There was no known threat to warrant guns being brought and it seems like this story was basically first contact, so there was no thoughts to hostile extraterrestrial life. Guns would only be a possible issue, runs the risk of someone cracking under the isolation and killing themselves or others, or someone could use the weapons in a moment of rage and break something important or murder someone. No one expected spider-slugs, so in the mind of the people running this mission guns where going to be no help and a possible issue on a mission that couldn't afford them.
