You are absolutely right about the “being taught to memorize” thing. I was an excellent student as far as grades go, and pretty smart, but at a young age I realized that that was basically the formula for everything; memorize and regurgitate on the test. There was a lot I never truly absorbed, and am just NOW understanding the meaning behind some of the most elementary things because back in school I never really LEARNED it.

    • @pearllee
      @pearllee 4 года назад +8

I agree completely. I was a good student in school too but, it was because I memorized and regurgitated on tests. In the end, making sure students actually understand the concepts taught does not seem to be a priority...

I had a science teacher who did this. She was only nice to the cheerleaders and treated me like shit. She made me feel so bad about myself and even made fun of me (I was awkward and walked with a bounce so kids made fun of me) to other kids, fueling the bullying. I never complained about it but my parents met her at the open house and said they hated her because she seemed immature and bitchy. Right after the popular girls graduate, she befriends them on social media and then starts hanging out with them as friends and tells them personal things about students she didn't like. And she's tenured now.

I went to high school both in the U.S. (For a year) and in Finland. My experience in the US high school was that everything we did was for the grade, for the score, for the numbers - not the learning itself. So often we had to turn in our homework and didn’t even go over the right answers or discuss it.
In Finland it is much more just for the student. We do get homework in Finland but it doesn’t really affect your grade, because the teachers don’t always even check if you did your homework, but they go over it in class. This is also because in Finland it is believed that the high school student is more independent and in charge of their own learning. If the student doesn’t do their homework it’s their problem - not the teachers.

We don't qualify for any kind of help, except Medicaid for our children. And each school age child in the county got a white card with the child's name on it. Could only be used for FOOD. @@anniebellelee as for knowing if they are "addicts," well, I guess honestly you can't know that about ANYONE unless they're OBVIOUSLY on certain substances, ie are drunk or methed out. I'm not sure what that has to do with kids getting EBT funds for food. It would be hard to charge meth to a child's EBT card and alcohol is out of the question. These are not typical EBT/SNAP cards, as they're issued in the child's name and are obviously temporary cards, not meant to be used after the initial deposit.

Hi! I’m a teacher from an urban and unaccredited school district. My district is going literally only by case numbers- we’ll be doing virtual learning until cases have lowered and reevaluating every two weeks. Then we will slowly move into a hybrid model, but cases still have to go down. We never have to go into the building but our supervisors highly encourage coming for a couple days a week. We’re taking this super seriously and I think all districts should be working under this model for the safety of families and staff.
Edit: thank you SO MICH for bringing up the martyr mindset that surrounds teachers. I signed up to teach because I love to teach. I did not sign up to be a counselor, psychologist, nurse, custodian, bullet shield, or guinea pig in a pandemic. Our teachers need HELP and instead of retaining good teachers they are just making the standards to teach lower. It’s a huge fucking mess.

    • @GenXfrom75

Our teachers are going in, yet the students will be watching from home. This is how we're starting on Sept 8. Then we'll slowly go back to in-person as rates drop. Just a side question: How do you teach at an "unaccredited school district"? What IS that? I've never seen that before...

    • @elenasings8193

Aundria Cooper Premo our district lost its accreditation due to low test scores and other various reasons. It means that we lose state and federal funding and some colleges do not have to accept our high school degrees. The worst part about it is the majority of my students are Black or otherwise a minority, so it deeply effects those communities in our area and contributes to the school to prison pipeline. Almost no budget, no materials, no support for students, bad technology, etc.

I totally felt the same way when i was your age (I’m 27 now), and it was actually very scary for me when i would be sitting in class listening to some useless lesson, thinking about all of the adult responsibilities i would soon be taking on and had no knowledge of. Luckily, i was so bad in all of the math classes that the school made me pick an online math course that they could give me credit for. I picked financial math because i knew i would use it, and it is literally THE ONLY math i ever use now!
It made me realize that the internet is such a great tool. You can sign up for classes in pretty much anything! I think you can take crash courses on GreatCourses (idk for sure if that’s the name). Recently, I’ve learned a lot from asking friends questions! I’m at the age now where a lot of ppl are buying houses and the most valuable information about that sort of thing comes from someone who has done it.
Also, i should add this: if any high schooler is unsure what they want to do for the REST OF THEIR LIVES, its okay to not go to college right away!! I tried to do something I wasn’t that interested in to make my family happy, i ended up hating it, dropping out, and aimlessly working at restaurants for several years. It was awful, not knowing how to exist in this adult world i felt dumped into. But eventually i found a design school online that offered a $2000 graphic design certification (9-ish months of schooling & I think you can sign up for a lot of vocational stuff when you’re under 18! Just fyi). Now I’m relocating to NYC with a brand new graphic design job & i spent way less time and money getting certified than most people in my field.
Sorry that’s so long!! Don’t be scared, just think about your goals and make it your top priority to achieve them. I still have questions all the time about things that seem like all adults should know, but that’s what RUclips, reddit, and conversations with friends are for :)

I'm from Finland and studying to become a teacher. I think some people have misunderstood the "no homework" thing. It basically means that in elementary school kids get little to none homework depending on the teacher and the day of the week. Middle school and high school kids get a lot more homework but still a lot less than for example students from the USA. I think Finlands success has more to do with the fact that our schools are equal with one another (no private schools) and every kid gets the same education and opportunities.

In recent years they have started doing "academies" within high schools. So you would pick what is essentially a "major" and other than your core classes, your extra classes are all focused on your major. In my sons school they have: IT, Civil Engineering, Multimedia, sports medicine, nursing, aerospace engineering, ag tech... and they also have some that work with local power companies.
I don't know why most of the Southeast schools (maybe other regions also) have started going this route, but I like that it gives the kids a taste of going towards a career BEFORE they have to choose something in college and pay for it So a "free" way for them to try something out. So maybe this is a step towards reform for schools?

I live in the Netherlands (11th on that ranking) and our school system roughly works as follows.
Primary school (until 12 y/o): upon graduation your educational ''level'' is determined (based on your performance throughout all years, teachers' advice and 1 standardized test in year 8). From there on out you go to different high schools.
There are roughly 3 levels, let's say A B and C. If you got the highest level, A, your high school is more academic, you take more classes and it takes 6 years to graduate. B level takes 5 years and C level is way more practical and takes just 4 years.
Then, level A graduates go straight to university to get a Bachelor's degree in 3 years and a Master in 1. Level B go to a different kind of college were they obtain a Bachelor in 4 years, with the opportunity of switching to a university if they perform highly or if they wish to get a Master (additional requirements). And Level C students again to a different college that takes anywhere from 1 to 4 years.
So let's say you want to become a lawyer, accountant, pharmacist etc. you'd have to go to level A high school and go to university. If you'd wanted to become a plumber, construction worker, teaching assistent, administrative worker you'd take level C and go to a 1-3 yr college etc. Your grades in high school DO NOT determine whether or not you get accepted into college/university, the only thing that matters is whether you took the relevant classes to get in (ie if you want to study Engineering, you have to have taken science, physics etc).
We still have a long way to go, but at least this way students that are not really book smart or don't like going to school for a long time, can take a different path & there are less high school drop outs (as it is illegal to do so before the age of 18) Also, there is not a huge pressure to perform to get a certain GPA or A level score as you get in regardless (with only Medicine and Dentistry as exceptions). Edit: all schools are public & education after high school is partly funded by the govt. Some students get financial aid if their parents earn below a certain amount €, the rest pay about €2,000 a year with the possibility of borrowing against 0-1% rate

I remember being so stressed about picking a college and deciding on a major in high school. I didn’t like school, and I completely gave up my senior year and did whatever I needed to just to graduate. After I graduated I decided I did not want to go to college and I spent 2 years traveling with all the money I saved for college. I also started working after those 2 years and found a career path that I love, because I took time to find myself and get life experiences after school. I now work in property management and am going to school to get a degree in HR and Communication. Everyone harshly judged me because I did not go to college right after I graduated, but I honestly feel like I would have dropped out if I did not take time to find what I was actually passionate about.

Ehhh...college is overrated and overpriced. I never went, I only have a GED and I own my own business now. I learned everything I needed to know online. So, unless you are going to be a doctor, lawyer or the like college might not be necessary. I would recommend my children go to a trade school if anything.

I recently finished Mile Higher and have started from the beginning on The Sesh.
I was 4 out of 90 and despite being a “smart” kid in high school, so many points you all made are so on point!! The testing is crazy and main lined. I 100% agree with the idea of just memorizing and forgetting. When I really look back, what I learned is HS is gone, college has stuck more since that’s what I CHOSE to learn! Also- why does high school not prepare us for real life?! Not everyone wants or needs to learn how to be a college student! Let’s teach our children about loans, money management, how to write a check and fill out an envelope, let’s teach them SKILLS, not just what the government wants to teach them!! Really loved this one 💕😊

My ece center closed for 3 weeks in the wake of the pandemic. We were determined to stay open and provide for our community that still needed and needs us. It takes patience, diligence and yes a fuck ton of cleaning and sanitizing. There isn't a "right way" but I was born to be here for these children. And regardless of my what the paycheck looks like I always will be. ❤

Something that I'd like to point out about the "going back to school" debate is that even though safety is the number one priority and online school is good for that, adolescents who come from low-income or immigrant households may not have access to devices they need to continue with their schooling-or even know how to interpret what's going on with protocol, instructions that are being given from the school, etc.

I feel like somewhere along the road the American education system turned into "only America good". We aren't really taught other languages because "Americans speak English". Looking back - my history teachers glossed over A LOT of things our country did bad. We were taught to sing songs and praise the country. Not to mention praise people in our history who in reality weren't great people. 🙃

My son is a senior at a career center or vocational school. Friday was his 1st day back , he goes 2 days a week for lab & the next week he goes 3 days & so on & so forth. They are all in one class & lunch is also done in the same room as well. I remember when the lockdown back in March happened my son was doing amazing, getting ready to do an apprenticeship. He is a genius in math & does really well hands on , he’s taking engineering & does well at it. He has a LD which is reading comprehension & he really had a hard time doing school at home. He had some past traumas come up and bad anxiety & depression. I know lots of kids didn’t graduate. As much as I’d prefer him to be home , he’s an essential worker already and he learns hands on. I think this is the best for my son. I’m worried af ,but for his mental health this is what’s best. He was so lucky the teachers are amazing or he wouldn’t have even passed the 11grade, they reached out and was amazing. They really cared about my son & was like we know he was doing so good at school & was concerned & understanding thank goodness of what he was going through. Him & his 2 friends just hardly made it. Thankful for those amazing teachers ❤️ ( I do agree they need to be payed more ,no one asked for Covid & my son’s teacher decided to reach out and completely understand & work with my son, & they are my Hero’s) love this show guys I just wanted to add this ❤️
Yess no homework honestly makes so much sense, when he gets home he goes to work and he needs a break from just going all day, plus he would have the teachers right there to help vs having parents who may work or like me have a leaning disability and umm I can’t do lots of things my son can.
I couldn’t imagine being a parent of young kids right now. On one hand they need that social interaction, on the other they are not going to listen to all these new rules like mask , social distancing etc.. but lots of parents work or the home environment isn’t great. This is all such a mess. I’m thankful I got 2 already graduated and only one in but he’s a senior.

So I’m in N.C. and have 2 little ones in elementary school. They are going to school once a week and the other 4 days is remote learning on chrome books. (Which the school provides them both their own for the whole school year for free) They are doing music, art, gym, and even lunch, everything in their one classroom. They only have 3 other kids in the class at a time also. And 6 feet apart and mask on at all times. They get more outside breaks now to breath and play. They love it. They like their once a week to see their teacher, and friends. Then remote learning at home with mommy on their own laptop. So far so good. And for the kids that don’t have internet, it will save all their answers on the assignment and once they get to school, it picks up the schools internet and loads all their answers. It’s a great system so far.

I can relate to this podcast so so much! I'm 30 years old and when I was in school and in learning support, I felt like it was helpful, but that I wasn't really learning, because they fed all the answers to us. It left me really unprepared in college, because I was so used to classes being easy in high school that I almost failed out. I forced myself to study twice as hard as the other kids in order to catch up and luckily I was able to get into grad school and study what I wanted to which was clinical mental health counseling and once I was in that program it became easier for me to learn. I definitely feel like change needs to happen in our education system to give everyone equal opportunity to learn at their own rate.

I cant tell you how much this hit home for me. My whole schooling life i had a hard time. Was always put in to program's to help me with my Reading and writing. When i was in gr6 was told my writing was at a gr1 and my reading a gr2. My parents had to pay out of there pocket to get me the help i needed because the school just couldnt seem to bother to help me more. After taking 3 years to get my gr 12 i found out few years later im dyslexic. Once covid hit and my daughter was home doing school work all the feelings from school came back up for me and its been so hard to help her when i couldnt even help myself in school. I was supposed to take my GCSEs this year, and the grades were definitely downgraded by quite a lot. In the U.K. they now use a 1 to 9 grading system with 9 being the highest you can get. I was supposed to be given a 5/6 in most subjects (which is the same as a B and B+) and was given all 4s (Cs), one 5, and a 3 (D) which doesn’t count as a pass, in English Lit. It definitely unfair that some students are being graded so low while are being given top marks.
    Anyway love the podcast 💖

My boys are going into grade 9 next week. We’re doing a staggered entry, but there’s no talk of mandatory masks. Sounds like any type of possible sickness, the kid will be quarantined immediacy. For the sake of their mental health, maintaining good grades and having social interaction is quite important. My boys didn’t do well with the on-line learning. I’m a teacher in Ohio. I teach 11th and 12th graders, and they’re great about keeping their masks on. We have VERY strict seating charts in each class. The health department calls us if one of our students tests positive or needs to be quarantined. One of our administrators then goes to the classrooms those students have been in and measures how far apart other students sit based on the seating chart. If any students sit 6 ft or less from the quarantined student, they get quarantined as well. The students that get quarantined are expected to work from home unless they are sick. We’re exhausted. Students are exhausted. We do a massive amount of cleaning and are very strict about our masks, but I still got COVID. How do you not when you’re around 100s of people a day? My heart breaks for my kids. They are tired and just need a break.
I work at a career center (public school), and we are VERY hands-on, even in our academic classrooms. Most of our students, especially those with learning disabilities, thrive when they come to us. Tactile and kinesthetic instruction works!

To your point of all the adults being the ones to spread the germs in school... My MIL (a teachers aid in an elementary school) and I were talking yesterday about how we give it two months and the schools will be shut down again because like you guys said, kids touch everything and school is germ city. And she mentioned to me she’s already planning on shutting down earlier than that personally in her school because the janitor just tested positive for covid. The person who cleans the whole building.... and is in every single room...... so needless to say she’s been on edge and terrified because her and my FIL don’t have the best immune systems. This was a big episode! I have 2 kids with Autism and have been dealing with special ed and IEP's for 14 years. I had to move my family to get in a school district that would accommodate my kids. The services were so bad I found that i was spending all my time fighting with the school. But as I'm sure you're aware, better schools reside in towns that are wealthy. We live in the smallest house that we could all fit in and pay more than is acceptable. Dealing with special ed in schools could be a parents full time job. Great discussion!

I LOVED this episode. I have never related to someone else and their experience so much before. I am also dyslexic, school was SO hard for me. I was a "sped" and still feel like I have this stigma of "I'm stupid" since I was treated that way by teachers and other kids. I had one of those teachers who was in with the "cool kids" she was my English teacher and I still remember her making fun of me for miss spelling a word and she was loud enough for the entire class to hear. Then I was kicked out of the class for replying "Sorry I can't spell". I'm almost 30 I still can't spell, barely read, and often still feel like I'm not smart enough for things. Kendall, I honestly have NEVER related to anyone else so much before on this topic. I don't want to say its comforting that I'm not alone, because its not comfortable at all and it sucks. But it is nice to know I'm not the only one who felt this way about school and having learning disabilities. Its awful going through life thinking that you are stupid. Thank you guys so much!

We have three kids in elementary school. A kindergarten and two third graders. We were very worried of how things were going to be. But my daughter who is the 3rd grader likes that there are less kids in class. She said it’s not as noisy and they have space. Our kiddies wear the gator masks that go around their neck so they don’t drop it on the floor. Our kids are so excited to be back at school. I feel way less stressed too. I teach homeschool kids art and we all just use common sense and wear masks when near each other and clean hands and services. I’m just so hoping for normal

I’m from Finland and I’m 25 and we did have homework from school, but in for example elementary school we had couple of short exercises if I remember correctly. But I do think that they have updated the school system a lot after I was in school and it is a lot different now. I’ve heard that kids can learn coding in elementary school which is amazing! I’m so proud of our education system, students get all the school supplies free and even lunch until high school ( or other second degree education they choose). I’m just gratuating from university and it’s also worth mentioning that we pay 85€ per year of university. And we also get funding of about 500€ per month for rent and living, if we don’t have any work ( it goes down if you have a side job).

Really loved this podcast. I did great in my entire school career, from elementary to college always straight A's, I could present in front of class with no worries, I LOVED math and I actually really liked learning about new things but honestly, I can confirm that most of the things I did have to learn on middle school or high school, like, I don't even remember them! I've spend waaaaaay too much time worrying about grades or remembering things for tests that I don't even remember anymore, it's honestly kinda infuriating lmao.
My entire experience as a whole isn't as positive. I was heavily bullied on elementary and middle school. Didn't have much friends for most of my schooling time. I was always compared to my brother and sisters at how unpopular I was compared to them and I sucked at sports, so there you go! lmao.

The school I teach at is having students eat in the classroom. Specials (e.g., art, music) have that specific teacher come to the classroom so students remain in the same room. The only exception is gym class. Also, if the teacher gets COVID the class gets a substitute teacher. If a student contracts the virus then that one class goes online for the 2 weeks.

Hi, finnish girl here! It’s been almost 6 years since i was in high school, but we didn’t have lots of homework. Usually around 3 questions per subject to answer in a few sentences or 3 math questions. Not anything you’d use more than an hour a day on (per subject). We are also able to choose what we want to study at age 13 onwards (7th grade) and it’s pretty great. Some people can get a full hairdressing or mechanics (& others) degree by the age of 16 while doing school and others can do more art/music/sports/academics based ”careers”. I moved to New Zealand right after graduating at 18 and did a few years of university here and it did NOT compare - at all. My partner is kiwi (and older) and he is amazed how much knowledge I have gained from just doing school until the high school level, that he never got taught and therefore doesnt know about the world and history as much. I’m definitely super grateful and will cherish my good experience with school forever! Not to mention that everything is completely FREE, university degrees included. 🧡

I struggled getting through high school. I wasn't interested in classes and here in Belgium you can't choose your classes in high school so I had to take the ones that the school gave which resulted in me dropping out. After that I learned I had ADD and made the choice to get my high school degree through the exam comission ( you learn on your own and go to Brussels twice per year to take an exam). After getting that I went for my bachelors degree in Computer science..instead of going through a traditional college I did it through evening school so I could combine it with my full time job in IT. My coworkers helped me through my studies and graduated with high honors..So people with learning disabilities can succeed in school if they get the chance and opportunities to learn it on their way!

same in Brazil, we can't choose our classes so we need to learn literally everything at once for years.. the same thing over and over

Im so glad to be a college student during this and not high school or younger. In college online class has felt barely any different from doing in person because i feel like college is 20% class time and 80% studying/homework. But in highschool I spent my entire day at school and my friends and extra curriculars were everything to me, I would have beeb devastated if my high school marching band had to cancel our season, or if we didnt get to go on our school trips, or if we had to cancel prom and other things like that. In college none of that matters. My heart goes out to all the kids out there conquering school during this!

I live in a low income area and when I was in Highschool (class of 2013) there was a backpack program where certain kids would take home food to live on during the weekend. That, in my opinion, is the only reason we should be in school. For those who can’t make it and those who are in bad situations

I am SO glad to be done with school..I did really well in elementary school (surprise surprise because I went to 5 different ones over the 7 years) As soon as I got to middle school I just tanked. Especially with science and math. Not one teacher took the time to try and help me understand. I just suddenly saw letter thrown in with numbers and it was so overwhelming. I would sit and cry at my homework for hours and hours because I just did not understand it. When i went to the school about going down to an easier math class because i was struggling and had Ds and was constantly on the brink of failure they told me NO because i wouldn't get into college. So literally just set up for failure. I didn't get a better math or science grade than a D until Junior year of HIGH SCHOOL because i elected to take astronomy for science which was the only class in our school where you started with an f at the beginning of the semester but everything you did would add points to your grade. Getting a 50/100 on a test didn't mean you failed but 50 more points were added to your grade. So you didn't have to be a good test taker and you truly could get a good grade doing your best!

The way that my school district is doing is, everyone is doing online school for at least the 1st quarter. And then they will see if we all can go back for the 2nd quarter. Everyone is online but the special ed kids are there in person.

I relate to your guys' experiences. I got diagnosed with an IEP in math and reading and writing in 2nd grade. I tested out of reading and writing pretty fast but I always struggled with math, all through high school and college. It was definitely a struggle. I think a lot of mine was anxiety-related because I would get really awful test anxiety (didn't matter the subject) and would perform badly even if I studied really hard. I had a really tough time and had to retake some math classes but it also taught me to advocate for myself. When I started high school, the special ed math I was taking was too easy for me and not challenging enough, so I asked my special ed advisor to move me into freshman-level math sophomore year and they were able to give me extra time and make the class a pass/fail, so that I wouldn't be set up for failure lol. It helped a lot and I'm glad I made myself do that because otherwise, I would've had an even harder time in college

Mom of three. I've said since my oldest started school that the only thing kids spread willingly are germs. It used to be a joke. Now? I can't imagine being a teacher, especially with little ones, who need the interactions, to learn and encourage empathy and compassion, but now have to learn safety and distance. It's so sad.

I work in special ed. I can handle being home most of the time because I’m an adult, but the kids i work with that need the social interaction, and can’t get anything out of online learning. That part has deteriorated my mental health to no end. I have not been able to actually do my job for half a year now and it makes me cry quite often.

Both my kids are doing virtual learning. They had their first day of school today. I know my 15 yr old will be be OK, but I do worry about my 9 year old. He was just diagnosed with ADD last year and he really thrives on being face to face with his teacher. I really hope this all works out. I am so ready for this pandemic to just be over! 😭

I have a mix of both of your experiences! I was in reading help just for kindergarten, if I remember that correctly. But i had ADD and never had additional help in the classroom. I was in difficult classes going forward, but i didnt always get good grades. I have memories of me talking to myself during math tests to try and work it out in my brain. That sorta got me in trouble, but the teacher also sorta knew it was me just trying my best. My reading level improved, but for the life of me I couldn't focus on books, in home or in the classroom. I also felt like I knew nothing about what people were talking about with grammar, and it seemed like i was really dumb, just my own perspective of myself. High school made it worse. Because kids don't understand, and I was also not socially very able to get people's cues as well, making middle/high school seethingly traumatic because I was easy prey. So much so, I was also reliant on school to mentally nourish me because my parents were apart from the time I was 5 years old, and also I got left home alone a lot, at either one of my parents' houses... one of my biggest issues now for me in college is working out my attachment disorder issues. Because I seriously am a mix of anxious and disorganized. Like Janelle, I'm studying psychology, and I also had to start therapy really young. And I stopped for a few years. But then started again a couple of years ago, and then had to stop after just like 2 years or so being back in therapy, with the same therapist.
I don't know if you'll see this, but I think talking about attachment style in a video would be really helpful, but maybe not, since this isn't really a psychology podcast. 💕 anyways, loved the video, I can seriously relate!!!

Hey! I'm from Scotland and love the podcast. I got 100% in every test for Spanish all year effectively and the algorithm took me down to 60% completely randomly. I was heart broken but thankfully I was given an 'A' when the certificates were ammended

I am so happy you talked about the uk grades, my friend got A’s and A* in their mock exams and teacher predicted grades but got downgraded to a C and was unable to secure her place in university and do the career she wanted. She is appealing it and hopefully they change it
