As a single mom - no father, not a coparent - who also owns my own small business, I never thought I could homeschool. But then Covid hit. It was either shut down my business and go on welfare to supervise my kid online, or homeschool him. So glad I chose the latter.

I'm a single mom, my son's father passed away in 2019 right before Covid... my son was in 1st grade and his school only shut down for a few months in and was back the next year, but we loved the slowed down and personalized teaching that I got to choose for him. He went back the next year, but my son was bored. He kept flaking off. The teachers asked for him to be tested... again... and again, and every test said the same thing.. he was bored... finally in 3rd grade they told me to find him someone who would put my son on drugs... that's when I said I was done.... I rearraigned my work. I started creating my own curriculum and started teaching other homeschoolers on-line with OutSchool and we haven't looked back. I highly recommend it to everyone!

@@Strongboymom Your child being bored in the classroom is a sign that he has a far higher capacity for learning than average. Very few schools have programs in place to properly challenge such children. You made the right decision.

48:30 "You don't have to use curriculum" AMEN! I'm almost done with homeschooling and have purchased VERY little curriculum. Until college level, the resources I used were almost all free. For several years, I was spending less on my annual homeschool costs than family members were spending *just* to buy the supplies required by "free" public schools at the beginning of the year.

When we decided to homeschool I quit my part time job, dropped out of college as an A honor roll student and my husband started working 60+ hours a week, we gave up the car loans for a cheap mini van and anytime we were low on money and couldn't afford the nice curriculum and homeschool outings I took odd jobs cleaning or organizing people's homes. I would still work harder than that because of how rewarding it is to guarantee my children have a good education and strong start to their lives so that they are not stuck in a crappy school situation with horrible bullying like I was. If you think it's not possible then think again! The reward is far greater than the sacrifice.

I don’t want public funding to be connected to homeschooling. Horrible idea! Once the government holds the purse strings it will impose standards and all sorts of requirements to keep the money with your child. No way!

My father worked double time as much as he could for twenty years to pay for our private religious school education, and also paid the taxes to pay for other's public education. Would it be possible to give such parents a tax break? YES YOU CAN. Move on to a boat and get off the coast and pay as few taxes as possible. No services, few taxes.

My children were homeschooled. We planned to homeschool several years before having children. On Thursday evenings we held a family forum in which any topic was open for discussion. The only rules were common courtesies. We also gave our children the right to choose between 3 forms of higher education, University, Trade school or apprenticeship. Funny thing is they chose a combination of all three. In doing so, they all have qualifications for a variety of careers. Our son chose law enforcement or military but could not pass the physical for either, he has very flat feet. So he chose Political Science and IT, Electrician, Leather Design and Tooling and Martial Arts teacher. Our youngest daughter chose Business Management and Accounting, Seamstress and a Florist. Our oldest daughter chose Business Management, a Bilingual Tutor and Singing for special occasions. BTW, my husband was (Air Force, deceased) a Missionary Baptist preacher and I am a Jewish person who became a Baptist.

Do it! I know it’s easier said than done, but I completely understand. My 10yr old is struggling with reading, she’s a solid grade behind. She would’ve been left behind or pushed ahead in public school, whereas with homeschooling we can move along at her speed, making sure she’s grasping the topics.
Now my 7yr old (who never went to public school) is a solid 1.5 grade levels ahead. She hates coloring, so I don’t make her. She would’ve been soooo bored in school.

My husband and I had this discussion when we were dating. That I would stay home and that I would homeschool our someday kids. Those were his nonnegotiables. For once I found someone that agreed with me!
Many people just don’t want to sacrifice the new clothes, the awesome vacations, concerts, restaurants, etc. We are very poor because of that choice, but in my mind, it’s SO worth it! Our now baby girl will not be coached to love government, hate her parents, embrace victimhood, use a litter box in the bathroom where a boy can walk in, and not learn math or history. No thanks!

Previously homeschooled adult here. I would love to chat with you about my experience, my work now in a public elementary school, and my current college experience toward my BA in teaching.
The anti-homeschool rhetoric is really rampant right now because homeschooling is growing, and people realize they can't control us.
I heard a good one just today (I haven't watched the video yet, so I don't know if you cover it). It was a homeschool mom responding to the comment that it wasn't fair that homeschool moms can just give their kids a 4.0 GPA for college admissions. The woman was answering the question, but the comments under the reel were atrocious! There's so much more to college admissions than just high school GPA! Remedial courses, gen eds, and the SAT exist for a reason. Community colleges are accessible to all, and larger colleges are looking at so many things besides grades. Even if ALL homeschool families gave their kids a 4.0 on their high school transcript, (they don't) that really wouldn't get them very far at all.

There are groups of homeschooling methods and they meet up once a week at the least so there is your socialization. As a homeschooled kid. I loved the self pace. 1 hour for english, one hour for science..... I spent 15 minutes in english and 2 hours in science because I loved English and hated science so I needed more time in one to understand it, I didn't get that in brick and mortar school.

I am a homeschool parent. I will never send my kiddo to public school. What irks me lately though is the politicalization of school choice. It's turning off alot of families who may otherwise be encouraged to homeschool. I am not on the "right" or the "left". I am not religious at all. I know I can make sure my kiddo gets a better education than she would in public school, she won't be exposed to some things I don't want her to, she won't be bullied, she won't go through active shooter drills, her education will not be interrupted by violent kids every day, she gets to do what interests her. I don't even like the word "homeschool" anymore. People seem to think that means a kid sits at home, at a desk, with mom lecturing them all day. It isn't like that. My kiddo currently does things through 5 different online programs, 2 are live classes each week, and 3 are self paced. I get to pick and choose based on her interests, one program has a marine bio series she's doing, another has a vet science series, etc. She does a foreign language and I utilize local businesses that have employees that speak the language for her to practice with. She is volunteering at local animal shelter and clinic, so she is learning how to medicate animals right now. Hands on. She is working through a series of classes that will lead to her being eligible to attend an ecology camp in another country. She's almost 10. These experiences kids could never get in public school. All through history education was varied. The concept of kids sitting together in a classroom with only same aged peers is relatively new and I don't understand why people think it's the only way.

@@levierose484 We use Power Homeschool, Miaacademy, Time4Learning, Outschool, and Next Level Homeschool. I sort of pick by the class. I don't believe just one program or curriculum is best for a kid. Certainly not my kiddo. The math classes on Power Homeschool are great. I actually go through the math classes with my kiddo and relearn because they are so great. The foreign language classes are also great but very quick, so my kiddo does duolingo and we do workbooks as well. Miaacademy has social studies classes that are much more engaging than Power Homeschool. So we do those and Mia has Latin and ASL, which PH does not. Time4Learning has a communication class and art history classes that the other programs do not. She does vet science and zoology classes on Outschool and Marine Biology classes on Next Level Homeschool. Next Level Homeschool has some ancient history classes that my kiddo will start taking in the summer also. Remote Learning School is also great. My kiddo isn't currently doing any classes through them right now, but she will be again in a few months. My kiddo has also done 2 wildlife/ecosystem classes through our state online school and will do another class in the fall, they have a journalism class that I can't find anywhere else. I sort of use programs as needed not continually. If one program offers a class that other programs do not I will pay for the program just for the time we need the class and then unsubscribe until we use another class, if that makes sense. It is alot more planning for me than if I just used one program, but it works. I average about $300 a month also for all the classes my kiddo ends up taking. Homeschooling can also be dependent on what parents are willing to put in for work. For example, even though my kiddo is taking the marine biology course online the class is requiring students to use proper citations in all of their work. But the class doesn't teach them citations. So I have been working with my kiddo to show her how to use APA style citations. I always hated citations when I was in college lol. But I keep telling myself in no public school would a 9 year old be learning and using proper citations. She is getting way ahead homeschooling. As for money homeschooling can cost as little or as much as you want. If I just used Mia, PH, and T4L it would cost less than $100 a month. I can afford to do the other classes that add up to about $300 a month. Last year she took an evaluation to qualify for an online advanced math school and got accepted. It cost $500 a month. I could not do it. I couldn't justify $500 a month for just class. So it's whatever you can put into it.

All 5 of my children attended a church school. For the first 13 years it worked well for us. I did have to take 3 of them for help elsewhere to deal with learning disabilities and supplement with dinner discussions about what they were studying. But it all fell apart when my youngest was in 5th grade. I discovered that when he wasn’t moving he wasn’t learning. Homeschooling him, I could encourage him to wiggle all he wanted and run around the table between math problems. He could turn every history lesson into an art project. All that motion helped him remember more than sitting in a desk ever did. He is now a motivated 20 year old, 22:34 supporting himself and contributing to his community as a board member of a local performing arts nonprofit. I wish I had given my 4 older children the advantages of homeschooling 22:34 .

It always broke my heart to hear this at conferences. It also highlights the mentality of the parents as well that the learning stops after children leave the classroom when in reality most of the social learning that any child walks into my classroom is an extension of what they've already learned before they ever had me as a teacher.

What i put to the table is if my son does well in school or if he gets bullied i would pull him out and my worst fears came to be about him being bullied but it wasn't just bullied the kid that had an issue with him rallied up a group of other students to jump him. How can i combat that as a single father. My son didn't know who they are much less know if any was in his classes he is in 6th grade. tracking calories and exercises doesnt work for most people
just stop eating sugar, grains and seed oils, it will make you lose weight in case you are fat, stabilize if you are in your normal weight and gain healthy weight if you are underweight

I homeschool and co op so I was interested to see what you had to say. However your constant generalization if the left and democrats was a huge turn off. I am a Jesus loving left leaning mom who doesn't fit into every label you slapped onto a huge group of people. If you actually took the politics out of your conversation, your points would hold so much more value.

"Homeschooling" is extremely broad and consists of extremes from pure indoctrination and social isolation (very common btw), to secular homeschooling and very high community engagement (on the opposite extreme). Generalisations can be a little disrespectful imho.

I’ve also seen videos about “unschooling” where the 8 year old doesn’t know how to read. And there are really no standards or expectations. The environment and standards depend on how involved the parents are- how involved the community is. There are definitely extreme cases. But I’ve been talking with a group of moms with kids around my son’s age about building a “homeschool community.” And to me, that sounds ideal if you are going to homeschool.

Children learn best when they’re developmentally ready. Readiness isn’t the same for all children. The average age for reading readiness is 7 years old. Some are ready earlier and some take longer. Once a child is ready though, they will learn much quicker than a child who isn’t.
Unschooling is simply child led/interest led learning. We’re teaching them how to learn, rather than what or when to learn. The point is for the children to be autodidacts, who can learn anything that they need, when they need it.
