- THESE SWEET PASTRIES ARE VERY POPULAR CALLED "MILLOPITES" WHICH TRANSLATES - LARD PIES - ORIGINATED IN THE KARPASIA AREA IN THE NORTH OF CYPRUS, WHICH IS STILL UNDER THE TURKISH OCCUPATION. IN THE OLDEN DAYS THE HOUSEWIVES USED THE PORK FAT AFTER IT WAS FRIED, THUS THE NAME MILLOPITES! NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "MILOPITA" WHICH TRANSLATES APPLE PIE.... NOWADAYS OF COURSE, INSTEAD OF PORK FAT, WE USE VEGETABLE OIL... VERY TASTY! ENJOY MAKING THEM.... GOOD LUCK!
INGREDIENTS - “MILLOPITES” OR “PISCHIES”
For the dough
2 cups plain flour
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 scant cup water (110 ml)
1/2 tablespoon Brandy
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
Pinch of salt
30gr of melted butter for brushing
Cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling
Vegetable oil for frying
Ground Walnuts to garnish
For the syrup
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
4 cloves
1 stick of cinnamon
1 piece of lemon rind
1 tablespoon orange blossom water
Hello Stavros, fantastic Cypriot recipe my friend, and looks very delicious. My parents were born in the village called karpasi. Unfortunately we became refugees after the Turkish invasion. Sorry Pinar for not responding sooner. I only just received your message! Yes you can freeze them. I don't see the point really as these pastries last a very long time. You can cover them with silver foil and place them in the fridge if the weather is very hot. They stay fresh for more than a week! Sending you best wishes!!!

I'd like to ask orange blossom water is what we call in Greek ανθόνερο (anthonero)? I don't like ανθόνερο can I replace it with orange juice? Thank you for the recipe. I will definitely try it
Hello Maria, Thank you for the lovely comment. You don't have to use Anthonero, if you don't want to, and yes you can use orange juice instead..... But 1 tablespoon of orange blossom water it blends in with the rest of the spices and enhances the flavour! You can hardly taste it.
