It’s kind of sacred from 2 sides. He best known for portraying musashi. It’s very rare even that character gets a full on portrayal in anything. If anything they create characters with musashi traits.
I guess you missed one thing, in this game you can chain Issen in two ways. 1. Damn! Going all in huh? Great way to start the morning. And speaking of, Onimusha Blade Warriors is in its own weird way a sequel and has some other unique things only in the game, like Jujudormah’s true form. Regardless, no, it’s not just you about less telegraphed moves then, I experienced the same. And no wonder I couldn’t Issen bosses in the first…onimusha 2 and 3 spoiled me it seems XD. This was pretty good and enjoyable to listen to, and Something interesting about the gifting in the Game is that, there’s still RNG involved I think. My friend and I played the game side by side doing the same things and gifting the same things and somehow ended up with different events and sections that made it hard to stay in sync with each other’s games. A VS speedrun would be tense for this I’ll tell ya. So, what’s your favorite weapon in Onimusha 2? (It doesn’t have to be a magic weapon either. It can be the rifle even, or one of the characters) I’m gonna take a look at the Japanese Onimusha Dawn of Dreams to see how much differences there is from the west, which there are a few omissions on the western version and some awful balance changes. Off the bat, the western version doesn’t have a difficulty selection when you start the Game for one.
@@AvalancheReviews well, previously, it's usually die 3 times or so to unlock easy mode for 1-3 and then hard mode unlocks after normal difficulty of course...but 4 would mark the first time (if you don't count blade warriors) in japanese that you could CHOOSE between 3 modes off the start, Beginner, Easy, and Normal difficulty. Beginner was more of a handholding or casual mode (I gave it a quick try a year ago), and easy mode is more equivalent to how easy mode would be in previous games. Normal mode here though was still easier, or dare I say, more balanced than the Western version's normal only difficulty. The western version is almost a similar situation of what happened with Dante's Awakening's normal mode being hard mode...except it was on purpose and until I look into it, might be different than JP's hard mode. For now, my discovery today playing both simultaneously has led me to discover that yes, everything has more HP in the western version's normal mode, and you take more damage (and you also don't start with any medicine which the jp version does start you with.)
I’d like to think that Gogandantis is a distant relative or ancestor of the great and legendary Sparda from Devil May Cry, or an alternate universe version of him that never became the legend we know, but believes in his mind that he is lol. I know he isn’t, but how cool would that be, to actually have the two universes coexist??
Number 2 was my favourite . The characters the trading part. I wasn't a massive fan of the main village hub area it made the world seem smaller than it was but this is still my favourite of the bunch. Also believe 3 is over rated didn't like Jean Reno his whip and the real world
Honestly Onimusha 2 may actually be my favorite game in the series, though I am still undecided on that fact since the third game offers some strong competition against it. I absolutely loved the gifting mechanic being a JRPG fan and all as it encouraged me to run around town and talk to people, that familiarity really jived well with me. I also liked the fact that every single weapon had secret techniques you could acquire throughout the game which could be used to extent your combo and get you out of tight spots, to this day it is the only game in the series to have these features as they were dropped in Onimusha 3. Sure Dawn Of Dreams sorta replaced the secret techniques but they were handled very differently in that game. I really like how Jubei plays off with all the other characters and how he's a serious samurai who is surrounded by all kinds of quirky characters and I think that brings the best out of his character, he's a no nonsense badass throughout and the game kinda makes fun of that which I really appreciate as we have seen countless samurai games starring this archetype but you never get to see them in situations like the ones Jubei gets himself into and that's what gives this game so much flavor.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. So few games try for a protagonist who is aggressively self-serious and humourless to a fault then surround them with absurd bullshit, or at least few pull it off like Onimusha 2. The cast includes a hedonist, a nihilist, a misogynist and a traitor who all play off Jubei well.
I didn't play this one until after 3.....but when I I got to it I fell in love with it. This and blade warriors were great. I love how ridiculous they both were. I want more onimusha. I didn't buy the HD version for PC ,Xbox, and PlayStation for nothing. Onimusha forever!
Jared. As a person that played through the entire game with OPL + HDD, the only time I had any sign of slow down was during massive fights with alot of particles. The example you provided in your video never actually occurred, so it has to be OPL version or hard drive related and I couldn't replicate your issue.
I love this trilogy. I even love the GBA game, which is actually a pretty sweet tactical rpg, with a decent story. 3 is my fav, but 1 & 2 are about equal for me. Awesome retrospective!
I love Onimusha 2. The "Samurai dating" system has always been fun for me and Gogandantess is easily the most memorable villain in the series. Definitely cheesy and kind of goofy but so quotable in a Resident Evil 1 kind of way. I don't like Jubei as much as a character as Samanosuke but he's memorable enough and I like the journey that he goes through in this game. I also love the replay value in this game. I've played it probably a dozen times since it was released and I still haven't seen everything in the game according to the story map unlocked at the end of the game.
I thought Onimusha 1 was just solid, lacking the tension (or difficulty in general) and general quality of both Dino Crisis and Resident Evil games, but I stil enjoyed it and the soundtrack was fantastic. Is this one worth playing if I thought O1 was 7/10 at best?
BTW at 8:50, we could Issen those monsters while rolling in the first one And the Issen are quite hard on Hard mode, it's like you can perform the issen a micro seconds before being hit and micro seconds after he completed his attack. My best way to Issen is to simply running around the demons (literraly) without locking him and do a Attack with the good timing (as described previously) Since you are running, it will be like a "dodge", wand if you fail your timing, you'll end up doing a charge slash without being hit since you were running 90° from him I could complete my S rank with around 750 Issen performed and 1300 kills like that on hard mode.
From all the series that's my favourite one. Still remember when we bought ps2 back in late 2002 with Onimusha 2, silent hill 2, Max Payne and Dropship(its somewhat of a Ace combat clone). One of the best times in my life.
I think your summary is defintley enough. More ideas with this one, not all great, but definitely enough to keep it fresh. 1 will always be my favorite, but I appreciate what this one brought to the table!
How did you not bring up the 4 different playable characters you can play as based on what gifts you give them, or the branching dialogue choices or multiple different endings? Or the side missions where you have to find items to help people. Honestly your retrospectives are usually really comprehensive and well done but I found this one to be a little bit lazy honestly especially at the end when you flat out ran out of things to talk about lol
I felt the same way about samurais destiny when I first started playing it, but after progressing it was a very good entry in the series. All three of The original releases. Even blade warriors I really got into trying to unlock everything.

i’m gonna make an onimusha petition pls sign it i’ll post the link once i have it up!
Number 2 was my favourite . The characters the trading part. I wasn't a massive fan of the main village hub area it made the world seem smaller than it was but this is still my favourite of the bunch.
Also believe 3 is over rated didn't like Jean Reno his whip and the real world
Great minds I believe do think alike 😁
Onimusha 1-3 we're good. That one with Jean Reno was pushing it tho.
That was the best part of it tho lol. It’s so crazy
This game is still enjoyable and repayable even till this day
I love the cheese of this one, played it when I was 7. Good shit👌🏿 scared the piss out of me tho
The cheese was strong
Wasn’t Spike from Cowboy Bebop based on the same actor? Must have been a cool guy.
Yusaku Matsuda, famous Japanese actor. Same signature hairstyle as those characters
JUBEII!!!!! I hope you do onimusha blade warriors!!! Game was soooo fun and soooo underrated
Definitely my favorite in the series. Branching story, that little village in the beginning that let you buy stuff. Just a good time.
Jared. As a person that played through the entire game with OPL + HDD, the only time I had any sign of slow down was during massive fights with alot of particles. The example you provided in your video never actually occurred, so it has to be OPL version or hard drive related and I couldn't replicate your issue.
Very well might be the drive, but I'm on the 1.0 release of OPL so it's up to date.
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah. Additionally might be running different settings within OPL that you may not. The magnificent world of hacked devices 😅.
I love this trilogy. I even love the GBA game, which is actually a pretty sweet tactical rpg, with a decent story. 3 is my fav, but 1 & 2 are about equal for me. Awesome retrospective!
May be time to upgrade your HDD to a SSD.
The best in the franchise
I love Onimusha 2. The "Samurai dating" system has always been fun for me and Gogandantess is easily the most memorable villain in the series. Definitely cheesy and kind of goofy but so quotable in a Resident Evil 1 kind of way. I don't like Jubei as much as a character as Samanosuke but he's memorable enough and I like the journey that he goes through in this game. I also love the replay value in this game. I've played it probably a dozen times since it was released and I still haven't seen everything in the game according to the story map unlocked at the end of the game.
I love your onimusha videos! DO THE THIRD ONE PLS
Oh don't worry that one's coming. It's my favorite entry.
@@AvalancheReviews dont forget to mention the replayable things and the new tecniques 👌
I just played this game through last week for the first time in years. I forgot how strange this game was.
Been a fan for years, always said Onimusha was better than DMC, unpopular opinion... don't care. Samurai>Emo dude with guns.
What about an emo guy who fights like a samurai like Vergil from DMC lol
It was your comment about listening to Girl's Generation before BTS for me!!! 😻😻😻
YES!!! GG is so fucking good!
@@AvalancheReviews Hands down! I swear the first K-pop dance I ever learned in its entirety was Gee!!! 😹😹😹
Fun fact, I was playing it since 2 weeks trying to make Hard S rank wich was completed yesterday.
The timing of this video couldn't be so perfect.
BTW at 8:50, we could Issen those monsters while rolling in the first one
And the Issen are quite hard on Hard mode, it's like you can perform the issen a micro seconds before being hit and micro seconds after he completed his attack.
My best way to Issen is to simply running around the demons (literraly) without locking him and do a Attack with the good timing (as described previously)
Since you are running, it will be like a "dodge", wand if you fail your timing, you'll end up doing a charge slash without being hit since you were running 90° from him
I could complete my S rank with around 750 Issen performed and 1300 kills like that on hard mode.
From all the series that's my favourite one.
Still remember when we bought ps2 back in late 2002 with Onimusha 2, silent hill 2, Max Payne and Dropship(its somewhat of a Ace combat clone). One of the best times in my life.
The first felt too much like RE with swords this second had more personality
i hope to god capcom re-releases this
I love this game. Actually just picked up onimusha 1 & 2.
I think your summary is defintley enough. More ideas with this one, not all great, but definitely enough to keep it fresh. 1 will always be my favorite, but I appreciate what this one brought to the table!
I really hope that they also make a remake of this game and the rest of the series. Maybe we will get also a new part?
How did you not bring up the 4 different playable characters you can play as based on what gifts you give them, or the branching dialogue choices or multiple different endings? Or the side missions where you have to find items to help people. Honestly your retrospectives are usually really comprehensive and well done but I found this one to be a little bit lazy honestly especially at the end when you flat out ran out of things to talk about lol
I felt the same way about samurais destiny when I first started playing it, but after progressing it was a very good entry in the series. All three of The original releases. Even blade warriors I really got into trying to unlock everything.
Best game ever made, no question. An absolute masterpiece.
