    Nine is to this day my favourite Doctor. Harsh, brutally honest, condescending to humanity's greed and closemindedness, critically thinking and excited at little tibits of good in the universe. I was sad to see him go.

      I think 12/Capaldi mirrors some of the same bluntness and honesty with some serious tones but also trying to play off bits as jokes and being written to sometimes diffuse it too much saturated some of that. Though I did also like 12's style

    The End of the World is a prime example of why Rose is my favorite companion. She is so human. I love her reaction to watching the world end. I love when she talks to that one blue lady and asks her what her name is. It sets her up as a character who asks questions, is curious, and naive. She's a 19 year old who just realizes she has no clue what she's gotten herself into, traveling with an alien she knows nothing about. This decision changes her whole life and the lives of people close to her. It determines who she will become as a person. Unlike other some other companions, she starts off as someone who is not really suited to be the Doctor's companion. She makes dumb decisions, she isn't brave, she's not clever, she's not funny, she's not someone the Doctor looks at and would think, "This would be good time travel material." Not like Madame DePompadore or Lady Christina, or someone who wants to go "see the stars." And somehow I don't think she's annoying. She is Good Natured. She changes throughout the series.

      @@_somerandomguyontheinternet_ I guess you're right, she does bravely save the day in the first episode. And she does take plenty of risks. I get the impression that she doesn't initially think she is capable of doing much and then realizes she's brave throughout the series. Another reason I love Rose is because of how injustice bothers her enough to take action. Not to say that other companions don't but with Rose I think it's displayed rather well. Her caring about stuff makes the viewer care. I think she was very intentionally written to guide a new viewer to Doctor Who and really shows what the whole thing is about.

    I really liked this episode. It was campy, dark at some moments and optimistic. It was interesting to see the most human of the future people being the most inhuman of the bunch, with Rose realising how Cassandra isn't the last human but only perceives herself to be. It has nice parallels with New Earth.
    I will say, looking back, Rose went through the whole Time Travel package in season 1. She sees the past, the end of the world, her planet almost nuke itself because of Aliens wanting to get rich quick, the Daleks, someone trying to profit off the future, humanity in a game show dystopia and those gas mask zombies.
    However, for me, the episode that sets Rose apart from other companions is Father's Day

    This is the episode that blew the majority of the effects budget of season 1, and resulted in settings and sets being very limited for the rest of the season. @@10thdoctor15 It's definitely true that in seasons 1, 2 and 3, the halfway-ish episode is an episode that will be crucial to setting up the finale. "The Long Game" is the setup for "Bad Wolf" / "The Parting of the Ways". The Cybermen two-parter is the setup for "Doomsday". And "The Lazarus Experiment" is crucial to the "Vote Saxon" arc.

    I always saw the doctor taking Rose there for her first trip, as kind of a trial by fire. Basically just throwing her in at the deep end and seeing if she will swim. Meaning he purposefully ignores some of her discomfort in the beginning, wanting her to work through it on her own.
    I think he thought she would disappoint him and he has a kind of "better to find out now" attitude about it. But in the end she rises to the challenge.
    That is why he is so closed off, when she asks about him earlier, but volunteers the information at the end. He has faith that she can handle it, that she won't quit and leave him to be alone once again.
    Ultimately, either interpretation is probably valid. I like that there is enough ambiguity for everyone to have their own interpretation.

    Nine has always been my favourite Doctor - Eccleston was perfect for the role. I both wish he'd stuck around for longer and understand why it wouldn't have worked anywhere near as well if he had. Have you considered eventually doing a video on regenerations and why they happen when they do in terms of story/pacing/character relationships/etc.?

    • @papajohn365
      @papajohn365 4 года назад +3

      Tom Baker was always my favorite until Christopher Eccleston. I think he played the part exceptionally well. Most will favor David Tennant or Matt Smith on new Who, but I think they are mistaking flashiness for composition. Eccleston played with fervor and fury, and had the mix needed for an emotionally wounded Timelord. He also channeled his predecessors very well. So disappointing he only agreed to one season. I don't think the show would have ever made a comeback if it had been anyone else. Tennant was too brooding and Smith was too campy.

    The episode that secured Modern Who, was dalek for many. Although Rose, end of the world, Ghosts and the Slitheen episode were good but doesn't hit all the beats. It was Dalek that implied to long term critical fans e.g Chibbers that this is Doctor Who and you better get used to it

    • @CashelOConnolly

      THE LAST TIMELORD did you write the Slitheen was good? WOW it’s constantly in the worst Dr Who episodes lists. In my opinion it’s garbage but as long as you enjoy it then my opinion doesn’t matter. We all like different things,I mean I can’t stand Matt Smith’s Doctor but really like Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. I prefer Eccleston as the Doctor than Tennents Doctor. Not popular views but I don’t care and you shouldn’t care that everyone thinks the Slitheen is dog sh*t. Peace ❤️❤️

    • @BambiTrout
      @BambiTrout 3 года назад +2

      @@CashelOConnolly I think people are overly critical of the Slitheen two-parter, and also tend to conflate the overtly ridiculous monster with the episodes themselves.
      The Slitheen are intentionally, comically bad, with the farting and childish humour being the key issues. However, they are actually pretty well realised from an effects perspective, and they provide an interesting send-up of the B-movie tendencies of the classic series, while also being the Doctor Who variant of the amoral profiteer variety of aliens à la Star Trek's Ferengi.
      The episodes themselves also offer the first real negative commentary on how travelling with The Doctor affects those left behind - a key feature of Davies' tenure. It re-grounds the series and Rose herself, and shows how she has changed, even just over the course of 3 episodes. Also, as the first two-parter of NuWho, it does a great job of maintaining the tension between episodes.
      From a more meta perspective, the episodes are also pivotal to later developments in the series. The obvious examples are the characters of Margaret Blaine and the amazing Harriet Jones (Flydale North) who are key to Boom Town and The Christmas Invasion respectively. Also, the time-jump majorly affects Rose and Mickey's relationship, Jackie discovers the truth, and we get a brief introduction to Tosh - who obviously became a central character in Torchwood.
      On a surface level the episodes are somewhat ridiculous, but they actually are incredibly important, and the levity they provide is a nice breather before the intensely serious Dalek. Boom Town provides a similar breath between the creepy, horror of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and the titanic Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. It is a technique that is used extensively in shows like Doctor Who, with Buffy being a key example, and it allows the finale to pack more of a punch when it goes dark. By having a hard-hitting, pivotal episode preceded by something lighter with lower stakes and more jokes, the contrast makes everything feel more visceral and impactful.
      Basically, these episodes might not be the pinnacle of high-brow Doctor Who à la Blink or Heaven Sent, but they are important to both character and story, and allow other episodes to shine that much brighter. Also, there are PLENTY of other episodes that are written far worse and that I enjoy FAR less than the Slitheen ones.

      I have convinced multiple people to watch Doctor Who, and told them, stick around until the episode called Dalek arrives, and even the doubters after that episode become fans. It solidifies Rose as a companion, fully helps new viewers to recognize the history of the Doctor that exists and how it has shaped who he is, and a bunch of other things.

The first episode didn't grab me as much and where I was expecting aliens I got freaky mannequins. This episode actually gave us aliens and I was so glad. I started watching Doctor Who in 2016 so I was watching long after New Who had started. Has anyone seen the music video with Christopher Eccleston? The whole thing is just him making different facial expressions and it's beautiful. It should be cheesy but my god is Christopher a great actor. I know there were issues within the production but really wish we got more of his doctor.

      I'm a Capaldi fan, and Eleventh Hour is perfect, so I can't grumble with your top 4 :) I'd personally place Rose 5th, and New Earth is my least favourite opener, but they're all pretty darned good episodes, in fairness.

    • @daybreakrebornedits
      @daybreakrebornedits 4 года назад +1

      @@ftumschk two critical components of how I judge episodes of DW in general is the story and the villain. The Eleventh Hour had the best setup, package and presentation, but it suffers from the most bland villains. The Magician's Apprentice, The Pilot and Deep Breath have far more interesting and intimidating antagonistic presences, which is why they're so high up.

    MY OWN THOUGHTS ON THIS SUBJECT THAT GIVES ME IDEAS FOR FUTURE SPINOFF SHOW SERIES:
    First off, I agree that the First Season of (DOCTOR WHO) was a fantastic success, and it was so super great that it is responsible for the spark of the new version of DoctorWho, and to add I wish that similar type of themes were in the 11th. & 12th. Seasons of it, and so key word not exactly the same but only similar.
    Anyway I strongly feel that if, and when a spinoff show series might get made someday; Than it should include a few somewhat similar situations, and scenarios within the stories episodes of the First Season of it.

    The 9th was a great Doctor, too bad he doesn't stay long enough to face The Master, I will do the Sleeteen 2 part into 1 and trade it for a 9th Who episode in other planet, or face the Master, he was a better match than The 10th

    Actually, I didn't read the music as comedy. I was just re-watching the series, and when they started playing the music, I actually got this weird feeling. I mean, music that I remember from the recent past, being played in this alien place, as old alien music, gave me a really really weird sort of sadness. idk

    I didn't even realize that the Time War and the Doctor being the last of his kind was only established in the new Doctor Who; it seemed like such a fundamental aspect of the character and story, that I just assumed it was always there.
    I hate that they kinda backtracked on that later, and even reversed the decision to have The Doctor kill his own people along with the Daleks in the Time War. And don't even get me started on the retcon of series 11 and 12.
