. Also, Jay really is high status when it comes to comedy and cars, so there's no shame in seeing if he laughed at your joke while he's driving your new car. That was sort of the point of bringing it to Jay, to see what he thought of it. The reality is simply two nice guys being nice, but the analysis implies ulterior motives, which I don't like.
Your'e reading too much into this. Leno uses his Tesla for everyday use so he likes and appreciates Teslas.
Describing the cyber truck roof as a greenhouse is descriptively accurate in a colourful way -he said that it was fabulous -which it is!
Talk about way over analysing a normal conversation 🤦🏻♂️. Leno has always seemed a fan of Tesla’s and obviously supports them to have them on his show. Leno seemed like his usual self
Leno says his favorite car to drive is the model s.... Of all his cars. He loves Elon and loves Tesla. They aren't enemies.
Leno might "Pooh-Pooh" because he is a traditional "Gear Head" and he feels a bit inferior to Musk... Elon sometimes does not realize his status and so he often adjusts himself in social interactions with various people. Both guys do not seem very relaxed in the video (like its a required set up to sell this vehicle). I think Elon is under business pressure these challenging days and in other recent videos as well as it has affected his natural Charisma.

Leno has had Elon and Teslas on his show for years. Back when Elon was just starting Tesla. The two of them are having a normal conversation. There is no beef between the two of them. It's basically a super nerd and a normal car guy talking about cars.

People make videos about anything nowadays. I actually found the interaction between the two quite friendly. Two of coolest guys on the planet talking about cars and enjoying a ride in the one of the most bad ass vehicles in existence.

I’m not so sure Jay was trying to out Alpha Elon Musk. Ball busting is often a huge sign of respect. People who respect each other can go back and forth without the pretense of good manners. Jay is laying up soft balls for hI’m. Each of the little jabs he makes are sort of sarcastically delivered, like they’re coming from the third person. If jay wanted to out alpha Elon, he’s clever enough to find an effective way of doing it without getting bit back

You're missing background, familiarity with types of people and context in this one.
1.) Jay saying drives like any other Tesla tells me the Cyber Truck is easily maneuverable to drive compared to other large Trucks.
2.) Green house is an automotive design term for the glass enclosure. Elon may have not known
3.)Jay has been a comedian since 1969. Comedians like banter and funny ideas & language. You can see that in Comedians Cars Getting Coffee Jay as the guest.
4.) This episode of CNBC's Jay's leno's Garage was filmed January 25,2020, before the Covid-19 shut down and before the Social unrest. The idea of standard feature of bullet proof vehicle that isn't specifically modified for that purpose seemed amusing & absurd at the time.
5.) This was an interview/ product review. Asking questions on unique features is warranted.
6.)Jay was 69 at the time with an in-dept knowledge of automobiles and manufactures. Failure is high for manufactures unless maintain certain patterns for instance planned obsolescence, Alfred P. Sloan. The Cyber Truck is in the Overton Window

This dude reminds me of those body language experts that shows bring on so they can look at a single picture of celebrities and painfully and obnoxiously over analyze it to death to make it seem like there is some huge secret meaning in every tiny detail and they have the skill and power to explain it all to you when in reality it’s all bullshit. This was just a conversation between two guys. End of story. Damn that was pretty perceptive of me, maybe I should start my own channel.

Greenhouse used in this context is not a derogatory term. Leno has just been around cars longer than Musk, me, and the creator of this video.
As much as I don’t like Jay Leno, I don’t agree that he was trying to undercut the Cybertruck’s amazing status. He was interviewing the way a host should.

Green house is not a derogatory comment, it is used by car designers and manufacturers all the time.
My question about the bullet proof glass would be what happens in a crash if it's laying on its roof and the doors are blocked or won't open for some reason? Or you end up landing in water and the electric door locks/electric windows stop working? Doesn't seem smart to have something that is going to make a quick rescue harder if not practically impossible.

nice video and breakdown. Inconsequential, but wanted it pointed out, if not done already. Correct me if incorrect, tesla truck uses exoskeleton design for structural integrity to passengers, unlike the cars Jay thinks of when car building. Might as well make bulletproof a marketing feature. Jay just experienced a production meeting with Elon. And Elon tried a joke on an old comic. :)

Jay Leno is a talk show host ! Elon is a genius
One must remember a couple of things about Leno. He's used to being an interviewer, the one asking the questions, the one who takes the lead or leads the direction of the conversation. Another point is that Elon invited Jay to drive this vehicle and give his opinion, so it is what it is. I'd think that Jay would be an expert especially with all the vehicles he has owned. Lastly, Jay is old school whereas Elon is one of the leaders in the future of cars. Extremely modernesk. This was a tug of war between them. I personally don't want to drive a vehicle that looks like a tank. I thought it was kind of ugly.

When will people realize that the breaking of the glass at the promo event was not an accident but deliberately planned so that the whole world knows that Tesla builds a new truck and it is supposed to have break resistant glass. Even people who don’t give a flying f about cars suddenly knew what was going on. THAT is the boss move that we should be talking about

If you think it was just a conversation. Realize both men knew this is televised so it’s not a conversation it’s an add. Body language and word choice go a LONG WAY in an advertisement so stop thinking this is some average convo when they are filming a video and are consciously watching their choice of words

I think it's fair to say - while it is interesting to study social behaviors - if you try to purposefully behave differently then your really trying to be someone that you're not. Elon handled himself like normal.

Good question. The goal is to be confident that you are always able to easily defend yourself against anyone at anytime, and be known as someone who shouldn't be talked down to or disrespected.
