I'm glad I found you . I subscribed a long time ago. You finally showed up in my feed.
This is incredibly helpful. I've never had a dog before but we are expecting our first puppy, a Havanese, in Spring 2021. This is an excellent video to get a sense of what to expect.
Awesome so glad to read!
Where are you located? I live inN.E. Pennsylvania. I have been raising Havanese for a long time.
This video was so helpful. Our 8 week, home 1 week, Havanese knows the potty command! I cycle through crate time, playpen time, lap time, and outside time. Your recommended structure from the "taking your puppy home video" works perfectly. At what age can I advance him around the house with more trust & freedom? I don't want to risk accidents as he's doing so well right now this way. Thank you for your calm and firm training. I love it.
Excellent video. No magic just common sense and show it’s putting in the time. Beautiful puppy and great job
i’m picking up my havanese in 6 days, your videos have helped so much!!
Yay! Congratulations! Thank you so much for watching!
I am in Pennsylvania. Where are you located?
Thank u so much! I started the training with my 8week old Morkie. She hasn't had an accident yet. This video is amazing!
Great job both of you!
Thank you for this video. I'm welcoming a 10 week old Havanese next week, so this is very helpful.
Hello. I get my ten week old tomorrow. How are things going for you?
@@stephstew5253pgh
It’s going okay. The best advise from the vet was to crate him 2 hours in the morning and afternoon. He has learned to hold it longer. Now I leave him in the crate up to 3 hours and he seems to be just fine. He can probably hold longer but I haven’t tried. He goes outside but I also use training pads with a tray with a mesh cover over it. I also use “Go here” spray. It seems to help a lot. Good luck with your puppy. 😊
Thanks so much for this video! We get our Havanese puppy soon. Two questions: Where/how far away do you keep the puppy crate from you during the night? I've read you can keep it right in your bedroom, but is this the best option? And what do you do if it's raining outside during these first key training days? Thank you!
This video was super helpful! Thank you for sharing this footage.
Glad to read! Thank you for watching!
This is brilliant! I am going to be losing some sleep quality but but it all be worth it.
I am going to get one puppy girl in spring 2020 to maybe fall this year and I have literally trained exactly like you are in the past with another breed and it’s a lot of work in the beginning and it is the best investment that you can give your dog I had a dog and she never went in the house once he started from day one
That’s awesome and great to read!
I need a speaker for this laptop, I can barely hear what you where saying. But I appreciated very much what I did hear and loved your video. Persistence pays off!
Havanese dogs want to be close to their human family. You should keep your crate in your bedroom.
so I am getting a havanese dog in a few weeks is there anything in particular that I should get for my dog
Have you seen my “What to Expect” video. I list the essentials there from my experience. ruclips.net/video/CJR5wDe1Di8/видео.html
@@WittleHavanese Hi! I'm in dental school and I have a roommate. My biggest concern is about barking. What is your experience so far regarding that?
i just got one from a shelter and these are helping with his previous habits
Awesome! So glad to read that. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the video I'm getting my havanese puppy tomorrow and can use all the help I can get!
Yay! Congratulations!
Fantastically helpful!! Thanks!
Thank you for all of your videos, I have been binging to prepare for a puppy who will be 8 weeks next month. Do you have any tips for outdoor training when living in an apartment? I want him to learn not to relieve himself indoors as soon as possible. Would it be ok at that age to have him leashed? Thank you!
This video was not weird at all! Thanks for sharing your wittle Willow!
This is actually Stormy! I believe I said Willows name in The video because she was jealous I was helping the puppy. Lol.
Should I have a pen outside if my yard is large or leash my puppy. I have not picked her up yet
We are doing well at the nightime potty training, but are struggling during the day. Do you recomment taking the pup out every two hours and waiting until she goes?
find this very useful. during the day how often should we take them out to go?
Please do more videos 😊
Thank you thank you so helpful .Do you keep your doggie in the crate all day while in the potty training stage ? I was given my fur baby and no idea how to teain him as a puppy he's 3 years old now I wish I would have had this important information back then .I just did the best I could at that time .He does go on a potty pad as I'm in an apartment now but about to move into a house with a yard do you think it's to late to potty train him to go outside instead of on the potty pad ? He also marks inside have I failed my darling Havanese? Thank you such I love your vlogs .(:
How long to get her to stay in crate without all the crying?
Is outside potty area artificial turf? And what size is it? Thank you so much for these informative and helpful videos.
Im getting my havanese soon and we were planning on having two kennel spots, one in our room and one in our kitchen. But we have A LOT of stairs to make it from upstairs and down and out of the house. Im scared my puppy wont be able to walk all of the stairs to go outside and we dont have any grass in our patio area. Im not sure what to do. Do i carry my dog for the time being down the stairs for potty time? Is it okay for me to leash our puppy this young to go outside? Ive read so many things and now Im unsure :(
@Bonnie Vinnedge - following this comment because I have the same situation. Mine is coming home in 5 weeks. Did you find a solution that worked?
@@tanishiabeacham4544 I didn’t potty train like this I took my guy out every two hours for six months and I really wish I would’ve seen this video it would’ve saved me some sleep but we always carried ours till he got bigger you can’t hurt a dog by caring it up and down stairs 😊
I probably did the two hours because I slept with mine he sleeps in my bed I don’t crate train.
Loving these videos, can’t wait to welcome our havi in less than a week. If we potty train with the potty box, can we move the potty box around so it,s not so far to go at night or do we keep it in the same place, winter weather with snow here will not make outdoor potty training great for puppy or parents
Hello your potty training video at 8 weeks was amazing! Thank you. We are picking up our 8 week old havenese next Sunday. The first night you do every 3 hours? Then 2nd night every 3hours again? On the 3rd night do you still take them out every 3 hours or 4 hours? Do you keep increasing or do 4 hours for a few weeks?
I’d do every three hours until you notice your puppy can hold it longer. I followed Stormy’s cues here and what she could tolerate. When she gave a little whining I knew she needed a potty break. Does that help?
@@WittleHavanese Hi. Thank you. Yes it did. We live on the 3rd floor so have been getting quite a bit if exercise lol. But he seems to sleep through the night and usually we can bring him out when he wakes up in time to get him inside to pee and sometimes poop too. We tried a small crate and it didn't work well. So we decided to try a small crate that opens up to a play pen which works well. He no longer poops in the house. When he can't hold his pee and we can't get to him in time he will pee on puppy pads in his play pen and we also leave pads outside of play pen in kitchen gated area which he usually finds. Once in a while he has a mistake and misses pad or goes on floor. But great improvements. He is now 11 weeks old ☺️
Can you make a video or just explain me how should I potty train my puppy (she is coming in 3 weeks:)) in a apartment. What should I do, where does she need to go potty...I realy love your videos and you explained me a lot of things, thank you!!
For apartments I highly recommend a potty box! I have a video showing how we make ours and it’s the same concept as the potty training video except you use the box and praise when she uses it. Congratulations on your new Havanese!
can i do this method with an 11 week old?
I really appreciate your advice! I have a new puppy expected mid July so I am preparing early
Congratulations on your Havanese! Thank you so much for watching!
We just got a Havanese puppy and we love him! How does this work during the day? What do we do when we/they make a mistake and have an accident on the carrpet?
Just clean the accident and take note how long between potty breaks it was.
Use an enzyme cleaner. And then offer the potty in a closer span.
Thanks for this video we were looking for a video on potty training specifically.
Dan McDonnell awesome. Hope it helps! 🙂
This video is perfect. I was able to make the screen no problem. I brought home a 9 week old puppy last week and am training him to use the puppy box 100%. My yard is large for a Havanese, but the fencing is not completely enclosed and I don't want him getting out or getting hurt. I put him in the puppy box after taking him from the crate and soon after eating. He goes pee immediately after 1 week of excessive praise. His poop schedule is a little unpredictable so we've had accidents. How can I get him to go in the puppy box on his own when he has to pee instead of me picking him up and placing him in the puppy box?
Definitely start using a potty command if you haven’t already. And place him in until he pees.
@@WittleHavanese thanks, already doing the pee command. Do you have advice for how to get him to get in the potty box on his own instead of me picking him up and placing him in the potty box? Maybe my question shod be with consistency, how long before he goes to the potty box on his own when he needs to go pee or poop?
I am struggling with my 12 week old Havanese. We got him when he was a little over 9 weeks and someone is always at home so far with him. He yet pees and poos inside even he is playing even tho we take him out every hour. Night he sleeps 6 - 7 hours straight. I shall try your method!
Great let me know how the potty command helps!
I have the same problem. She goes outside and gets rewarded and then pees and poops in the house too.
really helpful. One question..I've been told by the breeder not to let a puppy do stairs until 6 months old...what's your view please
Ramps are ideal because the downward motion can be hard on them. But the shorter steps I haven’t had issue with personally.
Hi, you have been so helpful! I've read through other comments to see if someone had asked the question already, apologies if I missed it. But are you walking up multiple times a night to take the pup to potty until they are 4-5 months old? Am I understanding that correctly?
Yes that is correct. About every 3 hours I take her out.
Your night time potty training works like a charm! No problems with that at ALL!!!! Its the rest of the day. We go potty first thing in am. No problem. She then eats breakfast, Ill take her out....she goes potty.....I'll bring her in, play maybe 2 mins. and a little puddle might appear! Ahh! I've used a urine clean up product to "clean up" or deter puddles! I'm getting paranoid when she starts to sniff.
Try staying out a bit longer before coming in. Give her a chance to potty twice.
Thank you
Thank you for watching! Happy to be able to help!
I am getting a Havanese this spring. I noticed you have an outdoor kennel. If I want my pup to pee in the same area, should I put up a small fence and always bring her to this spot? Will she then know to go to that area when you remove the small fence? Hoping that is the case.... thanks for any insight...
My only concern with this is that my pup is so small (a toy poodle and only 2 pounds right now) and he hasn't had all his vaccinations or started flea treatment, so I worry about letting him go outside before he's ready (I think I read that it's 16 weeks when they finish vaccinations).
If you don’t have an enclosed back yard then I recommend a a potty box. Same concept except you use the box with the command. ruclips.net/video/Ph1_9YY2_is/видео.html
I'm actually getting a havapoo puppy are they hard to potty train?
Our back yard is mostly fenced, but not completely. I know I should wait until my little guy is fully vaccinated before I let him out on the grass back there. In the winter we frequently have deer in our yard, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we had an occasional raccoon visit. Will it ever be safe for him to play on grass where wild animals have been?
Yes once he’s vaccinated and gets his rabies vaccination with supervision it will be safe disease wise. The only concern would be animals trying to take him since he’s small. That’s where supervision comes in. 🙂 just make sure he’s not trying to eat any dead animals.
Do you leave her in the crate all day too? Or just at night. I’m about to get a Havanese shih tsu mix and want to potty train her right away and want to know what to do during the day.
I love your videos by the way they are so informative
Sara Grace anytime I can’t supervise her she was kenneled until trustworthy. She would get a potty break then for about an hour I would let her run around supervised and playing. 30-45 minutes after food or water I make sure to offer a potty break. Puppies sleep about 20 hours a day. Lol. So the play time they do get makes them sleepy. Does that help?
Wittle Havanese yes thank you !
Sara Grace perfect. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions. 🐾💜
Sara Grace also I recommend a potty box instead of pee pads. If you haven’t seen that video yet. I have one how we make the screen and what we use for the potty box.
I have enjoyed ALL of your videos! My little 9 week old pup is great at night (thanks to you). She also has "wait" (when I open the kennel door) down to a science (thanks to you)! My trouble is....she will potty outside almost on command (but it's 3-4 times) but will also have accidents inside even if it has just been 10 mins! After she does her business, should I just have her out of the kennel for a short period of time? I do have her food/water accessible at all times when she's out of the kennel...is that bad? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Great question! Following!
Yes. Constant food and water will be need for constant potty breaks. A potty box is sooo soo good for these tiny puppies until they get a bit bigger. Or limiting food. Offer food 3-4 times a day depending on your puppy. And water with food. That will help you find a better schedule. Or keep an eye out when puppy eats or drinks and offer potty option shortly after.
Great job! Keep up the great work. She’s a baby and with consistent training she will get it down. Don’t worry!
I would suggest not using their crate as a punishment. They're supposed to see their crate as their home, as their safe space. This is what I've learned over the years from different training facilities. 😊
Every dog is different . Just have to follow what suits your dog. Sometimes a dog will whine and if you keep showing up everytime it whines even if its to correct her or not they know whining gets you to them so anytime they want to see you they whine.
I think the biggest thing youre doing here and the KEY to doing ANYTHING in training with a dog is CONSISTENCY alot of people are all over the place with their schedules and training of a dog and wonder why their dog is so horribly mannered. Chances are its the owner not being consistent with them in the beggining. If you want a dog to learn something all you have to do is be consistent with whatever it is for a few days straight and that dog will fall into the routine. Dogs actuallly love routines. It gives them something to look forward to and they dont have to whine because they know .. say they see the sun coming up and you always get your dog when the sun comes up they will know youre coming soon and wont be a big deal to whine.. Say you always get your dog out of the cage after you start a pot of coffee every morning... they will learn the noise of the coffee maker and know its almost time for them to come out ... they learn EVERYTHING. so the key to a good small havanese is ROUTINE and CONSISTENCY
Hi I just saw your video on making a litter box, great video. I was wondering if it is possible to train both potty box and outside when I'm home. If so, any tips? Thank you!
Yes it is. Potty command would be the biggest thing. Just teaching and using that to train them for out and indoors.
Hello, I do not understand how you use the potty box. Do you use while you are training her to go outside. Please explain how you do the potty training from day one. I am confused about how the process works. Thank you! Hattie
Hi there. So a potty box I recommend for families who can't take small puppies out in the middle of the night, apartment living or if one needs to be gone for a full shift for a small puppy. You can use them both but how do you plan to potty train? Do you work from home or away from home?
we've gotten a new havanese and things are going ok, but even after a week or so (he's 9 weeks now), he'll have a second pee or pooh when he comes back in. is this something that anyone else has experienced, also, sometimes my wife finds it hard to tell if he's actually peed since he's so low to the ground.... love this video... thanks so much
Yaa exactly even when our havanese pees he doesn't bend so it is hard, but we get to know cause when he wants to go he sniffs everywhere and whenever he does that we take him to the place he should go. so ur dog also must be giving signs of going to the bathroom, so try and observe him and you'll find out when he has peed
Also a good way to tell is to look under. Havanese have a bit of hair there so you should be able to tell if you wipe with a little toilet paper or look.
They do a very short squat and their legs go wider.
How soon after coming in do they pee or poop again?
Hi Irah! I've been trying to potty train my 11-week old havanese Mia for the past week since I've had her. I take her out every hour during the day and yet she still has accidents in the apartment. I have set up a potty spot (a patch of artificial grass with a doggie diaper underneath) on the balcony, even added potty training drops, but she won't go there to potty. I would like her to use the balcony on days when the weather is really bad and cold but I don't know how to get her used to go there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also how long till they can hold it during the night for like 6 or 7 hours? Thank you!!!
Have you set a potty command in place with her that she understands?
Any accidents she has inside be sure to clean well.
Also use a paper towel to soak up from the accident and place it under the potty patch. So it will have her scent.
Usually around 4-5 months puppies do well with one long stretch at night.
@@WittleHavanese thank you for your reply. I have a potty command and I've done all that. But she still doesn't go to the balcony when she can't wait to go outside although we take her every hour... what I did is now she's allowed in the house for half an hour after we come in and then she goes in the pen, where she doesn't go potty. I would like to have her around the house more but as I said she doesn't use the balcony just goes wherever - all over the place since I do clean it well and I have put away all the carpets. At least night-time is not a problem anymore which is great 😃🐾
@@WittleHavanese any idea what I could do? I take her out for a pee, put her in her playpen for an hour and then she pees in the hallway on the way out!! How can she hold it for 8 hours at night but can't hold it for an hour and wait to walk outside during the day!? Help! 😣
Do you use different command names for wees and poos or just hurry hurry to do both businesses. 😊
I ain't the youtuber but I say "Go poop" and "Go pee" when I take my Havanese outside. She learned how to pee and poop outside in about a month and has recognized the commands so she does her business on command haha.
Hi! Thank you for your terrific videos! We’re on Day 3 with a 9 week old puppy, and she is whining profusely at night. We keep her in a crate downstairs, and take her out every 3-4 hours like in your video. Any advice? The only thing that calms her down is to lay down beside her crate for a little while, but we don’t want to create bad habits. Thank you
Have you tried tapping the top of the crate and shushing her yet? And you’re only taking her out when she is quiet and calm yes?
Will try!! Thanks so much, and congratulations!!!
Hi there!
We are taking our puppy out for a night pee but he cries after we put him back in his crate. He thinks it is play time...should we let him cry it out?
Thanks
What if it is really cold outside?
A coat or indoor potty box if necessary.
Do you set an alarm to get up? or did you wait to hear her in the night?
And what causes the accidents? Waiting too long before taking her out of the crate?
Omgosh we got our Havachon a month ago and it’s been a nightmare! He’s 3 months now, you think we can start over?! He now hides or waits until I leave the room to pee/poop, probably bc of me saying NO every time he went inside. Idk what to do, I take him outside and stay forever waiting and the minute we go inside and I turn my back to wash my hands or something THEN he goes potty 😭😭😭 I’m desperate!
Hi! Love your videos! What do you do when it’s pouring down raining?
We try and wait for a slow down of rain and we use our potty command to have a very quick potty break.
But you could train for a potty box if you found it easier.
So what does this look like if you can't get up in the middle of the night? Would you just leave a potty pad near the puppy so they have a place to go?
I also wonder about this. I'm really thinking about getting a puppy but want to make sure we're all up for the challenge.
How long should you wait before you bring them back inside if they haven't gone? And if they haven't gone when you take them out, should you take them out sooner the next time?
The trick with this method is to always wait until they go. They learn their potty command to go on command and empty their bladder so that eventually as soon as you give them the command as puppies they walk out and go potty.
Thank you for this refresher, my little girl is coming Dec 20th, 🥰
Congratulations! That’s so exciting!
Aww so cute
WaterGaming thanks! I thought I was just biased. Ha!
Not at all
My havanese is 3 months old I just got her recently. I go to work sometimes not gone all day but when I leave I leave floor pads in my room. I do take her outside sometimes to pee/poo but idk if she might be use to doing it more on the pads? Only cause she doesn’t really do her business outside but she plays.. tips on breaking room habits? ALSO, I have 2 other dogs that are use to going outside in the yard by themselves to do their thing do I let her out with them or separate for now?
The potty command helps greatly. And yes if you trust the other two dogs around the new puppy they will definitely show her how it’s done! Dogs follow their pack so that would be great for her. Congrats on your new Havanese!
Is it okay to have the crate in my room where they can see me? Or should I put them in a place where they can’t see me? I’m just wondering because there is no good place where I could put the crate where she can’t see me and I would be able to hear the puppy whining to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. In that case should I wake up every few hours and if they are asleep, wait a few more? Would love advice for what’s best! Thanks!
Yes it is fine to be within the sight of your crates pup. I would wake every 2-3 hours for a brand new puppy on alarm and take them even if they haven’t whined. If puppy whines to go out and wakes you just be sure to only open the door when they are calm and not crying. And be sure to use the potty command so they know they are coming out for a potty break and not to play at night.
I love your videos!! I just got a havanese but he is 18 weeks he was somewhat potty trained but not sure... I have a question... if you catch them doing something inside what to do? I am retired and im always home so I don't Kennel him I have gated a section in the kitchen area only when i need to go out and cant take him with me...
For accidents I try and catch them mid act and make them stop and go finish outside. If it already happened and I didn’t see it I just clean with a product like natures miracle or vinegar. Using a potty command and praising when it’s done outside will help them understand that they did something correct and when you stop them inside and make them go outside they see that inside is bad.
my puppy was great in her crate after 3 days and then a week later she cried and whined for a long time. What do you suggest?
When is she crying? At night? During the day? What’s a long time?
How long did you have to wake up in the middle of the night altogether? Is it just to learn her potty command? Did you do it for a full month?
It depends on the pup. You can push the time out to their tolerance. I believe Stormy took until 4 months old to go through the night with the rest of the dogs.
how often do you increase the increments of time between potty breaks? each day or every couple or every week?
Typically you can start with every 2-3 hours. But you’ll want to not watch the clock and teach your puppy or learn their potty cue. Some teach a bell or button but most dogs will start to go by the door to signal they want to go out.
Wittle Havanese - At night I plan to take the puppy in the backyard for potty breaks as it is fenced. Even once trained, I’d like to let him out in out (for potty breaks) in the backyard - especially when unsupervised. Again, because it is fenced. But when I take him out to play and for a walk in the neighborhood, how will he know that he can also relieve himself there? Do I use the same potty cue for it?
I sure wish we had seen this 6wks ago.
Better late than never!
I ❤️ stormi and I want a havanese but my dad says to wait but I really want one
The good news that’s not a no! 🙂 just keep doing your research and you’ll definitely be ready when you find your new Havanese!
My 5 month old Havanese is terrible on toilet training! He does so many pees inside - like 5 an hour! We can’t keep up with that many trips 😢
what's the size of the crate? :)
That one is a very tiny one I had extra. We typically use a 24 inch. 🙂
How long on average does it take to potty train a Havanese? I know this is very late, but I would love to know! ❤️❤️
Within a week they should have the potty command down. And dependable by 6 months.
are willow and stormy related
They are actually! How did you guess? They share the same mommy.
$2500 is a fair price for a Havaness puppy?
Is she in a crate enclosure outside to potty? We live on 8 acres & I’m trying to figure out how to housebreak our 12 week old Havanese. I don’t want her running all over bc it’s not safe. Do you keep her in crate all day & take out to potty?
Yes. We have a pretty good sized property but we have this crate material fencing from Lowe’s! It’s really cool because you move it and it stakes into the ground easily or it can be like a playpen too.
I crate a lot but not all day this young. At 12 weeks you should be able to take out to potty and let play for about an hour safely. I recommend supervised. 🙂
How long to you do this for? Till what age can they go all night? Very helpful video!
Usually around 4-5 months they can do a good night stretch consistently. But I’ve seen some do it younger. So you’ll just have to follow your pups cues. They will let you know how long they go. Thank you so much for watching!
So do you need to get up every four hours until she’s 4-5 months old? Or is there a point where she’s no longer crated at night and comes to get you? Or if using a potty box, is free to use that during the night? Or do you always keep her crated at night?
As a child, we never used crates for our dogs, so it’s new to me.
I\'m not sure but, if anyone else wants to discover puppy training videos online try Loctavan Quick Puppy Strategy (just google it )? I've heard some great things about it and my buddy got cool results with it.
Do you know WHERE CAN GET ANOTHER LITTLE HAVANESE PUPPY MY LITTLE ONE WAS STOLEN. I'm just sick over her.
Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear your Havi was stolen. I can’t imagine. Hugs. Feel free to reach out to me through facebook or my website. I’d be happy to chat and see if there are any rescues or breeders near you. 🐾
Is her name hurry hurry? I want to know just so in case I need to say her name or have a code word for go potty.
Hurry hurry is my potty command. You can use whatever word you’d like to.
The Havanese in the video is Stormy. 🐾💜
Wittle Havanese aww stormy is soo cute thank you.
I feel bad the dog is in such a small box 😢
You can always put your pup in a bigger one. But that’s all the room she needed at night to help her potty train. She could stand up in there no problem. She was 4lbs. As she got bigger she got a larger crate. Don’t worry. 🐾💜
We use these. End Table Crate-

Why such a small cage? She can’t walk around
Thank you
