    1. Maldini
    2. Beckenbauer
    3. Baresi
    4. Scirea
    5. Nesta
And all of them were elite ballers, dribblers.. They were so well positioned that as saying goes 'If I need to tackle it means I have already made a mistake'
Apart from Nesta in this list all the other four were orchestra of attack from the back line and could easily play any position in back four or even DM, they were that insane and well drilled. 😊

As someone in his 50s, and have seen all those defenders mentioned in the video.
Note: Beckenbauer, who is the greatest libero, but is NOT a defender despite playing in the defensive space of the pitch. Back in those days, the libero was the spare man to "sweep up" after the defenders does the actual defending. Just like Pirlo is not a defensive midfielder despite playing in the defensive midfield space. He is the spare man in midfield who "sweeps up" after the likes of Gattuso, Ambrosini, etc does the actual defending; and then dictates the play.
    1) Baresi
Greatest centre defender of all time, and second greatest libero of all time.
    2) Nesta
Second greatest centre defender of all time, and also a world class libero.
    3) Maldini
Greatest defender of all time, greatest left defender of all time, and the third greatest centre defender of all time. Also a world class libero.
    4) Scirea
Only managed to see the last 4-5 years of his career.
    5) Gentile
Only managed to see the last few years of his career.
Yes, no one who has seen these 5 defenders actually consider Cannavaro better than any of them. Yes, Cannavaro is a world class defender, and yes, is in the conversation for 6th place.

    • @daniellow4511
      @daniellow4511 Год назад +1

@@beastunleashed657 Based on the early catenaccio system, liberi (plural of libero) were midfielders that were tasked to drop deep to assist defenders. That is why they have better ball skills, long passing qualities, vision, etc.
Beckenbauer himself started as a midfielder/winger. If I recall correctly, it was called "attacking defender" or "defending midfielder" by certain journalists back in the 70s.
I would consider it a "holding midfielder" in terms of position on the pitch, with the freedom to drop deep below the defensive line or move forward above the defensive line but still below the midfield line.
In classic catenaccio, the formation would be 1-3-3-3, where Cesare Maldini (as the 1) was one form of this libero. As for Beckenbauer, he would be the 1, in a 3-1-3-3 or 4-1-3-2 or the variants.
