Having been born and raised in Las Vegas in the 70's through 2000 I will say the Mirage was a game changer. When you compared it to other hotels like the Dunes, Sands, and before it was remodeled Caesars it blew every other resort casino away. The Mirage ushered in the era of the mega resort which has been place by the Uber Luxury Resorts. I loved growing up in Vegas but glad I left when I did as it has become an overcrowded mismanaged mess.
I live in Las Vegas. I used to work at the desert inn in the accounting department. I was everything from an audit clerk to vice president and controller on the strip. We sold the property to the mirage and when we did that I was very skeptical that they were really going to put a billion dollar casino on the strip. Boy was I wrong. It took one million per day for it to break even. And guess what. They did it. Simply amazing. .
I stayed at the mirage in the early 00s to attend the Consumer Electronic Show for my employer, I think it was one of my best stays in Vegas, in the dozen times or so I have been there, for previous CES shows! The room was excellent and very clean, and like you, I thought the prices were reasonable "for the strip"! Funny thing was, they accidentally put me in a cheaper room than I paid for. They told me about it as I was checking out, and said they would refund the difference, which was $50. Six weeks after I got back to England, where I live, I got a $100 check from the Mirage with a Las Vegas postmark on the envelope, and a nice handwritten apology!!! Wonder if that would happen today?!
Did you book an extra day before or after the CES dates for that year? If so the hotel might have adjusted your bill to the regular tourist rate instead of the higher convention rate.
@@johnniequinn3215 My employer was paying, so flew in the morning of the first day (he didn't care about jet-lag!), and flew out the evening of the last day. He did always say I could spend a couple of days extra, using my holiday days, but on my dime. But I thought it was too much to use MY money! :)
@@docholliday4546 Yes, and I've stayed in Vegas Hotels during Comdex and CES. My question was relative to my experience with the change in rates before, during, and after conventions. What do you have against engaging in conversation?
My husband and I, with our six week old infant daughter, first visited Mirage shortly after they opened! We never made a trip to Vegas (and we did often since it is only a 5 hour drive from our California home) after that without stopping at the Mirage for one of the shows, the fish tank, or the Tiger enclosure. The Kid loved that fish tank! When I told her that Mirage is closing and becoming the "Hardrock" she demanded that we go for "one last visit" too, and so we shall--only she's driving me this time! The Mirage had one of the FEW Vegas buffets at which I would eat (or could afford)! We will miss the Mirage--as well as the Tropicana (do you know if the Trop is going to be imploded?)...HAPPY 49th AND HOLDING BIRTHDAY, James!!
Check out Turn It Up World. They have several videos about the best inexpensive gems in Vegas. You can still find great stuff out there without breaking the bank!
@@Freakinreviews yeah my sister used to live there about 20 years ago and I remember visiting her and getting crazy good deals on food and drinks but woof, those prices now are enough to make a person never come back..
Pressure tank in toilet. Eliminates clogged toilet issues. I have 2 in my house. Lift the tank cover and you will see a black tank. Uses less water also. Mine use 8/10ths of a gallon.
My family and I saw the volcano the first week or two when it went live. It was very different then. It had more fire more, earth shattering rumbling, and the fire sort of cascaded down the mountain and went into the water. It looked like the water was on fire. The boom that started it was so loud I heard that it shattered some windows on occasion. It was heart stopping and just amazing. I remember the first time we saw it we were driving down the strip and people just abandoned their cars with the car doors open and ran towards the volcano. It was just that amazing. I think they got a lot of complaints from surrounding stores and maybe from just people in general and so they toned it down a lot over the years.
I’m from the UK and we have stayed at the Mirage a few times, the last time in 2022. It’s always been one of my favourite hotels on the strip, particularly the beautiful tropical entrance to the casino (and the tropical scent!) it’s sad to see it go, but excited to see its successor. 😊 Happy Birthday James 🎉
RIP to the Mirage! I remember when you opened. Steve Wynn's vision and dream come true. Say what you want about the guy, however, it is very true that theMirage did change Las Vegas for the better. I interviewed there, before the opening in 1989, I had graduated Bonanza HS and was PT enrolled at UNLV at the time, however, they offered me a job as a server (maybe it was waitress at that time). I have tremors, similar to parkensons, and know that i can never be a server, lol. ( i applied as house keeping). I was told that I was stupid and would regret not taking the greatest job opportunity ever given to me. No regrets ever! it took time, but completing acccounting school was way better! Plus, I has got even a better job working while completing school. Still, many great memories going to the Mirage! As for the pool, James, you have lived in Vegas long enough to know that they don't keep the old. Unless it can go to the bone yard. Its in with the new! 😢😩😭🤯🤬
James, awesome video as always, sad to see The Mirage go but hopefully it is an upgrade out there when done. And I remember you saying you are seeing someone new a few videos ago, we are seeing JaceyKlein more and more in your videos, could it be? Either way, yes or no, best of luck with whomever it is. 👋🤠
That toilet is a powerflush toilet. I have one in one of my bathrooms. Supposedly it helps prevent clogging because of the powerful forcing of air through the system. Mine was there when I bought my place and I've never been a fan of them.
To be fair the salad is $17 according to their menu, ppl are thinking the salad alone, i think it was probably 56 for both of their food plus tax and vegas charge
Happy birthday, James! 🎊🎉❤ One of my friends is currently visiting Las Vegas for the first time this week. He is there right now. He told me it was 110°. I told him not to go in June because it would be so hot 🥵😅. He didn't listen to me, but fortunately, he is still having a good time. I was going to go with him a couple of years ago and stay at The Mirage. ❤

The first time I went to Las Vegas, I stayed at the Mirage. I had such a FANTASTIC time!!! I saw Lewis Black on Saturday night and Love on Sunday. Being the Beatles' fan that I am; I took pictures of all the memorabilia they had there! The "Love" show was phenomenal!!! The sound system was marvelous!!! It was as if I could feel the music coming out of the pores of my skin. It was such an almost "religious" experience for me! I guess that's what Heaven is like...for Beatles' fans! I played the Beatles' themed slots and draw poker machines and had a BLAST!!! I am extremely sad that the Mirage is "going away"! Mirage, you will be in my heart FOREVER!!!
No way would I pay that much for lunch. We went out for dinner last night, had oysters on half shell, crawfish boil (2 lbs), extra large blooming onion, shrimp salad that was twice the size chicken salad you had and drinks. Our total bill was only $52.00 with 20% tip.

Cool video! Im going back to vegas in a few days and will get to say goodbye to the mirage. Wish i could've visited the trop before it closed, though. Thanks for sharing this, James!
I just missed you in Vegas in 1989. In april 1990 I stayed at the Holiday Inn casino across the street from the mirage which was brand new. We had a great view of the water feature at night and the Windows were clean too!
Happy Birthweek, Frank! I spent a week at the Mirage back in the mid-90's, when they still had the tigers. I'm not much of a gambler, but there's so much to see and do in Vegas, and it was a wonderful way to escape our New England winter!
Didn't stay there but had my first Vegas buffet there. I remember the drinks were included and I gave the bartender a tip when I ordered a beer, after a couple he would see me coming and have a beer ready, great service.
Not to mention the recent closure of another iconic hotel/casino, the Tropicana. We used to stay there every time we came to Vegas. We watched the Excalibur, MGM Grand, Luxor, New York New York, and Mandalay Bay all go up around it and completely dwarf the Tropicana. I think it may have been the last with the street it was on named for it. I guess I'm getting old. I still think of Fremont Street when I hear "Las Vegas Strip", hehe.
We stayed there Memorial Day Weekend way back in 2007, after a week in Sedona Arizona, and it was a HOT weekend!! We saw Siegfried and Roy and sat right up front where we could see the white tiger's fur flying off the stage!! We did have a Strip View room high up and yes, we could see the strip from our window. By the way, from other RUclipsrs, I've heard that the main hotel is staying (being renovated, of course), and the giant guitar building is going up where the volcano is located. There's a Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida (I've seen it, never stayed there) and it DOES look awesome!!

I'm hoping to sprinkle a bit more Vegas content here and there, and yeah it atmosphere at the Mirage feels like the final days of high school. No one I asked was sure how much of the Mirage will exist in the new Hard Rock, so that will be interesting to see. I really hope they can leave the pool because that's still one of the best on the Strip.

As a huge Beatles fan living across the world I'm sad I won't get to see this show as I've heard it was great but glad you were able to go and enjoy it!
I'm hoping the bring it back. A Beatles show would make MORE sense at the Hard Rock! Plus, it was conceived by George Harrison himself. How can that go away??
Happy Birthday mate. The Beatles show sounds great. I haven’t been to Vegas, so unfortunately I haven’t stayed at the Mirage either. I’ve seen a lot about it on the telly. When the blokes from Tanked went there to help with the aquarium etc. Loved your video 👍
Luckily, I'll be at the Mirage in a week to see the Beatles show before it closes. Thanks for letting me know what to expect. Also, Happy "Freakin" Birthday! 😄
An Uber driver told me about this a few months back, and the idea that came to my mind is how cool of a hat tip to the Mirage and the Vegas residents would it be if they had the iconic Hard Rock guitar coming out of the iconic volcano.
