    Thank you so much for acknowledging Judith Barsi. I haven't watched the video yet so idk if you mention it in detail, but for anyone who's curious: Judith was the VA of Ducky and she had all the money she made stolen by her father and was eventually murdered by him after going on a coke-induced murder-suice. Rest in Peace, Judith.

    For me, the death of little foot's mom was WAY more harsh and sad than Bambi's mom death.
    The way how little foot was thinking how his mom was alive was almost exactly the same way how a little kid would react if their mother/father died making it more emotional in my opinion.
    And also, when I was a little kid I ALWAYS wanted to see a T-Rex being part of the good guys and that is why I was so happy about chompy being created...of course, that's is when I was a little kid, now I want a T-Rex to norms necessary be good, just get represented as an unstoppable force o nature that can win at least once.
    But then again, now the velociraptor is my favorite and I wonder what would they with them...please let it be good.

      For the record, there WAS going to be a moment in Bambi where Bambi would set down next to his mother's body and cry until his father shows up and takes him away, but they decided against it cause it was too much. It served as the inspiration for the similar scene in The Lion King, I think. Some people believe they should have kept it but I say it works well enough without it. Of course I don't DISLIKE the first Land Before Time... but it's a bit too slow for me. The mom dying and the depression afterwards were the only scenes that I liked because they got a response from me and were done well, I honestly thought the movie was boring aside from those moments. And I definitely won't watch the sequels, they're not worth it.

      When I was a little boy I used to love T.Rex and Velociraptor because they were scary but nowadays I just see them as the cliched overused villain or hero dinosaurs that are now repetitive boring etc (thanks to the Jurassic Park Franchise even though I love it)
      I now love two species an early ceratopsian Pisttacosaurus and the large relative to velociraptor Dakotaraptor
      This is my top 3
      1st place: Pisttacosaurus and Dakotaraptor

    Oh, Judith Barsi...truly, one of voice acting's biggest catastrophes. Oh, not because of her acting, she did a wonderful job in both Don Bluth films she was in!
    I speak of her tragic murder at the hands of an abusive father. She was a beacon for new voice actors, down similar lined as the girl that played Lilo in Lilo and Stitch, and Zach Callison from Steven Universe. And yet, she was sadly snuffed out before she even had a chance to take off. Who knows, maybe she would've taken up roles that other actresses had to take up; such as Darkwing Duck's daughter in Darkwing Duck, or Timmy Turner in Fairly Odd Parents. Hell, she might've even become the voice of Lisa Simpson later on down the road if she stuck around through the 90s.
    Sadly, we may never know because of that tragic murder. RIP, Judith, your candle may be snuffed, but the warmth of your flame lingers throughout eternity.

      But dogs are hell of a lot more closely related to humans than either of them are to dinosaurs - both dogs and humans belong to the clade Boreoeutheria, which encompasses anything more closely related to humans than to elephants and/or anteaters (or, alternatively, the common ancestor of humans and whales, and all of its descendants), whereas dinosaurs belong to the clade Sauropsida (same as modern reptiles and birds), in contrast to the Synapsida clade which mammals belong to.

    In my opinion the scene with the cherry really serves a purpose: show how heart-wrecked Littlefoot actually is by the death of his mother. Picture this: any dinosaur in its right mind would have eaten the cherry if only to show appreciation for the gesture of getting the cherry after the little guy has done such an effort for it.

  • @SuperBabySimba
    @SuperBabySimba 7 лет назад +104

    To be fair, The Land Before Time's creators puts much much more emphasis and detail into Littlefoot's mother's death than Disney put into Bambi's mom's. The latter is more implied than actually experienced, whereas we get to see every moment of Littlefoot's mom dying and she died in front of her son's eyes unlike Bambi's case. That scene is waaaay heavier and I think that cutsey scene after it was called for, even if it does come out of nowhere. After all, the audience surely included not only young children but also very young toddlers. I don't remember being upset when I saw it in theatres but I most likely was as I was only four or five years old and very close with my own mom.
    From that first view in addition to the first T-Rex attack, I only remember vividly that moment when Littlefoot licks the rock wall thinking it's his mom after happily running afteer his shadow. That was so cruel and disturbing. But kind of bearable after that cute scene in between. I mean, my gosh was that moment with that Pterodactyl baby who offered Littlefoor its cherry in hopes to cheer him up, soooo precious. I actually feel bad for that baby, every time I watch that scene, because it didn't succeed and was so disappointed. Add to that Littlefoot's depression which was also very much pointed out in it... So also, to be fair, even that scene isn't as trallallaa-happy-happy-happy as the Bambi spring scene. :)

    • @SwiftNimblefoot
      @SwiftNimblefoot 8 лет назад +13

      I think the only time I saw a studio not bring back a character because of a dead actor was with Heath Ledger's Joker, and that"s only because everyone felt no-one could repeat that performance. I mean, otherwise? Dumbledore, the Oracle all got replaced, and they rewrote the Crow so each sequel could have been played by a different dude. And that's only good movies - tons of bad movies replaced all the main characters with new and not even similar actors in sequels. Home Alone 3, maybe?

    Hi, yes, geologist and palaeontologist here. Water DOES pool on top of tar, because tar is denser than water. That's why the animals at Rancho La Brea, the tar pits in Los Angeles, got trapped: they weren't dumb and waded into tar, they thought they were wading into a normal pond when they got trapped in the sticky tar seeping up at the bottom of the pond and died of exhaustion trying to free themselves, starvation, or exposure.
    Additionally, the dinosaurs of these movies are INCREDIBLY retro... For being made in the 1980s, the dinosaurs (not just of this film, but of popular culture in general) are far behind where scientists were in their understanding of what they were like. Many of them are pretty directly based on (or perhaps ripped off from...) the artworks of Charles R Knight, who painted dinosaurs in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Despite working with information and ideas palaeontologists now know to be inaccurate, he was incredibly talented at making prehistoric animals look real and believable, doing animal things; Knight is nothing short of the greatest and most influential palaeoartist of all time, because of the sheer artistic talent of his works and the massive influence of them. Pick up something involving dinosaurs from the 80s or earlier and I PROMISE you there will be at least one direct rip-off/homage to Knight's body of work. Check out some of his paintings and sketches and you'll see just how similar some of the animals are, the Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and tottering vertically-posed Tyrannosaurus especially.
    At least Bluth made the dinosaurs active and fast-paced animals overall; dinosaurs WERE warm-blooded but in the 1980s there was still a fair bit of debate about it - even today there are some who object to the idea, but it's clear that dinosaurs had fast metabolisms and active lifestyles.

      hmm, good rankings. I grew up with 1-10 (don't think I want to see the others). Even as a kid, I didn't like Time of Great Giving, I hated Journey to Big Water and Great Longneck Migration, and I kinda liked Stone of Cold Fire just for the villain, though I doubt it holds up. I thought The Big Freeze, The Mysterious Island, Saurus Rock, and The Great Valley Adventure were all good given that the circumstances that they were aimed at a younger audience than the first film. I only half-remember Journey Through the Mists, though from what I do remember, it is the best of the sequels.

    To be fair to the first movie, it was supposed to be a lot darker and more intense but the studio forced Don Bluth to chop the film up and make it into a more kid friendly flick. It lost about 20 minutes of footage(19 fully animated scenes and a few minor cuts), and the scenes in the last act are out of order.(Littlefoot was to find the Valley after they split up, which makes his sudden determination to help his friends make more sense.) I heard a rumor that Don Bluth has the original, uncut version. But IDK for sure on that one.

    A little correction, there`s no such thing as a "pterodactyl" , they`re called pterosaurs and Petrie is specifically a Pteranodon.And Littlefoot`s an Apatosaurus.And there`s nothing undignified about Chompere`s parents retreating from their, in real life even large predators will run away from their prey if their overpowered or outnumbered, never mind the fact that an Apatatosaurus,Triceraptops and Stegosaurus would be anything but easy prey even for a T rex.

      My favorite sequel was “the Time of the Great Giving”, because it expands on the themes of the first film, while not ruining the magic of the original characters. It even at one point gives a character arc to Cera’s Father, Toppsy. Another thing to point out is that, like RaisorBlade said, it deals with the themes of Bullying 1000x better than “Cool Cat saves the Kids”. Also, if you guys ever feel like watching this on a holiday like Thanksgiving, go right ahead, it’s the perfect sequel to watch on any holiday, or any kind of day.

    I found the tribute to Judith Barsi as really touching and important. I also really liked and respected what you said about how they shouldn't have continued or continued differently. You showed you really cared about something very tragic and handled it with tact I don't feel just anyone would or could. That little girl brought such life and charm and sweetness to her characters despite what she was being put through and many still find joy in the movies and characters she helped create. It brakes my heart what she went through and her painful end. She was so young but had so much talent. But I guess the stars that shine the brightest are the first to go out. I just hope her and her mother found there own Great Vally.

    • @rattis
      @rattis 7 лет назад +26

      I feel the same way. What's especially disrespectful about the sequels and the re-casting of Ducky is that the character was, after Judith was cast, partially based on the little girls actual personality. The "Yep yep yep" for instance was something that Judith was known to say, as her sort of very own catchphrase. And when Don Bluth heard it he incorporated it into the script and the character, as well as her general habit of repeating herself. So every actress to play the role of Ducky afterwards essentially makes an impersonation of Judith Barsi. And that, to me, is just not very respectful. Ducky essentially IS a little green dinosaur version of Judith, and since she can't play the part anymore, I really feel that nobody else should.

    4:26 Interesting thing about this scene is that Don Blooth didn't want it in the film. He wanted to cut straight to Little Foot mourning his mother's death, but executive producer Steven Speilberg was adamant that they not scare children with this movie. So the scene with the pterodactyl's fighting over the cherry, and the old dinosaur comforting Little Foot were added. Little Foot's mother was also supposed to have a more gruesome fight with the T-Rex, but a lot of the scenes were cut once again because of Speilberg.

    Technically the baby dinos fighting over the cherry doesn't happen abruptly because before it we have the scene with Old Rooter who helps explain that Little Foot's mother will still be with him. I do believe the baby dino scene serves a point to show what Little Foot is going through with his mother's death with not wanting to eat or accept the kindness of others which can be interpreted as ways you would feel when someone you love passes away.

    *Comment on the film(s):* I do agree with you there shouldn't be any sequels, even if they had to why couldn't they do a generational narrative, like Little Foot and his friends would be teenagers or adults, and they would show the younger audiences what life was like back then and how we humans are better off...okay wow that sounded dickish, didn't it? But you get the point. However, I have to admit these sequels aren't as bad as Alpha & Omega, and now that I look back I realize the studio that made Alpha & Omega is basically ripping off Land before Time. So yeah, as much as I prefer the original film, these sequels maybe pointless but they're not awful.
    Oh and thanks for the painful ending credits...Seriously why do the good and innocent become prey to the horrors of reality? Judith was a sweet, darling voice I hold dear to my heart. Ducky and Anne Marie are my favorite animated characters from Don Bluth. Well them and Mrs. Brisby, but serious these animated movies are simply precious! :'( RIP Judith Barsi, you seriously will beloved.

    Wow! Man after reading about Judith Barsi it's pretty damn tragic and devastating.:,( Man I hope she's in a better place away from her father. Also I will say great review Bob. I think that there shouldn't have been any sequels after the 1st one because to me the way the 1st movie ended was perfect.

    As someone who grew up watching both The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven, the tribute at the end gave me shivers.
    Apparently, "Love Survives", the song at the end of All Dogs Go To Heaven, was written and recorded in memory of Barsi, since she died during the final production of the movie. Other sources say that the song was just dedicated to her, but either way, it's linked to her. Never heard the song the same way after reading that.
    As for the Land Before Time sequels, I remember watching the second and third movies when they came out, and I hated them. Looking back on them now, I think that it was the shock of them being so much unlike the original that made me hate them as much as I did. They're going for more realistic morals, not the morals of kid's cartoons at the time and since then, which were basically "DO GOOD THINGS AND EVERYTHING IS HAPPY AND PERFECT, IF NOT THEN KARMA WILL BITE YOUR BUTT!"
    I think they would have been much, much better if they cut out the singing. Not the music, just the singing. If you listen to it, many of the music scores would have done well if they were played while the characters had normal dialogue. The opening song in 2 would have been fine if they and a normal, playful conversation, and would have been great to introduce the characters to people that didn't see the first one. The music during the "Eggs" song sounds like decent "I'm plotting things" music, so just play that while the villains plan how they're gonna get some eggs.
    I didn't see 4 until years after it came out, but I recall thinking that it wasn't all that bad. Nothing that can hold a candle to the original, but still an okay watch. I lost track of the series after that. I would probably give them a chance, though..

    Don Bluth is one of my Favorites- I love the original Land before Time and the first American Tale whose songs are just beautiful. My only other favorite Land Before Time film is Stone of Cold Fire. Of Judith, I think I will treasure LBT more than I already do now though Petrie is my favorite sidekick of Littlefoot.

    Of course Topsy (Cera's dad) is that way. He lost his wife and almost every kid during the events of the first movie. I think he has the right to be a little angry.

      Its bad enough that the songs are cheesy but got worse over time. LBT 2's "One of us now" was decent, could have had better lyrics but it made sense. After that the songs became so nonsensical and petty like the "big water" song... or the "I need you" song in 4... Uragh.

    First off, great review, as always!
    Secondly... I've got to. I'm sorry, but I've got to.
    "Through the wind and the rain,
    She stands hard as a stone
    In a world that she can't rise above.
    But her dreams give her wings,
    And she flies to a place
    Where she's loved...
    Concrete Angel..."
    You couldn't find a more perfect song to describe what happened to Judith Barsi than that one. Excellent choice.

    these were the movies when I was a child that cemented my love for dinosaurs. I'm glad you talked about these films it makes me want to go back and watch them again. the first is a masterpeice and the 2 sequels after were good but not perfect, it's a shame land before time 2 ddint get the sequel treatment with speilberg at the helm like American tale 2 did. then again I'm convinced land before time 2 was an experiment to see if direct to video sequels would even work.

  • @ScratStitch
    @ScratStitch 6 лет назад +1

    From what I've gathered, the sequence with the cute birds (along with the scene that followed of the friendly dino talking about death) was added at the insistence of the studio, as they were terrified of how intense the movie was getting. The original cut--supposedly rated PG (back when that was a death sentence to an animated movie)--was ten minutes longer, and featured much more danger. In the final cut, some of the voices were done again to make the screams of the kids less "scared." Don Bluth has said that as far as he knows, the ten minutes of deleted scenes have been thrown away.

      I'm talking about how a lot of cartoon movies during the 90s had copied Disney by having unnecessary songs.
