    This came at the perfect time. Occasionally, I will catch myself falling asleep only to have a hypnic jerk to wake me up. But knowing that my brain is on sentinel duty and trying to protect me from wakefulness has lead to many mornings of wondering if I fell asleep. I would just accept that if I did or didn't fall asleep that it didn't matter one way or the other. But learning that my brain can monitor its own monitoring gives me more clarity of these bumpy nights. Thanks for the video!

    I just discovered your channel this morning after my 2nd night in a row of sleeping only 2-3 hours (after the last month of less severe insomnia). When I first woke up this morning I was at the point of despair. For some I decided to do yet another internet search for insomnia helps. I ended up on Reddit and someone mentioned you. I’ve now watched a few videos and read the reviews for your app and I am hopeful that I can sleep again! I am going to watch more of your videos and consider downloading the app. Thank you for giving me hope❤

    Thanks for the videos- I’ve watched them off and on as my insomnia is also off and on. Sometimes I’ll go weeks sleeping great then it creeps back with a vengeance or comes on more slowly. Last night was one of the first where I thought I’d never fall asleep and had a panic attack. I’ve had to rely on hydroxyzine to get through it but I know this is a sleep effort. I’m hoping just continuing education and prayer will help. So odd how mine is off and on unlike most people

    I have had this for weeks now. I have always struggled with my sleep due to being autistic but the last 3/4 weeks have been hell. I take forever to fall asleep and when i finally calm down and start to feel like i am falling asleep my brains tells me you are falling asleep and all of a sudden im wide awake again. I sometimes fall asleep for a while in the early hours of the morning but my dreams are so vivid i get scared and wake up. I think all day long about sleep and keep telling myself i must have a condition such as fatal insomnia. Im driving my whole family crazy they have to keep ressuring me all day. My wife tells me she sees me falling asleep sometimes but im not sure if i have or not. Im scared when it gets to bedtime every night i think im scared not to sleep and also to sleep at the same time. Im not really sure what to do anymore.

    Hi! Thanks for this video- it was very helpful. Sleep monitoring is by far the biggest hurdle for me when it comes to sleep issues. How can I stop sleep monitoring? Or will the monitoring naturally go away as my anxiety about sleep lessens over time?

      Hi there! Any time :-) so glad you found it. And I definitely see it like you said, in the end, the monitoring naturally fades away, when we are no longer anxious about sleep. If we try to stop sleep monitoring, then we create this problem that our brain wants to monitor even more!

    This is the main thing that keeps my insomnia going. It made me fear the actual act of falling asleep. I know it’s the anxiety that keeps trying to catch the moment I fall asleep and overthinks it. I feel like it’s the main hurdle that I need to figure out how to overcome. I don’t know how though 😢

    Hey Daniel, I have a questions. I started watching your Videos around 6-7 Months ago, additionally I read your, and two other books about sleep and CBTi/ACT. It all makes sense for me and I understand sleep so much better know. You also always say that education is key but I have the feeling that your channel become kind of a safe zone for me. I think it would be time to take a sleep detox for some weeks to do the final step in recovery.
    So my question is, how do I know if watching videos about sleep is education or more reassurance seeking cause sometimes I think I am watching your videos to avoid my anxiety?

    Daniel, this is v much appropriate for the brain sleep-jerk thing!! And you know when I was a child I had this crazy-kid idea to see if I could stay awake going into my dreams & look around. Of course you can't do both and this is where my jerks started. It was fine at first till I felt slightly stressed I was getting tired at school. I left the whole thing alone (which was easier to do as a child!) & got on with life then it all returned at 24 when I was in a stressful new situation that brought up a lot of insecurities. I've struggled ever since & am in really bad patch now. It really is a monitoring of the monitoring plus v bad feelings of shame about the whole thing which doesn't help. I got pretty obsessed about exacting the approach over last few years, despite some full months of good sleep. This way of putting it softens my urges to have the exact right mindset which then somehow now fades from my grasp. I am hoping to go knowingly & gently with this latest honing of the info 🙏🏻

    Hi Daniel,
    I only started having trouble sleeping 4 weeks ago. I felt as if my life was in a downward spiral, I was experiencing anxiety like I've never felt. Although I *only* had a couple of "zero" sleep nights, not even back to back, one of the mornings after that I found your video with Ari, and it was the first thing that calmed me down. I watched it twice. After that, I desperately continued with sleep efforts until I remembered your channel again about 2 weeks later. Since then, everyday has gotten a little better. But, I felt like I hadn't had it hard enough, everyone elses story was worse than mine, I kept thinking isn't mine going to get worse? Everyone says I have to go through the struggle for a long time before I will learn enough for it to get better. I was expecting the speedbump, anticipating it, while also thinking, "I havent been struggling that long, so maybe my fear will just go away quicker" I was scared to put too much effort into learning more about it because mine wasn't as bad as others. Alas, lastnight my anxiety was pretty high again. I thought I wouldn't get any sleep again, but after a few hours my hyper arousal actually dwindled and I fell asleep. I woke up realizing, my brain really can't predict the future. Im going to have a good day today, even though I doubted myself so much lastnight. It strangely opened me up to accepting learning more, and have finally started watching your Natto videos. Just wanted to share in case anyone else here has a similar experience 😊

      Thanks so much for sharing and you know, it can take some courage to do this, to look inside, learn about ourselves… I’m glad you found this. And you know, nobody knows the timeline, but when it becomes about learning in a way that can help with life in general, then it no longer feels like a race, and then there’s no struggle, then it’s easier and easier. @@chuforeichi hi, yes often I think the hyper awareness comes from monitoring. Maybe it always is, I was about to write that it can be when we are just scared… but then are we ever scared without monitoring? I don’t think so. And yes, letting it be truly helps.
      You know, it is very possible to want something, and at the same time be willing to accept it if we don’t get it. It’s like Michael Jordan, he was super competitive… but didn’t criticize himself if he missed a shot.

    A question Daniel if you have time. I've been doing way better still, have a speed bump every few weeks or so that knocks sleep confidence. Someone tried to recruit me earlier this week for a new job, and that Brough back a lot of stress of "what if I did that and I didn't sleep and things didn't go well etc". Made me feel a little stuck and sad. Writing this out I kind of know the answers already from your teachings but wondering if you have been asked about this before?

I'll start with kindness. Nothing works & the anxiety makes it worse as im already exhausted... forcing sleep isn't working but surrendering is scary.

    Question: how do you feel about mixing aspects of Natto with CBT-I? As in, picking and choosing what works--is this possible? I feel Natto and CBTI are directly opposed in thought.

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  Год назад

      Alexander, you’re so welcome 😊! Thanks for the kind words and you know, I think whenever the intent is not to control, or to try to have control, whatever we do is fine.
      For example, we teach on our timeless sleep window, which can look like CBTi but the intent is the opposite! So we can say that yes, if one approach is aimed as control, and the other is aimed at letting go, then those are opposed.
      But in reality, there’s much in CBTi like education that is fantastic so there’s much to combine 🙂

    I’m a bit confused. Are you saying the monitoring is only a “problem” for falling asleep if we treat the monitoring as a problem? If we just let the monitoring occur it shouldn’t interfere with sleep? And eventually fades away? I’ve been finding great success watching your videos and this seems to be a final hurdle for me. Which, of course, creates uncertainty around what to do with the monitoring and then creates more hyper arousal.

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Nathan, really glad things have gotten easier and you know, as confusing as it is, you said it here. The monitoring can become quite intense if we treat it as a problem to be solved, because the struggle IS our problem solving. But when we acknowledge it may keep us from sleeping well at this point, but that it’s just what the brain does when it’s frazzled, then the problem solving fades and the monitoring too…

    • @nathant2601
      @nathant2601 9 месяцев назад

      @@thesleepcoachschool8192 Thank you for replying! Ah yes... another great reminder of how the problem solving itself is the "problem" and what creates the cycle. It's so easy to get pulled back into trying to "solve" a "problem" that isn't actually a problem needing solving. Funny how hard it is to "get this" when we're in the confusion/anxiety state and yet how clear it can be when we are not! I think a big part of it is impatience and not lettings things unfold in their own time. I want it to fade/go away but I can't control that.

      @thesleepcoachschool8192  9 месяцев назад +1

      @nathant2601 anytime, so glad it made sense. And it’s so clear it do because you contextualized super nicely, and 100% agree, we all will want anything that troubles us to stop asap and wonder how long it will take. It’s so human, but yes, it’s letting time pass that ironically leads to what we want sooner than doing anything to speed it up. Seeing this helps much 🙂
