If you're in the market for a safety razor, the Rocnel SE-P is undoubtedly a top contender. It's built to last with its stainless steel construction, and its unique blade loading mechanism provides a safe and comfortable shave. However, as someone who has used this razor extensively, I feel compelled to share what I believe to be its one major flaw.
The Rocnel SE-P is notorious for its weight. At 139 grams, it's quite heavy compared to other safety razors on the market. While this weight might seem like an advantage, it can actually make shaving a bit more challenging, particularly for those who are new to safety razor shaving.
The weight of the Rocnel SE-P can make it more difficult to control the angle of the blade, which is crucial to achieving a close, smooth shave.
Overall, I believe that the Rocnel SE-P is an excellent safety razor with one major flaw. If you're an experienced wet shaver looking for a challenge, this razor might be right up your alley. However, if you're new to safety razor shaving, you might want to consider a lighter option to start.

I have owned an Ekster for about a year now, it is the best, most convenient wallet around.
@@WallyPankowski-wd8gb nice! Which one did you go with?
@@GregTardif I bought the carbon fiber. Just so convenient and small. Btw, i bought you some beer.
@@WallyPankowski-wd8gb I just saw that Wally! Thanks so much. I like the carbon fiber one too (based on looks)
That looks like something that would have been invented in the 1860's. It is an accident waiting to happen, no thanks, I need my blood.
Once loaded it’s a great shaver
Great review. Hard pass on this one.
Great breakdown of the positives and negatives of the razor, Greg.
I can't help but feel that using something (plastic) to push the blade out might be a tad easier.
Easier than pliers? Thanks Lee!!
@@GregTardif I was thinking that it might well be easier than pliers and less chance of accidentally scratching your beautiful razor.
I have an idea, let's make a shaver that's even more likely to cause an accident than a straight razor. Brilliant!
Hahaha!
Everything you said is 100% on point. This razor gave me a lesson in respect the first time out of the box. After a few shaves all has been forgiven and I do say that now I’m a big fan of this razor.
Nice honest review Greg! Rocnel should give you a tool or something as it seems one is needed to safely change blades.
yeah something. Not even sure what the tool would be aside from pliers.
Yeah, Greg. I saw how much of an issue it would be to insert and extract the blade and decided it was a definite pass for me.
I am happy with the shaves. just need to figure out if it outweighs my fear factor.
Couldn't you slide it out with another blade? Rocnel seems to like that way of loading blades. The GEM SE-G works in a similar fashion.
I tried that. The half blade is a bit flimsy for me. Will keep trying though 👍
That razor looks like a gem that won’t open
It’s very dense haha.
@@GregTardif ha! My wife says the same about me
@@charlespreiss3426 lol! My wife too about me
Goodness, I thought the assembly of the 150 gram SE50 was a challenge. This one looks very prone to injury. However, I bet it shaves great. 👍
On another note, good to see you're still killing it with the quality videos. 🤝👊✌
Thanks buddy. It's an interesting shaver for sure.
Drinking Morning Wood? 😂👍🏼 Pretty interesting razor! Almost like an injector razor but different. 😁👍🏼
Morning wood wakes me up 😂😂
@@GregTardif 😂👍🏼
Can you push the old blade out using the new blade? Injector style? I’m sure you’d have to be quite careful with it, but seems like that should work? Maybe wear leather gloves when doing it.
I tried it’s a bit finicky that way. Prying it out with pliers is my comfort zone (that would be an awesome emo album title)
@@GregTardif It’s definitely a flawed design. I see what they’re trying for, but don’t think splitting the head and screwing the handle on would have made it look any different.
There’s a reason razors have been made the way they are for over a hundred years - it works.
It’s nice looking though.
@@ChrisLael 🤷♂️ I was intrigued and impulsive
My razor is 175grams it is a beast
The original Rocnel was similar in looks. They sold it to a bunch of us RUclipsrs for $50. It is one of my Holy Grail razors. My only complaint is the smooth handle but I swapped it out.
The single edge one from 2016?
@@GregTardif Here is my original video on it

That one is a hard no for me 👎🏼. The unloading and reloading of the blade is way too much work for me personally. Nice review though Greg!
Gotta cover the good and the bad my man! Glad it helped
Hello Greg,
Just curious, if you had a less than perfect shave, no nicks or cuts but really bad razor burn, what aftershave balm would be your go to?…asking for a friend
Once I got through putting the blade in. Good shave. I lean towards unscented after shaves. I like American crew after shave balm with spf right now because my acne medication calls for it
Use the broken blade tabs, (or a wooden toothpick) to snag it from the side and slip it out towards the front. Easy peezy💪🏼
I’ll give it a shot
On the load, slant it in from the side, and use the tabs to pull it into place. I prefer to crack them off, leaving them attached is not an option imo
Will you be reviewing the TRC SS razor ? I'm sure you can get it for free..
I did not get one. I think they are sold out
I feel safer shaving with a Shavette than that haha
Samsies. Once the blade is in though…good to go
@@GregTardif What we do for a good shave haha
@@traumaticroids7929 chasing the dragon lol
Changing blades in a "safety razor" should be a no brainer. If it's not, something wasn't well thought of in terms of functionality in the first place.
That said, love the design.
The only hang up is the blade change everything else is awesome
ROCNEL Vs. ROCKWELL
A bit
Wouldn't a toothpick make the unloading easier?
A pair of pliers makes it kind of gruesome!😅
Maybe.. pliers are easy though
Your videos are phenomenal; you must be a professional videographer😅, that's how 😎 they are. Rocnel “Gem,” not so cool.😂
Thanks JB! I am not a “professional videographer “ just a hobbyist. But the kudos is much appreciated!
Oh yeah you are putting that blade in weird. Hold it by the tabs and slide it in from the front. Then, do not remove the tabs, there is no reason to do that. To remove, hold the tabs and wiggle out the front.
I tried it that way and was scared to cut my hand haha. Next blade swap I’ll try it again. Thanks
FrugalShave is right, keep the tabs on the razor.
You should try the Pearl Flexi, now that's a heavy razor!
Looks like it’s listed at 140 grams
@Shaving with Greg Tardif oh its a chonker. I honestly think it's too heavy! But it shaves amazing. Sinatra Lennon calls it the Rex Ambassador killer!
@@livewireblanco interesting. This here is about the same weight and is like 65% in the head. It’s pretty great (aside from the blade changing)
@Shaving with Greg Tardif I would say the Flexi is about 60% in the handle but it's adjustable and way easier to load. The handle is very easy to grip and comes with a stand. I actually thought of the Flexi when you said you like heavy razors. You should definitely check it out.
@@livewireblanco thanks!
He said chonker! Sweet wallet.
Haha
*Personally, I don't see the point of a one blade **-safety-** razor that is so unsafe!*
That caveat in mind...I suggest:
1-Trim the tabs before insertion, when you cut the blade in half.
2-Don't worry about removing a blade between shaves.
3-Use your new half blade to push out the old blade, no pliers required.
*IMHO, use a double edge safety razor as King C Gillette recommended, or learn to use a straight razor properly.*
lol
Thanks Robert. I tried pushing old out with new and even that is difficult. I think if this was a injector razor style you’d get more shaves per blade
Did you know you were going to have to swap blades like this?
I wasn’t aware. Saw it and bought it lol
@@GregTardif Just leave the tabs on the razor, that’s the only safe way of putting in and out the blade.
Think you’re right
That exposed end corner of the blade looks hazardous! I will definitely pass on this one.
it's interesting how it does expose a little on the sides. i haven't had an issue with it...yet
@@GregTardif When are you going to get on the Karve Overlander train? The Overlander is one of the few razors I’ve seen where you can do a 1 pass shave ATG with zero irritation…. It’s a real Game changer. Less passes = longer blade life & lower cost & less irritation. It’s a win-win-win. I know you’ve said ATG doesn’t agree with your face, but I think it might be the razor that fixes that for you. Several reviewers do the 1 pass ATG with that razor, so what do you have to lose?
@@billjohnsonseattle not sure. Maybe I’ll sell something to get something 👍
Sound like you maybe shouldn’t have bought this. I would return it. Too much work and taking the blade out is a little much.
I like the shave haha
Wait...WHAAAAT!?? I feel like I just had a weird dream where I watched you review a razor that doesn't open.
It seems like it was a prototype they stopped working on halfway through.
(I totally want one)
There's an old GEM ad campaign where they take on Gillette for advertising how easy it is to change blades. The GEM user keeps replying that it's the shave that counts.
Haha!!! Thanks Lee! It’s pretty cool
Great video, Greg, as always - but the razor? Seriously? It looks like a broken hammer. It should come with its own pliers and surgical kit. Anton Chigurh would love it… As for the rest of us - dude, life is too short and there are way too many other razors to choose from. Who gives a rats that it shaves okay? Sheesh. Cheers. 👍🪒
It's a cool concept. but I think they can improve on it.
