- After a two year hiatus from competition, "Wheelie King" Brian Ambrosini took his place again on the throne of Byron Dragway's Power Wheelstand Championships.
The win did not come without stiff competion. Chris Pearce was the early favoritewhen he carried his "Chinto" Pinto to a 500' Round 1 pass. And when three time Champion Jason Schubert took his show quality 1978 Olds Cutlass over the wall at 800' in Round 2 , it looked to be anyone but Ambrosini.
Following clean-up of the Schubert carnage, the orange Gremlin came to the line as Byron's Ron Leek brought the capacity crowd to its feet.
Amrosini immediately stood the Gremlin on its bumper, but just as it began to drop by 400', he was back on the throttle and carried through to 885'.
With a borrowed wheel and tire on the left front, Brian Ambrosini and his family accepted the $10,000 check and a stunning trophy in the Byron Dragway Winners Circle.

That shot is awesome!!!!! I've been going there for years and was at the show that day. If i could come up with the funding I'd buy the Military to defend this track and it's heritage. This is THEEE best place to take family and friends (and new prospect gear heads) to get a true life experience of flat out racing. The power of this facility is unstoppable. And that ain't shit talking it's the truth. If you ever get a chance go for it. You will have a great time. Later

I'm from Illinois and got my license in 1980. I'll always remember my friends and I had nice fairly stock muscle cars. But in the late Spring, through Summer, the really fast, badass cars came out. That's because the real drag racers we're working on their cars during the harsh Winters. The firemen in my town had the best ones.

Think I saw a couple versions of "The Little Red Wagon". Was like a older van/pickup with a blown motor in the bed. "Hemi Under Glass" was a crowd pleaser. But one wheel stander was putting out so many sparks (intentionally), he caught the top end of the race track on fire, their was so much oil Down on the grass at US 30 Dragstrip.
Man! First time I've seen someone bounce a car between the rear bumper and slicks at will. He was toying with it.

What are the rules of this competition? A purpose built wheelie car could run the whole track on it's rear bumper. What prevents someone building and running something that has 200lb on the front axle?

The Olds was going to win on distance, but he drifted off the side of the track and hit the wall. It looked to me like he was going to go the whole 1320'. I wondered why he didn't set it back down when he started going off to the side, but maybe he couldn't see down the track while he was in the wheelie. Purpose-built wheelstanders like the Hemi Under Glass or the Lil Red Truck had windows in the floors and individual wheel brakes on the rear axle so they could see and steer down the track. They were also built with a heavy rear weight bias with the engine in the rear so they were easy to get into a wheelie.
The Olds' radio wasn't working, so he couldn't hear his crew telling him to back off.
With so much torque, how do they keep the frame from twisting and distributing the power to one rear tire?
Locked differential. Both tires spin at the same time always. Very strong frames and roll cages welded to the frames
