@@doctorderpage2848 I was going to say this, lol. as someone that knows both of them Madonna is incredibly introverted to the point she really doesn't like people in general, don't personalize it. You knew Madonna entered the club because she had a human wall around her to keep the peasants away, and that might sound negative but just accept it for what it is. Cyndi on the other hand is the cheerleader you want in your corner. Cyndi to me is the personification of a happy old person is a work of art, but she has always been her own work of art.

The rivalry between Madonna and Cyndi Lauper never really existed outside of the media. It’s kind of sad that women need to be pitted against each other in that way. I still remember at the time you were expected to like one or the other, and I liked both.

The media always does that .. Michael Jackson vs Prince, Britney Spears vs Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys vs Nsync .. etc .. it was their way of selling magazines like Teen Beat, Tiger Beat which included posters and interviews 😂😂😂 Meanwhile, in reality all these stars respected each other and no rivalry existed 😂😂

Let's see- Cyndi has one of the most powerful and versatile voices in the history of music. She has won an emmy, tony, grammys, is in the songwriters hall of fame. Ssu album is now in the library hall of congress as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. She just had a ceremony for her handprints/footprints imbedded in cement at TLC, Grauman's chinese theatre last week and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has had an amazing enduring career. And now she's finishing writing the musical score for Working Girl...for broadway 2025/26. Not too shabby

I was ten when Madonna and Cyndi Lauper both burst onto the scene. I loved them both. They both had their own thing going. Never saw them as the same at all. Don’t know where that came from. I don’t recall any rivalry being mentioned in the 80’s. We didn’t have social media or any of that so maybe that’s why. Could careless too.

Cyndi Lauper is the talented one. She can sing, she can write incredible songs, she can arrange her own music. All around Cyndi was always ahead of a lot of the other singers around.
You didnt watch what david foster said about madonna. He thought that madonna was just a pretty face and a hot body but he didnt expect how talented and professional madonna is. He said she was really much involved in writing, producing, recording, arranging, etc. His respect for madonna went to a higher level.

Not to pretend that female artists didn't face sexism (they obviously did), but male artists were also pitted against each other all the time during the 80s, yet no-one ever played the "sexism" card... I mean, endless teen magazine covers featured headlines such as "Duran Duran vs A-Ha !" "Michael Jackson vs Boy George !", "Prince vs Michael Jackson !"...And every Canadian growing up in the 80s is quite familiar with the "Corey Hart VS Bryan Adams !" variant of this issue ! lol ! It was a competitive era, it's the nature of the music business. Not EVERYTHING in life is about sexism and discrimination, you know...
Cuz the music world has always been dominated by men, so it’s dumb to put male against male… There’s too many!! Too many bands, too many solo artists, too many boy bands…it’s pointless to highlight “gender rivalry” when obviously they will compete for the market. Females were rare as super stars. Hardly a handful in the 60’s and 70’s and always below the males’s success. The 80’s changed that. A female solo artist could headline her own concert in a stadium ( Tina Turner in Rio for example)…alone. Her name alone was enough. That never happened before. Not in Rock music. So when Cyndi and Madonna came out almost at same time ( Cyndi came first), the styles, the hairs, the accessories, etc were very similar and a rivalry started…by media. If by then TONS of super star-female singers were around ( like now: Adele, lady Gaga, Kathy Perry, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, etc) I doubt such rivalry woulda take place. But it was the 80’s… first decade with female power in music. The media was just beginning to learn how to deal with solo female super stars. Sad because they both were great and very different…
Yeah I’m personally tired of artists blaming bad behavior on the press or society. Everyone is responsible for their own behavior. There have been stories about Madonna for decades now. Cher also had negative experiences with her. I don’t think Lauper or Cher are the types to instigate drama like that and it’s always Madonna. She needs a diagnosis.

First off... Cyndi looks phenomenal for almost 71. She has never hated on Madonna.. she isn't like that. They were pitted against another because they were the two female pop stars who ruled the charts. Janet is #3 but she really didn't hit it huge until 1986. Whitney too.
Cyndi was ,and is , the relatable legend for the misunderstood and shy kids. I have a feeling Madonna respects her now even though she poked fun at her expense decades ago.

Cyndi and Miss M burst on the scene and were neck and neck there for a while, then Madonna just craved and got more attention any way she could. Cyndi made her mark, and really had quite a singing range. She has nothing to prove now .
Cyndi , is an artist, with a unique vision, a great conposer and a great singer Madonna , sold controversy! No comparison!
Both had great songs, loved them both. You can't beat the 80s. I'd say Borderline was my favorite by Madonna and Time After Time by Cyndi. Loved both videos.
@@Katherine24246 well, I agree, I do like the earlier Madonna( in particular, borderline), but then she focused on dance/ controversy/ shock factor. And she certainly can't sing like Cyndi!
Both were talented but I agree Cyndi was a better vocalist while Madonna ultimately surpassed her in hits and longevity. They were just two different types of artists. Madonna was super ambitious, wanted to be number one, and was willing to do whatever she thought would take her there and keep her there. It certainly worked for her. Thing is, I don't think either of them have any regrets, they did it their way and made timeless music in the process.

I don't think Madonna did not necessarily like Cyndi - it was the hype of the media. Madonna, self-admittedly, was caught up in her own fame and persona at that time. She probably did not give it a second thought. But I think both women have much respect for each other and I would love to see some mutual kudos.

Madonna was no where close to being as good a singer and lyricist as Cyndi Lauper. There really was no competition. Same with Debbie Harry, Madonna never came close to having the cool and the charisma of Debbie.
Madonna knew how to sell her product and then use her new found wealth to pay others with artistry and talent to make her look and sound better than she actually was.

I'm a HUGE fan and admirer of both of them and have always said they are the equivalent to Britney and Xtina from 80's: Madonna was a better dancer and had an amazing marketing team behind her, like Britney did. Cyndi and Xtina are amazing singers/vocalists and talked topics people was affraid of. Love them all.
Dismissing Madonna as just having a better marketing team is such a fake narrative...Madonna is clearly the superior songwriter/producer of the two(live to tell, like a prayer, express yourself, vogue, isla bonita, into the groove, etc...Cyndi is mainly known for singing a cover from the 70s...Madonna literally changed the culture with her songs/videos and the topics she dealt with esp in the 80s and 90s

Britney's marketing might have been better but how they treated her wasnt, also britney and xtina have the same voice but brit's label wanted a popstar not a vocalist so they teached her how to sing in a baby voice

Madonna did like Cyndi but was probably not sure in return if Cyndi liked her as they had others constantly making up quotes and stories about each other but it never was a rivalry like Gaga wanted. And that in itself was over quickly but the overall pitting lasted years due to fans who ruined it for fans of both. Dumb way to take it
Knowing both of them they are very different people, Cyndi is what you see, she is very transparent. Madonna is very introverted, and people don't get that, its very hard to gauge her, people that think they know her really don't know her at all. .
Don't forget Madonna making fun of Cyndi on the Who's That Girl Tour in 87. It was so obvious.
