I think India should introduce a national defence fund involving voluntary contributions from all working citizens, and govt to match grant rupee to rupee. Citizens should be engaged in playing a part national defence so that you can have a hood night sleep knowing well your brothers and sisters in whit, blue and green are keeping an eye along the borders.😊

India has an ideal geographic position with the Himalayas to the North and the INDIAN Ocean to he East and West. It bears similarity to the US, safe for a united nation that believes in these god given characteristics.
Why is Modi Govt not increasing the defence budget ?
If an all out war break out between India and China/Pakistan, India will suffer and lose much much more than the savings accrued from the optimum defence budget cuts.
Gen Bakshi should have a meeting and apprise this critical lapses with the PM.

As it is the present soldier strength is insufficient on all sides. Second, arms & ammunition- India lacks modern warfare, modern sophisticated uniform with modern gear with night vision. War aircrats too insufficient
So let me play the counter General , Lets say I were to lead Chinese War effort , I would save 3 months worth of oil in deep Chinese territory and also in large ships in Russian controlled seas to the north of China . I would focus on electric cars to reduce demand of oil and let my stored oil last longer . I would shift logistics to electric high speed railway to reduce the role of oil in logistics . I would also build worlds biggest navy and expand presence in the waters of Thailand, Vietnam malaysia etc . China is already doing all of the above. Finally in case of war, I will totally ignore Indian navy and let them block all trade routes . I will focus entirely on capturing territory along the himalaya, I will push through Mayanmar , Nepal and Bhutan, I will push through POK. and capture as much territory as possible. Choking of global trade routs will hurt EU, US, INdia and Japan too . Everyone will be calling for a cease fire as India China war would be crashing all worlds stock market and a global recession will be certain. If Saudi and UAE does not sell oil , how will Indians send 30 billion dollars of remittance from there . China can afford to ignore India blocking its sea routes for 1-2 months . India cannot ignore the capture of Arunachal, Assam, Sikkim , Laddakh , Kargil etc There are no Chinese civilians in the Sea. While we have population centres on the Border with China . Conclusion : There is NO alternative of a Strong land based defence on the himalayan border . Yes it takes man power , but the country is filled with millions of unemployeed youth who want to join the army . Instead of giving free ration , government should give salary and hire some 3-4 lakh people . in any case government is taking almost all of the salary back as Tax , so government will not loose any money by paying salary .
