  • One of the most beautiful and scenic railway lines in the world?
Join me for 'My Amazing Trip on Portugal's Beautiful Douro Valley Line (Porto to Pocinho)' as I journey alongside the river behind the fantastic Serie 1400 diesel locomotive in a rake of Schindler and Sorefame coaches. I'll show you some of the most amazing scenery in Europe and we'll take a walkthrough the train. We'll stop at some beautiful stations along the way and I'll tell you how to catch this train and how much it costs.
I really hope this video conveys some of the sights and sounds of the journey. It truly was one of the best railway journeys of my lifetime and if you ever find yourself in Porto, it's a must-do experience.
Please let me know what you think and do share your own stories if you've ever taken this trip yourself. As always guys, thanks for taking the time to tune in and have a watch - it takes a whole load of time to do these videos so any likes, comments and subs are much appreciated and makes it all worthwhile.
If you really like my work, maybe you could consider supporting the channel via my Ko-fi page on the link just below. There's loads of incentives and that would absolutely make my day.
Thanks again and cheers for now!

Hello Mark, 3 little things to add on. The commonly known “camel” (the train which was stopped at Marco de Canaveses) usually does the Regional trains from Marco to Régua and the InterRegionals from Régua to Porto. In Pocinho, the railway bridge you saw wasn’t the line to Barca d’Alva but the actually the old Sabor metric line to Duas Igrejas, very close to the enchanting and historic town of Miranda do Douro, which tops a hill between the tiny Fresno river and the Douro. If you ever go there, you’ll eat some of the best steak you ever had in your life, the famous Posta Mirandesa. Lastly, Pocinho is only a couple of kilometres away from the town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, which is known for having the ancient rock carving museum of the Côa valley. Great video, keep up ✌️

Hi Francisco, thanks for this, very detailed, reply. I love to get these responses as there's so much information in here that is useful not just for me but others thinking about doing the trip. I think there's so much more to do on and around this area I'm going to have to go back. the more responses I get to this video, the more I reckon I need to spend at least a week there trying to get around everything lol!!! I love steak so Miranda do Douro seems just right for me and I bet there's some great wines in the region to go with it. My first time in the area but it definitely won't be the last. Apologies for the oversight on the railway bridge, I can see where the line diverges now on Google Maps. I'll see if I can edit that bit and thanks for letting me know. Much appreciate your help and advice, all the best, Mark.

When I was a kid coming back home those doors were wonderful in the summer when it gets really hot, at that time I would open the dor and sit on the steps enjoying the summer breeze from the river and the views...

Great video Mark, and one that brings memories from a past where I would go by train from Lisbon to upwards of Regua to spend my summer holidays at my grandparents old house. The noise of the 1400 locomotive really reminds me of those times. We couldn't see it in your video but just after leaving the Regua station you go over a bridge crossing the river Corgo, there was a narrow gauge railway that used to run from regua and after that bridge turned left and continued on a slow trip up towards the city of Chaves, close to the Spanish border up north. With time they started closing sections, then the last part from Regua to Vila Real closed in 2009. There where 2 other narrow gauge railways that diverted from the Douro line, the Tamega line and the Tua line, all closed nowadays. Fortunately for us the CP administration in later years finally realized the potential of the douro line and recovered some old material to make those classic trains a reality. Now with the advent of elections and the uncertainty of what government comes next we will see if the plans continue foward to the recovery of material and lines or not. Hopefully yes, and we will see more trains like those and more people riding them.

Hi Jorge thanks. And thanks for this fascinating history as well - I heard from someone that Tua has some interesting railway memorabilia too. So much to give me an excuse to go back some day. Interestingly, I was in a restaurant in London last night and they had a bottle of Douro wine on the list - £38!! I didn’t try it, I’d rather fly back to Porto and drink it in the valley tbh. Another excuse to go back though 😊😊 All the best, Mark

you could board on very first train of the day at 7:20am in Porto - Campanhã, you would arrive to Pocinho between 10h40 and 11h am. Than you could explore the village, have a lunch at Tasquinha O Miradouro, board on 1:05 pm train and go to the Tua train station, get out of the train, see the old material from Tua's railway line, walk what remains from that line at Foz Tua, visit the two "Museums" near the station and board on train at 5h55 pm to Porto. It's what I always do anytime that I go there.
