I don't know if it will be of any consolation to you, but I can tell you that thanks to your channel I have returned with enthusiasm to the world of airbrushing.
I have learned many tricks thanks to watching your videos and I have significantly improved my technique.
Your content is quality and you explain very well how to do things, but you must keep in mind that unfortunately there are many more people interested in "absurd" content than in technical videos, people use RUclips more as entertainment than as a learning tool, And that means that channels like yours have those numbers and others have millions of views.
Cheer up, I hope you continue transmitting your knowledge to us and thank you for doing so.

I am retired and disabled, got bored doing nothing so I started working with leather. Got a cheap air brush kit to stain my leather. I used to paint a lot when I was young and thought I woud try my hand at creating art work with the air brush. Saw your video and you inspired me. It's been a year, and I completed my 100th painting, mostly portraits. I enjoy the videos and I learn so much, thanks.

Everything you said about custom work for bikers really opens up wounds for me.. all the crap I got from dreamers who think the crash hats and the like can be done for a pint of beer is exactly why I stopped custom work. This is a great insight vid in the fact that its all happened to me .. .. I need therapy now.. lol.

LOL it comes with experinence i'v been painting 47 years and would never undertake a custom job except under my terms . I made a mate come in every weekend to prep his Lambretta and it took 13 months he realised what takes (no artwork) . 2 yeaars down the line and it looks absolutely mint. Also i just painted my own helmet and like you say nightmere and it was simple design and for the time and effort i could have earned a grand easily . I do work for a RUclipsr but rest assured i charge him but he's got an average off 4.5k subscibers . Nothing in life is easy .

Great video. I've recently started my custom paint journey and the trial and errors of being self taught is definitely hard. RUclips videos from knowledgeable people like yours have helped tremendously and I am truly and grateful those kinds of videos exist.
It's quite challenging doing custom paint while being inexperienced and a clinical perfectionist. I always delve into the procrastination/perfectionism loop where I delay starting projects because Im afraid they won't end up perfect to my own unreasonable standards. I'm in awe every time I see cars with nice flat clear coats and such knowing how much skill and time goes into it.

My second paint job was a Shoei Neotec II, a modular helmet. I was so happy at that time, first customer outside my friend circle, first serious money... until I had to strip it down to bare shell becouse the thing was unmaskable, cutting out rubber seals included. That was the easy part, but reassemble it... I literally cried, and I'm 35.

Don't get me wrong sanding, filling, priming, base coat, more sanding, artwork clearing. That's just part of it. It's the details in the artwork and tips and tricks to get the finished product for me. Keep the videos rolling out Rob! God Bless from the states my friend!

Oh my. You brought back such memories. By trade, I am a photographer and used to concentrate on weddings. I follow your channel because airbrushing is a new hobby. Just for me and what I like and no money changing hands. However, as a wedding photographer, I had some impossible assignments. Meeting a bride for the first time who takes up all three cushions on a three-seater sofa and then says “Make me look beautiful!” Is soul destroying. (Plus, the camera adds poundage!) So I left weddings to those who thrive on challenge. Now I concentrate on Landscapes. You have to find that niche that works. Mind you, I wonder how many airbrush artists have used solvent based paints on cheap polycarbonate crash helmets!

I used to custom build guitars and wind guitar pickups. I remember starting out people used to think "home made" not "custom built" and only wanted to a "hobby home made" price. Consequently found it hard to find the right customer. But I did by making one for free for a pro-player who shall remain nameless which got the instrument noticed and the right price for time and materials was no longer a problem and ended up with a two year waiting list making instruments my way individually to suit the individual at my price.

It’s only down to you my old mate that I have continued with the airbrush. You have a work ethic and patience second to none. You are without any doubt the best tutor out there. You say it as it without the bull shit or trying to portray it as a black art. I had the same when I was custom building guitars and hand winding guitar pickups. No one really wanted to help you start out and everything was shrouded in secrecy. Then when it comes to charging out - it’s a bloody minefield. At first when your work is not known people just think of the guitar as hoeing “home made” and that’s how much they want to pay. It took a long time to educate the people out there that each instrument is built to order and to your style of playing. If they still wanted to pay the couple of hundred for a factory built plywood guitar then go ahead but my price is my price take it or leave it. Before I stopped I had a waiting list of 2 years.

I intend to go down this path you’re on, but strictly airbrushing, pin-striping and lettering, no clear coat, no body work, just artwork only.
I’m glad you gave stats on your viewer ratios, favored topics and the hours you put in, very valuable information.

Wise words Rob, i had exactly the same issues with customers doing my leatherwork, but sadly i didn't get any advice when i started, i underpriced everything and took on jobs that ended up costing me money and time, if you haven't got a business head, then its tough, i felt i had to explain to the customer why a item costs what it did and how many hours it took to make. I even decided not to mark up the hides and the hardware just to try to bring the price down for the customer..I've sent items to customers and not been paid, but thats my fault for being to trusting and thinking everyone is honourable lol.. Most customers are fantastic and its a pleasure to make their falcons a hood, but when you get a complete nob head, its unbelievably stressful and takes the joy out of your passion, i've lost my mojo a few times, it's hard to get motivated sometimes. .Airbrushing for me is just a hobby at the moment, i'm still struggling with the basics, if i did manage to do a artwork, i'd have to pay the customer to take it away..😅

Yeah, back in the day (my day was the 80s) I would under cut myself for fear of missing out on the work. I learned that if they can't afford you, it is what it is. You don't go to the grocery store and try to haggle over a gallon of milk. That's why I loved working at Death Row Motorcycles. I would give the owner Frank the price I needed for me, and he had no problem jacking it up get to get his cut. And if I brought in a client of my own, I kept it all unless it went over a grand, then I threw him 10%.

Maybe do painting on a panel or portrait during a live and let subscribers watching live, bid on painting to help with coins, like steve leahy or scott Mackay or what ever maybe do a giveaway or something for members or we can bit on tutorial portrait paintings or something. Mate buy a kitten, I have seen 30 second cat videos with 10 million views. Or maybe get hot lady in a bikini to stand next to you while you’re airbrushing away, millions of views for sure. 😊. Keep your chin up my friend.
