Moog Puli Pitha-moog dal pastry with coconut filling | Bhaja Puli or Moog Shamli

  • "Moog puli" is a mung lentil based pastry stuffed with a sweet filling-we are using coconut and winter date-palm jaggery-then deep-fried and coated in a syrup. It is light, crisp, and salty-sweet. While we are using a grainy sugar coating, a jaggery based syrup is another option.
    "Moog puli", often known as "bhaja puli" (fried puli) or "moog shamli" is a type of "pithe" (pronounced "pee-thay") which is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of items prepared using rice, date-palm jaggery (only available in winter), coconut, milk, and flour. Pithe is no single dish, but a category of sweets that are part of the cooking tradition in many regions of India, dedicated exclusively to turning the season’s harvest into delectable foods.

    This is one of my grandmother signature dish she used to make it very often during winter but now because of her old age she is unable to do that I miss this puli pithe very much. But we make it differently we used to soaked the moongdal in water, then after making a fine paste put it into the pan to make it dry then the process is absolutely same as your.

    I'm commenting on this channel 4 years later. Seems like I've found yet another similar dish between Bongs and Mallus! There's a tea-time snack in North Kerala called "Unnakaya" which looks exactly like this Pitha, in fact it has a coconut filling as well! The only difference is that the "pastry" is made from half-ripe Nendran bananas instead of Moong dal.

Can u share the brand of stainless steel saucepan in the end u have used for sugar syrup it's shape looks so perfect n different from usual ones available.     Am an ardent follower of all your recipes. Every dish I tried have always turned out to be perfect. But for this one, somehow I'm not able to get the dough-like consistency in the dal. Tried adding some maida so it holds better when put in hot oil. Any totka you would suggest for this?

    Adding a small amount of lemon juice into the sugar syrup while preparing it will prevent it from forming crystals when cooled.

      We have never tried it, but I’m guessing you’ll need more fat in the dough if you plan to bake it like a tart shell. Let us know if you give it a try!

    Moog’er puli is a personal favourite. My dida used to make the best moog’er puli. She’d passed on her special recipe to my maami. But unfortunately both of them left us for their heavenly abode a few years ago, first maami and then within a year, dida. Thank you for sharing this recipe 🙏🏻😊

    How can you save the dough if it became too crumbly? I followed the recipe totally but I think I made the mistake of adding the whole 50g of rice flour instead of eye-balling.

      You would probably have to add more hot water and cook it off until it binds.

      চাল ডালের মাপের গন্ডগোলের জন্যে হতে পারে। চালের গুঁড়ো ডালের মাপের অনুপাতে কম হলে এটা হয়।
