    The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)
    The players would meet each other four times, twice in Bled and once in both Zagreb and Belgrade. In Bled, the players stayed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, the site of Alexander Alekhine's historic triumph in Bled (1931). Mikhail Tal had just had his appendix removed less than two weeks earlier, but FIDE insisted he make it in time for the tournament. According to Tal, "I was not much troubled by the effects of the operation, apart from in a purely mechanical sense; during a game I did not feel inclined to stroll about ..."5 This information may have come as a surprise to Harry Golombek, who commented after Round 5 that "it is an impressive sight to see him (Tal) get up after he has made what he obviously thinks is a winning move and pace around the table like a man-eating tiger." It may also have surprised Bobby Fischer, who complained after his first game with Tal that whenever he "rose from the board ... he'd begin talking to the other Soviet players, and they enjoyed whispering about their or others' positions." Pal Benko later revealed that due to his "demanding" job in a US brokerage firm, he "didn't prepare at all" for the event, although he reckoned "I did reasonably well." He didn't. After the first cycle Tal, Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian shared the lead.

      This story is about low quality news. It seems to be a worldwide affliction. News outlets have always been slanted
      on the political spectrum, historically, only nowadays, it's a case of ignoring news and mostly reporting what they think
      helps their political cause. In the process, any kind of real reporting has become foreign to news outlets. The owners
      of the news outlets ( corporations would be the owners, here in the USA ), hire political goons, and it doesn't take too many
      goons to read the news, and carry on slanted interviews. It's much cheaper to get whatever news they print from Reuters
      and similar orgs, rather than have reporters on the payroll. I've checked this theory by comparing the stories of news events
      in different newspapers to find almost identical wording in each article. So, you aren't going to be reported correctly, ever,
      because their so-called "reporters" don't have those skills. They are political goons, masquerading as reporters. If you
      meet a reporter, the best thing to do is run away.

    Antonio this is what I like about your videos: the way you play winning variations out. It doesn't just help inexperienced players like me learn mating patterns, it strengthens analysis skills! I thought 1 ...e3 followed by 2. ..Qe4 and 3 ...Qg2 mate. Only afterwards did I find White has 3 Qc8+ and 4 Qe6+ exchanging queens. Thank you so much!

    • @groussac
      @groussac 6 лет назад +3

      Right. It's not so much the 'fake media' as the 'alternative facts' media. They pick and choose what to cover, leaving out an inconvenient fact or two. Therefore you have to pick and choose what to follow and what to allow. Most of us don't have time to do this, so we end up discarding all news as irrelevant. 'It happened, but did it really happen?' Everyone, including news organizations, are limited by their point of view, but in my life I don't recall news that's so blatantly biased as that in the present generation. What's different now is that there doesn't seem to be any attempt to get at the basic facts--only the facts that support a point of view. At least that's the way it is here in the USA.

    Hello Mr Antonio,
    What rating do you think is 'respectable' for people who can't afford to invest much time on chess-theory studies?
    And thank you for providing us with great content.

      I am no Antonio but I would guess that if you simply dont blunder a lot and know how to play active you can easily get up to a 1600 maybe 1700 without opening skills.

      No chance to get 2200 without theory studies.
