I simply can’t believe it’s 40 years old. It’s still so contemporary.
So being 4WD and turbocharged isn't the mold for most performance cars today?
I'm not really sure where you're going with this.
Such a beautifully made video, enjoyed every second. Have to say, doesn’t matter if your a jdm fan, German fan, American fan etc etc the Audi Quattro is one car that deserves respect from every true petrol head. Such an epic car 👌🏻 and I am not the greatest fan of German cars. Thanks for the video folks
Well said.
Interesting- why hate German cars?
alwyn McMath AUTO-DIDACT I have to stop using the word Hate bud , such big statement, the b7 rs4 is my all time favourite German car. Unreal machine, the German cars just don’t interest me mate, the history, what they stand for etc. There are some real beautiful amazing German cars no doubt just not cars I’d have in the garage. Jdm is where the heart is. Love the community, the history and most of all love all the true jdm hero’s 😎 I’m definitely gonna try and stop using the world hate 👌🏻
Lovely video Dan. The fog made it even more special!
these cars are the same age as myself, I can still clearly remember sitting watching them on my grannies tv driven by the likes of Walter Rohrl and Michele Mouton through the forest stages with the intriguing and incredible sound of the 5 pot spitting flames. I learnt all I could about them and never knew of anyone who had one, but for my 21st birthday bought myself an 87 ur in graphite black. The most fabulous car ever. A pure joy just to see it outside the house and always a smile upon starting it up. Driving it felt really special. Great times. Nice video well done.
I had a pearl white 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V. Most beautiful and fun car I've ever owned!
I've got a 90 20v. Totally forgotten gem.
This is art.
Everything, the car, the filmography, the music,...
Thank you !
Highly appreciate it 🙌
Even as a 5 year old in the early 80's I knew this car was from the gods! 😍
Thank you Dan for another great video and thank you Jörg Bensinger for the Audi Quattro. When it snowed last year, I took my dog for a walk in the Surrey Hills and drove my Q5 to the Pitch Hill car park. There were loads of cars parked on the road outside but I thought I'd chance the car park itself, forgetting that it was at the bottom of a hill. A now compacted snowy, virtually abandoned hill. I sheepishly parked up my Q5 and went for the walk. When we got back I could hear cars revving and tyres slipping on the compacted icy hill. One stranded car was a Range Rover Evoque. I felt numb at the fact I would be stranded miles from home with our dog if "the best 4x4 by far" was stuck. I gingerly reversed out of the space, selected drive, and gently depressed the accelerator, and to my utter amazement and relief, drove up the hill and out of the car park! It was clearly an incredible system in 1980 and has just got better and better ever since.
Love these. Even my 98 Quattro gets looks and the paint looks almost new. No rust and I see snow 5 months of every year.
Simply mind blowing.
Lots of people bog on Quattros until it's the car pulling you out of a ditch...
ahead of its time clearly
Very nice, and not a 'chaos' or 'taking one of my spoilt brat drives on the Autobahn'... praise be.
A great love letter to the Quattro. I so wanted one of these 25 years ago when they were still kinda affordable and useable as a daily. Thankyou :)
having 200bhp on our country roads is ideal because you can use all of it pretty much every where
Massive Audi fan. I was lucky to take one of these early Quattros around the back country roads of Vermont in every type of weather from hot dry summer roads to picturesque Vermont winter snow. Bought the first Allroad and loved it. Never let me down with multiple cross American road trips for years. The Allroad was so inspiring one didn't care you were in torrential rains, massive white outs or blasting through the Rockys on a perfect summer's day. In all conditions, there was always a smile on my face. Like I said, I am a massive Audi Fan. Great job on the Video and great job in general with all your PistonHead's content.
Your review style is excellent, no obnoxious music in the background and no trying to be funny. Outstanding vehicle - have not seen one on the road for many years down under.
That opening scene with the subtle idle is just perfection 👌
had mine for 19 years. never let it go. i love it, thankyou leon
That last shot from the back seats driving into the fog is really cinematic, especially with the Blade Runner type music - great job.
Exceptional video PH & Dan, thoroughly enjoyed and totally befitting of a true automotive icon
This car got me sold! I even took my drivers license in an Audi Cupe 5E. From that time on, I have had several Audis in my garage. Only once has there been a car of an other brand. That was a Porsche 911. Today I drive a W12 Audi. Just marvelous.
Great video, great car. The original quad lamp Quattro was always my favourite. A fitting tribute to an icon.
The way you describe the car while driving was like I Wright a wish list how my dream car will be, what a true icon is and how beautiful, the video as well
My dream car. If I could only own one car in the entire world, it'd be the Audi quattro.
Been waiting for this video.... I drove passed this Quattro parked up on the Bwlch Mountain on the way to work in Port Talbot Steel Works... These roads are amazing even when your driving a van to work
Love these 5 cylinder Audi's from this period, the engine noise is terrific. Had a 100CS and Coupe both 5 cylinder and drove the UR Quattro quite a few times. One of my most memorable drives was in a UR in the 80's when not so many cars on the road - 25 miles in 26 minutes all country lanes. Have a Quattro A6 now but not even close to the UR or the 5 cylinder cars. They were definitely fun times. Thanks for a great reminder.
Props, Dan. I enjoyed that a lot. 5 cylinder soundtrack very much a highlight.
I used to own this model car What a luck bastard I was.
My wife divorced me and it was brilliant.
But when my Audi was stolen I cried my eyes out.
Bring back beautiful memories. Cheers for the video.
As always such an eloquent and intelligent view of an icon. Inside and out this reminds me of my youth, and the lust and wonderment I had. Thank you.
Brilliant video. Watched it... then watched it again.
Beautiful production! Happy Birthday audi quattro!
God Damnit I love these videos
I remember my dad parking his 200T next to a Quattro the first time we saw it, and talking a while to the lucky owner (who also liked the 200T of course). The Quattro though was teh truly epic one and stood for incredible innovation ...
A quality item...not spoilt by masses of ads...well done all of you 😊
Lovely review Dan..Remember seeing one of these outside my local shops in the 80's.
Naturally I drooled all over it!! It looked so out there to this teenager..
Thanks for a great video. I feel so privileged that as a young man (completing my engineering qualifications), I worked for Audi back in the early to mid eighties - during the wonder years of rallying and was lucky enough to drive many Ur quattro cars (I even had a short drive in a Sport, which was epic).
The standard car was, as you said, a revelation to drive and unlike anything I'd driven before.
I spent much of the 80's at rallies, with the sound of the straight 5 ringing through the forests, as the Marshall's blew their whistles to warn spectators to get off the track.
Some cars will always be iconic and I'm not at all surprised that the car still drives well by modern standards.
Although I now own one of the dream cars from my youth, a quattro or better still a Sport would definitely be part of my ideal collection.
Wow, 40 years - hard to believe!!
great video, capturing the essence of the car and the passion it evokes. Had my first ride in one (a 20V RR)in 1996, but it was 16 years later before I finally owned one - my 1990 20V (search for “ur quattro crown range”for a video of the car over the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka, New Zealand). I still own it, 111,000 miles, totally rust free, and an absolute joy to drive.
What an absolutely great video. The fog, although undesirable at the time, gave it a real moody feel which somehow suits the car and added to Dan's words and presentation (which were stellar as usual) made for a real treat. This is honestly a brilliant channel, please keep the content coming!
What a car and what a fitting place to film the video.
One of the worst decisions I ever made was to turn down the offer of a swap of a 10v Quattro for my substantially newer 325i Sport in 1990. It was the first turbo car I'd driven and the lag put me off. I remember being unimpressed with the brakes too. You live and learn, what an icon they are today.
Great tribute vid mate👍 God i was 14 when these came on the go and the sound of that 5 cylinder blasting through the forrests watching the rallying on tv ill never forget, that car REALLY IS a motoring icon. Always lusted after one but too expensive now. Got myself an 850 t5 as a consolation now though and that 5 cylinder soundtrack is great as well. All the best mate👍
I adore this review series. Cant wait to see more classic sportscars. Escort Cossie maybe?
First saw it at the 1980 Motorshow at NEC and loved it then and still love it today. Wish they still made this model and spec today.
Videography is on point 👌 and the car itself well its doesn't need to have introduction... Fantastic video 👍
when i was 20 years in 2010 bought my second a Audi 100 sedan from 1989 with the 2.3E 5 cylinder NA 138 hk and sadly no quttro system but that 5 cylinder engien god i mis that sound! that boss moment in mi life.
ty for a good video here from Denmark
great video, pitched just right! stands out in the sea of automotive youtube for all the right reasons. More please!
Amazing car!! Built to last when Audi was focusing on quality.
I LOVE these vids! honestly they are the best car vids coming out now cause you guys are still keeping it real :) keep up the good work!
the soundtrack of my dreams has never been music but the noise of five cylinders firing one after another...
Superb video of a true icon.
I loved the driving through the mist environment ❤
❤❤❤ Lovely, the best overview video with Quattro.
Your video literally put a smile on my face!! 😊
Great stuff, Dan. I actually think the fog added to the vid, seemed appropriate that the weather wasn't perfect 👍🏻
Fabulous video, information and a wonderful trip down memory lane!
What a sensible, intelligent video, I really enjoyed it. A credit to you and your team. I have a 2004 Bentley Continental GT that I love and you’re correct it owes it provenance to the original Audi Quattro.
Beautiful ... I was a kid when this car was on roads.
I absolutely love these cars.
Love it.... 😍. A true classic and genuine legend.
Please flow up with a MD ur and a ur20v (pearl white please!)
This is Audi.Quattro and 5 cylinder.So distinctive
Very nicely made video. You done justice for this car 👍
My childhood favourite car.
I owned an 83 quattro in 85 till 89 one of my all time favorite cars.
Nice review, I'm in love with my 89 MB Quattro, my heated seats dont work, which is just as well in Perth Australia
The GOAT of the Automotive Engineering Marvel bar none
Great video. Such detailed driving impressions... PH TV needs more subscribers!
Such a well made film 🎥👌
My mother had a bright orange mk2 Passat GL5 with the 2.0 10v. When the back box rotted out I said I had one that would fit..well I made it fit anyway. She was horrified with the sound at first but after a week she loved it. Even without a turbo it was a lovely flexible engine. If the IDI diesel lump in my T4 ever dies I'd be awfully tempted to put a straight five petrol in it.
A lovely original Quattro with the Analogue dash, I have always been in love with the sound of a 5 cylinder....I'm sure lots of you will disagree but if it were mine I'd have to fit the later wheels they gave it a much more purposeful stance...
Great report!
I personally have never driven the Quattro. I own a 1983 coupe,a 1984 GT Coupe and a 1986 Coupe,love the cars
Great, great video.
I can remember its release, back in 1980.
Compared to the standard Audi Coupe, the quattro model was considerably more expensive.
You had to be quite well heeled to afford one.
Then there was that sublime Quattro Sport version, which cost nearly three times the price of a standard Quattro.
Only 200 were ever manufactured, and your chances of seeing one on British roads, is as likely as picking up a winning lottery ticket from the pavement.
Great video and a lovely car. Thanks.
Thank you Harry Medcalfe for lending out your vehicles for great motoring journalists
I currently have the 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro...love that older car in the video.
fun little car.
Quattro is an epic car. Would love to own one.
I also love to own a Jensen FF. 4WD luxury car from 1966.
cool vid guys! such a legend machine! Great to see they are still cruising our roads.
Had a later model ur quattro that was the last of the 10v and loved it. Unfortunately it was pre galvanisation and hence was getting expensive to upkeep towards the end of my ownership in the late 90s. 😢
Very good video...
Very good car...even for a Lancia fan.
Very good review,
Good content. Cars I actually am curious to learn about. Not like the typical automotive press who have become paid mouthpieces for the manufacturers spewing the same power point presentation on every video.
Great film!!!!
Great review
Such a great video, about a cracking car.
You missed out the source of the 5 cyl turbo engine, the 200T a gem in its own right
The 1990 G-Reg version was a 2.0 20v with the green digital dash..That would be the weapon of choice..and in the "Gene Hunt-Tornado Red" of course:). This particular Dark Grey one is mint though....
Always want that one but could only afford none turbo x reg 1921cc carb model still 5 pot and Y reg 2.2 injection 5 cylinder loved them both
Epic car.
I currently have two Audi quattro cars a TTS and an RS5. I drive the RS5 nd the wife the TTS. The RS5 has great power however I dislike the 8 speed auto. I would prefer if it had a dual clutch transmission. Anyway that is a first world problem. Carry on with your great reviews. Cheers from the Great White North.
Very nice🙂
I used to own a 1986 coupe gt manual and drove it for about 12 years. One of my current cars, an S4 3.0 with dsg is 458hp and too overpowered vs the old coupe which was only 110hp but still fun to drive.
Those coupes were much lighter than today's cars and weighed around 2500 pounds for the front wheel drive.
Good stuff. The thing that most people overlook these days is the room for 4 adults in a Quattro. Not many 2+2s can offer that today. Turbo lag was among the worst I've ever encountered though and it was all done by 5500rpm. Later 20v motors were much better. Quattro offered incredible point to point speed in all weathers an indisputably great car. No Quattro no Integrale, no Escort Cosworth, Carrera 4, Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Evo and the rest. Was it the first car to introduce box wheel arches?
Oh! And don't forget mentioning it's 40 years old!
Hey ! You're up and down my local Valley, Bwlch mountain, Nant y moel.
Quality!
This very same car (same number plate) is on Harry's Garage now!
Must be doing the jurno rounds.
Still a bewt ! the S2's were a a bit of a fave as well.
Good vid, however, considering this is an anniversary homage real pity that halfway through he did not get into a late 20 valve model to end the piece by telling us how the cars were and felt at the end of production! Was expecting him to do just that halfway through.
To all audi rs owners I wish you all the best
I owned a B5 S4 Avant Bcuz of that car! 🙏🏼
Wasn't the Quattro the first car to be turbocharged in Group 4/rallying?
