  • Manchester City Defender, Josko Gvardiol, was on his way to a hat-trick, already scoring two goals when a tackle on his teammate Julian Alvarez resulted in a penalty call. Seeing that it might be the first time on record that a defensive player scores a hat-trick, Man City captain, Kyle Walker, approached Gvardiol apparently asking him to see if he wants to try taking the penalty. A discussion ensued between them and Ruben Diaz and others, where to everyone's surprise, Gvardiol seems to refuse the chance.
Manchester City had been pursued by Arsenal in the title race for which Arsenal's goal difference is better. Man City might need the goal difference in case the penalty was missed. Whatever the reason is, Gvardiol humbly refused the offer, and the ball was given to the designated penalty taker who is Julian Alvarez, in the absence of Haaland who was substituted. As expected, Alvarez scored a beautiful penalty wrongfooting the goalkeeper and putting it in the right side of the goal.
This incident was so stark in contrast to what happened in Chelsea last month when a penalty award resulted in a fight for the ball with Madueke, Jackson and others trying to take the penalty instead of the designated penalty taker who is Palmer. It was a rather shameful sight.
