  • The history of Portsmouth's Roman Catholic Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, includes its construction, bombing during World War II, and restoration:
    Construction
Construction of the cathedral began in 1879 and was completed in stages over the next 25 years:
1882: The nave was completed and the cathedral opened for worship
    1886: The crossing was completed
    1893: The chancel was completed
1906: The narthex and west porch were completed
1924: St Patrick's Chapel was completed
    World War II
The cathedral was badly damaged in a bombing raid on January 10, 1941:
The Bishop's House next door to the cathedral was destroyed
Most of the stained glass windows were damaged or destroyed, except for the rose window in the south transept
    Restoration
The cathedral was restored between 1945 and 1950:
The cathedral's interior has been re-ordered three times since the restoration, in 1970, 1982, and 2001
The cathedral's main structure was mostly unharmed, but the war damage was gradually repaired
    Architecture
The cathedral is in the 19th-century French Gothic style, with a curved apse and shallow transepts
    Statues
The cathedral has many statues, including St Peter, the Pieta, St Michael, St John, St Joseph, the Sacred Heart, St Edmund, Our Lady, and St Patrick
