Wow, this video came out so quickly! Thank you so much for letting me join you in this video, Paul! 🙏🏼🎸🙏🏼🎸 Y’all are in for a treat when Paul shares his guitar secrets with me on my channel! I’ll start working on that video as soon as I get home!
Me, an American, watching a Philippino guitarist and Dutch guitarist jamming in a music shop in Germany, drinking a Belgian beer. We live in an amazing world.
I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and learned a lot from you Paul. But seeing this video surprised me as a Filipino because Perf is one of our inspiration and a real legend in our country. Sometimes I feel like that I’m losing the flame in my passion (cause of work) but I like how humble and hungry you are and inspires me to learn and love my music 💯
This is absolutely one of the best and most helpful breakdowns of the blues structure I've ever come across. Thanks so much to both of you. I really enjoy this channel and all the invaluable information you're sharing for free.
Couldn't agree more and I've been playing guitar longer than either of the guys have been alive lol. Love learning new stuff - you never stop learning your instrument :)
I got an old blues guitar book about 20 years ago, and it had that 'secret' of the blues in it. It took me years to fully appreciate how genius that simple concept is.
I’ve watched a scadzillion guitar videos. This was the most advanced-made-simple blues ever! I absolutely loved this video!!! Thanks both of you! I have enough stuff to mess around with for years.
Holy smokes, was this the best mini tutorial ever! I was expecting I'd watch this clip over coffee, but after Step 2 I *had* to grab the guitar and play along! Now my coffee is cold, I am happy to have learned a new thing, Perfecto has one new follower, and I'm off to practice it some more. Thanks!
Yes, I blame these two too for making my dinner cold and making the wife complain why I'm not eating with the family. These guys are unhealthy for the head, the body and relationship, LOL!
Yeah, similar! It's late evening and lots of neighbours in earshot, so I don't usually have my guitar out this late, but I coudn't resist. This kind of music sounds even more laid back played with quiet finger picking. Even if they can hear me it wouldn't be annoying anyway. Top Video thanks Paul Davids.
During the band explosion in the 90s in the philippines, Perf played in a band called Blues Trio, they were in my opinion the first band who played electric blues with a great guitarist named perf de castro. Perf is a rock guitarist who also played one of the best blues guitar in his generation. He also has a degree in music major in classical guitar.
@@Johnhasa1 Yeah dude, He's one of the best and most respected guitarist in the Philippines.😊..please listen to his former band Rivermaya, songs like "214" and "Awit ng Kabataan". or his Hendrix cover somewhere on RUclips. Cheers! 🤘
Seeing Paul pretending to be surprised by this music theory is so funny, at the same time, though, it shows how humble and respectful he is with his guest!
Thank you Paul and Perfecto for a great eye opener! I´ve never experienced a better logic explanation to "get it" ever. Not with words but within my mind/soul!
Brilliant, so every time the 3rd and 7th slip back a fret, the 7th becomes the 3rd and the 3rd becomes the 7th if applied to the cycle of 4ths. Awesome lesson, outlined impeccably, making the beauty of the blues so much more accessible, Fantastic lesson. Thanks
This was AWESOME! I love that it can be broken down so simply to the components 3rd and 7th without having to fly all over the place. The best part of the blues is those chromatic steps. They guide you and the listeners ear. It's predictable, but in the very best way.
As a guitarist being able to play the blues IMO is essential. Throughout the history of music, people have always played the blues in many forms - fast, medium, slow, funky, sophisticated in different meters and avant-garde. It's still the blues! Cool video thanks for keeping it going Paul!
This is one of the best "2 people that don't know each other that well" video. Very natural and humble, like you both were giving space to each other without sounding overly enthusiastic and talking over each other. Great, Thanks that was Perfecto! :P
I played with an older gentleman, he was in his 80's, who played an old 70's Ibanez like that. At first I thought he was playing a Gibson 335 or something because for some reason he had sharpied out the Ibanez logo on the head stock. You couldnt let that fool you though, he was one hell of a guitar player, he had grew up in AZ and moved to LA and played with all the great singers and bands in his younger days. When we would take a break from playing he would sit and just tell stories and stories of all the people he had played with, he was incredible.
First of all, holy bokeh on that first shot! What aperture setting was that?! ;) Excellent video, and great to see you with Perf. I'm looking forward to all the 42GS3 videos!
PERF!!!! This came out of nowhere, holyshhhhh. What's amazing about Perf is he can drop these high level knowledge not just in Blues, but in Classical, Folk, Rock, and Metal (shredding) as well.
Hey Paul, have you ever thought that one of the greats is watching your videos and actually learning something? Like Eric Gales or John Mayer? (I consider you one of the greats btw)
Picked my guitar up again after a few years of not playing. I feel like I'm 15 again learning from so many different places. You are single handedly making things click that never did before. Dunno if it's the way you articulate it or what, but it's great. Thanks for what you're doing here man for real.
That step 3 is also the secret to playing Hammond organ on blues while leaving lots of room for the guitarists to shred/wail/whatever. Just play that interval and fiddle with the Leslie speed and drawbars, and folks will think you're a keyboard genius. Provided you pay attention, listen, and fit in, of course.
It’s crazy i knew the A7, D7 and E7 chord shapes already, but never had it click that the shape of just the 3&4 strings is the same just a fret apart. Sometimes you can hear something 20 different ways until that 1 example makes the lightbulb go off.
Paul, I love that you can absolutely schredd the blues every day of the week, yet you still stop to learn the fundamentals and practice the basics. Even though I (and most of us im sure) have played a blues hundreds of times, this has given me the chance to slow down with you and learn the basics with you. Something I don't often do. For that I am grateful to you! Thank you for the great work, and keep it up!

My 87 year old jazz guitar instructor has one of those Ibanezes, with the action set obscenely low, that he uses to play out. It is a freaking great guitar for the money. Mind you, we both play his vintage Gibson ES-175s when I have a lesson. Anyway, great lesson. Thank you both for giving me something new as a rhythm player to practice.
I remember when I first bought my Philippine-made guitar. I asked Sir Perfecto on his channel and he replied. Much respect for this guy. P.S. The secret to the blues is to play from the heart. I remember my all-time favorite Lightning Hopkins. He plays the same old chords, and yet he always has something new and unexplainable emotion in each of his songs. That is because he is the blues, and the guitar is just an extension of himself. Be the Blues!
