feel like yesterday when I see that tragedy on live PPV event back in 1999 still, a shock to witness it live when see him falling omg & it pisses me off that Vince still continue the match after that horrible death of Owen heart that day & Vince destroy wrestle today it sucks to see I miss all my 80 and 90 early and mid 2000 wrestles wish to see that time comeback again & RIP Owen Heart he will be miss
I was and EMT working First Aid from 93 to 95. I used to hang in back with the wrestlers as I at the time also worked in the Independent Circuits and knew a bunch of the guys. At one show Owen and his wife and oldest son at the time needed to get to his car in the parking lots but by the time he was ready, a huge crowd had developed outside. I told him not to worry and had them all get in the back of our ambulance and made it to his car. Its a memory I cherish, especially since he was just a cool down to earth guy. I miss that Dude
Why is this so hard to believe? Why would someone go to such great depths to make up a story where he barely had any Interaction with him? You don’t think fans from the past use RUclips or go into the comments on a video of a famous wrestler that died in an infamous way that has millions of views? I’ve shook Chris benoits hand before and briefly met him if I told you that are you going to tell me I’m Chris Benoit himself? Seriously ...I get people make up stuff but people need to stop this shit where they think people are lying all the time
WWE's to fault for Owen's death & you blame his widow who's justified in not letting the company whose negligent stupidity killed her husband (and the father of children Oje & Athena, who agree with their mother, mind you) mooch of his legacy for self-servicing profit? What a tainted body & soul you must have.
@@t--iq4mo ~cue sarcasm~ Yeah, that's why he made the whole matter about himself yet again when trying to extort Vince out of more money, only for Vince to renege on the originally promised amount all because of Bret's unprofessional outburst (no matter how bitterly valid it still remains to this day) & consequently, only give the family only 2 million out of the multiple millions reported that he initially claimed to give them. ~end sarcasm~ Never mind that Bret, much like Davy Boy Smith did in 1999 (which caused friction between himself, Bret & Dynamite Kid [better known nowadays as Chris Benoit's direct influence & a genuine ticking time bomb in his own right who took his own life a few years back]), surprisingly came back to the WWE in 2006, doing so for what he's since said was "blood money" (that is, money the company still has yet to pay the divided Hart family for compensation) & "legacy" (as in, he was afraid of being forgotten, so he came back with his tail between his legs & even verbally derided justified widow Martha on the illegally-produced & released _Owen Hart: Hart of Gold_ DVD, on which WWE management also lied about -and Bret stayed curiously silent on the topic to boot - Owen deciding to stay in the Federation when everyone & their grandmother's dog knows that Owen wanted out of wrestling entirely by 1999, as he was keen on finishing his career alongside "The Hitman", "British Bulldog" & "The Anvil" in WCW [following the sudden death of "Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman & the subsequent asshole move by Mr. McMahon to borderline "grill" Pillman's grieving widow Melanie about the sudden death of her husband on the RAW IS WAR immediately after the events of the prior evening's Badd Blood 1997 pay-per-view, since Melanie was essentially leeching off of Pillman's wrestling income & was otherwise, cheating the American government's legal system by claiming welfare on top of that, yet Mr. McMahon didn't even give her the courtesy of having 24 hours to process the tragic news, let alone let her decide to do an interview on the subject, as he instead seeming chose for her, given that she was now indebted to his business after Pillman had died], but Mr. McMahon personally rejiggered Owen's contract to forcibly prohibit him from leaving) & ultimately, WWE is 100% legally liable/responsible/to blame/at fault for Owen's sad, unfortunate passing, all for a stupid stunt (one that not only was yet another cheap pot shot against the self-imploding WCW competition, but the whole Blue Blazer revival made Owen into a comedy laughingstock when he was already over by his famous namesake & brilliant in-ring skills alone).
@AngryBlack No, I am not. I'm just someone with a sensible mindset who knows that WWE is legally responsible for what happened & as such, I duly respect Martha's personal decision to NOT let the company whose gross negligence killed her husband & father to her children during their formative years (all off a unnecessarily stupid stunt entrance [which was, in equal parts, meant to lampoon the self-imploding WCW competition meanwhile also simultaneously embarrassing as well as punishing Owen by making him out to be a hapless buffoon superhero wannabe laughingstock played for cheap laughs during the specific "darker & edgier" anti-authority era that actively insults the clean-cut babyface persona & its corresponding cliches in favor of the more grounded & rebellious anti-hero that refuses to take BS from anybody] gone horrifically wrong) make any sort of sleazy profit off of Owen's humanitarian good nature & his legacy as one of the unsung greats.
As opposed to a "necessary" death in wrestling? I don't anyone should die in or around the ring, and no one should die because of their life as a wrestler, yet WWE doesn't think so. They're all "independent contractors" so they're "independent" from giving a shit about them beyond what hurts their corporate image. I hate this company.
Yes he did, he fell 78 feet from the catwalk in the rafters after being improperly strapped to the unsafe & untested 6 pound trick release by his chest rather his waist & back as per correct harness safety protocol and inadvertently let himself go whilst fumbling with the billowing cape of the blue blazer outfit that had flown from behind to obstruct his vision, collided chest first with the ring rope nearest the corner turnbuckle, receiving both a broken neck & blunt force chest trauma from the force of impact as his loose foot blew past referee jimmy korderas & upon attempting to sit up to get his bearings, Owen immediately collapsed dead where he lay, having severed his aorta in his ruptured chest that was connected to his broken neck to cause near-instant mass internal bleeding; The only reason he wasn't declared dead on the spot is because to qualify as dead, the deceased have to be examined by legally-certified medical physicians & a coroner. The deceased cannot be declared dead by mere emergency medical trainees that are unqualified to do much past standard CPR, so he was pretty much dead-on-arrival upon entering the hospital near Kemper arena.
From Mick Foley's second book, Mick says that Owen, after the fall and striking the ring rope, tried to do a sit-up, but couldn't, and collapsed. He may have died in the ambulance, on the way to the hospital...
What's even worse is they put in the rafters a man who was afraid of heights. Even if there had been no immediate malfunctions he could have done something wrong while in a panic.
I was actually at the Kemper Arena at Over the Edge 1999. I watched Owen Hart fall to his death. Still the most surreal night of my life. The accounts given in this video I can verify as accurate.
Jeremy & Sergio I don't know if the both of you are aware but the ONLY reason Owen is not in the hall of fame is because Martha is not allowing it as of yet. it took all of these years for a DVD because she finally allowed it
I remember watching the ppv straight away whwn J.R said we got big problems out here i knew something was up. Owen Hart was one of my favourite wrestlers in 2006 my son was born and i named him ...Owen.. R.I.P Owen Hart heaven has a special place for you......
90s cable would scramble the video for unbought PPVs but not the sound. So I was half-listening to it while doing homework or whatever. I remember hearing "this is not part of the show" and being really confused.
I can only imagine the shock and horror the live audience must've gone through, seeing Owen fall from the rafters and die right in front of them, I can't imagine the little kids who might've been watching in the crowd and seen that, seeing a human being pass away in front of their eyes
I don't blame you I'm scared of bikes becuase I saw a man get run over while riding his bike about a month ago I now have that accident grained in my head forever 😞
I was watching the Over The Edge ppv live that night with a group of friends. I will never forget the look that Jim Ross had on his face when they came back from the promo for the match between Owen and Godfather. Lawler was nowhere to be found on television. Everybody in the room with me went silent. It was truly chilling. Then J.R. was left with the responsibility of telling the audience that Owen Hart was rushed to the hospital and had passed away. I was shocked. My shock remained for the rest of the night as WWE for some reason finished the ppv.
Yeah, it was just an overall very eerie occurrence that you only see once in a lifetime and even after all these years I'll never forget the happenings of the night.
John Buck yeah me neither that year i just started watching WCW more then WWF because i was uncomfortable understand i was a kid at the time and i couldn't handle it
jctwitedragon that's what money does to people. Vince McMahon and Vince Russo for both greedy and selfish and honestly that's a man should have went to jail for that. Even knows me it could have been stop
PhilJr ik one of my friends parents were in the arena and they saw Owen fall .because they weren't looking at the titantron and something told them to look in the ring and they saw him fall.they said it was very scary, sad and disturbing
PhilJr I was there and most people thought it was staged . I didn't see the exact moment but I heard him land. Omg such a bad night for wrestling and fans
The only reason he would be in the HoF IS because of his death. Did u not listen to the video? He wasn’t a “top” guy. At least without Bret. That’s like putting Umaga in the HoF. 🤨
Roddy Piper blamed Russo and called him out in the ring. That was tense and didn’t seem fake at all. Nothing Piper did ever seemed fake. #RIPOwenHart #RIPRoddyPiper 🙏🏼 Two great Canadians 🇨🇦
Harley Race is the angel of death,so far just from ones Ive noticed,Owen Hart ran in Harley Race and his wife minutes before he died and Race said"hope that rope don't break on ya"I know it did'n't break but still,He warned Dino Bravo to get out of cigerette smuggling before he got killed"and finally Harley Race is quoted saying he told bruiser brody "If he didn't change his attitude while working in Purto Rico that he would never leave the island" creepy
Dexenation Gracey totally agree however it happened so fast I didn't know what to do and they didn't want to shock everybody on TV it was just so sad that they couldn't do anything. Definitely don't agree with them but what can you do
Some wrestlers and ex employees have said that Owen was worried that he was getting a reputation as being difficult because he would not do some of the sleazy storylines McMahon wanted; thus he reluctantly went along with it. They also said Vince Russo was insistent on doing the quick release. There are articles now with some of Russo's insane ideas after the network made TNA fire Russo. Sad. RIP Owen.
Daniel Kennedy very true he is definitely a legend and also a black heart. He's a wonder he's a soul survivor woo. LOL just kidding but yes Owen Hart and Bret Hart are the best tag team ever and truly Legends it's sad how WWE screwed them both. After all the work they did for them especially Brett I would have never expected him to come back in 2010 to even Grace that we didn't even say hi. if I was rich I would have never left I mean I would have never came back and I would have took my 93 million and would have never been heard about again.
+kyle stoddart Wrong. Maybe they didn't team up on a regular basis, but they were a team on occasion. For instance, they teamed up against the Steiners in a terrific match.
Owen's time at the top came immediately after the steroid scandal; the company was at a low point. This means that most people do not see Owen's potential. They see him as a friendly midcarder. His promos were at times jumbled, but they always got the point across. Not every wrestler should be as articulate as Jake the Snake. Owen's death overshadows a career most would kill for, and some amazing matches and angles.
@@BananaMana69 do you ever notice a lot of interviews when he's with Stephanie he's easily pissed with her? I know they're married a long time and people also have bad days but I get the vibe from them that she emasculates him and acts like the man in the relationship. Dismissing him, speaking over him etc.
I cant imagine if people would've had the cell phones like it is today. That would've been a viral video. Thank God it didn't, I wouldn't want to see that tragedy. I feel sorry for the people that was there seeing that "live".
MrBlockice22 there is a video. someone in the stands recorded it. the video is grainy and disturbing. also the only place you can find is on lime wire.
Yes. A classmate of mine who was a huge Wrestling fan had downloaded from Napster and shared with me the file on Real Player via email. It was only about 4 seconds long, VERY poor quality at 144p 10 FPS(In 1999, Internet Videos had average 240p 40 FPS), Dimmed Arena, Poor Noise Frequency, and extremely grainy. In the 4 second footage, you hear a combination of different sounds, The Crowd cheering, Someone or Owen yelling "Outta of the Way!" and Blue Blazer's theme just starting. The moment he falls, you see what looks like a silhouetted dummy falling VERY rapidly into the ring with the final frame and millisecond of the video ending with a loud THUD. Because the lighting is extremely abysmal, the Camcorder footage grainy and with poor quality, you can't really make out what's Falling. Again, it looks like a Shadowed Dummy. The video itself I recall being confusing because you can't tell if the object falling is a Human or Dummy and because of all of the live sounds and voices, you can only faintly hear what sounds like Owen shouting. There's only one thing unsettling about the footage. It happens SO FAST, its like you blinked. Everything occurs simultaneously. During the Summer of 1999, the file was also on The Wrestling Forum website and was also discussed on the Online World of Wrestling site. Snuff Sites LiveLeak and Faces of Death.com had attempted to retrieve the file and were promised it, but suddenly in September 1999, TWF ordered the file to be deleted from the site, and Napster themselves also suddenly removed it. Nobody tried copying it or compressing or duplicating it. The File simply vanished. It's been lost through time. Regarding if WWF/WWE has footage of the fall. I highly doubt it since, Jackson,Co,MO public officials recall WWF's Titantron and Arena Catwalk having very hazardous conditions. The Catwalk was flimsy and there weren't ANY Camera Equipment installed anywhere near both areas. And the main Bird's Eye View Cameras that dolly around the Arena Crowd were turned off since JR was reading the script from the Teleprompter just as the Title card is displayed on the Screen. The fall happens as soon as JR finishes this sentence "He claims not to be the Blue Blazer, but we know its Owen, we know he's the Blue Blazer......." the THUD is heard as soon as the Promo begins, within 5 seconds after JR finishes his sentence and the instant the promo official begins. The County itself fully supported Martha Hart's Case. Owen's Stunt Chaperone told her that he saw the whole thing occur and quote "Was Paralyzed and absolutely terrified when he fell". I call WWF/WWE's bluff when they claim to have footage of the fall. Because I suspect that of being a total lie. They didn't know it was going to happen and again had VERY questionable stunt safety precautions. I DO know that footage of AFTER the fall DOES exist. as soon as the first part of the promo ends, the lights are turned back on and crowdgoers do recall Jim Koteras waving and gesturing for EMTs and Jerry holding and tending to Owen in the ring while JR breaks character and appears alarmed and frantic. The Cameras then point to the Ring, except the broadcast ones as JR tries desperately to inform the audience at home that what just happened was not an Angle, not a Kayfabe, and not part of the Show. He tells the audience that the cameras will not show what's going on. While JR is talking, a Latina Teen who looks my age at the time, looking confused, hand gestures what just happened by "Him pulling his finger down horizontally and then crossing his neck with his hand". Meaning he just saw what happened and is sure that Owen Hart is dead.
I'll see what I can do, I can't promise you anything as I haven't spoken to Kevin in 17 years and the email has been defunct for 13 years. And you're welcome.
+felix ortiz What he said. New Foundation wrestled at the '92 Royal Rumble against the Orient Express (second version) and High Energy at the Survivor Series against the Headshrinkers.
If Owen was still alive he wouldve def been a multiple time world champion theres no doubt about it. And Owen was afraid of heights his family has said that many times.
Sadly , no. Look who was on top at the time ; taker, austin, rock, hhh, mankind. Even his brother bret hart has stated owen would have never been world champ
+kevin crittenden I agree. WWE had too much talent. Owen was planning on retiring after his contract was up anyways and had been saving all his money so he and his family could live comfortably. Owen and Martha already bought a home in Tampa to prepare for this. it's sad Owen did not get to experience this part of his life.
But with the Monday Night Wars on the way & the inevitable birth of the trash TV Attitude Era, neither HBK nor SCSA wanted to put Owen over post-Montreal Screwjob at Survivor Series '97 for HBK regarding Owen's more successful older brother Bret or the Inverted Piledriver/Sit-out Tombstone botch done by Owen to SCSA at SummerSlam that same year that eerily mirrored the exact same botch a then-Stunning Steve had done to Chono, a decorative Japanese star, whilst working in Japan.
@@Magpie_Mark92 With so many scandals in the history of this company, it's obvious there's bribing at play here. At least Brett Hart knocked Vince unconscious. Perhaps more people should do that... to Triple H, Vince, Linda, Stephanie and her brother. Several times.
I heard being given the stupid Blue Blazer gimmick was Owen's punishment for refusing a previous gimmick WWE wanted him to have. WWE's idea of what deserves "punishment" is really petty.
lou Albino wcw would of killed wwf without Steve Austin around period. The man double Raws ratings in a four month period October 97 March 98 2.2 - 4.4 And then from there Austin’s rise and rocks rise eventually took it to the fives six’s and even on some nights sevens and a few 8’s! That will never happen again...
Thank you for this documentary. I remember watching this PPV live with friends at my house so long ago. We were so shocked and saddened by how Owen left this world. This brings me right back. Condolences to Owen's family and friends.
This is really a terrible story. Made much worse by the fact that Owen did not want to do it. I can't imagine the last thoughts that entered his mind before impact. The quick rush of fear, anger and regret. It's really not fair. RIP Owen. Coincidentally I started watching wrestling a few months after Over the Edge and didn't know about Owen until I grew up a little and watched some of the mid 90s PPVs. He was always fun to watch and although he didn't have his run at the top, he'll always be remembered fondly by fans during that time period. He was a good person too. Someone who was actually a good role model outside of the ring during that time. That was rare.
In sad irony, the "Enough is Enough!" soundbite quotes from his _Black Hart_ theme foreshadow his tragic fate. "I tried to be a nice guy. I tried to play by the rules. You turned your backs on me! I snapped. I was a victim." Put those into the variant theme with the siren sound effects [ ruclips.net/video/edzor7_oasE/видео.html ] & you've a creepy, unsettling harbinger of the inevitable.
Me and my dad were watching the paperview. All we saw was the screen going to the ring, Owens new music started playing, then it cut to black for like 10 minutes. I saw that died during the broadcast message, I remember my dad seemed pretty shook up. My dad was a pretty hard dude, and that we had all almost watched a death seemed to shake him, he was a Hart fan
well you missed a lot then. It was showing the promo then a big sound. Then dark for a moment because the promo ended. You can see the camera scanning the crowd and they are cheering. They obviously didn't understand. The house lights go up. Then back to JR and no Lawler, saying something happened and it wasn't part of the show. Then panning around the crowd. Then back to the announcers. While we on PPV were told Owen had fallen and it wasn't part of the show then later that Owen had died.....no one there was told that. They left not knowing Owen had died.
And to think... years earlier, WCW actually did that one promo where a mannequin dressed as crow Sting fell from the rafters and people were super confused until it was obvious it was just a mannequin. I think Sting talked about it before, not that particular promo, but about how the monday after the incident happened, he was set to come from the rafters and he called bret to see if it was okay.
The announcement of Owen's death was made about an hour later after the fall, a "segment" right before the main event.... not immediately after the pre-taped interview and/or the fall. Just thought I'd point that out.....
No he did not. Poor guy actually suffered and it’s bullshit that that shit even took place to begin with. He wanted nothing to do with that and they made him do it any way. They fucking killed him and they got away with it
@@Ronnie.Raymond I hope he was unconscious after the fall. They said his aorta got separated from his heart I think, so he was definitely going to bleed out internally pretty quick is what I would think.
@@Renegade8652 Unfortunately, Owen still had a degree of conciousness after the fall...He tried to do a sit-up about five minutes after he landed in the ring ...He failed to sit up, and that was it...
There are a few factual errors in this video - but on the whole, it's very good! *By all accounts, Owen WAS afraid of heights, but agreed to the stunt anyway. *I've never heard anyone mention that Max Mini was actually going to be repelled with Owen in the harness, especially that night. It also seems unlikely due to the fact that Max Mini was already working angles with Mini Nova that exact week. *Jimmy Korderas said that he only felt Owen brush Lightly past him, and originally thought it was a fan who had tried to throw something in the ring *J.R did not announce Owen's death immediately after the pre-tape. The death announcement didn't take place for about another 45 minutes thereafter
@@leejamiemellor Owen's accident occurs approximately 40 minutes into the broadcast. JR doesn't make the announcement of Owen's death until immediately before the main event. I just checked and it's actually announced about 96 minutes after the fall first takes place.
Wake&Ruin yeh your right he announced the accident right after the break and then sometime further on they announced he’d died although they already knew before he left the ring
I still remember that night, I was 15 at the time, & I was asleep in bed, when my mom woke me up to tell me that Owen Hart had died & that he had fell. Apparently she had been watching Over the Edge. She also woke up my little brother & we both went into the living room to witness Jim Ross explaining what had just occurred. I couldn't believe it, I was beyond shocked & dismayed that something like this could happen, especially to Owen!! Wow, now, all these years later, I'm now finding out that the quick release mechanism that caused his fall, was so easy to trigger that it could come open from barely even being touched??!! Man, that is some straight up bullshit!! Owen should still be alive today!
Danny D he should have simply said I'm not doing it what would be the worst that can happen he get fired but he did it and this is the result can't blame Vince Owen could have spoke up for himself

@@SIXTHREEONEFOURTHREENIONEOOSEV I agree Vince is wrong, but I don't care if my job was at stake or not and what I said no to before, if I was this scared and thought I would get hurt no way would I do it.
The problem wasn't the equipment, as it was strong enough to hold someone five times heavier than Owen. The problem was the quick release mechanism. I still cannot believe that they did that stunt with such a dangerous release trigger. People should've gone to prison.
"It's what "insert wrestler here would have wanted" is how WWE justifies horrible things they do after a wrestler's death. It was their justification for using Eddie Guerrero's death to give Rey Mysterio a failed World Heavyweight title run. So whenever they say something that happens after a wrestler's death is what the wrestler would have wanted they really mean "It's what Vince wants."
She was given a copy of the footage which she destroyed. WWE still has the footage, along with the Droz incident, which they have to keep it for legal reasons due to the lawsuit. Kevin Kelly confirmed that in a column.
When Owen died I was watching it with my little sister on the free ppv channel that you could see the matches but the picture is fuzzy and wavy. I was 10 yrs old and she was 8 and we just started getting into wrestling. You could see the ring and a bunch of people but you couldn't tell what happened. All you could hear was, "there's been an accident!" Then it cut to the promo of him telling kids to, "say their prayers and take your vitamins," then cutting back to JR announcing his death. It was our first experience with death and it left a deep impression on us. We didn't watch the rest of the ppv. We had school in the morning so we had to go to bed. So we said our prayers, took our flintstone vitamins, and cried ourselves to sleep that night. R.I.P. Owen Hart
You never saw the ring. I was 16 and remember this clearly. All you saw was the audience and then JR and King every so often. That ring was never ever shown.
this is your niche Wrestlelamia. I've always dug your videos but this is what sets you apart from the others now. Keep pushing yourself to make great episodes of this series!
I just can’t imagine the weight that Vince carries, and has been carrying around for 22 years. The man clearly didn’t want to do the stunt, and Vince made him do it. I just can’t imagine how low, and guilty he feels knowing that this is all his fault. He should’ve just let him go to WCW with his brother Brett.
Kevin Steen keeping his son's name owen And himself keeping his name Kevin Owens is the best way to pay TRIBUTE to such a legend. RIP OWEN HART❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
the intro is so epic! you did such an amazing job on all of these behind the titantron episodes, like wow, seriously, this is better than stuff on wwe network!
I was 5. Same here. Seeing JR break the news broke me. The Dark Side of The Ring episode showing that clip broke me again at age 26, I cried harder as an adult
People still paid for the show, and although the events were horrific, there wouldve been still a huge amount of people that wanted to continue to watch what they paid for.
obviously giving fans what they paid for was more important to WWE.....I think they should have ended the pay PPV.... even if it ment giving refunds to fans... I think a person loseing his life in a accident is more important then continueing a PPV.
I was 15 the night that I attended this event, but my memories are vivid 21ish years later. Didn't see the fall, but saw Owen once he had landed on the mat. I remember him lifting his head up a bit before it went crashing back down. My best friend was right next to me and was laughing because he thought it was a work. Like the video says, most of the crowd didn't know what was going on. We didn't know the truth until we got in the car about 2 hours later. To this day I've kept the ticket stub in a trading card sleeve along with an Owen Hart trading card I had. I'll never forgot that night....
In his widow's book, she says as part of the discovery portion of their lawsuit they watched an 8-minute video taken by the ringside camera operator. So, yes, there is ample footage of what happened. But it'll never be released.
Of him hitting the ring. Not of him falling tho. No one knew he was coming from the ceiling and it was dark. Owen did a practice run with vince standing in the ring. After the practice run, Vince had them change the clip and not connect a backup safety clip in case it failed. He did this because he said Owen took too much time getting out of the harness with both of them clipped. It took Owen almost a minute to get out of it during the test run. That was too long for vince so he just changed it up and no backup safety clip. Bet you 1000 to 1 that Owen had no idea he did this either. Since there was no test run with the new clip they didn't know that it was the wrong clip. Owen was clipped with a mast clip set to release under 6 lbs of pressure. Owen weighed 227 that night. So what happened was he stepped off the platform in the dark as his promo was ending, the clip immediately released, and he fell 100 feet into the turn buckle and then onto the ring. 100% vince's fault. He should have had a safety line in case anything went wrong. Sting did. vince cheaped out with the techs, equipment, and with the safety. It cost Owen his life.
So you mean to tell me that max mini would have been propelled, flying down with Owen hart that night he died too? More than likely, the wwe would of had two tragedies that night. That would have been insane!
either that or Mini would have broken Owen's fall if he was in front of him. Regardless, thats shameful that Russo would even conjure up such a stupid stunt, and even more ridiculous that Vince would sign off on it.
When I found out what happened I was shocked. My first thought was how the hell did he die. Such a shame. As they say the good ones go young unfortunately. RIP Owen
This was so tragic, I remember watching it on PPV live. Not knowing what was going on was terrible. The world of pro wrestling would’ve been a completely different thing now if Owen Hart did not die, I would’ve been better. I totally believe that.
10:52 If you look up the video featuring spanish commentary of the event, it seems unlikely they used any sort of delay. They were just lucky a promo vid was airing at that moment. Spanish commentators are required to keep open mics during promos to do simultaneous interpreting. You can hear them freak out because of Owen's fall just a few seconds after the promo started. You can even hear Owen hitting the ring very faintly, along with some reactions of the crowd. I think they just added that interview to finish figuring out what to do, to buy some time.
Before watching this: I hope you add the Vince McMahon line to Bret as far as letting Owen out of his contract: "Over my dead body before I let Owen out..."
I don't blame Martha Hart for feeling the way she does about the WWE. Owen Hart's death was a result of gross negligence. Vince wanted the stunt done a certain way and didn't care that the quick-release equipment was far more dangerous and risky. Vince was also too insensitive to stop the show after the tragedy the crowd just witnessed. This was Vince's low point and he will forever have blood on his hands for pushing Owen into doing an unnecessary stunt and not putting his safety first by using the most dangerous equipment.
My Fiancée’s father was an EMT on call during that event. He was one of the first responders on the scene to get Owen’s body out of the arena. He was the guy who pronounced him dead at the scene.
@@jdfiend Only because E.M.Ts have no real clearance/legitimate qualifications to declare a person dead on-site, since they're only Emergency Medical Trainees taught the rudimentary basics of life-saving procedures (C.P.R [mouth-to-mouth resuscitation] & jumpstarting hearts back to life with electroshock therapy [rapid-fire chest compresses using electrically-charged jumper cable paddles]). Only a certified medical examiner (a proper doctor) & licensed coroner can legally declare a person dead where they lay.
This is why they need to stop with the stupid gimmicks and stick to just wrestling,Owen was a great wrestler that would've still been alive if they didnt do this stupid gimmick.
I was there at Nassau Colisuem when Draz (Puke) broke his neck from D-Lo Brown's walking powerbomb. The Rock and Mankind did an encore at the end of the show because of the delay earlier from said accident, the crowd was completely insensitive and chanted boring and other childish things while the paramedics were working on the hurt wrestler
My older was cousin saw it happen live that night, I asked him about and he said he could barely watch wrestling after, it was horribly traumatizing to witness a man dying, especially at the age of 9.
It would have made sense at that time it's not like they had big plans for Owen he was not as much part of the major storylines back then the best time to let him go would have been after the Nation of Domination broke up
well done my friend well done very professional and very nice. just so you know I remember reading or watching the video. Owens wife said she doesn't want owe in Hall of Fame. she said she did not want people to know how he died. And I guess she didn't want WWE to profit off of this she says.Owen will be missed but never forgotten
I watched that pay per view. It was surreal. If my memory serves me correctly the camera showed him coming down but did not show him hit. It then went to the crowd when the harness broke. For the life of me I don’t think they showed him hitting but now that I think of it... I’m not sure. I do kind of vaguely remembering seeing Lawler wave for the paramedics. And then it went to prerecorded comments by Owen. Then Lawler and Ross commentary talking about how Owen Hart has died. The whole room sat in stunned silence
That's actually not true at all lol they didnt show him fall, they didn't show him hit and they didnt show Lawler wave for emts. I still have the VHS and can tell exactly how it all went down
This shit still makes me tear up, I remember I was 11 years old and I was doing homework(while watching smart guy so it was like 7:30 ish) because I had school the next day and my older brother came rushing in and told me that Owen Hart had died, he wasn't watching the pay-per-view but he was on the phone with a friend who was watching it live and I couldn't believe it, a wrestling death wouldn't affect me that bad again until the Chris Benoit tragedy
Vince also sued the manufactures who made the quick release ,which was a boat rigging company in England and got most of the money back he forked out in compensation to the hart family
Since he never actually gave them the $93 million, he shouldn't have sued the manufacturer. Plus, it wasn't designed for use in rappelling. How'd he win that lawsuit? You're never legally responsible for a third party using your product in a way it wasn't designed for.
The promo The Ultimate Warrior gave before he fought Owen scared the s**t me, because he kept saying "Your gonna fall Owen, a great fall from tremendous heights and have no one to blame but yourself".
As a 6 year old kid in the crowd on this night I can honestly say that at the time I didn't understand how bad this actually was. I had one of those little hand held TVs in my hand thinking I could find a channel to hear the commentary(6 years old at the time. I now know there was no way.) I heard people gasping around me and I looked up too see him crash into the turnbuckle then hit the mat. My dad said it was all apart of the show when the EMTs stretchered him out. I wish he could've gave a thumbs up sign to prove he was okay. I now realize even though his eyes were open he was already gone. It wasn't until the next night on the tribute Raw show that I realized he died.
I remember being in 6th grade when my parents took me to Kansas City to see my first ever and only wrestling event. When that happened it was extremely confusing not just me being I was that young but to everybody. Everything went sort of quiet...you weren't quite sure if it was real. I mean deep down you were telling yourself "This is just part of the show...I hope that was part of the show." Then I remembered the look on my father's face... Something bad happened that wasn't supposed to. One thing that will always stay with me. That's too bad. I'll keep whoever affected in a prayer tonight.
When one considers how rich/wealthy Vince McMahon is, one missed PPV event is not going to make or break Vince or the company. PPV customers could've been given a "free credit" for the next PPV ONLY, & those in attendance could've received a full refund for the event. But to have the show still go on AFTER seeing a employee plummet to his death, just goes too show just how big a Jackass Vince McMahon really is. Nuff said.
Sam Ingram very true 100% because I would have told him multiple times he didn't want to do it. he also didn't want to let his family down and let the company down however this demanded that he do it
False. Owen Hart wasn't even planned to repel that night. It wasn't the original plan. Script was written and finalized when a member of the Kemper Arena staff contacted Vince Russo and told him that the people who did the harness work for Sting were wondering if there was anything they could do at Over The Edge. Russo decided that repelling Owen might be good for the character. Outside of okaying the idea Vince McMahon probably wasn't very involved in what happened. It was a freak accident.
Agreed he wasn't it was a simple accident taking risks of entering the ring in such a way is always a risk the wrestlers can say no despite what others think
Just to correct you on something you are wrong about Owen & Yokozuna were a 1 xtime WWF World Tag Team Champions not a 2 xtime set of champions. & as a fan of not only the Hart Foundation & of Owen Hart but I was devastated to lose a childhood hero like the Blue Blazer especially since I grew up watching him & missing him but when he came back in 1998 as the Blue Blazer I was ecstatic & felt that childhood vibe that was missing. But when I learned of his death after that pay-per-view on Sunday that I didn't catch or watch. & on Monday I learned & discovered that he had died tragically & at first I didn't believe it. But it was all over the news & media about his death. & I was absolutely hurt, devastated & shocked beyond disbelief. & even to this day I still can't believe he is gone or dead especially my childhood hero the Blue Blazer.
I was 10 in the upper deck with my older brother and cousin. i saw it all it looked fake like a test dummy was dropped off. Until he hit the top rope hit the mat and lifted his head up off the mat. I was 10 and I remember every bit of that. Ill never forget my brother and cousin trying to make me think nothing happened. How they tried to go buy me memorabilia a shirt and title belt so I didn't go home scared and shook up to my parents and wouldn't be able to go anymore. But my parents recorded and watched every KC event we went to just in case we were on tv. They knew more then us at the time. Weird so many years later seeing this. A lot of people want and search for the video since I was 10 I've had that video play in my head what everyone looks for I still see to this day. R.I.P Owen
This was an amazing video, you really deserve more subscribers than you have for videos like this. I really hope Owen gets into the Hall of Fame in the near future he not only deserves it for what he did inside the squared circle but he literally died for that company. R.I.P Owen an absolute legend in the ring and will never be forgotten.
Only way Owen would be in the HOF is if his widowed wife says he could. Sadly that will never happened nor would we get Owen in any video games or action figures.
I went to Raw is War live on sept 11 1998 and I seen owen hart wrestle ken shamrock that night, also Chyna, The Rock, Stone Cold, Undertaker, Big Show, Kane and Mankind all were there.

So true
I was and EMT working First Aid from 93 to 95. I used to hang in back with the wrestlers as I at the time also worked in the Independent Circuits and knew a bunch of the guys. At one show Owen and his wife and oldest son at the time needed to get to his car in the parking lots but by the time he was ready, a huge crowd had developed outside. I told him not to worry and had them all get in the back of our ambulance and made it to his car. Its a memory I cherish, especially since he was just a cool down to earth guy. I miss that Dude
and i am owen hart himself..........
Stop f’n lying 🤥
Why is this so hard to believe? Why would someone go to such great depths to make up a story where he barely had any Interaction with him? You don’t think fans from the past use RUclips or go into the comments on a video of a famous wrestler that died in an infamous way that has millions of views? I’ve shook Chris benoits hand before and briefly met him if I told you that are you going to tell me I’m Chris Benoit himself? Seriously ...I get people make up stuff but people need to stop this shit where they think people are lying all the time
Ps Owen Hart was KNOWN to ride with fans all the time by the way, adding even more validity to the OPs story
TheBMan You just wrote all that and I still think he’s lying 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️😂😂😂
Bret hart is a way better man than me I would blame vince for the screw job and killing my brother I would HATE HIM
WWE's to fault for Owen's death & you blame his widow who's justified in not letting the company whose negligent stupidity killed her husband (and the father of children Oje & Athena, who agree with their mother, mind you) mooch of his legacy for self-servicing profit? What a tainted body & soul you must have.

Im sure he does deep down
@@t--iq4mo ~cue sarcasm~ Yeah, that's why he made the whole matter about himself yet again when trying to extort Vince out of more money, only for Vince to renege on the originally promised amount all because of Bret's unprofessional outburst (no matter how bitterly valid it still remains to this day) & consequently, only give the family only 2 million out of the multiple millions reported that he initially claimed to give them. ~end sarcasm~
Never mind that Bret, much like Davy Boy Smith did in 1999 (which caused friction between himself, Bret & Dynamite Kid [better known nowadays as Chris Benoit's direct influence & a genuine ticking time bomb in his own right who took his own life a few years back]), surprisingly came back to the WWE in 2006, doing so for what he's since said was "blood money" (that is, money the company still has yet to pay the divided Hart family for compensation) & "legacy" (as in, he was afraid of being forgotten, so he came back with his tail between his legs & even verbally derided justified widow Martha on the illegally-produced & released _Owen Hart: Hart of Gold_ DVD, on which WWE management also lied about -and Bret stayed curiously silent on the topic to boot - Owen deciding to stay in the Federation when everyone & their grandmother's dog knows that Owen wanted out of wrestling entirely by 1999, as he was keen on finishing his career alongside "The Hitman", "British Bulldog" & "The Anvil" in WCW [following the sudden death of "Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman & the subsequent asshole move by Mr.
His death was absolutely unnecessary.
Exactly 😒💡
As opposed to a "necessary" death in wrestling? I don't anyone should die in or around the ring, and no one should die because of their life as a wrestler, yet WWE doesn't think so. They're all "independent contractors" so they're "independent" from giving a shit about them beyond what hurts their corporate image. I hate this company.
Wwf were lucky they wernt shut down
And the sky is blue. What kind of moronic statement is this? No death is ever necessary in wrestling.
@Karl Roc Say I love you Aka The Movment he means that the way Owen died could've and should've been totally avoided.
It was tasteless that they let people wrestle in a ring where a fellow employee died in. Terrible.
vinnytalarico Owen never died inside of the ring.
I remember watching it live..its still horrible til this day
From Mick Foley's second book, Mick says that Owen, after the fall and striking the ring rope, tried to do a sit-up, but couldn't, and collapsed. He may have died in the ambulance, on the way to the hospital...
He didnt die in the ring dumb ass
the accident could have been avoided if only the company cared about the safety of there employees
What's even worse is they put in the rafters a man who was afraid of heights. Even if there had been no immediate malfunctions he could have done something wrong while in a panic.
Andrew J exactly wcw used it correctly with sting

Ethan Van Halen lol you fucking troll too bad it wasn't you instead.
WWE does put security first nowadays and it looks boring, 90s wrestling look way more realistic and dangerous
I was actually at the Kemper Arena at Over the Edge 1999. I watched Owen Hart fall to his death. Still the most surreal night of my life. The accounts given in this video I can verify as accurate.
Was it loud?
No it wasn't. The collective gasp of the crowd drowned out the sound, thank goodness.
There was a loud THUD as soon as it happened.
Sergio Navarro ...and you know this how?
@JustChizzin Over the Edge 1999.
Aw :c
I remember. that was the last time I watched wrestling.
It is probably best that the footage never be showed. RIP Owen, definitely one of the best performers.

fall from the rafters and die right in front of them, I can't imagine the little kids who might've been
watching in the crowd and seen that, seeing a human being pass away in front of their eyes
I know for a fact some people that were their that night have never watched wrestling ever since
I don't blame you I'm scared of bikes becuase I saw a man get run over while riding his bike about a month ago I now have that accident grained in my head forever 😞
I knew people that was there and still talks about it never having gone to a match again
They didn't see it tho. It was dark and no one knew he was coming from the ceiling. They heard Owen hit and then saw him laying there in the ring.
I could tell some of them didn’t believe that someone died they just thought it was part of the show.
My shock remained for the rest of the night as WWE for some reason finished the ppv.
yeah I was 11 years at the time i could't handle it and went to bed i decide to watch Nitro the next night but they mention it on Nitro as well
Yeah, it was just an overall very eerie occurrence that you only see once in a lifetime and even after all these years I'll never forget the happenings of the night.

Owen deserves to be in HoF and not BC of his death but BC of his LIFE. We miss you Owen
Jennifer Green it's all up to his widow Martha. the only reason it took years for for the DVD to be made is because she finally gave the o.k.
The only reason he would be in the HoF IS because of his death. Did u not listen to the video? He wasn’t a “top” guy. At least without Bret. That’s like putting Umaga in the HoF. 🤨
I will not

Two great Canadians 🇨🇦
Harley Race is the angel of death,so far just from ones Ive noticed,Owen Hart ran in Harley Race and his wife minutes before he died and Race said"hope that rope don't break on ya"I know it did'n't break but still,He warned Dino Bravo to get out of cigerette smuggling before he got killed"and finally Harley Race is quoted saying he told bruiser brody "If he didn't change his attitude while working in Purto Rico that he would never leave the island" creepy
He’s wise from what it sound like
He said not to use the diving headbutt and then... Benoit.
All common sense really.
Isnt Harley Race Dead Now??
@Dirty Random310 Harley Race is dead now.
In my opinion, the show should NOT have gone on.
Same
add37j yes, his opinion
add37j Owen probably would have wanted to show to go on.
In this case, the "show must go on" mentality is bullshit, everyone should've been given a refund, a man just FUCKING DIED in front of the world!
Sad. RIP Owen.
Owen Hart a total legend.
Daniel Kennedy very true he is definitely a legend and also a black heart. He's a wonder he's a soul survivor woo. LOL just kidding but yes Owen Hart and Bret Hart are the best tag team ever and truly Legends it's sad how WWE screwed them both. After all the work they did for them especially Brett I would have never expected him to come back in 2010 to even Grace that we didn't even say hi. if I was rich I would have never left I mean I would have never came back and I would have took my 93 million and would have never been heard about again.
bret and owen were never a tag team lol
+kyle stoddart Wrong. Maybe they didn't team up on a regular basis, but they were a team on occasion. For instance, they teamed up against the Steiners in a terrific match.
Owen's time at the top came immediately after the steroid scandal; the company was at a low point. This means that most people do not see Owen's potential. They see him as a friendly midcarder. His promos were at times jumbled, but they always got the point across. Not every wrestler should be as articulate as Jake the Snake. Owen's death overshadows a career most would kill for, and some amazing matches and angles.
WELL ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!
there's something sinister about the wwe

MrBlockice22 there is a video. someone in the stands recorded it. the video is grainy and disturbing. also the only place you can find is on lime wire.
KingOfTFL Can you link it?
It is not on LimeWire. It was on Napster during the Summer of 1999. It has since been lost through time.

Owen was great , it just wasn't the right time. Maybe 94 when he was feuding with bret during king of the ring or summerslam

He was actually a hell of a lot more talented and better wrestler than Steve Austin was..
Blessings to Owen's wife.
I'm also going to point out that Owen Hart didn't die on impact...
@@marknorth8904 Man, that is terrible. Owen was a cool guy.
*Jimmy Korderas said that he only felt Owen brush Lightly past him, and originally thought it was a fan who had tried to throw something in the ring
*J.R did not announce Owen's death immediately after the pre-tape. The death announcement didn't take place for about another 45 minutes thereafter
Yet Undertaker Conquered His Fear Of Heights In 1996
I dont agree with the 45 minuets thing i still have the original tape for the live pay per view and he announced it with 5 minuets minimum
His widow said Owen wasn’t afraid heights if you read her book.
I truly enjoy this series, "Behind the Titantron." This series is GOOD! Keep up the great work.
Why would anyone strap a 240lbs man to equipment that was only supposed to hold a fraction of that weight?!
Danny D he should have simply said I'm not doing it what would be the worst that can happen he get fired but he did it and this is the result can't blame Vince Owen could have spoke up for himself

"It's what "insert wrestler here would have wanted" is how WWE justifies horrible things they do after a wrestler's death. It was their justification for using Eddie Guerrero's death to give Rey Mysterio a failed World Heavyweight title run. Actually, Martha Hart took the WWE to court regarding that footage, she won, and has it in her possession now.
It's AFTER the Fall.
The bad thing she did was listen to Bret about wanting more money. In the end, lost out of 93mil and only got 30m?(correct me if I'm wrong).
AsusanXT 18 million...:/
She tore the tape up
She was given a copy of the footage which she destroyed.
WWE still has the footage, along with the Droz incident, which they have to keep it for legal reasons due to the lawsuit.

R.I.P. Owen Hart
I remember watching the PPV with my cousin I was 17 at the time
1st was the new foundation, then came high energy.
If he did not fall, the rope could have strangled him, either way that stunt looked dangerous.
Very informative, keep up the good work!
Love these videos and this series, I hope more are coming. Very creative
I'm on a binge here with your videos. This is probably the saddest death. He was fucking young. Thanks for this video.
You’d be shocked how little empathy a man of his power and status possess.
Kevin Steen keeping his son's name owen
And himself keeping his name Kevin Owens is the best way to pay TRIBUTE to such a legend.
RIP OWEN HART❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you u the best RUclipsr with the best facts about Owen Hart
Perfect example of following your instincts and intuition . if something inside you is telling you dont do something then dont do it
the intro is so epic! you did such an amazing job on all of these behind the titantron episodes, like wow, seriously, this is better than stuff on wwe network!
1999 . I was 9 yrs old. I cried when I heard he died.
I was 5. Same here. Seeing JR break the news broke me. The Dark Side of The Ring episode showing that clip broke me again at age 26, I cried harder as an adult
THE SHOW SHOULD HAVE ENDED. WHY WOULD IT GO ON!? SMH
Owen would've wanted it to go on.
That's FALSE.
People actually want the show STOPPED.
20 years. I was 16. And saw the fall on Real via Hotline/Kazaa.
A video marked "Do not destroy, view, or duplicate" sounds like an SCP. Chilling stuff.
In my opinion Owen Heart looked a lot like the guy who played Johnny Lawrence in the movie The Karate Kid.
Jeiygo fuck yeah he did... crazy
LOL!!! I never thought about that!!
Jeiygo i
I noticed that too! they looked like brothers.
Spot on with that
In his widow's book, she says as part of the discovery portion of their lawsuit they watched an 8-minute video taken by the ringside camera operator.
@@lyricberlinWWE has the whole footage of the fall, from multiple cameras.
Russo and Vinnie Mac are idiots for coming up and approving with this stunt.
Fantastic journalism here. Thank you for your hard work. RIP Owen.
Owen's statement in the beginning says it all!
Before watching this: I hope you add the Vince McMahon line to Bret as far as letting Owen out of his contract:
"Over my dead body before I let Owen out..."
X-pac? Is that you?
He was pronounced dead at the hospital
@@jdfiend Only because E.M.Ts have no real clearance/legitimate qualifications to declare a person dead on-site, since they're only Emergency Medical Trainees taught the rudimentary basics of life-saving procedures (C.P.R [mouth-to-mouth resuscitation] & jumpstarting hearts back to life with electroshock therapy [rapid-fire chest compresses using electrically-charged jumper cable paddles]).
Only a certified medical examiner (a proper doctor) & licensed coroner can legally declare a person dead where they lay.
BS
This is why they need to stop with the stupid gimmicks and stick to just wrestling,Owen was a great wrestler that would've still been alive if they didnt do this stupid gimmick.
PLEASE KEEP DOING THIS SERIES!!!!

If McMahon allowed Owen to go to WCW, maybe he’d still be alive today?
It would have made sense at that time it's not like they had big plans for Owen he was not as much part of the major storylines back then the best time to let him go would have been after the Nation of Domination broke up
Yea WCW would've probably drop the ball with him like they did with Bret but at least he would've been alive
Owen Hart was Dynamite on the mic r.i.p brother
On my life, I've heard people swear up and down that the Kemper arena is haunted by Owen's spirit.
well done my friend well done very professional and very nice. just so you know I remember reading or watching the video.
I still have the VHS and can tell exactly how it all went down
J A I hadn’t seen it since it happened and did say that I was not sure. I don’t have VHS’s of old pay per views
Sad
Vince also sued the manufactures who made the quick release ,which was a boat rigging company in England and got most of the money back he forked out in compensation to the hart family
Since he never actually gave them the $93 million, he shouldn't have sued the manufacturer. Plus, it wasn't designed for use in rappelling. How'd he win that lawsuit? You're never legally responsible for a third party using your product in a way it wasn't designed for.
Wow, this is so toughtfull...
That is called covering your ass.
How the wrestlers was able to concentrate on doing the show is beyond me.
The promo The Ultimate Warrior gave before he fought Owen scared the s**t me, because he kept saying "Your gonna fall Owen, a great fall from tremendous heights and have no one to blame but yourself".
Its called "Ultimate Warrior promo on Owen Hart" by an uploaded called Rocket Fuel
Lone Wolf I guess he predicted the future
except the vince duo and scum stunt rigger are more responsible / to blame than owen himself, who was pressured into doing the stunt
Dude keep these coming there awesome
I mean deep down you were telling yourself "This is just part of the show...I hope that was part of the show."
Then I remembered the look on my father's face...

Nuff said.

Vincent Kennedy McMahon is to blame for the Owen hart death
Technically Owen is to blame as bad as it sounds, he was the one who accidentally hit the quick release
