Yes, he really plays that 5-neck. Just saw them live in September and even at 70+ years old Rick strapped that thing on and played it. You can see it much better in the official video for their song She’s Tight. And yes, Robin Zander is an incredible singer and he still is at age 69, too. He still hits the high notes on this song live. He killed it on everything when I just saw them. VERY underrated rock vocalist.
Man, LUCKEEE! I fell in love with Cheap Trick (and Robin!) in the early 80's and never fell out of love. But also never managed to see them in concert.
I've seen Cheap Trick at least 6 times. They don't miss a beat, play a super long set, and most importantly, they still jam just like they used to. They perform as if the stage is their home. I don't know many other bands with their longevity and the high number of their fans young and old.
Yup, I've held that guitar before one of their shows I worked (I had a career in tour and venue security so I've met these guys several times as I worked their shows more times than I can count) and it weighs a freaking ton. But you're right, Rick still plays it live.
When I was a young man, I went through a breakup with a girl I deeply loved. This was literally the first song I heard while sitting in my car crying my eyes out and it ripped my heart out. I spent a while healing from losing my first love, but all these years later, the pain is gone. I’m happily married to a fantastic woman that God sent to me right when it was time. Years of happiness and 4 great children later, I can listen to this song with a smile on my face. If you’re dealing with a broken heart, hang in there, it will get better!!❤❤
This song is set apart from all the rest of their stuff and came so much later. I lost my best friend/ex fiance to suicide and it just ripped a hole right through me. And just when I thought I was doing better, they played this on VH1 and I lost my mind all over again because every word just. All these years later, the song fills me with such warmth, and makes me feel connected to him as if he was sending me a little message of "I'm not gone, you just can't see me, but I'll always be here for you."
In the early 90's, when this song was getting a lot of airplay, I and my co-worker were sitting in my office at work. I was playing the radio and this song was playing. A teen girl that also worked in the building, ran into my office and said "I love this song, sooo much. Who's the group?" When I replied "Cheap Trick" she said "I'm going to buy all of their records" and ran out of the office. When she was gone, my co-worker asked "Don't you think that's unreasonable?" I answered "Not at all."
power ballads fullfilled the radio in late eighties. Songs like Heaven from Warrant, home sweet home from Poison, High enough, when the children cry from White lion and many other. i recommend you any of these.
For the most part, I’d agree. But there are a few exceptions. Hello There, Clock Strikes Ten & Come On Come On are definitely better off In Color, than from At Budokan, while I Want You to Want Me, their signature song, is miles better than the studio version. Remember Hotel California has at least 4 guitars to play it. Everyone except Don Henley plays that song. While Don Henley plays drums. Saw Cheap Trick in concert years ago. Still one of my favorites
The reason for multiple neck guitars is simple. Each neck is set to a different tuning, allowing the guitarist to cover a broader audio spectrum with only one instrument instead of switching out guitars as needed. Cheap Trick, especially this song, brings back so many great memories of my teens. Truly a great band!
This song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America in the Summer of 1988!!! Awesome memories of being a teen in the 1980s!!! Such a great power rock ballad!!

Rock N Roll Hall of Famer's Cheap Trick... Went to their concert many years ago and they tossed copies of their album to the audience like a frisbee!!! Love that Robin Zander.
You know, I had my mind blown once sometime in the 90's I was driving by a bar in western Maryland somewhere once and saw on the sign, "Cheap Trick". I couldn't believe they weren't shown more love than that because they shouldn't have been playing that venue after being such a big band (at least in my opinion). 40 years and still gives me chills up my spine when I hear this song. So many memories going through my mind good and bad from my past. Can't find another song that I have ever heard that does that. It's powerful and it's deep and until you've lived you just can't connect with it. 😢❤️🎸🙂👍
ZZ Top was technically the first tour I ever saw but Cheap Trick opened for them so they are the first major rock band I've ever seen. I saw them again years later at a little band shell near the river. Both times they were fantastic. A big part of my high school soundtrack.
Thank you! I grew up listening to Cheap Trick (My Stepdad's favorite band). I will never forget when I lived out of state and my Mother was at their concert and called me during this song and sang these words to me "Wherever you go I'll be with you. Whatever you want I'll give it to you" my Mom passed in 2019 and the chorus of this song was on her memorial card. My Mom will always be my flame..... The live version of this song with Robin Zander's vocals will bring you chills. I also like Ghost Town which is a slower song.
Yes, Rick actually plays every one of that 5 necked guitar. I know this because my cousin Dave Wilmer (RIP) was his guitar tech for many, many years! They are fom my hometown of Rockford, Illinois and I knew a lot about them and have seen them a few times as well. P.S. my cousin did say that he hated tuning that guitar though!!
Very apropos of Jay wearing a White Sox cap, since Cheap Trick hail from Illinois. This song showed Cheap Trick could rock a power ballad as well as anyone else in modern rock; Robin Zander's vocals absolutely soar on this.
Probably Robin Zander's most dynamic and powerful vocal performance since "Mandocello." One thing about bands formed in the 1970's is that their albums had rockers and ballads.
Thank you for doing a reaction for this song. I absolutely love this song. This is one of those songs that take me back to one specific time in my life and anytime I hear it, I remember back to those days. Pure nostalgia.
I've seen them in concert 3 times and yes he plays all 5 of the guitars. Robin Zander the lead singer lives only a couple of miles from me and he will stop and talk with anyone who recognizes him and take pictures with them. He came into a bar we were in one night and sat and drank a picture of beer with us and told us some old stories of them on the road. A really down to earth kind of guy.
My ex gf met the band back around 85. Her friend was doing a story on them for their college newspaper at WSU. She said they were very nice. RIP Carlita.
Yes!!!!! Cheap Trick is one of my favorite bands from the 80's. They are awesome, i saw them once in a small club in the 90s and they put on a great show!
You guys actually came across one of their songs in Top Gun called "Mighty Wings". It's played at the end credits and an instrumental version during the dogfight training between Maverick & Jester.
So much to say, until now the only songs you ;listened to were their 1st two hits from the late 70's. and honestly I was afraid you were not going to go further. BUT this is an actual Hall of Fame group -- who STILL is out playing and recording new albums! The lead singer Robin Zander is considered by many one of the best singers of all time AND he Still sings THIS song regularly at close to 70 years old! They have such a diverse catalogue of music that it truly is a rabbit hole you could dive down and truly get lost. AND JAY YES he (Rick Nielson - their lead guitarist)plays all 5 parts of the guitar you saw.. I have seen it many times .. BUT the guitar is so heavy he only plays it once a show! AND ALL those weird guitars you see are him .. he switches guitars SO much during a show it's hard to keep up!
Robin Zander is the singer, what a voice. Cheap Trick are amazing, been a fan ever since hearing "at budokan" in 1979. The Flame is great, CT have an amazing catalogue of songs.
Can you honestly tell me you forgot? Forgot the magnetism of Robin Zander, or the charisma of Rick Nielsen? (Mike Damone -Fast Times at Ridgemont High)
Boy does this song bring back memories. Seeing Cheap Trick live in concert in Cedar Rapids, Iowa around 1985 was one of my first concerts. Guys were making out with their girl friends during this song, lighters in the air (not cel phones). I wish I could live those times all over again. There was so much great music back then.
The first time I heard this song was on MTV at a friend's house in 1988. It became a #1 hit. My older sister was on her honeymoon. When they got back, I mentioned the song. She said they both heard it on their honeymoon & also loved it. 🙂
Deep catalogue here. So glad you are featuring my home state, Illinois, bands tonight. I did see CT twice in the early 80s. The first time was in 1980 on the Dream Police tour with The Romantics opening. Robin Zander is a great lead singer.

Everyone should own a greatest hits compilation from Cheap Trick. They are a great vibe!
Power ballads paid the bills for these bands in the ‘80s.
Robin Zander = one of the greatest power pop signers in music history. What a voice.
I don't see too many requests for *gonna raise hell* great beat and vibe from their 1979 record, plus amazing vocal feats by singer Robin
Honestly, my favorite Cheap Trick song
40 years and still gives me chills up my spine when I hear this song. So many memories going through my mind good and bad from my past. Can't find another song that I have ever heard that does that. It's powerful and it's deep and until you've lived you just can't connect with it. 😢❤️🎸🙂👍
ZZ Top was technically the first tour I ever saw but Cheap Trick opened for them so they are the first major rock band I've ever seen. I saw them again years later at a little band shell near the river. Both times they were fantastic. A big part of my high school soundtrack.
I met Robin Zander in 1985. Such a nice guy.
I'm from Winnebago ! Small world
Definitely my favorite Cheap Trick. Gotta love 80s Power Ballads!
This is how I came to know cheap trick! Classic 80s Rock Ballad 🤘😜
this is one of my favorite bands and getting to see them in concert was a dream come true!
Love this song, back to my teenage years
It doesn't get more Power Ballad than THIS Power Ballad!
Very apropos of Jay wearing a White Sox cap, since Cheap Trick hail from Illinois.
This song showed Cheap Trick could rock a power ballad as well as anyone else in modern rock; Robin Zander's vocals absolutely soar on this.
Cheap Trick is one of the greatest bands ever, imho.
Underrated is an understatement.
This has always been a favorite of mine.
Saw them in concert back in the early 80s. Loved them.
RENENAGDE From the 70s Rocks .. Please give it a reaction Rob Squad . Love them 70s Amber
Cheap Trick was one of the most fun concerts I have ever seen. The opening act was Molly Hatchet. It had to be 83 or 84.
First band I saw live in 1979.
They had me from “Surrender”.
Left a lasting impression, I’m a huge fan.
I love this song. Gives me chills. Such memories!❤
summer of 88
@@bb-gc2tx yes!
Probably my favorite Cheap Trick song.
I wish it had been the live version. THAT show just blew the audience away.
there are a few videos on RUclips where Rick shows off his massive guitar collection
One of the best live bands of their generation.
Fun fact: Kid Rock inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
That's disappointing to learn, they should have had a real musician induct them
I didn't even know that
Saw Kid Rock live! Was no fan until then!
Oh man do I have some great memories of when this song came out. I do remember that this was their only #1 hit. I loved them all though
J & Amber, you'll love their "I Want You to Want Me" and "California Man"!!!
edit- Robin Zander on lead vocals.
Great album! All great songs
Married to my husband for over 30 years this is our song and was played during our first dance in 1990. Never get tired of hearing it.
Robin has one of the greatest voices in rock. Check it out LIVE!
I lived in Cedar Rapids around that time, lol! Wasn't at this concert, unfortunately.
Check out Robert Zander's vocals in the song "Gonna Raise Hell" . They are more of a hard rock or metal sound to him.
Great tune and the most mellow they ever did. Surrender and I Want You to Want Me are their most popular and best!
Joe Perry's fav band! I saw them open for Aerosmith once ...it was a great show !!
I saw them live. A great band to see live.
Yes he plays all of the different necks and tunings on that guitar...
Amazing band to see live
This is my all time favorite Cheap Trick song💜 From my understanding they almost passed up doing this song and I'm so thankful they decided to do it. Robin's voice and the lyrics are so beautiful 💜
all hail the man with a thousand voices, Robin Zander!!
