- The Alan Moore-athon trundles along with this weeks entry being 2005's V For Vendetta. Unlike a lot of the other entries in this series this one is generally beloved. With Hugo Weaving as V along with Natalie Portman as Evie it deals with a fascist regime in England, a political uprising, issues of race, gender and sexuality, some fancy karate and of course Alan Moore hates it. Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review.

The amount of effort James puts into the Blue Harvest bit is truly astounding. He should get more praise for it because it’s funny every time.
We all see it coming, I start to feel annoyed, but the commitment to the bit makes me grin like a fool everytime.
Prefer Rodney personally, but I am lazy.
It’s the Hardest he works all week
@@erwinprado7058 you gotta work the hardest for the harvest.

As a Brit, I will never stop finding it hilarious when James and Maso spin their wheels just naming vaguely British things

That weird egg thing certainly isn’t British.
There’s a SLIGHT chance the blue harvest joke may have gotten someone if James would have gotten through it without laughing.
I was laughing myself as he said it so I understand 🤣
It got me until Blue Gum and they literally said green trivia was coming
James needs to use the same poker face he does when doing the Joker reviews in the Mason guesses the review videos.
He almost had me lol
Your comment reminded me of the time a tree burned in Africa but the fire was blue which lead to the name of the country being changed to Blue Harvest
Everyone's saying it almost got them, but they were all still laughing. It got them.
That Blue Harvest was a tour de force! Genuinely didn't see it coming.
I saw it coming when James said "the material was harvested.....".... from there I stopped the video and yelled "ahhhh you aint goin get me ya bastard"
I know it's coming. I watch every video and I know it's coming, but every time he does it I'm surprised by how he pulls it off. The loops he goes through is almost funnier than the bit itself haha
I saw it coming because your comment spoilt it.

I can say definitively that Alan Moore and Kubrick would hit each other with pint glasses
I'd pay to see that ...
Would have produced a really interesting film though...
“Oi!” (Sound of glass breaking violently)
Yes but Kubrick would do it 100 times until it was done right.
While Alan Moore would give a 10 hour statement as to why it was not done right and never should have been attempted.
I just learned the other day that Kubrick wanted to make a film set in the Warhammer 40k universe and started laying groundwork for it.
I spoke with a lady named Brendetta at work the other day. Couldn't stop thinking "B for Brendetta" in my head so that J for Jendetta joke really got me.
She was asking for that one. Poor woman.
I think the thing with London looking 'nice' under fascism is the idea that it is nice, as long as you look and act like the ruling party and ignore all those that have been persecuted to achieve that vision and that you don't step out of line or cross the wrong official.

Yup, exactly. I quite like this movie and I think it's proof that Alan Moore can occasionally be wrong
i LOVE that John Hurt was cast for Sutler. its a great contrast with him being cast to play Winston in 1984 where he plays literally the opposite character in the same universe. love it
The same universe? Maybe if both films are actually in the League of Extraordinary Gentleman universe...
I absolutely love that movie. Book too of course, but the adaptation is that good that when I read it now.... I visualise the movie.
Richard Burton's last performance I think but one of his finest IMO.
And yep, this was an incredible casting choice!
I know everyone mentions John Hurt, but I've also since realized that this irony works for Hugo Weaving as well, because in 2018 he played Thaddeus Valentine, a historian planning a coup to take over a dystopian London, in the film Mortal Engines. 😆😅
At first i thought the rodney supercut would get old fast, but now i genuinely and excitedly wait for it. Mason suggestion to put after green trivia kept the suspense going

I think of the dominos scene as more of a visual metaphor than something V actually did
I agree. It's been a while since I've seen V, but I remember there being a few different moments (the dominos being one) that I interpreted as visual metaphors of what is happening that other people took as literal things V or other characters did.
Nah, he did that for real (I was there so I can confirm)
I like to think that V slowly built the dominos over the course of the year and knocked them down when he was ready to do a train explosion
It's a trailer moment, basically.
@@ThreadBomb Well, yes, but to be fair it did also actually happen in the comic source material
I never really thought of the fact John Hurt was in 1984 which was a great casting choice. Not only does it play it perfectly but it has a great underlying humor in his casting.
I'm so happy you mentioned the lighting on the mask!! It is such a trope in filmmaking that you can't use face coverings but there are so many options with a good team!
My dad showed me this movie when I was 11 years old and I remember at the end of the movie when Evie says “He was Edmond Dantes” I took that very literally 😂
Man, these guys are really good at talking to each other. Since Laurence is also very good at editing clips together, this video ends up being very entertaining.

Yes!
I never read the source material so I didn't have that going in but this movie blew me away when I saw it in theaters. Mostly because I had no interest in seeing it. My brother had wanted to see it and I was just along for the ride. I did not expect it to be as good as it was and even today after seeing it so many times the scene in the prison where the note is being read still moves me to tears. I also really love Hugo Weaving's performance in this. Also, I think the editing and writing are really sharp. And yes, I watch this every year in November. lol
Maybe the source material is worth a read this November too? It's also pretty good, and fleshes out a few of the characters a lot better in my opinion (though it also has some more unnecessary side-stuff too)
the best thing the source material has over the movie is how much time we spend with the cop trying to figure out who V is, what his story is, and the intellectual/psychological journey he takes, with a lot more internal monologue for him.
I like to think that V ordered the masks from abroad and the order went through because he’s the only one who knows the rest of the world still exists haha
But in the movie they openly talk about stuff the rest of the world is doing?
I think it was just a coincidence
I always assumed he’d ordered them 10-15 years before the events in the film, since he’d been working on the plan for a long time. He said it took him 10 years to clear the tracks to Parliament.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192- Exactly 😂 lol It's not like he would have put in an order for literally MILLIONS of them all at once. He would have carefully ordered a few thousand or so (under the guise of pretending to be some costume company) every few weeks or whatever, for YEARS, til he had what he needed. Besides, we aren't supposed to put THAT much thought into where he got the masks from anyway. It's more about the message dammit: It's about the public finally coming together to say enough is enough of their corrupt & fascist gov't. A message I can definitely get behind. (Looks around at my country in real life, 2023)
@@batnacksgottem
3:02 I'm glad that didn't change out V's mask for different emotions either. Not only does it place more focus and emphasis on Weaving's vocal performance to display all necessary variations, but the 1990 miniseries version of The Phantom of the Opera already did that with Charles Dance. Lana & Lilly, we know you used Phantom as one of your many backdrops for the film, but best you not make it *too* obvious there, ladies. 😆😉
Plus keeping the mask unchanged throughout the film rather adds to the effect that V is hard to read, as the only face he ever puts forward to the world is the mask with a kind of Mona Lisa-style enigmatic smile that can be seen as either friendly or sinister. He's less of an antihero in the movie than in the comics, but it still works better imo.
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Oooh, great analysis! And it's only further enhanced by the fact that we can never see his eyes through the mask, and as they say, "Eyes are windows to the soul." Even when he takes his mask off and breaks the mirror Gerard Butler style, no doubt in realization of him becoming the very monster he's been combatting, we don't see his face. It isn't until Evey returns to his house before the 5th that we get any real semblance of the love still lingering within his soul.
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose And that's an even better analysis you've made, lol. Building on that, the moment where he first emerges as the monster of vengeance known as "V" is when he blows up Larkhill and we see him emerging from the fire naked, enraged and victorious all at once, and even in this scene we cannot see his eyes--only shadow and scarred flesh in the shape of a man, the faceless nightmare avenger that haunts Delia's dreams and soon the dreams of every British fascist in the story. As Evey says, what they did to him was monstrous, but in doing so they made a monster. Interesting that they then use rain, the opposite of fire, for his famous "redemption in the rain" scene with Evey later on.
@Latest Obssesion True. I can't remember, does V give the same monologue about "the two faces of Anarchy, destroyer and creator" in the film? Probably not, since they really downplayed the whole anarchism theme, but yeah definitely V is the destroyer, created in hate both by and to annihilate the oppressive government, and Evey is acknowleged as being the creator, who assumes the V mantle after his purpose is served and he is mutually destroyed with the fascists, but with the purpose of healing and building a better world (the last thing she does in the comics is save a sympathetic character from mob violence and take him in, the same way V did for her at the beginning). V started fires to destroy the irredeemably wicked, Evey embraced rain to let the past be forgiven and washed away.
The fact that Ben found a picture of a crowd wearing Guy Fox mask with one being hilariously drawn on. Bravo
😂😂
lol @ “Guy Fox”.
The director of Bullet Train being Hugo Weaving's stunt double in V for Vendetta is kind of wild.
Surely stuntman to director hardly ever happens.
Judging from "Bullet Train" he should've stayed a stunt man!
It happened twice! Leitch directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs and Shaw, and Bullet Train. Chad Stahelski, who was ALSO a stuntman who worked with the Wachowskis, has directed all of the John Wick movies (Leitch co-directed the first one). And thinking about it now, yeah, that's probably why they wanted Keanu to be the lead for those.

Post *The Matrix* this masked roll was a great fit for Hugo Weaving. At the time, it was still a bit weird for mainstream audiences to see him in non-villainous roles (after his iconic initial performance as Agent Smith). Yes, he was great as Elrond in the LOTR movies, of course, but at the time it was somewhat of an odd casting that unintentionally caused cognitive dissonance for casuals. Many viewers unfamiliar with the Tolkien books kept thinking his character had sinister hidden motivations. And jokes where Elrond did ridiculous things like calling Frodo "Mr. Anderson" were extremely commonplace (especially because both franchises were finishing in 2003). In *V For Vendetta* mainstream audiences of the time were free to interpret Hugo as a heroic character without preconceived biases because his (at the time) villainous face was obscured completely by the mask. Or to draw any conclusion they might about the character. The mask essentially gave Hugo's performance a fresh slate in the pop culture zeitgeist of the time - while ironically obscuring the dramatic instrument contemporary actors rely upon the most. What Mr. Weaving did in this film with both his body language and his voice was nothing short of inspired. I don't think it was lost on the filmmakers, who had largely all worked on *The Matrix* together, what an interesting decision it was to cast someone with an iconically villainous face as a _faceless_ hero.
TBF, he was ABSOLUTELY miscast for Elrond. These fey creatures of eternal youth and ethereal beauty, but also one of them looks like a middleaged Vulcan XD Great performance, obviously, and I am happy he got the role for the resulting films, but completely does not fit the concept of Elves in Tolkien's world
You know that episode of 'Malcolm in the Middle' where Hal is trying to get a perfect score while bowling and he keeps supersticiously going through the same routine on each throw, i.e. taking a sip of cup, unzipping his fly, saying gesundhiet as he throws the ball, and so on...that's what this show has turned into and I love it. Nice! Caught in the first hour ... When shooting a film that's referred to as the Golden Hour. But, of course, when viewing fresh, new content, we call it Blue Harvest.
0:23 Where i'm from, its called "eggs in the middle" or just "egg in the middle." i think this might be the one dish with the largest number of different names in the world. its such an extremely simple meal that every single culture that has eggs and bread (all of them) has a version of it. personally, i love it and always make it with the white solid and the yolk runny. SO GOOD. gotta cook it on the lowest possible heat though, maybe 200F
Out of interest, where in the World are you from? 52 years living in England, I’ve never once seen this.
I'd argue (though I have no proof whether it was intentional) that the UK/London looking so nice in the movie works. The idea is that there's this horribly oppressive government, but because the people get to live in relative comfort they don't speak up. V says so in the speech: that they gave up freedom in favour of security and comfort. The comic has more characters and show how those who are less better off struggle, but the movie keeps it to the middle class and challenges them to think outside their spacious homes and realize that it doesn't make up for everything else they've lost. Maybe if there'd been a working class character from the seedier underbelly (like in the comics) the deceit would be more obvious, but not having one makes their absence all the more palpable. It's easy to turn a blind eye to injustice if you're content with your situation.

I just saw it for the first time expecting the worst... but I loved it? Just like the Matrix sequels it feels gloriously heavy handed and silly, but never campy, while also dwelling in the quiet moments very well.

Speaking as someone who really likes this film, and as someone who at a later point read the graphic novel, I don't personally feel that the film is ruined for me. I rather just view them as separate but intertwined, with their own merits and detractions. That being said, it was VERY clear to me what Alan Moore responded so negatively to after having read the graphic novel!
The thing that is most often pointed to is the seeping in of Bush-era politics into the theme of the movie, but the thing I noticed much more clearly was the character of V being portrayed in a WAYYY more heroic light than his graphic counterpart. V in the movie can be argued as antihero, or hero with many negative moral qualities, but there is no comparing to V in the books, who Moore very clearly intended to NOT be a heroic character, or even a good person when it comes down to it.
Admittedly I haven't read the novel in some years, but out of what I remember I feel that Moore intended V to be simply a product of his lust for revenge, and the fucked up society allows for and enhances his justifications for his actions (kind of similar to Patrick Bateman interestingly), while at the same time falsely making him come off as heroic.
Honestly the effort to get to blue harvest this week was *chefs kiss*

I know jokes and running gags come and go on this series all the time, but please never lose the guy yelling Rodney compilation, cause that shit makes me howl every damn time
One of my favorite marketing misdirects involves a publicity photo for this movie. It's a picture of Natalie Portman getting her head shaved, but unlike the film, the photo shows the face of the guy doing the shaving. His name is even mentioned in the photo caption, and he's clearly not a significant character in the film. But of course, in the movie itself, we eventually learn that the person who shaved her head (and did a lot of other things to her) was actually V. Anyone who saw that photo before seeing the film would have every reason to believe that the government was holding Evey captive...which isn't true.
0:25 In America, or at least, in *my* household when my mom or dad would make them, I'd always known them as "Hollywood eggs." So imagine my surprise to see them featured in V under the ye olde British name lol. 😆😉
They’re not a British thing at all; purely an American invention.

honestly the ‘john hurt is big brother’ thing is probably my favorite thing in this movie
I adore this movie. One of my all-time favorites. I don't love every change, but I think it's a great companion to the comic.
As a Phantom of the Opera fan, I feel it is my civic duty to add in how revered this movie is to our fandom. The Phans are a large reason I even got to watching it in the first place, and as a then 15-year-old girl with a burgeoning Phantom obsession, imagine my gleeful surprise at just how much V had in common with it (outside the obvious). So much so, that I even wrote a list to keep track! And it seemed to come at an appropriate time too, since V was released just less than year after the Joel Schumacher ALW Phantom adaptation, which still remains a pretty hot topic of debate for our phandom, and interestingly enough, they were both distributed by Warner Brothers. Anyway, because of such strong connections, connections I've since learned were completely intentional by the filmmakers according to IMDB Trivia, one of the best relics of old RUclips you can find is the adorably animated Phantom & V series by ZShadow, which is pretty much an encapsulation of 2000's pop culture. I'm talking episodes set in Harry Potter, Spiderman, Twilight, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. And naturally, thanks in large part to the lead actors involved, we've got episodes for 300, LOTR, Matrix, & Transformers. I've been re-visiting them recently and to be perfectly honest, they still hold up. 😉🌹
Having recently fallen back in love with this movie (thanks to The Matrix Resurrections sharing too-close-but-significantly-better-written relations to Love Never Dies, the infamous fix-it Phantom sequel nobody asked for), I actually dressed as up V for Halloween this year, and even made a YT video of me performing his alliteration monologue on my channel. ☺
Edit: Okay, I just got to the theories surrounding V's identity and at 12:17 I heard "Evey thinks it might be her father." WAY TO ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE GUYS LOL XD. Alan Moore probably debunked that one saying "What story do you guys think I'm telling here? Phantom of the Opera? Leave that one to the Wachowskis mate!" 😆
Edit #2: I should also mention: There's a 1987 animated Phantom where Erik's wearing what is essentially a Guy Fawkes mask so...yeah. 😏
The real question is who's more morally ambiguous, V or Erik?
Either that or who win in a fight lol.
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Hmm, hard to say, as they're both complex characters that can fall into the anti-hero/anti-villain mold and yet so many of us love them anyway. 🥰
Lol, watch the Phantom/V series and they do actually fight on more than one occasion, with different winners depending on the universe they're in. My personal favorite episode is Phantom & V vs. The Matrix, where Erik defeats Neo with the power of his MOTN high note and then fights sentinels using his Punjab lasso. There's also the hilarious Phantom & V vs. Phangirls episode, where the most unrealistic thing about it to me is the creator thinking Phangirls don't know who V is. 😆
Absolutely fascinating.
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose I had no idea of the existence of the Phantom/V series before now. This is fantastic. Thanks for spreading this and sharing this with the world lmao. But yeah the theatrical, stylish tragic monster anti-establishment character will never not be fascinating, will it?

The Blue Harvest running gag has officially crossed the threshold where it has gone from being funny, to not being funny, to becoming funny again. In fact, I don't know whether it was the cleverness of its inclusion in this script, or the fact that the guys couldn't stop laughing this time, but it was more than funny to me. It was hilarious. I literally had to stifle nearly uncontrolled laughter and pause the video.

Time (I've lost count) informing James (who definitely already knows) that Blue Harvest was the working title for Return of the Jedi, not the original Star Wars.
No
I'm sure the feelings of genuine momentum come largely from the fact that adapting V had always been in the cards for the Wachowskis, with them wanting to do it even before they made The Matrix. So even with the multiple changes made, you can tell there's a real heart and respect for the source material.
Except for Sutler and his supercomputer waifu, they cut that whole side plot stuff right out lol
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Yep I do remember reading about that removal, not sure it would've fit alongside what they were going for with Sir John Hurt's portrayal (RIP) but still, certainly some wtf going on there. 😆
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose Yeah honestly most of the stories Alan Moore writes are overall fantastic, but almost always have some really weird subplots with odd psycho-sexual elements crammed in randomly. And sure enough, almost all of the adaptions of his stories cut that stuff out. 💀Maybe that's the real reason why he hates all adaptions of his work so much...
On the other hand, though, I definitely found the book Susan to be a much more compelling character than the film Sutler. Sutler is a rather two-dimensional Big Brother/British Hitler stand-in (his name is even edited to look and sound more like Hitler's), whereas Susan was a total freak, but was more interesting for it because his freakishness was fascinating as a character study and as a commentary on the nonsensical power structure of fascist dictatorships.
I think they should do a video on the Justice League episode 'For The Man Who Has Everything' which is based on the Alan Moore series of the same name. Unlike the rest of the adaptions of his work, Moore actually likes it and his name is in the credits.
This is actually my favorite superhero film. I don't know that I'd like it as much if I were ever to read the original story, but for what it is, I'd say it is essential viewing.
The actual story of Guy Fawkes isn't anything remotely close to the "freedom" jerking material that people claim...the guy was a terrorist in reality and not even remotely close to resembling anything like noble

18:00 I like that Alan Moore's complaints aren't "waah you changed my thing and this character doesn't look how I imagined" its just "you made some changes so it isn't really the same story why didn't you set it in a more appropriate place therefore..." like he's just annoyed he can write a better story in ten seconds of criticism of what they did than they could with years and all of his pre-existing work lol
I swear I only keep coming back every week for the Blue Harvest gag, the Rodney supercut, and the entirety of the content in each video
The Blue Harvest joke is the Mr Sunday Movies equivalent of the murder of the Waynes. Like, "Aww c'mon they just did this!"
The boy band FIVE lore is what I needed today, thank you.
Five for Fendetta
Call me crazy, but I love this movie. It's my favorite movie from the Wachowskis, period.
You're not crazy! It's mine too! Everybody adores the Matrix movies but this one was always my favorite & I feel that it's way more important. Especially when I take a look around at real life events in the Western World. 😒 Its pretty scary what the public will tolerate in order to *FEEL* "safe & prosperous. It's nuts.
Same!
Same as Agent Smith: "Anyone Could Have Been You, Whereas I've Always Been Anyone"
Is this the best Blue Harvest segue yet?
Fun Fact: Did you know that the letter V throughout history, was often associated with the color blue. Which is funny because the working title for Star Wars was Blue Harvest!
I will always love the Blue Harvest tie ins 😂😂 you guys are hilarious!! Thank you for all the entertainment ❤️
Gotta press Like for work James does every week with that indigo collection!
Bloody love this movie. Also quite prophetic when you see the direction the UK Is going.
Same for America 😩 The whole Western World is being completely taken over by fascism at this point. I am unnerved by how much of the public is tolerating all of the new laws on the books that basically criminalize being a Trans person, for example. Over 400 pieces of legislation about it have been passed throughout my country. I'm not Trans myself... but I don't think I need to be, to still find it incredibly disturbing! How much oppression of certain groups of people is the public willing to tolerate, just so long as THEY get to *feel* as though they are "safe & prosperous"??
Pretty scary sh*t.
What’s the main thing I’ve learned from watching this video? That the penetration of UK-based boy/girl bands into the late-90s Australian pop market was WAY more extensive than I had previously believed.
Hey James and Mason, just letting you know I've liked the video. Thanks
Blue Harvest was actually the working title for Return of the Jedi, not the original Star Wars. In that clip you use, you even see "R. Marquand" on the film slate, as the director. Richard Marquand, being the director of Return of the Jedi.
I'm not sure if that's supposed to be part of the joke, but I don't think they've ever mentioned it.
It wasn’t even the working title, but a cover name for the on location sets, to try and throw off the fans.
@@happyspaceinvader508 According to Wikipedia: "Working titles are used mainly because an official title has not yet been decided upon or to intentionally disguise the real nature of a project." So, "working title" still works in this context.
Also, I thought I was the only one who remembered “Five”! Such a good band! “Baby When the Lights Go Out” and “Slam Dunk the Funk” are still bops too lol
BLUE HARVEST JOKE WAS THE BEST ONE SO FAR OMG
I'll never get tired of the Blue Harvest joke... although I do kinda feel bad James and Mason are now forced to cram it into every single episode until they retire
I'm so so so incredibly glad the the Blue Harvest bit is back. Please never take it away again.
Alan Moore hates this movie? I don’t believe it.
I wish we could get some more jokes about Classical literature . That one episode with all the Dostoyevsky references was the best .
I dont know how its possible but the blue harvest joke is getting funnier to me
Please put the Rodney supercut in every caravan of garbage going forward. It’s worth the like just for that
J for Jendetta had me weak 😂
I enjoyed that extended 5ive reference far too much. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I legitimately hope the Rodney bit never goes away. Makes me laugh every time.
10:20 when you say, "he's so good at fighting that empty knights armor"
the auto-generated subtitles read, "he's so good at fighting that empty knight-sama"
And somehow while being completely wrong, the subtitle is also completely right.
I love it.
I don't even have subtitles on and still heard knight-sama haha
0:15 Nope… that’s purely an American thing, not British. You’re getting confused with “Toad in the Hole” which is sausages in Yorkshire Pudding batter.
pretty sure v for vendetta was Moore's baby. unlike all other adaptations of his work, possibly having some chance of working for Moore, he was probably always going to hate V for Vendetta.
Absolutely one of the best movies ever made.
He did it again! Taking off last week lulled me into a false sense of security
19:55 I do think Alan Moore is exempt from that though, because he isn't any old contracted comic creator. He's literally Alan fucking Moore. I think that's why his illustrator said that he can't sympathise with Moore here because they themselves took that initiative to sell the rights, as opposed to most comic creators who never have the rights to their own work in the first place.
13:24 That would be absolutely insane, kinda like that theory
