      @TheBlazingWolfe: Also 8 or 9 orders of magnitude is multiplying by 10 to the 8th or 9th power. So your aliens underestimated the human population by a factor of 100,000,000 or 1,000,000,000 people. There were a hundred million to a billion *TIMES* more humans than they originally thought?
      If they estimate 200 billion people now, the aliens must have originally thought there were 200 to 2000 people.
      Also, let’s assume, like your aliens did, that there are only 1 billion people per planet. There would be at most 200 planets with humans on it. (Not nearly enough to cover a single galaxy) But we know that was a huge underestimate and there are far fewer human planets than that. How does that make humans a multi galaxy species?
      Overall, I liked your story very much, but these details really pulled me out of the story.

      @@TheBlazingWolfie Sorry Wolfie, but I disagree. Inaccuracy is inaccuracy. Scientists wouldn't mix galaxy and star system or cluster. Generals are unlikely to as well since it would be like mistaking a small valley for an impassable crevasse. Politicians, yeah, every day of the week, but not people whose job it is. (Footnote: I will concede that generals at the "joint chiefs" level are more politician than military, but that's my opinion).

      From what I've seen from HFY, and history, if they violate the rules of war, we will too.
      In WWII, the Japanese refused to grant human rights to POWs and had a shoot-on-sight order for medics. The US responded by becoming less than charitable to the Japanese POWs and medics in return.

    "Nine orders of magnitude" from one billion is a quintillion. Not 900 billion.

    • @Dekatelon
      @Dekatelon 4 месяца назад +4

      An order of magnitude is defined by convention (in our case usually denoted from the amount of fingers we have). For all we know, the alien equivalent could very well be 1.3

    • @dadudeme
      @dadudeme Месяц назад +2

      @@Dekatelon considering no specific number system is mentioned, I would assume the author had the aliens use the decimal system, this means an order of magnitude is 10x more than the previous one.

  • @leyrua

    Demanding answers from someone who cannot give you an accurate estimate is a good way to end up with numbers pulled out of someone's nether region.
    I just had a project like that myself. The customer demanded to know how long before their project was completed, and we had to keep telling them: "That's not up to MY team. Why don't you ask the vendor, who has repeatedly failed to deliver the materials we need to get STARTED?"

    • @elmateo77
      @elmateo77 3 месяца назад

      Yeah the numbers he gave were WAYYYY off. 200 billion would be like 30 earth sized planets. An intergalactic civilization would likely have a population in at least the quadrillions (a million billions).

  • @elmateo77
    @elmateo77 3 месяца назад +3

    A population of 200 billion for an intergalactic empire would be absolutely minuscule, that's 30 planets with a slightly higher population than earth. It would probably be millions of times that, with the ability to field billions of ships (although it would likely be involved in many conflicts at once so they wouldn't all be fighting one enemy).

      orders of magnitude can be either 2 or 10, tho most often 10 outside of computer science. that said, the math, while Closer, would still be quite off.

    • @rosstully5960
      @rosstully5960 5 месяцев назад +1

      Theoretically if the aliens used a number system other than base 10 their orders of magnitude could be different?

    • @peterhacke6317
      @peterhacke6317 5 месяцев назад +1

      I mean we are talking about aliens, so if we assume not every standard and unit has been converted we can get some wacky stuff going. Orders of magnitude basically means shifting the entire number by a digit. Which is 10 in our human standard base-10 (decimal) system. If we instead use the lowest base system, base-2 (binary), each order of magnitude would be a factor 2. Meaning 8 orders of magnitude would translate to a mere 256 in our standard decimal system.

      @@TheBlazingWolfie Then again, you went from total population to what could be send into war. About 200 billion soldier and sailors is a lot. Still on the low side when dominating several galaxies.

  • @joimumu

    If we are travelling between galaxies then we would have around 200.000 planets and 5.000.000.000 people per planet

    • @peterhacke6317
      @peterhacke6317 5 месяцев назад +3

      And that's while limiting it to semi-habitable planets. If you strip mine the uninhabitable planets and build habitats from all that material you could raise that number by... several orders of magnitude.
