Patra encouraged Marissa to get her high school diploma, but all Marissa wanted to do was party and chat with boys on Facebook. Writing as a once troubled youth myself, I wholeheartedly support Patra in what she did. I think children and teenagers should learn about the realities of life by examples set by those around them and be guided to fully understand the physical law of cause and effect gently but unmistakably at an early age. I've spent years trying to help my sibling get their life together, but they are convinced that opportunity is just gonna fall from the sky, or someone is going to help them their entire adult life. After they were put out for basic the same thing this girl was doing, getting with an abusive partner, and going through homeless shelters they haven't changed. My prayers go to the aunt...I know that it must be hard to do that to a family member...but if you let them constantly run over you, eventually you just stop loving them. I don’t know much about the American social services system. However; I can’t help but wonder if the resentment towards her Aunt didn’t start with the grounding and making her focus on school, but when her mum died and family that she may have assumed were perfectly capable of looking after her just let her stay in the system until she basically aged out of it…
Obviously not saying she’s justified and there are tonnes of reasons why family might not be able to take in a niece, nephew, or other family member. But I can absolutely see that a child or teenager in an already wobbly emotional state would think that.

"Justice". No wonder she's wracked with guilt. Never once did she attempt to meet Marissa's needs at all, just expected her to magically come out of the System totally normal and ready to behave. Imagine feeling so unloved and so uncared for that you'd let someone pay you for s*x just to cover a phone bill.
You don't catfish your own teenage niece out of some sense of duty. That's about control. That's about not seeing her as someone you need to respect. I hope getting her out of your hair was worth it. Back to jail with you, missy.
