Honestly, I think how you respond to this episode sort of depends on the kind of childhood you experienced, especially if you first saw this episode as a child. I've seen a large amount of defence for this episode (including mine) come from a place of actually being able to seriously relate to Chloe, whether that's from the domestic abuse angle - and I've genuinely heard multiple very compelling reasons for why the "red light" form of Chloe's dad-drawing is actually better than seeing anything more of it from people who reason that it allowed them to project the image of their own abusive relative/guardian onto it and thus the episode acted as a catharsis for them moreso than if the dad-drawing had been 100% identifiable - or whether, like me, it's from the angle of feeling intensely lonely as a child and unable for whatever reason to fully communicate with family.
Even looking back on it now as an adult and therefore no longer the target audience, I can't even really say that it's *bad* (especially to the extent of being hateable), especially when you take into consideration how uneven S2 was as a whole in terms of quality. I can't help but feel those who hate it merely hate it for not being whatever they wanted it to be, not because they're judging it for what it actually is. At worst, it's a relatively forgettable filler episode that's overshadowed by the finale.

Pretty much every kid loves to imagine strange and wondrous worlds to play in, but to actually be able to make them real?

I liked the first half, which was more of a mystery to find out what was happening. The suspense was good and I wish they had kept the same tone throughout and made it more of a murder mystery. The second part just ends up being so chessy. While the doctor running with the olympic torch is a cool moment, it just feels over the top. I wish they had restricted the episode to just one lane/gated society and made it more of detective one, with the adults being the red-herrings.

I’ve always loved this Story, ever since I was a child. It was so out there and different to all the other Stories I had seen at that point. LOVE the creepy Soundtrack to this Episode and I really enjoy Ten and Rose. I always found the abuse storyline scary and sad, and the closet drawing use to terrify me. And yeah, the setting is absolutely gorgeous. David and Billie just seem like they had a blast filming this. One of my favourite scenes is when he slightly opens up to Rose and tells her he was a Dad once, but then he just brushes it off. It reminds me of what Donna says to Ten in The Doctor’s Daughter, about how he talks but never says anything. I think the Isolas is a beautiful creature and concept, even the name is beautiful. I like the subtle foreshadowing of the Finale as the Torchwood Tower looms in the distance of the shot of the Stadium.

Steven Moffat handled delicate issues like abuse horribly. The River Song / Melody Pond thing is offensively bad, with little respect shown for Amy's trauma and with River's mental health issues actively mocked by the Doctor within minutes of meeting her. This despite him knowing she's been the victim of kidnap and brainwashing. Yet Moffat writes Eleven as more interested in flirting with her than actually helping her. It's all so, so bad.
This episode might have been a bit kids TV, it's true, but at least it didn't introduce an issue like domestic abuse only to drop it without properly addressing it. The climax of the episode is cheaply made and a bit cringe, with the monster dad drawing, red lighting and shaky cam effects. But the pain these characters were feeling was respected, and some effort was made to properly resolve their issues.
I hated Steven Moffat's method of emotionally scarring his characters and then jumping forward six months to have them back to their old selves, with the implication that all their healing and recovery had happened off screen.
Imagine if he hadn't done that. Imagine if Amy's time as a ganger had left her experiencing episodes of depersonalisation, occasionally disassociating from herself and being unable to trust that what she experiences is real. Imagine that being folded into and addressed in a sci-fi plot. Imagine if Rory's attempt to suppress two thousand years of memories and two separate timelines began to seriously effect his memory, and he had to make the choice to give up that past or lose his present. Imagine if we actually saw River spend some time in a space mental health facility, and got to see her own journey mirrored in that of other characters. Something like the Minotaur hotel episode, but where the supporting characters she meets represent the various paths River herself could go down as she attempts to reconcile her trauma at the hands of Kovarian. Will she become vindictive, give in to fear, strive for a "normal" life, or - oh, wait, here comes the Doctor to face off against villain of the week and show her that maybe there's another way, which is to be just a little bit mad and a little bit dangerous, but always keep your heart in the right place. Think of the plots we could have had if Moffat had let character drive story instead of the other way round.
Moffat has a lot of strengths as a writer but character isn't one, and writing realistic, respectful responses to trauma *really* isn't his forte.

    • @frances7575
      @frances7575 4 года назад +3

Okay, I've never actually commented on yt in my life, but this resonated with me so much I felt I had to say something. Honestly, this situation didn't really hit me until season 6, when Amy's actual newborn daughter was kidnapped and she just kind of goes with it? Like I know Amy knows she grows up to be River but she only asks the Doctor if he's found Melody once and then just kind of leaves it. Like I'm no mother but I've seen mothers' connections with their kids (especially newborns) and I know that most mothers wouldn't eat or sleep or breathe until their child was safe with them. That heart-wrenching scream when Amy loses Melody had me feel like Amy was that kind of mother, but Moffat drops it like he dropped the rest of his character arcs (not to mention Clara's being torn into a thousand versions of herself/the leaf thing/her dead mum, none of which ever get mentioned again??). I'm a huge Moffat fan but yeah, this stuff ruins it for me a little.

@@frances7575 I know. All these years later, it still annoys me!
The Melody thing was just mishandled on so many levels, it pains me. The worst part about is that it was obvious where the plot was going from the moment "pregnant Amy" was revealed, and by that stage I'd learned to be a bit wary of how Moffat would handle a plot like that. The loss of Amy's bodily autonomy, the guilt Rory would feel at not having known it wasn't her, and the sense of betrayal they would both feel towards the Doctor, for harbouring his suspicions in secret for so long . . . I was annoyed enough to see those issues ignored in AGMGTW. But I was given hope by Amy's tender moments with her baby, and River's quiet devastation when she realizes she has to refuse Rory her help and can't tell him why. But even in that moment I remember being annoyed that a moment between River and her father had suddenly becoming all about the Doctor soaring and falling and blah blah * insert trailer voiceover speech here *. And then Let's Kill Hitler came along and as you say, Rory and Amy sounded like they were wondering if the Doctor had found their lost car keys yet. Not living their whole lives on hold waiting to find out what happened to their baby daughter. Not desperate to change history and get her back whatever River says about it. Not jumpy or angry or struggling to trust the Doctor. They're just . . . living their lives, coming up with elaborate pranks to get the Doctor's attention, and occasionally looking a bit worried. It doesn't ring true emotionally, at all, and I can't imagine how insulting that would be to watch if you were a parent who had lost a child.
It really did feel like Moffat bit off more than he could chew. He put the wheels of this plot in motion and then thought, "Oh god, now I'm going to have to have my characters permanently altered by this, though. I'm going to have to get all bogged down in their ~feelings~ and sacrifice some of the fun for heavy emotional stuff. Nah, I'll just sidestep it instead."
Honestly he just shouldn't have headed in that direction in the first place if he wasn't willing to follow through.

Personally I’ve always loved this episode. It’s such a fun and wildly imaginative story, with some genuinely great moments with the scribble monster and the Doctor carrying the Olympic Torch.
Also: I would actually argue that Shayne Ward is still relevant. He’s just not really known for his singing anymore. He’s known more for his acting now; he had a very high profile reoccurring role in Corrie as Aidan Connor for instance, and he also starred in a West End production of Rock of Ages. One thing that always baffles me that the isolus is abducting people because it is lonely, and is confused when the victims are not happy so abducts more people (assuming that it is because they are now lonely too), yet when it decides to snatch the Doctor and the TARDIS this is purely out of malice, because he is a threat to its plan. For a monster that is motivated by love, even if it is misguided in that regard, this is an action that is completely out of character. That’s the action of an out and out evil monster, not a morally ambiguous one. If they had played it differently it might work better (have the isolus snatch the Doctor because he is so wonderful that it wants him to be his friend forever and appear happy when confronted about it).
The ultimate problem is that the child acting in one toned. As the alien she is either angry or bored. There is no attempt at any nuance to the character. The opening has her humming a song, if they had continued that, with some childish glee, it might have been creepier.

This episode has a lot of parallels to "The Idiot''s Lantern":
Both have a major event about to take place that everyone is talking about and which is fairly huge for London. Not only do both episodes have this as a backdrop but both feature preparing for this event and watching it on television.
Both episodes take place on a quiet suburban street. In fact, both episodes have characters describing the neighborhood as nice and quiet with families living there up until things started going wrong. This wouldn't be super significant except that the Rose seasons often featured places like the council estate that Rose grew up in when it's not taking place in Cardiff or central London.
Both episodes' mysteries are about people disappearing, and there is some contention among family members and neighbors about how that mystery should be addressed.
Both involve most time spent in one household. Whether it's the Webbers or the Connellys.
Both involve stealing someone or a part of someone. This comes to a head in each episode when one or the other member of the TARDIS team is taken: Rose's face in "The Idiot's Lantern", and the Doctor in "Fear Her". (Perhaps not coincidentally, these two episodes were actually shot in the same production block, which came right after filming the "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday" two parter, and before "The Impossible Planet" / "The Satan Pit". So maybe this worked out nicely, as the writers could write the Doctor out of part of "Fear Her" so David Tennant could film his extra "Idiot's Lantern" scenes, whilst Billie Piper used this time to film her solo scenes for "Fear Her". This does give some context as to the behind the scenes that played a part)

I didn't even know people hate this episode tbh, I've always liked it.
I find the concept of drawings coming to (or snatching) life super interesting and loved how it was used here, with the plan being to make earth itself disappear. It demonstrates how powerful this ability can be, used in the wrong way.
My liking of "Fear Her" might be partly because I'm an artist myself but I don't think the episode's objectively bad. It has a unique concept, explored in an interesting way. Besides, bad child acting often doesn't bother me as much so I don't think of this part as negatively.
Another reason for me liking this episode is the Doctor picking up the torch near the end. Idk why, but I loved this scene so much when I first watched this episode. Combined with the commentator of the Olympics, it just sent such a hopeful message that I can't say I dislike it.
All in all, I don't really get why people seem to hate this episode as much as they do
