    They leave fully rendered cities in the far distance, but aparently Gwynevere's ass is too heavy for the game to handle it.

    • @Castodas
      @Castodas 5 лет назад +350

      Well, after the first guy who tried to render it went blind in the process; they decided it was too big of a risk to present to the public.

    • @Jamie-tx7pn
      @Jamie-tx7pn 4 года назад +128

      Those cities probably take less effort than most people know. Low-poly, copy-pasted assets and simple shapes with a simple UV unwrap and a low-quality texture slapped on. If you look, you can see some buildings that come up later, and if you really look, you can see some very basic, low-poly shapes, such as a slope atop a cube.
      Heck, they may not have even had to place them by hand -- 3d modelling programs have features that allow you to instantly place hundreds (/thousands/millions) of objects in a "particle system" with random rotation and such. Basically, you take some assets, put them into a group together, and then make a particle system on a plane. Boom, low-poly city. Obviously not discounting their work, just shedding some light here.
      The missing back half of Gwynevere, if I had to guess, is from something called backface culling. In normal play, some things a player will NEVER be able to see, so it's just a waste of resources to render them. And the back-half of a large, very-high-poly model probably frees up a LOT of memory.

      One has to wonder would Lost Izalith be more "complete" at least in visual terms if the effort was spent there rather than background of Anor Londo, Village away from Firelink, etc.

    • @Wheel_of_Kain
      @Wheel_of_Kain 7 лет назад +127

      ***** Well it's a common knowlege that the PC version was an absolutly unoptimized mess and performs poorly even now on some 2016 machines. But I distinctly remember people complaining about framerate drops in certain areas in consoles back in 2011.

    • @Wheel_of_Kain
      @Wheel_of_Kain 7 лет назад +35

      ***** To the first part of your comment: it's well known that it was just slapped on PC marked because people demanded it, yeah. Doesn't make OP wrong though. His point was that From didn't seem to use the tricks devs usually use to keep performance up while still maintaining an illusion of stuff in the background.
      As for the second part: I didn't know that there was an older and newer version of 360 and PS3, so maybe you're right.
      And trust me, you would probably notice the difference between 60, 30 and less fps :P

    • @AluminumHaste

      There's a lot of that in souls games. Love it. Like at the top of sens fortress, you look over and can see the top of the church that you fought the bell gargoyles at. Or especially in ds3 after you beat vordt of the boreal valley, you go to the ledge you need a banner for, and you can see farron keep, undead settlement, and as i recall, the cathedral of the deep lol. Also in ds3, at the anor lando bonfire at the bottom of the long steps, look over the edge and you'll see the boreal valley and Pontif Sullivan's boss entrance and vice versa. Dark souls does this a lot and I love it. Gives you this weird feeling inside, and also a sense of how far you've come.

    It was one of the great magic things about Dark Souls, everything didn't just seem consistent. It was consistent. With the scale and all being fully rendered as you play. It was something that Dark Souls 2 hugely lacked... That the world wasn't consistent with its own design. When you saw something it wasn't as it was when you went there. It didn't have that same impact. Dark Souls really captured something genuine with its design and philosophy.

    I was also not aware that the backgrounds were actually 3d-rendered! When you think about the fact that the game wasn't 100% finished on release and the fact that the game has some performance issues on both console and PC, I think it's pretty clear why this isn't so common in the gaming industry.
    Nevertheless, one of my favorite games of all times and I'm glad I'm still learning new things!
    PS: I was surprised you didn't find anything interesting in The Depths/ Blighttown, but when I think about it you can actually reach most of those areas by foot, so I guess it's not really boundary breaky.

  • @ManiaMac1613

    As much as I love Dark Souls it always felt like an incomplete game. I think the reason there are so many fully rendered 3-D backgrounds is because the developers wanted the game to be even larger than the one we're already familiar with but didn't have time to flesh it all out. This is especially apparent in Lost Izalith, which has so many missing elements to it it really sucks the fun out of exploring it.
    I hope they one day they do a remastered edition of Dark Souls and we get the game Miyazaki originally envisioned.

      Another one is Destiny. The Vault of Glass has some massive unused areas (haven't played in a while, maybe some have been put to use). There are lengthy alternate routes through the structure, some of which can be seen in RUclips videos. There are even deep cave systems that require you to climb up and into the massive towers around the Templar boss arena, haven't seen those in videos personally, but they're very extensive. There's so much and they are so strangely structured and awkward to navigate that it feels like they might have been algorithmically designed, which seems a very strange choice for a non-rougelike, but I'm not a level designer so I have no idea.

    the reason for dark souls backgrounds to be so detailed is that miyazaki takes to heart showing the geography of the world, if you go in dark souls and go to the tower on firelink shrine, you'll be able to see pretty much every other area in the game, and everything is exactly where it should be in theory.
    in fact, there's even demo areas of the undead settlement and lothric high wall in some of the backgrounds, guess they put them there for ease of modeling.

    Build to scale is not hard to do.... My credentials, I am a 3D artist. With modo ( the software I use ) there is a ruler tool, you can set it to feet, meters etc. You can use it to make it to scale. With say models like the above you can get a rough estimate of size based on real world objects, and of course you just make the doorway the typical height and done. With other buildings you saw, that is mostly like a repeated texture would work. As in you make a group of buildings per se, then you copy and paste them randomly throughout just try to make it not seem as if they are the same, apply differing rotations, and such. If you put a group of say 5 people on this you could have such a thing with no issues at all (with no collision, just texture no bump etc this would take a week, maybe a little more to do). Of course with a city you have to make it seem as such so scattering has to be aligned instead of just purely scattered. Still not hard to do sounds fun really. I think I need to practice it a little. Got to make sure your skills are varied.
    Seeing the animations at the beginning of these I am pretty sure you know about this though so I might as well be speaking to myself, hi there me.

      He may not. I make the animated intros for Shesez.

      My bad, also nice work. Maybe give him a small tour on some of your work (and the 3D world) so he understands things a little better. Just a thought is all.

      Building everything to scale wasn't the amazing part. It's the fact that they did all that and still managed a fairly stable, well running game. Most games have to pull of various bits of trickery just to keep the frame rates slightly steady.

      Darksouls is not stable and well running. Not even close. Still a good game, but optimization is one of its flaws.

      Lawrence Granroth DSFix at least solves that issue for the most part.

    Now I finally can understand why Priscilla is so fluffy, seriously this dragon is so fluffy, so much fluff.
