HOW TO FIX: JEEP Wrangler/Chrysler/Dodge | Radio Cuts Off

- Опубликовано: 31 май 2021
- I had this issue where the RES 130 Radio had a problem in my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. It cut out in AUX and AM/FM didn't work at all. Didn't know what to do, but I came across YaBoyCai on RUclips showing his Jeep Patriot. I figured I'd record myself step by step to show this easy process, since it is slightly different on Jeep Wranglers.
This appears to be a common problem, so instead of going out to buy a new one or let the dealer take my money, I figured I'd give it a try myself! It didn't work at first, but paired with resetting the U-Connect did the trick!

**PLEASE READ** I want to be upfront and say in the end, this didn't hold up entirely for me as a couple of days later, we had a very hot day and it began to not work again. I think it was hot enough for it to come loose again. So I took it all apart again and placed a pen that I had cut in half as to just barely fit between the chip and the metal arm just above as to apply constant pressure to the chip. This has since fixed it entirely for me! Not only that, my FM/AM
When you say pen, do you mean like an ink pen?
I used a solid piece of wood, works great now. You saved me a few hundred bucks!
I've got the 2013 Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4 door and my radio doesn't have that little telephone button and squiggly line thing button, just an RND button and an info button. In place of the two you held for 30 seconds
Do you recommend not even doing the heating anymore, but just adding a material that will hold constant pressure? Or do both?
I did the same thing with a pencil (easier to cut) and it worked perfectly. Hopefully it holds up. Thanks so much for the vid. It helped a lot and saved me a bunch of $$$
I just tried this and it worked perfectly! My AM/FM radio stopped working completely and when i would connect to the Auxiliary the music would cut out every few seconds and then stopped working completely with a popping noise. Thank you SO much for this detailed video! You made everything so simple for me!
At this point I'm just buying a new stereo 😂 I don't have the patience for all that
For everyone's SA: I had this exact issue with my 2013 wrangler. Did the video fix, and it worked great for a few days. Did the southern engineering tip in the update, and that also worked for a few more days. When all was said and done, I took the radio apart and brought it to a cellphone repair store (or you can use any place that does micro-soldering). They fixed the chip for $25. Not a bad price, and it's worked perfectly ever since.
what exactly did they do the soldering together
I agree! I tried the video way first but it didn’t work. Then brought it to a cell phone repair shop and they resoldered the chip and that fixed it
Worked like a charm. Gave me a reason to buy a new heat gun. Thank you.
YES! After a year of a no radio in my van, this fixed it! Thank you so much for this. Holy shit, I can’t believe wedging a pencil in there is all I needed to do 🤣
Did this fix and it worked perfect, used a heat gun instead of a lighter and still worked fine, took the advice of the comment above and propped something in between the chip and the metal arm. perfect fix, thank you very much.
I did this and it worked. Hopefully the problem doesn’t come back. Thank you!
Awesome! I helped my daughter buy a used wrangler and we forgot to check the radio! Sure enough it was broken. This fixed it! I used a soldering iron to get a little bit more solder onto a couple of dry spots in the upper left corner and then a butane torch to reflow the solder all around.
Thank you especially for the encouragement with taking all the plastics off, including the vent detail. That was the hard part for us. It was all done within an hour!
2015 Wrangler JK. It's amazing that there are individuals on here that know how to make a repair to the radio like this.
I will mention that when I used my heat gun to heat the chip in question, I got it pretty darn hot with no ill effects to the Board. I don't recommend using a fireplace lighter w an open flame like I saw somewhere on here
If I would have taken my Jeep in to the dealer or car audio, they would have had a field day with me.
Thank you for the great tutorial.
Great fix to radio cutting out. A couple tips...Don't waste time removing air vents, they come out attached to the dash cover....Don't you a lighter to heat chip, use a hsir dryer on hot and hold down on chip while using the cool setting on dryer. Held down for one minute. I also did the heat and hold technique on the yellow transitor, just in case.
Just started happening on my 2017 Wrangler, here in 2024. Ridiculous. I'll be ripping out my radio this weekend and will be trying to fix it. Thanks to you and everyone else who have documented this fix.
2024-07-17 Jeeps Wrangler 2016... Thank you so much.
I just wanted to say Thank You for this video, and to let you know that even 2 years later it is still helping people out. This is one of those little inconveniences that just messes up your day until you get it fixed. Your knowledge and assistance on the issue has been critical to fixing this issue, and I am grateful that you took the time to pay it forward and show us how to fix it.
My radio has been cutting out for YEARS and finally tried to fix it thanks to this video!!! So far so good!! Thanks so much!
Worked like a charm. Step-by-step, easy instructions on how to do which is everything in the DIY world...and also explaining some of the potential curveballs and frustrations which helped to prep us ahead of time to be patient in new fixes like this. Well done and much appreciated. Being in St. Louis area, I know heat will make this a potential re-fix but at least I know some possible work-arounds now to make it more permanent.
So my Jeep just did the same thing over months time till no more sound from the radio. Saw this video, and 2 tries we fixed it. An hours time, or so is a lot better than a few hundred on a new radio . So than you.
I drive a dodge avenger 2013 and I can attest that this video helped me out a lot. I found this video long time ago and I didn’t know when I would have the time to fix my radio. I just want to thank you for saving me from boring car drives.
THANK YOU!!!!!!! BRO. This fixed my problem!!! I went 2 years without a working radio and I was looking on Amazon for a new replacement. I can’t believe THIS was all it took to fix my radio…. 25/10 man.. thank you. VERY MUCH!!!
Had same problem with my 2011 Jeep Wrangler. Did exactly what he said and I fixed it myself! Thanks saved me money!
Just made this repair to my 2014 Jeep Wrangler radio this past weekend. Worked perfectly! My AM/FM stopped working a few months ago and then last week, the radio sound would go on and off every few seconds. This repair fixed both issues! Thanks for the video!! Recommend using a heat gun, not an open flame.
I’ve been searching for months, trying to figure out how to fix my 2015 dodge grand caravan radio, exactly like this one, Uconnect 130, and this is the only video that has had the exact same problem with the same style radio. THANK YOU
Thank You so MUCH!!!! Absolutely perfect instructions. Was in and out in under an hour. Used the lighter and worked perfectly.
If it craps out I know how to fix it again. Took all of the scary stuff out !!!! Thanks again!
Okay...I was skeptical...but WOW! It worked for me! Thank you for the step by step detailed directions. Walked me through the process with success. Went ahead and added the brace for constant pressure. Crossing fingers it stays this way.
Dude! First off.... Great video! Very good on the step by step! Couldn't ask for anything easier! Second... Fixing the radio... You were right on. Ended up using a bamboo stick to hold down chip! Dude... Thank you! Saved my marriage! Joking! But you satisfied my wife! You lucky dog! She's very happy now.
Now when you say he satisfied your wife......
This was a GREAT find. I started a search to buy a replacement and found this video, My radio is working again! Thank You
I just did this and it worked! It’s still cold out so I’ll be fine. We will see what happens in the summer. Thank you so much for this video!
I have Grand Caravan 2015, I had the exact same issue, I followed all the steps, I had to do the process 3 times until it worked. Thank you very much!
This worked on my 2017 Willy's. Appreciate the upload.
Yes!!!!! Exactly my issue. I looked through many forum posts but nothing was quiet it. Taking it out and heating to stick it back in place fixed it. I also had to reset it after putting it back in. So happy it’s working again 🙌🙌🙌🙌 thank you haha
Thank you so much for this candle lighter suggestion. I tried the hairdryer + foil cone that commenter on another one of these videos suggested but that didn't work. I really didn't want to buy a soldering tool - the candle lighter worked like a charm after a couple tries. Here's hoping it stays fixed!
Your a lifesaver. My stereo was driving me nuts before I found this video.
Thanks to you and YaBoyCai who you mentioned in the video. I have 2015 Wrangler so made it straightforward get to radio and then out. Not really difficult either. Between the 2 videos, fix worked perfectly so far....I didn't want to invest in heat gun which I'm sure is best method but figured and after testing, realized that unfortunately lighter probably doesnt get area hot enough. Decided to use hair dryer and made a "funnel" extension about 6" long ro about 1" round diameter on end of it with wrapped tape to get nice intermittent hot spot directly at location while pressing down with the chopstick. Worked for me. Hope this helps also, thanks.
HUGE help, thank you! I went that extra step and placed a cut-off pencil for added pressure. Works like a charm!!
Worked exactly like you guy's said.... Just be cool with the flame or heat gun....After that, plugged the head unit back up just to check before putting everything back and it worked as said! THANKS AGAIN 👍!!!!
Thank you!!
This was my exact issue. I fully appreciate how you went through every step methodically and mater of fact. You saved me hundreds.
So beyond pumped this fixed my jeep patriot radio! I used a heat gun and a popsicle stick to push the chip down.
I had this same issue, I was able to fix it thanks to your video. I live in Texas so will definitely keep an eye on it when we have hot summer. But I seen your comment about having constant pressure so I will keep that in mind. With the cooler fall/winter weather I think it will be okay until next summer. Thank you for this information.
100% was the issue. Used and filed down a piece of a clothes line clip, the wooden one, to wedge under that metal bracket to press it down. Worked first time. Should hold up just fine.
Great advice.. repaired once....found large pot- hole jarred loose...again gonna try this weekend. Again thx
This was very helpful. Would not have been able to DIY it without this video.
Hopefully it stays fixed!
FIXED. THANK YOU!!
Secured mine with a wooden clothes pin I cut down to size and wedged in.
I tried this today. I couldn't believe it worked. Radio, cd player, and auxiliary port for my phone all work again. My sound was going in and out and then finally quit all together. Working 10:48 great now.
Worked! Thanks! First try. Used a heat gun carefully to heat the chip area while pressing it down evenly with a wooden skewer. Then cut that skewer and wedged it between the chip and the metal bracket directly above it with pressure fit only. I didn’t glue it to the chip for fear of damaging the chip with super glue. Not only did the on/off sound problem go away but now the radio AM/FM works which never worked. 2012 Jeep Wrangler. Pretty easy fix. About 2 hours taking my time. Dash come apart easily like shown. I only had to remove one air vent. The one right of the window controls was all I removed.
Took me 4 lighter tries, but it's working for now on my 2015 Wrangler. Thank you! I haven't had a radio for a few years. It's a little crackly when I pause Bluetooth audio, but it's better than nothing! Hardest part is removing the vents. If they don't turn easily, you're not pressing the tab right. Seems like you may not need remove them. Thanks you!
Thank you very much! I use a pencil with the eraser pressing on the chip now the radio CD speakers work just beautiful! Thank you again God bless!
Another one fixed! Even went as far as using the pen barrel to wedge the chip down so it doesn’t come lose. Good stuff man, thanks.
How did you do that can you show me?
Thanks!! This fix worked great and saved $$$
Did the lighter trick, used hot glue and a wooden dowel cut to size to hold the chip in place. Didnt have to do the reset. All workes good.
** note for 2014 JKU** turn the vents to 1 o'clock not 12 (strait up) use a flashlight until you see the hole open up, takes very little pressure.
Worked, great video! Added the small piece to keep it held down, as others suggested. Can also confirm no need to remove vents, they come out with the rest of the panel
Thanks for the great video, easy to follow instructions. You’re a lifesaver, much appreciated!! 👍🏼
"It feels like you're breaking everything. But'cha not." 😂 Seriously, thanks for the helpful video as my 2016 Compass has started doing this. Thanks for the ASMR vibes as well👍.
Worked great for me! Thanks a ton! Have to test it in the heat still but it's better than it was and significantly cheaper!
Appreciate it man! Just fixed mine! Did the pen trick and it works brand new now wasn’t gonna waste money on a new radio yet upgraded to much to get to the radio yet lol 🤞🏾🙌🏾
Thanks man for the video. Worked on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler radio. I ended up doing the tip listed in the comments of putting a piece of plastic from a writing pen on the plate and under the steel lip things. Just sawed off the right length. Again, thanks for the video.
An important item to be aware of. If you closely observe, the little "latch" to unlock the vent is just right of the "p" in "Jeep". You need to line up the louver hole to be just right of the "p" to find the latch to pull down on. (see video about 2:35, where he is prying on the latch. You will notice that is it just right of the "p".)
Thanks for posting the fix with the pen. I've never told a youtuber this until now... but I love you! lol
That’s awesome! Glad it helped you out… love you too 😂
Thank you - this fix worked for me. You actually only need to pop one of the central air vents to remove the window controls. I also got glued a dowel to the chip.
Wow ! I was skeptical but this actually worked AND I haven’t had AM or FM for 3 years ! I have paid for satellite because that still worked but WOW ! Thanks
Well I was super doubtful but I followed the instructions and BLAM my friggn stereo works . Thank You sooooo much . This works definitely try it !!!
Thanks for the video I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 which has the same Bluetooth player your jeep had but to make story short it work for my Chrysler but couldn't have did it without your video.
Thank you very much for this video so far it's working great 👍 I have tried many things and was about to throw the radio out the window 🤣 thank you again
Thank you! This worked and was easy enough for someone like me to do it.
thanks for this , i literally just put something there to pressure it down and it worked , thanks for your video !
Great find, thanks for sharing. Was able to fix my radio issue. I post a cut to length a wooden chopstick secured against the screw bracket as a added measure to hold the chip in place. Wish I could post a pic.
That was cool to actually fix something!
Thanks…that helped out a lot…step by step was in point
Worked for me ,took a heat gun on the chip and heat it pretty good.thank you for the post !
Awesome, thanks for sharing. Glad it worked for you!
Thanks my ‘15 wrangler just started doing this!
Friggin amazing. With the video i had it fixed in 45 minutes
Holy sh**, thanks for the video. It was extremely helpful in getting the dash apart. Used a micro tip butane lighter and heated up the chip, then used a cut down cap to a pen to hold the chip down pressuring off of the metal tab above. Seems to have solved the exact issue that you had. Thanks again…..BRILLIANT!!!
It worked!! Thanks for posting the pen tip!!
Worked like a charm! well done 👍
With this problem going on for years and years and Chrysler charging people probably $1000+ to replace their radio, there should be a recall or class action suit over this.
It's ridiculous that they make same mistake for so long without accountability .
They should have soldered it to begin with instead of glue, if that's what it is, Or put a heatsink on it to prevent overheating.
It must have been designed by the same guy that did the XBOX.
Thank you for the video. Works great so far.
Thank You It worked on my 2012 Chrysler 200
Thanks for the video this helped soo much thanks for saving me money. This fixed my problem.
This is some crazy voodoo magic and I LOVE IT!! Legit saved me $500
Thanks sir I fix my 2016 jeep wrangler radio whit your video
Totally worked for me. For anyone who gets the antitheft code...if you unplug the cd and power on the deck it enables the radio.... then plug the deck in again and the antitheft will have cleared
You’re a savior my man! Great video
Great Video! Thank you for doing this!
So I did this and surprisingly it worked when reinstalled radio but only for about 30 seconds, when I pulled radio back out it started working again so I played with the wires and found that the smaller antenna wire had a short so I zip tied the two antenna wires together and now it works fine, hope that helps
Thx for the vid, I’m going to try for my 2014 challenger. Same issue with the cut out and pops.
2017 wrangler here. Same issue. Why is this problem so common? That's so much work to fix an issue that seems to span several years from the factory. Seems we're better off just looking for an after market radio
Thank you. 2014 grand caravan totally fixed it
I just had the same issue with my 2013 avenger. You dont even have to heat it up. I just cut a pen almost in half and wedged it in using the bracket lip right above it. Works fine. Used it on the one i got from the scrapyard as well and it works just fine as well.
might call this a success. My AM/FM went out months ago and just recently the xm and bluetooth started 2 seconds on, pop, 2 seconds off. . I figured nothing to lose, took it apart, heated it and had success for almost 1 minute. Then I read the comments about the pen, tried that and now I have xm with no problem and the am FM will work after playing xm for a minute or so. Not perfect but better than what I had and no need to buy a replacement yet. Thank you.
Yo this brings hope!! Thanx dude!!!!! 👍🏿
Glad to hear that man, thanks for watching! I hope this works for you. With that said, I wanna be upfront and say this didn't hold up entirely for me as a couple of days later, we had a very hot day and it began to not work again. I think it was hot enough for it to come loose again. So I took it all apart again and placed a half cut pen that just barely fit between the chip and the metal arm just above as to apply pressure to the chip. This has since fixed it entirely for me!
As much as I wanted this to work, my yellow connecting on the motherboard broke off…..and now it’s doing it constantly :(. Thank you though for trying!
Thanks for the help!
This worked for me! And I had a 2012 Jeep livery…Thank you so much!
Thank you so much man I appreciate
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for the information
I messed it up the first time so I threw some solder weld on it then it worked like a charm lol *Update* It started messing up again
Is there some type of glue / adhesive that could be used to hold the chip in place that is safe for electronics / conducts electricity?
Gonna have to try it
Just started doing this in my 2017 Jeep Patriot
I just did my jeep radio .i can't believe how easy it was ,let's see how long it lasts
Question: I have a 2001 pt cruiser. recently they put in a new radiator. I assume that they had to remove the car battery. When I came home, noticed that the radio has no power.what should I check first? I am not that much mechanically inclined. Thanks for your responses.
