Because this is the perfect weather to talk about a Christmas Special!
yes
To be fair, they film the Christmas specials in the height of Summer, don't they? Or, at least, they used to!
Besides, Christmas is less than 5 months away, so it's pretty close!
@@megansmith1993 If I remember correctly, The Runaway Bride was filmed during a spell of particularly hot Summer weather.
Megan Smith yeah, now they film specials as part of the Series.
Also, it’s been over a year and people are still mad at moving the special airing down a week.
Well it is if you're Australian ;)
The subtle reference to the master in this episode always excites me
What subtle reference? I missed it (unless it was “Mr Saxon says fire” with the tank and the Webstar)
@@astra3310 yup that’s it
Drinking game for this episode:
Every time Donna slaps the Doctor
Every time Donna mentions "Nerys"
Drink continuously whenever the Racnoss is onscreen because she is just so utterly cringe
What about when she says im in my wedding dress
@@Venemofthe888 Oh yeah, a finger for ever mention of "pockets"
What’s even better is how as they made the Racnoss Empress model the studio got invaded by tons of small red spiders
Do it with a friend so they can tell you when to stop.
Donna will always be one of my favorite companions. She wasn’t love sick over the Doctor like Rose and Martha were. She was just his best friend and there dynamic was perfect. Catherine Tate and David Tennant worked so well together and I am glad Catherine was brought back for series 4 and not forgotten about like so many characters are.
Great video. I am excited for you to move on to series 3 and for you to talk about one of the most underrated companions: Martha Jones.
She was only brought back because we all loved her so much lol!
I just wanna mate 😂
Agree,best companion ever
I also love that with Donna we get a character growth we don't see in other companions. Don't get me wrong, the companions leave a different person than when they first joined the Doctor, but Donna.....out of all the companions, Donna needed her time with the Doctor the most. This show is evil lmfao
Also the source of a classic meme, "David Tennant in Places He Shouldn't Be"
Loved when Graham Norton showed that. David’s reactions were great
7:23 It must be very crowded towards the core of the Earth: There's the original Racnoss ship, the Silurian hibernation cities further up and the Blessing from Miracle Day at least.
You forgot the Primords, and just how far down do the Silence tunnels go anyway?
@@rmidthun thanks.
I thought the Silurian stuff was in the mantle rather than the core. Which is 1800 miles thick.
@@martinmaguire-music6692 well I honestly have no idea, I was just listing stuff that went significantly far underground.
I remember seeing a graphic someone did of all the stuff hidden beneath earth’s surface in Doctor Who. Unfortunately I can’t find it
Rose did not have a culture shock bruh she was sad about Ricky, i mean Mickey
She was also overwhelmed by the sight of pall of the other life she had never known existed
It's really amazing how much David Tennant and Catherine Tate had chemistry from the start. They really hit lightning in a bottle there.
It’s really no surprise that they are the duo for the 60th, I just love them
Always loved how donna initially turned down the doctors offer and then we meet her again later on, when she decides that she made the wrong decision
From the many Dr Who channels on RUclips, your content is always so well presented. Thanks for putting these videos together.
Rest In Peace Christmas specials 😔
Hello, unreliable New Years Day specials!
My favourite Xmas Specials are Voyage of the Damned. The Next Doctor. End of Time - Part 2 . Last Christmas. Husbands of River Song and Twice Upon a Time.
They will be missed
May they sleep in heavenly peace.
There's a Christmas spacial coming out this year lol.
I think the chase scene on the motorway is hilarious with those 2 kids looking out their car window cheering Donna on.
One thing I love about the end of doomsday/start of this episode is the symbolism of having a woman in a wedding dress appear just as The Doctor lost someone who loved him.
I dont care what anyone says, "Love Don't Roam" is a banger
Donna is forever my favourite New Who companion, but I actually watched the Special way after I'm in the middle of Series 4. Made me understand why some people had mixed feelings about her. She's a little bit too...shouty and slap-happy. I think they maybe toned it down a bit after Tate agreed to come back as regular.
It’s also worth mentioning how Donna is far less “loud” if you will at the end of the episode. She has her own arc in the special, and then gets another for series 4.
it makes me think that this and love and monsters are a little close together because both have the first mentions of Mr.Saxon. Its on the Absorbalorfs paper and shooting at the star on the orders of Mr.Saxon.
I cant believe just now I'm understanding that losing the person she would marry and suffering a heartbreak is what makes the doctor bond with Donna. He was going through the same.
So right.
Kinda wish we saw the Racnoss move but understand budget limitations kept her in that one spot. Did anyone else have the giant Racnoss toy that was nigh impossible to make stand up on its on? :')
4:44 'Love Don't Roam,' is also by Neil Hannon, just like the song played towards the end of The Christmas Invasion. I don't know if that means anything.
Also, I like the idea that a giant spider from the Dark Times has a really cheesy sense of humour. The whole 'Iiiii *don't* !' bit always makes me laugh
This episode has only gotten better with age for me, maybe it was because I was still dealing with Rose leaving the TARDIS but I had never given it much thought back when it aired. Cut to all these years later and it's easily my favourite Christmas episode, Catherine Tate kills it in her first appearance as Donna, she feels to me like a fully realised character right from the start, the stakes are high, the twist with Lance is brilliant and just makes me love to hate him. The Racnoss is beautiful and grotesque at the same time and that scene with the Doctor watching as the Racnoss screams for her children is incredible. That one scene sets up what is, in my opinion, one of the best sub-plots in all of Doctor who, the Doctors slow transformation into the Timelord Victorious. I can't sing this episodes praises enough. Anyways, awesome review for an awesome episode.
I used to not be very keen on this episode, but nowadays I enjoy it quite a lot, since I've now seen the fully fleshed-out Donna of series 4. We've already got the great dynamic between Tennant and Tate, and the episode is a good bit of fun after the heartbreak of Doomsday.
your just working non-stop on these videos. i love it. This series is my favourite along side Davis's Doctor who openings. Its great to remember these episodes.
Donna has to be my favorite companion New Who did. I cant wait for your coverage of series 4 when she was the companion.
0:45 love that snake eater reference!
Binged through loads of your videos the last few days, excellent stuff! Really takes me back to being absolutely obsessed with Doctor Who during the Tennant era. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Series 3 - it's my personal favourite out of all NuWho
they said sell it to you've been framed i said mOrE lIkE tHe NeWs
This has to be my favourite doctor who youtube channel. The reviews are always great 👍 I think it would be great if you started doing ranking/lists as well
i like the way this channel does its best to see the good in episodes many fans hated.
I don't understand how and why this channel has only 15k
I think the plot line could've made much more sense with basically no substantial changes: make the OG Racnoss Ship full of Racnoss eggs. The eggs were put in some sort of stasis so they would survive for millennia. Because of this, when the Racnoss found them she couldn't get them to hatch, because they need Huon Particles to get them out of stasis. Then once they're out because they're new borns they'd be really hungry anyway
As a huge Donna fan, I actually didn't like her at first. She was just a bit too loud and a bit too annoying in this episode. She was finally toned down and that made her way more likeable
Implying that Donna ever stopped being loud
RTD did say he had to change her character after her first appearance
@@hermiona1147 she completely didn't obviously. But she also matured a lot. She wasn't loud about everything, she matured more. Or atleast that's how i see it.
Is she bovvered tho?
@@iusedtowrite6667 I didnt mean it in a negative way I love Donna
"Softening the Doctor for Martha in season three..." LOL no he was a dick to Martha most of the time xD
Hi, i wanted to say that I have recently discovered your channel, I've been watching most of your Doctor Who related content and I have to say that I am liking what I am seeing. Thank you so much for delivering great Doctor Who related content. 😀
I remember when the Taxi scene was previewed on the BBC (I think it might have been on Totally Doctor Who on CBBC back in the day). I was 11 and thought the CGI looked amazing - How times have changed! That being said the effects were a big step up from the previous 2 series. Funnily enough I remember being disappointed by this episode because I felt Catherine Tate was too screechy and I was so used to seeing her as Lauren. Looking back on it now, it's a pretty solid episode (albeit with a pretty hammy villain and henchman). And following Series 4, Donna is one of my favourite companions.
When Donna is yelling at the robo Santa I always think of Alex from the Arctic Monkeys saying "it's Highgreen mate via Hillsborough please"
2:10 she was mourning Mickey, 9 just didn't consider that possibility to demonstrate his alien nature.
Both this and Martha in Series 3 helped us new fans grasp more that it's Doctor Who, as opposed to "The Adventures of the Doctor and insert-companion-name-here". In this case, it was the first time we saw the Doctor without Rose, acting a bit more on his own initiative just like the 9th Doctor just before the events of Rose in Series 1.
This also became a life lesson for me as we learn we don't always stay with the same people throughout stages of our life.
I feel like this wasn't an end to series 2 but an opener for Series 3 because it'll show how the doctor will deal for the loss of Rose.
This is one of my favourite episodes. I keep re watching it now and them
I’m happy you refer to it as an epilogue for season 2 rather than a prologue for season 3. Netflix gets it so wrong calling it episode one of season 3
The kids in the car watching the Tardis bang around as it chased the cab with Donna. Priceless.
I liked the episodes, but I didn't consider it a christmas special. As you said, it didn't really feel "christmassy". But Donna is just pure class.
It's smaller on the inside. The Rocnos are there at the forming of the earth. They are why we are subconsciously afraid of spiders forever. That seems too important, or too big for a one off. They should have been a season long big bad.
The Doctor: I only like travelling by myself
Unless it's Rose of course, seriously, he didn't even mourn for Adric.
I loved this Donna, but seriously, wouldn't you have done the same if someone kidnapped you on your wedding day and you were walking up the aisle.
There is a difference rose was hot
@@thedoctor1263 Oh yeah, what about peri?
Any christmas special is special to me, because we may never see it again, cheers chris.
The BBC schedulers decide what goes out on Christmas Day, not Chris Chibnall.
ftumschk that based a viewing counts and popularity apparently, my aunt told me because she works at the bbc, but your right.
i think it’s definitely christmas this year because there aren’t any other shows who have prefilmed specials
william i kind of hope thats true, but I don’t want the Christmas specials messed up because recent episodes were not good unfortunately, i hope they are Written by somebody els.
@@william...1 well you were wrong
Arachnids can survive for at least a year (or decades) without any food. Many can survive extremes like no air for week, being frozen or to endure radiation of the top levels in whole eukaryota. Acari can deal with even worse conditions like a state of inactivity for long long years and a lot more. Some arachnid mums are also taking care of their babies, sometimes in a way similar to mammals or in more cannibalistic way. My son gave me lecture, but I don't remember all the crazy stuff.
I don't like loud people, I didn't like Donna the first time I watched her season. But I love her now after rewatching the runaway bride and season 4 several times. Catherine Tate is great. And she and David got along so well they love working together.
I think Donna was one of or the best companions in doctor who
So excited for you to review series three!!!!!!
When I was younger I always thought Donna was annoying, but now looking back I find her more endearing and my new favourite companion
Nice one! I really enjoyed (and still do enjoy) The Runaway Bride :D Infact, it was one of my all time favourites as a kid :O Great review!! :)
Short answer: yes
Long answer: yeeeeesssss
Donna ends up being the best companion, in my opinion
The Runaway Bride wasn't one of my favourite episodes or Xmas Specials from the revived series. But, David Tennant and Catherine Tate had good chemistry and I'm glad Russell T. Davies brought Catherine Tate as a regular companion in Series 4. Catherine Tate is a good actress and comedian and Donna Noble is considered to be pre Amy Pond. David Tennant's acting at the end of the Xmas Special 5:01 and 10:32 was good. The Runaway Bride was no masterpiece but a very enjoyable finale to the great 2nd season of the revived series.
I really hope that when we get the new Christmas special (With Tennant as the 14th) we get at least a little bit more of Introduction Donna.
Seeing her without the development and as abrasive before she eventually gets her memory back
Glad we got that.
You forgot about me did you? Well you’ll happen to meet me just four episodes later...
So we meet again
Extra credit for that amazing mgs snake eater reference sir. 👏
I love Donna, she's always been my favourite companion, and I don't think I ever found her unlikeable. I like the total lack of romantic chemistry but just friendship between her and the doctor, and I feel like she has the most personality of any companion, and the most emotionally engaging story from start to finish.
I am SO excited for Series 3.... Martha is my favorite companion (with Donna being a close second).
9:20 EPIC!!! Also...
*POCKETS!*
My first ever doctor who episode
I thought that the Racnoss in the ship were asleep/dormant/in hibernation and the Huon particles is what wakes them up from their sleep.
But yeah The Runaway Bride isn’t entirely a Christmas special and can feel like a series episode. The Runaway Bride is Series 2’s version of The Unquiet Dead, set a Christmas but not entirely a Christmas special haha
Amazing video and even more amazing Snake Eater reference!
Honestly this was my favorite Christmas episode
Donna telling The Doctor to stop was probably the moment she saved him from his death.
It was shown in an alternate timeline episode in Series 4 that because Donna wasn’t there in this special, she wouldn’t have begged the Doctor to stop, which ultimately led to his death
Seeing as it was never supposed to be a christmas special explains alot
0:46 Nice Snake Eater reference
Never thougth of this until now, but how did the Santas get the tree into the wedding reception? If they tracked Donna there, they would've arrived after her and the Doctor, so how is the tree already there?
Personally it’s not one of my favorites, but there’s still a lot to love about this episode
I love the intro sound
I love Donna, her personality being so different is what is refrshing about her , she and the doctor are so funny toguether
Easily the best Doctor who youtuber!
I Love you for making a MGS 3 reference ( 0:47 )
i went to a wedding yesterday and the bride's dress had pockets (for her vows and some tissues) and i thought about Donna.
That Snake Eater reference, though! Now I have to subscribe!
“she shouts at the doctor, accusing him of drugging and kidnapping her, before calling him a martian, a spaceman, and threatening to take him to court. their chemistry is absolutely perfect.”
I think as time has moved on I have learned to enjoy this episode more
Donna was highly annoying in this episode but it now serves as stark contrast to the genius that was the character in series 4
It does set up a nice bridge from the more casual style of series 2 to the appointment TV accolade that truly befits the shows modern pinnacle of seasons 3 and 4
Honestly, the villain in this episode made me cringe so damn hard, I can now clench my face into a fist!
Donna and 10, by far the best doctor and companion!
I disagree
Nice little metal gear solid reference there ;)
I would love the roboforms to return in another Christmas special
That man made a Metal Gear Solid reference. Thought we didn't notice. But we did.
What a thrill
@@HarboWholmesWith darkness and silence through the night ... The Bond song that never was... (what an earworm, although i have to say "The Only Thing I Know for Real" from Metal gear rising is fighting with snake eater for number one)
6:30
Hillary clinton was born for this role, i guess that everyone in the Makeup Department also worked quit hard on painting her Red.
I did a funny there.
I got emotional just watching your review....and I so want my husband ( not one of River Song's) to re watch it with me....even though he claims to hate DW and watches each new episode once only
07:10 * Arachnoid, not insectoid.
The musics is always good during this period of the show. That should go without saying.
One of the best, rarely talked about elements of The Runaway Bride:
It’s the first time we see the Series 3 lighting of the TARDIS.
I really disliked the blue lighting on the faces of characters in Series 1 and 2, and the vasoline filter of Series 1 made it even worse. Doctor Who is much easier on the eyes with increased budget and equipment from 2006 onward, and Runaway Bride is the first time we see that
That metal gear reference earned yourself a sub my friend
That Snake Eater ladder reference 😂
I bet the doctor's first thought when seeing donna in the tardis "I'm still mourning over my practically dead wife I'm not ready to move on!!!"
Donnas my favourite companion
The episode is in the series 3 dvd box set
God I love Donna so much!
The Empress didn’t recoil in disgust alone. She was also terrified as on the verge of her resurrecting her race one of the people who caused their very genocide showed up ready to stop it. The fear as your unborn are threatened by (one of) the one who killed your people all those years ago...
Every time you make these I go and watch the episode your video is about
I always saw this episode as part of season 3 and not 2.
I absolutely adore this episode.
The Racnoss aren’t technically insects. They’re arachnids.
Lets just pray to god the BBC put Revolution of the Daleks at Christmas instead of the New Year
Okay I know its cheesy but I miss seeing random civilians screaming and running around whenever theres a world ending threat. It just makes it seem more real and serious. The more recent seasons have focused too much on the main characters in my opinion, and lost a lot of stakes.
Early gang here, our comments are gonna be lost
I think Donnas reaction is really realistic and I love her. Unfortunately my boyfriend hates her, but I think I wasn’t a fan of hers on my first watch either :D
