This spectacular 1978 Suzuki RM125 Motocross Motorcycle was completely restored to show quality standards. Suzuki introduced the RM series of motocross models in 1975 which replaced the TM models. The range quickly stretched out from 50cc to 400cc and became very successful. A few years later the Full Floater swingarm was introduced and water-cooled engines came along in 1981. The development of the RM models continues even today. This example was purchased in October of 2014 by Robert Worthen who lives in Yukon, OK. At the time of purchase it was in good original condition which was documented with photos that are included. Robert’s intention was to restore the entire bike for vintage motocross racing. Robert ended up going in a different direction and the bike was stored for the next six years. In 2020, he made the commitment and started a comprehensive restoration. Over the next three years he spent countless hours methodically restoring every piece. During the restoration he used as many original and OEM parts as possible. It was completed in January of 2023 and was used as a display piece in his garage. It’s never run or had fuel in the tank since completion. It was purchased by MS CLASSIC CARS in April of 2024.
As the “C” code in the serial indicates this is a 1978 model. An aluminum swing arm was introduced for the 1978 model year. This example was completely disassembled down to a bare frame which was stripped and repainted in the correct shade of black. The original air-cooled 123cc single-cylinder 2-stroke engine was completely rebuilt to factory specifications. It was bored .1 over with a new Wiseco piston and ring. It’s equipped with Boyesen Reeds and a Mikuni Kogyo carburetor. The engine was factory rated with 26.5 horsepower and has a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine breathes through the original exhaust pipe and a custom made replica silencer.
The black handlebars and grips are correct style replacements. The levers and cables are OEM. The original front forks were rebuilt. The rear shocks were cleaned and painted. The original aluminum swing arm was cleaned and polished. It was outfitted with two new Takasago Excel rims with Buchanan spokes. The rims were wrapped with new Kenda Washougal II tires that are 80/100-21 on the front and 110/100-18 on the rear. The brakes were completely redone with OEM parts.
The original fuel tank was cleaned and polished. The front number plate, front fender, side panels and rear fender are NOS. From the information gathered, finding new old stock plastic for this model is very rare. The original seat was repacked and recovered with new material. It’s equipped with an OEM kick stand that was sourced from Australia.
Receipts and photos of the restoration will be included. Some miscellaneous parts and an original dealership brochure will be included. This is a wonderful example of a 46-year old vintage motocross motorcycle and will make a great addition to any collection. Don’t sleep on this one!
