  • 13 out of the last 17 prime ministers have been to Oxford University.
That surely can't be a good thing.
We went to Oxford to find out why, and what that means for British politics.

"You come out of the Oxford Union knowing how to speak"
Boris Johnson can't string a fucking sentence together coherently.
"Errr, urm, uh, uh, uh, forgive me, errr, errrm"

But he was able to fool the electorate and had the conservatives backing him. He knew how to fool through his bumbling.

He is articulate. He just doesn't like to display it in his persona of political performance for he tries to portray himself as the one belonging to the people, someone who is just like them. His deliberate messing up of hair is the best example of that. And if you want to realise how articulate and well spoken he can be, then you must see a debate between him and Mary beard, which is available here on RUclips.

One of the most serious and intellectual of recent PMs was Gordon Brown - he went to Edinburgh! Winston Churchill didn't go to University and Lloyd George did not go to Oxford! But Truss, Cameron and Johnson did go to Oxford. There we are...

Interesting explanation; really liked it. Just an opinion from myself to the people who are about to post 'kill the privileged' or something:
I don't exactly think it's fair to blame it on privileged people. Sure, the people who are PMs and MPs are often privileged but most aren't like this. Furthermore, most people from Oxford NOW are people from state schools. So, be careful with what you say. People from a few decades ago were more privileged, but now it's more unprivileged pupils.
Note: If you're wondering, yes, I go to a public school. I just wanted to put my thoughts out somewhere cause I'm a bit tired of getting shamed by people for being privileged and most are treating us like we're all the same, which makes me upset to feel and see.

To be in the UK government, first you need a Public School education, in reality one of the "Top" schools. This is vital as you need to learn how to speak, that you are a cut above the Plebs and you can show overwhelming self confidence. Finally, it is you first base for making "the right contacts".
University is next, preferably Oxford. This is primarily so you can forge links with your "peers". Membership of the Union will be a big help and give practice in debating.
With you established connections and Daddy's wealth, you can now do a political internship, eventually being parachuted into a safe seat where your parliamentary career is secure.
The solution? Get rid of public schools. Change the voting system from FPTP, preferably to STV. Have a residency requirement to stand for office, say at least 5 years, with your primary residence in that constituency.
It won't happen, Turkeys do not vote for Xmas.

@@philoslother4602 I was lucky. I went to a Secondary modern State school where my schoolmates ranged from middle class to unskilled working class. At University I mixed with some public school products, so, in my working life, I could converse fluently with the MD and the janitor, an essential skill.

"Does Oxford try it's best to be more diverse?"
Of course not! It's a world-class institute, if it was trying it's best surely it'd do better? You see this cognitive dissonance with universities all the time where they at the same time want to say they're able to do anything because they're so smart, but also can't do anything to improve equality or diversity - so which is it? Are our univsities actually just not very good at solving problems, or are they maintaining this unequal status quo on purpose?

There's nothing wrong in maintaining English cultures and beliefs it's entertaining and makes Britain what it is. Surely the Oxford team can see areas of improvement and are acting drastically in improvement to retain the good reputation they held.

  • @fod1855

Well considering Oxford is now made up of a majority of state school kids, as you can see from the video, not sure of the angle of this video...since it's JOE there must be one. As for the Oxford union, it's a debating/public speaking society...that and studying PPE seems fairly logical to me if you want to go into politics... oh and just because you're a certain race doesn't mean you should get a place at university. Oxford LOVES to go for diversity so I can assure you it's down to lack of applicants.
